This review is kind of difficult because I'm a bit split on my opinion. I'm going with four stars because the good in my opinion outweighs any negative. The first thing you'll notice when you pull up in the parking lot is that the building looks pretty dated and it is. There's a sign when you walk in that says welcome, established in the 1950s. That's impressive, but it also shows in a lot of the areas that have not been maintained well. The staff was all very friendly. My server was great and it only took about 5 to 10 minutes to get my food. I went on Saturday around 3 PM and it was not very busy. The menu was easy to flip through and not overbearing with too many options. I chose fried fish and fried shrimp and then I also got french fries and the stewed tomatoes on the side. The fish was very delicious and the shrimp were as well. The fries are your standard crinkle and the stewed tomatoes were delicious. There's lots of variety of seafood and options to meet anybody's pickiness. Overall, I thought it was a good experience, but they definitely need to do some work making it look nicer and newer Positive: Food and Service Negative: Ambiance, decor, dated building and furnishings

I just want to let anyone who has the chance to come to this locally family owned restaurant to NOT PASS IT UP! Amazing food! Love the Scrod! the chowder is also amazing! comes out piping hot and full of flavor! I always have such a hard time picking an appetizer because they are ALL SO GOOD! Last time here I got the captain and it was so fresh and I had to pack up the rest! Amazing food! Great Prices and the owner is the sweetest! The staff makes you feel like they know u personally! I will be back next week

Oyster stew: yum! Lots of fresh oysters.

Hungry Pelican is one of the first places hubby and I dined when restaurants were permitted to open at 33% capacity. If you are afraid of a small dining room from the looks of the outside, you need not worry. The inside is way bigger than it appears. There is plenty of space for social distancing. There are a least 2 divided dining rooms and a separate room for bar. The restaurant space is both spacious and cozy. Our server wore a mask. She was friendly, efficient and respected our apace. The seafood was all fresh as can be. They are seasoned in the classic "New England style"- meaning there is some salt, lots of butter and *maybe* pepper. If you like more seasoning in your food, be sure to ask for each and every condiment. None are on the table thanks to Covid. I loved my clam chowder, oyster stew, and fried scallops. I also tried the crab stuffed fish on another visit. I did not enjoy this dish as much as the other fried goodness. They used "krab" instead of crab. The fish was also a bit overcooked for my liking. Hubby loved his fried white fish. One note: you should only order two pieces if you're ravenous. They are large pieces. We are new fans of this Hungry Pelican! We look forward to returning again!

I worked at the Goose Creek Rd. location some 35 or so years ago, now that location has since closed and what is left is this one on Bardstown Rd. When we went inside, one couldn't help but to go back in time....when things flowed more smoothly. I can imagine the place hasn't been updated in quit some time. But its the food I am after. You know, good "Seafood" places are hard to come by. Hungry Pelican seemed to deliver some pretty good seafood. It was around my birthday when my wife suggested fish since she knows I really love it. She also suggested Hungry Pelican since I mentioned it one Sunday afternoon while sitting on the patio. I ordered the clams, she got the Fish Sandwich. We also tried the Fried Pickles which were pretty good! The fish was cooked just right! The clams were fresh and tasted great! The service was fantastic! My wife mentioned it was my birthday to the server, then the server offered us a free desert! I opted for the turtle cheesecake which was very good! They have a "Children's" menu and a "Senior's" Menu also, which unfortunately I now qualify for...lol

    Welcome!

We were greeted and seated within mere minutes of entering the restaurant. I was really surprised by the size of the place. From the outside, the restaurant does not look nearly as large as it actually is. Our server was very friendly and patient with us as we surveyed the entire, long menu. We ordered hush puppies as an appetizer and my husband got the clam chowder. For our entrees, he got the seafood platter and I got the stuffed flounder with two sides (stewed tomatoes and mashed potatoes). Our food was VERY filling. As a matter of fact, we were full from eating the appetizers. We tasted the entrees only so that we could give the server some positive feedback. Overall, this was a good experience at a place that serves seafood with a down-home, filling flair.

We shared japchae, tteokkbeokki, and one of the beef soups on the menu. Plenty of food for the two of us to share! We also didn't wait too long for the food. It's run by a husband and wife team. The wife was mostly running the front of house. It didn't get too busy and she checked on us a few times. They do offer some unique items I haven't seen at other Korean places in town. It's definitely a selling point to coming here. I did feel like the food was a bit bland. But I know we love our salt in America so maybe that's how it should taste. I thought the tteokkbeokki was exceptional. It really tasted homemade. It was nice and soft! Glad I came by to visit!

We were greeted warmly by the owner. I was excited to try the Sundae Gukbap: sausage soup. I'm not aware of any other Louisville Korean place that has it on the menu. Hubby ordered the Sweet and Sour Pork. I also got the grilled rice cakes as an appetizer. Everything came out pretty quickly. The rice cake sticks are fried to crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They're so good w the sweet spicy sauce drizzled on top. My soup was a bit of a challenge to me due to the abundant mix of pork "stuff": liver, blood sausage...etc. we both liked the delicious SS Pork. But I do wish this one had more stuff in it other than battered pork strips. When I return, I will try something more vanilla than the Sundae Gukbap: but more exciting than the SS pork.

We were sat and immediately told everything would be 15% off today, and if we spent $50 we would get to draw from a price bucket and $100 would allow us to spin a wheel. The restaurant was clean and despite being packed it wasn't loud. I really appreciate the individual lights at each table, these almost 30 year old eyes need to be able to read the menu. Speaking of menu, this menu is extensive. It took us a while to choose but we settled on chicken hibachi, pork belly Ramen, OMG roll and another sushi roll my partner ordered. As we waited for our food, we noticed how cheerful everyone working at this restaurant was. Laughter and smiles filled the air and I couldn't help but join in. I told my partner I've never had such friendly servers. They worked together re filling our waters and bringing out our food. The sushi was delicious, I'm new to sushi so I don't have much to compare it too, but, my partner said it was the best he had ever had. The ramen broth was packed with flavor but, I wasn't fan of the pork belly (too tough for me). The chicken hibachi was good, maybe not the best I've ever had but 4/5 stars. At the end of our meal, we were able to draw from a price bucket, I won a free appetizer for next time. She gave me a pen to take home and said if you sign up for emails you get 20% off your next meal (sounds pretty good to me) I really enjoyed this dinner experience, the staff were so positive and friendly and the food was pretty tasty. It was really nice receiving 15% off our check. I do reccomend this restaurant for anybody who love sushi!

We started off with a few appetizers to share between four of us, and they were actually really interesting. I tried this crab cake that had what tasted like another type of crab cake inside of it -- I've never had anything like that before, but it was really good and definitely unique. The honey barbecue wings though? Those were TO DIE FOR. Easily one of my favorite things we ordered. The hushpuppies, on the other hand, were small and pretty mid -- definitely something I could've done without. For the main, we went with the seafood deal, which came out to about $163, and honestly it was still a solid value for how much food you get. It included about a pound each of two different types of crab, two pounds of shrimp, a pound of sausage, corn, potatoes, and two lobsters. And let me tell you -- those lobsters were so juicy and meaty. I've never had lobster like that before. Easily one of the highlights of the whole meal. Just a heads up -- it does not come with eggs, which we didn't realize until we were already eating, so definitely add that if you want it. We got the Cajun seasoning with a hot level, and it was SO good. I learned their house Cajun is basically a mix of all their seasonings, which makes sense because the flavor was hitting. Everything came out super hot and fresh, and we even had leftovers. They say it feeds 4-6 people, but realistically, I'd say it's perfect for about 4 people if you're actually hungry. Drinks were also a highlight. They have $5 lemon drops specifically on Thursdays, which is a great deal. The mango lemon drop was AMAZING -- hands down the best flavor. The passionfruit and strawberry didn't hit the same for me, and just a heads up, some flavors cost an extra dollar, which we weren't told upfront. But I will say -- after a mango and a passionfruit one, it definitely hit. Service overall was good, and you honestly couldn't tell our server was new, but we did have one issue -- we asked multiple times for eggs and they were forgotten. Between the missing add-on, the inconsistency with some of the lemon drop flavors, and that small service slip, it was enough for me to knock off a star. That said, the food, portions, and overall experience were still really strong.
