We had a great lunch at Franny's Seafood in Louisville's Schnitzelburg neighborhood. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, with excellent service throughout. We started with three varieties of oysters and a glass of Albariño. The oysters were very fresh, and the red onion and pickle granita added a bright, briny contrast that elevated each bite. For mains, my mom had the fish and chips with a light, crisp batter and house-made tartar sauce with dill and pickles, along with a pomegranate cosmopolitan. I had the Blue Crab Smash crab cake sandwich with onion rings; the crab was rich and meaty, and the dipping sauce stood out. A friend recommended Franny's to me and I am a huge seafood lover, so I had to check it out. Boy, was I impressed! We got great service from our waitress Raven, who was a delight from the beginning to the end of the meal. We also had a great interaction with the manager who I think her name was Essie and she was also a delight. I had the fish and chips and it was amazing. The star of the dish though is the tartar sauce, which has a hint of dill and lemon in it. The hush puppies made with cream cheese were also a very tasty surprise. The dessert was a profiterole with chocolate and hazelnuts that was an absolute smash with my date and I. Go to Frannys for the service and the amazing food will just be a nice bonus. read more

But there was something more. Their names are Etsy (manager) and Raven (server). Etsy hearing me talking about getting seafood up in Boston and Maine, so she came over and introduced herself to me. She even brought me a sample of something I was considering. Raven, well she's a ray of sunshine that stood out against the cloudy atmosphere of the evening. If you're looking for killer seafood Franny's has you covered. We stopped in on Friday night and it was a full house, they made space for my girlfriend and I at the bar and even though they were slammed we felt at home. When it's busy being acknowledged right away diminishes everything, so props on the entire staff at Franny's Started with a custom cocktail and Brian who took care of us jumped right at it. Another thing that I was really impressed with is Brain was completely transparent about not knowing how to make what I asked of him. That shows tons of strength and skill. (If anyone from Franny's is reading this review, please keep that man as long as you can. He's a gem) After our first round of drinks the bread and oysters we had ordered arrived. The bread from a local bakery (Blue Dog) was hot and fresh and never stood a chance as we made haste of it quickly. The oysters had a fun little spin with fried saltines and a red onion slush and a dill slush along side a cocktail sauce. We enjoyed this little twist and talked about enjoying them on a hot day would be great too. After we finished the oysters and bread, round two of drinks was upon us. I ordered a custom martini that we were able to dial in by round three of drinks. With the third round of drinks came the jumbo shrimp cocktail and chicken piccata. The Piccata was wonderfully balanced, vibrant and briny. The chicken and pasta were cooked to perfection. The shrimp cocktail was the star for me and I would say there is only one spot here in town that might rival it. We finished with espresso's and key lime crème brûlée and it was one of those dessert that you are puzzled how it was gonna work and it was simply delicious! Props to Brian once again for asking all the right questions and taking feedback. The collaboration we had back and forth was truly a memorable experience and solidified our return. So happy Franny's in our neighborhood. The happy hour is so great. 3-6 M-F. My sister got the $7 mozzarella sticks and loved them. Right amount of breading and crispness. My go-to is the raw oysters ($2.50). The iced granita toppings are special. My husband loves the fish & chips and the shrimp roll. Upgrade for perfect onion rings. What's not to love about a $5 cosmo or martini. I want to make this a weekly occurrence for myself. Glad the prices make that possible. Oh, the complimentary birthday dessert is top notch, too. So we waited like a month since it open to let it work out their kinks and I will say everything was fantastic when we checked it out. It's amazing to have a nice seafood restaurant in the Germantown neighborhood and I can see patrons coming in from all over to check it out. Service was prompt and timely in terms of spacing out drinks, apps and entree. I am sure the pictures speak for themselves. I have visited them twice an both times wonderful. Once was for happy hour when it was less hectic and the second time it was at the peak dinner traffic. It could get really loud in the restaurant when it's busy but I would take loud over lingering seafood smell. That's the nice thing about the place .. don't smell like raw seafood. We stopped by here and enjoyed a shrimp cocktail appetizer. It was one of the best that I have had and was so pleased in that it was prepared perfectly, nicely chilled, firm, and sweet flavor. We stopped by Franny's for happy hour during the holidays! It's an incredibly welcoming atmosphere, with tall ceiling and brightly lit interior. We arrived around 4:15 pm during the weekday, we were immediately greeted and asked if we had reservations, which we did not. Fortunately, we were seated at a nearby two seater. Service was fast and friendly! Server went over happy hour menu and made a few suggestions. They have a great happy hour - $5 martinis and cosmos with a few appetizers including mozzarella sticks and oysters. Drinks and food came out fast - bar was packed and parties continued arriving while we dined there. Mozzarella sticks were fresh and homemade, three came in an order for $7. I'm having a tough time judging this place. The quality of the fish seemed very good and the service was wonderful. However... Fish and chips: the fish was so lightly breaded that it wasn't really crispy at all and when they played it half of it got soggy. The fries it was served with were bad. No seasoning, and not crispy. this was my first time here. we thought it was excellent. first, we got the cheesesticks and they were huge. then, we got the crab ragoon hush puppies. they were excellent. we all ordered the fish and chips. the fish is hake which is a mild flavored white fish which resembles cod. the fries and onion rings were both good. my son got the linguine with lemon butter and capers. we all tasted it and thought it was fantastic. for dessert we got the Nutella ice cream pastry dish which was superb. our waiter, John, did a great job. we met the owner and was a pleasure to talk to. they give a military discount. the side salad was good. read more

What a lovely addition to Louisville! Came here with a friend on a Friday evening to enjoy dinner and their happy hour. I ordered the cosmo to drink and it was so delicious!! We got the oysters and mozzarella sticks from the happy hour menu and loved them both. I got the shrimp basket, a bit on the expensive side but it was really good! And you get a nice decent portion. My friend got the fish and chips and she stated they were yummy. The staff was warm and explained everything to us. Very knowledgeable about the menu. The ambiance was very busy but it is lent. We visited during lunch and there were plenty of seats available, but we had a reservation. We were immediately seated and water glasses filled. The main dining room area is bright with high ceiling that had controlled acoustics. We were able to quietly converse between the two of us. We skipped appetizers, but I will try the hush puppies next time. I ordered the fish and chips and hubby got the fried shrimp roll. Both came with fries. My cod was a nice size and so light, flaky with a batter that was light and well seasoned. The tarter had a mild dill balance and was perfect without overwhelming the mild fish. My fries were seasoned, a little softer than crispy but good. Hubby's roll was piled high with shrimp, the remoulade was balanced against the pickled onions. His fries were slightly crispier. Went to Franny's last night and it did not disappoint!! Brand new and already hitting it out of the park. We had fish and chips, blue dog bakery bread and pickled pickles And veggies and some great cocktails. WE sat at the bar and the service was impressive. Sam the bartender made me a custom request. I order the pomegranate cosmopolitan with a twist. HE added snow ball ice. IT was one of the best drinks I've had in a long time. THe place was packed and the owner Megan even stopped behind the bar and chatted even though they were super busy. She is just such a delightful person and absolutely knows what she is doing. ITs like fine dining but with a casual twist. Will definitely go back as the food was prepared so well. FRench fries were crispy and the fish batter spot on. Yikes. Well, there was an attempt. Let's start with the glows: Love the outdoor seating. The cloth napkins are nice. Place looks new. The use of peanut oil for frying is always appreciated and the oil was definitely clean! Now let's talk about the things that need to be improved. The onion rings, though they may have been made in house definitely tasted as though they came off the back of the Sysco truck. No shame on Sysco products they have high-end things. However, at that price point, I would expect something a little bit more. The onion rings also had a little bit of fry detritus from whatever else had been in the fryer previously. I think it added flavor and I was very happy with it. However, again, I wouldn't call them stellar. We ordered the shrimp and the fried fish. The fried fish was as expected. It was a little bit damp where it seemed as though maybe it had too much moisture in it but again, I feel like it came from a bag so I don't think I could hold that against them. The fries themselves were abysmal. The flavoring was good, and I appreciate that part of it, but the fries themselves were rubbery. Either they had been sitting out too long or they had been just poorly cooked. They weren't greasy, but they weren't crisp. They were served underneath the main dish and I don't think that helped. The shrimp was supposed to be some kind of Key West thing, but it really looked like popcorn shrimp that had a light breading and then thrown into the fryer. Not great. I mean it was passible. But legit I think you could probably get that at any fast food place and it would be just as good if not better. My dear sweet wife said Moby Dick would've been lots better. And I agree. And I'm not totally fond of their stuff, but this place wasn't very good at all. For a mid $20 plate you got a good size piece of fish some subpar fries and that's it. It's not worth it. I mean, I know it's not fish fry season so my options are limited, but seriously there are plenty of other places that do this a lot better. Molly Malone's comes to mind. So I wasn't gonna write a review. I don't feel that I need to add my negativity out into the world, but this is to save you. I am doing this for you. Those hush puppies were a curse. I'm not sure who decided that this was the one thing that they needed to put some effort into, but they need to stop. Why not just run like everything else on the menu and pull it out of a bag and drop it into the fryer? It would've been better. I'm happy that somebody is expressing themselves, but maybe watercolors? So when they asked how it was and I need to let you know that it was a long time for them to get to my table. OK they were in a rush. I can give them a little bit of grace on that but when they finally came to ask how it was. I told him the hush puppies were raw on the inside because, they were raw on the inside. They brought me out another order. These were burnt on the outside. So I told them that maybe they need to cut them in half and then drop that half a ball of batter into the fryer so that way they could get a balance of having the outside brown and crisp and the inside light and fluffy. It was at this point they told me there's cream cheese in the batter. This is not an excuse. This is somebody trying to be fancy. You're not fancy. You have a paper placemat on the table underneath this damp fish. No. Stop. Feel free to be creative with your hush puppies. But a hush puppy is traditionally a cornmeal batter. There was less cornmeal in that and more sadness. I should probably mention the service. It's Friday night, I'm a teacher, it's been a long year and the year is almost over. I was planning on having three beers. I had one. It was a nine dollar 10 ounce pour. I was not going to get up from that chair and I would've gladly have paid another $18 for two more beers but nobody ever asked if I wanted one. So I didn't have it. I just groused about the hush puppies. I'm not saying the additional beer would've made the hush puppies better, but I definitely would've forgotten to write this review. I will say again, that sitting outside was lovely and so was watching the people at Houck's get plenty of beer. read more

They take reservations, which is always a bonus on my radar! This is up a notch on the scale of seafood restaurants, but not over the top for pricing. Get the clams casino! I haven't had those in years and what a treat. For me being a New Englander, getting fresh oysters in a land locked location has its challenges. Their oysters were on point and yummy. Fried mozzarella is a must as well to start. Fish and chips are always a test meal at a new seafood place. Large piece of fish, flaky and perfectly battered. Their fries also great, crispy on the outside with a bit of tender in the middle. Also got a bowl succotash and plate of sautéed spinach to share. Had to also try the New England seafood chowder. Loved the seafood chowder...it was lighter than New England clam chowder and loaded with all kinds of seafood. We had one person in out group dissent from our fish and chips and they ordered the pan fried flounder topped lump crab! Everything came out amazing and we were all quite full but we had to try the profiteroles.
