A forgettable experience and ok food. Finally gave it a visit at the spear of the moment. The long drive is a bumpy as the uneven food experience. Got the cod dinner with sides. The fish was large and flakey but lacking in flavor. The worst coleslaw I had ever tasted. At least the chips were fresh. It a dive bar with dollar bills attached on the walls. Dark large place with large tables to host large gatherings easily. This will be my only visits. Watch out for the several potholes along your drive to it. read more

First time at this place. As others have said, INVEST in fixing all the potholes! Actually invest in your business period. It's ran down and filthy ! I would start with a good cleaning. Just dirty and gross! BUT they were busy. Mostly a "guy" crowd. So they're bringing in the business, to be able to upgrade. I ordered the "Bean Soup" because to be honest, after seeing the dirty environment I didn't want much from this place. I was with a friend and they wanted to eat here. And how bad can you mess up soup? It's boiling so hopefully any bacteria will be killed. This was ABSOLUTELY the most Disgusting soup I have EVER had. (Which was only a few bites) basically this was bagged beans (still firm) in water. With a very small amount of celery and onion. NO flavor AT ALL! Like NONE! A three year old could make a more flavorful soup. With some thickness I'm sure. They should be ashamed to have this on the menu and to be charging $6 for it! YUCK! My wife ordered the Cod Fish sandwich. It was a huge piece of fish served on a slice of bread and chips. I got the Fish Platter, a huge piece of fish, lightly breaded Oysters and Shrimp with Coleslaw and Fries . Everything was served hot, fresh and delicious. Service was great, but the fish seems to have deteriorated, changed, not the same, what gives? The breading seemed different, good but less good than before. The fish seemed different too. Fresh seafood from cod to frog legs at a price that makes your wallet happy. It's hard to not do the seafood platter which includes a huge filet of fish, large oysters, nice size shrimp with fries and slaw for under 28 dollars it's enough for two. When I walked into PassTime Fish House my first thought was "I wish I had a flashlight". It took a while for my eyes to adjust to the rather dark interior lit by beer neon signs. But I had no trouble focusing on the menu once I acclimated to the rustic decor. There's a significant beer on tap menu. And for a business with "Fish" in its name, there's plenty of options for landlubbers, including BLT, Grilled Cheese, burgers and the J-Town Ribeye, also known as fried bologna. My entire group went with the fish platter. Fried fish, fries & slaw with your choice of bread in case you want to make a sandwich. I'm talking about a huge slab of fried cod. It literally hung over the plate. The fish was perfect. Moist, flaky, with a crisp coating that wasn't greasy or too heavy. Delicious. And served piping hot. Even the fries were hot and crisp. If you're looking for gourmet-this isn't your spot. But for great fried fish you'd have a tough time finding somewhere better. My only "ding" is one poor server covered the entire dining area. She busted her butt, still, she couldn't be everywhere at the same time. So, getting a tea refill was a bit of a challenge. On the other hand, she was happy to bring additional beers to the table on a timely basis. A minor complaint. My biggest challenge was waddling out after a huge lunch. read more

Hidden gem! If it wasn't for a friend's recommendation, we would have never known about this place. They don't advertise, it's strictly by word of mouth. It's a little hard to find, but wow, what a hidden gem! It's hard to find really good fried seafood around the area, but this place makes you feel like you're eating seafood on the coast. We are done with this place. Over 60% of the time they are out of onion straws. They make almost $10.00 for that side order- you would think they would have it in stock. When asked why- they said "everybody orders it and we run out"! How about ordering double and triple! They don't answer the phone, so you can't call to find out if they have them. Last night the paper towel holder was filthy, th bathroom sink was filthy, the sink was constantly running, toilet paper was all over the floor. The parking lot has been full of potholes for years. The first time I went the food was amazing best fish ever, the second time they gave me catfish nuggets instead of the catfish filet that I ordered and they tied the bag tight thinking I was not going to check my order and before I could get the bag open the waiter said oh I forgot your oysters. Then when I paid for my food with cash ( because that's Al they accepted she stole 10 dollars. I said ma'am I gave you $80 dollars the meal was $68 and she gave me one dollar and some change back. My boyfriend's family has been telling me about this place ever since we got together, and last night we finally went so I could try it. You order up at the bar, then seat yourself, they bring the food to you and you pay at the end back up at the bar. We all got fish filets, as well as queso and chips, and the loaded fries. The only downside to this place was the wait - we got our chips and queso right away and then waited almost an hour for the fish, and then another few minutes for the fries. The queso and chips were good, the chips were very unique. The loaded fries were okay, they were pretty dry and the sauce served with it was like a ranch, blue cheese, sour cream combination that we weren't fans of. The fish itself was some of the best fried fish I've ever had! It's a smaller place but the service was very kind although there was only one person helping all the tables as well as everyone at the bar. I would recommend going here at least once but if you do then make sure you don't have anywhere you need to be shortly after! read more

We arrived at 5:30, place was empty with exception to a small group inside. We had a party of 6. Sat outside had a few buckets of beer. Kept waiting and waiting for food. They finally brought some out but just for one couple! The rest of us just had to watch them eat bc no one wants to eat cold fish. We told them to go ahead. Over an hour later they started to bring out the food for the table behind us. We were pissed. They finally came out with our food. It was hot and tasted good at the time. I was craving some fried fish but wanted a spot/fish I haven't had before and decided to go to this place. I had heard about it for years and knew exactly where it was, as I've driven by their sign numerous times. It's definitely tucked back in a weird location, so much so that my boyfriend was questioning where I was taking him once we turned at the sign. However, hole in the wall joints are always a joy to visit. This was a Sunday night, Selection Sunday to be exact, so the restaurant wasn't too busy. I knew they would have tvs because we wanted to watch the Selection Show and they had plenty of tvs around... only one of which was on the Show so we sat near that one. Could be a decent spot to watch a ball game though. Ordering was done at the bar and it was cash only. We didn't have cash but they had an ATM available. We ordered and sat wherever we liked... didn't even pay at that moment, which I thought was odd. No service at the tables this night, perhaps they do on busier nights, I'm not sure. Tucked away in an industrial part of J-Town, PassTime is nothing much to look at. The definition of a dive bar with dim lighting, loyal regulars, and dollar bills lining the walls - what PassTime lacks in atmosphere it makes up for with friendly service and absolutely delicious fish and oysters. My parents, husband, and I came for an early dinner/late lunch on a Sunday. Service was quick, casual, and friendly. I ordered oysters and the rest of the table ordered the fish platters. It took a while for our food to come out but I can only assume that it's because it's freshly prepared because when it did come out, it was piping hot and so tasty. The portions are huge for the price and the oysters were perfectly battered and seasoned. They have plenty of parking in their lot, as well as indoor seating and a patio. Want to play pool? There's a table! Cash only but there's an ATM inside. Order at the bar and grab a seat. The fish plate was an easy pick for me. It included choice of bread, fries and slaw. They also supply a healthy amount of tarter sauce but if you need more it's only a small charge. I really enjoyed my fish. It was huge!! It wasn't greasy or over-breaded. Fries and slaw were average but an ample portion. My draft beer was the perfect combination. PassTime is a long-standing restaurant and bar. The space is cozy, dark and full of walls with customer dollars and pictures of Derby horses. I hadn't been here in over 10 years but found myself in the area at lunch so my wife and I stopped by. The same rundown place, but that's part of its charm I guess. The bar and patio were about 1/2 full when we got there at 12:45. We ordered a fish sandwich and three sides - fries, slaw, and potato salad and were told to pay when we are finished. After waiting for 30 minutes my wife went in to check on the order. The bartender asked for the name on the order and responded with "I'm sure she has it back there. We only have 3 fryers, maybe 15 more minutes." After waiting another 6-7 minutes I went in and asked the bartender just to cancel the order. He asked why and I said because it's been 40 minutes. Instead of any sort of apology he argued with me in front of customers to tell me it had actually only been 35 minutes because he wrote the time of our order down. Like 35 minutes waiting for a fried piece of fish and scooped precooked sides would be somehow acceptable. I remember the fish sandwich being good years ago, but it is probably not worth the wait for a quick lunch, and certainly isn't worth this low level of customer service. I'm sure it's fine with the 60-70 year old regulars at the bar, but good luck to this place when they start dying off. We should have just gone to The Fishery in St. Matthew's. read more

A friend told me this place has the best fish in town and I agree! I called to place a pick up order and let the server know that I was not looking at a menu. She was so extremely helpful in helping me decide what I wanted and what would be the best way to order. She expressed the wait was 35 minutes. I got there only to realize they don't accept cards but there is an ATM inside. Got my food and came home, immediately opened the box and the first bite was immaculate. Still hot, perfectly fried fish and the tartar sauce was the best I've ever had in my life! I don't usually like tartar sauce, so that says something. PassTime is a place you can easily miss, but do yourself a favor and don't. There's a sign on the road that says PassTime Fish house. Follow it. Just do it. Down this little industrial-area service drive you'll see a place that looks like what a patchwork quilt would like if it were a building. A deck. A fence. An addition that was added two owners ago. All stitched together to make this unique placed called Passtime. To be honest, when we first pulled up we kind of looked at each other and wondered what we'd be up to/in for. Once we got inside we were, like, "Oh, yeah!" and settled in for lunch. This place has such a unique personality. You can tell it started a long time ago (I'm guessing as a neighborhood bar) and kept growing and adding on. Someone recommended I have Almost Famous Hand Cut & Breaded Cod Fish Sandwich (kinda rolls right off the tongue, eh?). Well, who am I to question the advice of someone who has been there before, so that's what I ordered. What I didn't know that the fish was more than just the highlight of the sandwich. It basically WAS the sandwich...oh...and a couple slices of bread. And It Was Awesome. The fish was highly seasoned (the way I like things seasoned) and the food was delivered amazing fast. This sandwich, alone, was worth the trip. Our server was spot-on and glad to help and answer questions. It was an amazingly laid back experience that doesn't normally come with lunch, since people are always in a hurry. They don't accept credit cards, so it's cash only. Fortunately there's an ATM on site for those who tend to pay with plastic. From the cardboard covered windows to the visible construction scars, from the vintage crane machine to the octopus of power cables dangling under one of the televisions, this place has LOADS of character. That's not a complaint, either, because all of those elements contribute to the unique personality of this place. The food is great. The service is friendly and helpful.
