12 years and I'm due for an update. This has been one of our go-to places in nice weather over the years. It was the perfect spot for a Friday after work in the summer, as breezes over the water would help to quell the sweltering heat. Our most recent visit was on Oaks Day, and we headed in early to beat the crowd. We were able to be seated outside immediately and our friendly server promptly brought us drinks and water. We started with the classic Green Chili Wontons. My only complaint with this is that it's only 5 to an order - I wish it were more! I got the CQ Pizza with a cauliflower crust this time. Large enough to split 3 ways, it hit the spot and still had plenty left in my take-home box. CQ is a classic for a reason, and worth visiting on a nice day! read more

Recently dined at Captains Quarters with a group. Lots of parking in front of the building. I wasn't greeted when I entered which is fine since my party had already arrived but I ended up walking all around to try to find them. It's a huge restaurant with indoor, bar, patio and outside seating. Service was great, and very attentive. I ordered the chili lime shrimp tacos and onion rings - food arrived quickly but was a bit bland. Shrimp was tasty but served in a regular store bought soft taco - I ended up not eating the taco since it wasn't heated up and had no flavor. This place is huge. There are so many rooms and facets it's hard to review the whole place. We were there on Saturday evening. We sat in the first Bar area. The wait staff was attentive the parking lot is huge the rest room was clean. Now to the food. We got fish tacos and tuna tacos. The portions were very small. I was disappointed to see the crab cakes had been removed from the menu and overall there wasn't much seafood on the menu at all for being a place by the river with an overall vibe that seemed like they would have seafood. My husband and I brought our out of town guests to captains quarters hoping for a good experience. We were first met with extreme disappointment when we realized that captains quarters removed their shrimp and grits from the menu. We literally go to captains quarters for the shrimp and grits. Huge disappointment. The room was also extremely hot, and many of our party sat in the direct sun and sweated the whole dinner with squinty eyes. CQ hit it out of the park today. Clearly short of staff, they still managed timely service. We had 6 for lunch and they still served up hot food and brought it to the table in a single service. (Something I've learned to appreciate). The kids liked their pizza and chicken fingers. The grownups ran the gamut. Two fresh salads (spinach and Greek) topped with chili lime grilled shrimp. A Harrods burger grilled to medium as requested, and a cod sandwich on rye. All perfectly prepared. The fries were a thicker cut, but crispy on the outside while soft inside. They were so good, my grandson wouldn't share. (Santa's gonna remember that). Chips & queso were just average, but the peel it yourself shrimp were crisp and perfectly seasoned. I've been here a few times with friends and I've always had great service! The servers are always helpful and patient, especially with large parties. Today I had a fish sandwich. It was a good piece of fish and I like their breading. It was very dry though. No tartar sauce, no coleslaw came with it, which it was supposed to have. I went with a group of friends to catch a local band we love and try something new during this visit to Captains Quarters. I always enjoyed them supporting local artists and bands while keeping the evening filled with music and good food. I try something different every time I visit and I kept hearing about the amazing CQ Classic. It had a little fun kick between the banana peppers and loved sharing it with my best friend. We chose the cauliflower crust and it was still crispy. Also the last two bands SoundStation and Southside Groove were amazing. Another winter visit to Captains Quarters. Three of us this time. We love the water views, whether the ocean, gulf, or river. It was a beautiful day....sunny with river traffic. A very quiet and enjoyable lunch...what beautiful accommodations this restaurant has. SUNNY greeted us at the door to help us in!! Our waitress IZZY was VERY accommodating and helpful. Their menu is very flexible. We opted for the fish sandwich, choice of fried or broiled. I like mine broiled with a little blackening and it came out beautifully prepared. Fries and slaw come with this choice, but onion rings can be switched in. Just so very nice to sometimes sit in a more quiet atmosphere and enjoy the meal. Across the hall is a very active bar. Lots of customers there. So you have your choice. On the way out, MIKE spoke to me as to their reservation protocol. Very reasonable to ask for a 24 hr notice to cancel!! I say this bluntly with love: Hire a chef. Consistently the worst food I've endured for the last 30 years and a menu that is a waste of a beautiful view and fun atmosphere. I've probably been here 20 times in the past couple years and previously held a high opinion. Dined on Valentine's day 2026. We had a reservation for the afternoon and arrived 20 minutes early. We went to the bar to have a beverage and Ashley the bartender prepared a Manhattan that was bordering on a war crime. This drink was not mixed,not shaken,slopped on top of ice cubes and shoved across the bar. I got it for my Valentine who so graciously agreed to come here after a mediocre first meal last time. I ordered a double whiskey, somehow whether it was the house/well option. Suffice to say if the meal stopped there I would rather enjoy mcdonalds and a four loko in the parking lot. It would be more satisfying. We get seated as our reservation time passes and the lovely and effervescent miss Julie is our server. She gets our order and is polite, attentive and had a humor that enhanced the entire experience. The additional cocktails were nice, shout-out to our boy Jimmy at the bar. We order and I got the seafood trio, the lady has the cod sandwich. The shrimp and salmon tasted old almost as if they were trying to use near out of date fish/shellfish. The crab cake was solid. I'd say give it a shot as they're a local business and I'm all for supporting them but taper your expectations because they're going through an interesting period as an establishment. They were sweet enough to knock an app off the bill due to the $24 mix of beverages that I couldn't call suitable cocktails if you had a 9mm pointed at me. Well quite the disappointment from what we've been accustomed to in past years when Mike Englert was Manager. The women's bathroom at 6:30 pm was atrocious. Went back again at 8:00 pm and other patrons were discussing how disgusting the bathroom was. Same stall since 6:30 still not cleaned and another they stated were clogged with paper towels and toilet paper. Kids outside were trampling through the newly planted flowers which I realize is just parents not monitoring. Service was terrible. Only one waitress working the inside. Air conditioning freezing cold. Food we ordered was just mediocre. It was not Captains Quarters as we have known it. Probably won't be going again for a long time. read more

Solid spot. I recently had a chance to take my mom around the city(she doesn't visit often). I wanted to take her somewhere unique but also safe for a sometimes boring taste palette. I decided on Capt Quarters. The food is good. I'm not sure if I'd rave about it but it was good. I think when visiting Capt Quarters, you're going for the atmosphere and views. There are few places along the river from the west to east end of Louisville and there are just a few places to enjoy a meal next to the river on the Indiana side. I would rank Capt Quarters up near the top in all the places you can sit and enjoy food by the river. We each chose an app to share and then ordered an entree. Green chile wontons - We both agreed that we could've ordered 4 orders of these and been completely satisfied with a lunchtime delicious snack. This is definitely a must-order here. Spinach queso and chips - This app also comes with 2 breadsticks. The dip was good. I don't order a lot of spinach things anymore... oxalate foods and kidney stones... Stay away from me! I still had some of it this time. I kind of wish there was an option to add more breadsticks to this dish. Mom ordered one of the salads. I didn't try any of it although she tried to push some of it on me. I COULDN'T BELIEVE the serving size. That could've very easily been the largest salad I've ever seen/been served. We had to take half of it with us. Nashville Hot Catfish Sandwich - I eat hot chicken all the time but I was curious about the catfish. It was good but I didn't even eat most of the bun it came on. Honestly, it doesn't need to be a sandwich. It's delicious without it. Side note: This was the server's favorite and she asked if I wanted honey mustard for it. I actually eat all of my hot chicken with honey mustard so it worked out perfectly! The sandwich also comes with fries. The fries were a bit disappointing. They weren't overly salty(which is good) because I'd rather them not be. With that, I like being able to taste the potato. These fries didn't have much of a taste... at all. At least not on this day. Overall, the place is good! It's definitely great for a lunchtime to take your parent to. While meeting a friend for lunch during a weekday, even with reservations, we still had to wait approx. 15 minutes to be seated. Our server, though polite, was moving a bit slower than I had anticipated in a half-full restaurant: Most guests were seated along the windows and on the patio on this usually warm late autumn day. The Caesar salad was average. The fried green tomatoes were a treat since they're not widely available on menus, those there were still average, at best. One of our favorite places to eat is Captain's quarters and it's been way too long since we ate there. So we decided to take our Grandson there for lunch. There is an amazing view of the river when you sit outside. We asked for an outside table and we were seated on the deck with a wonderful view. The weather was cool so it made for a very pleasant afternoon. They have a wide variety of selections on the menu. I chose the Shrimp and Grits, our Grandson got the Mahi Mahi and my wife got the Cod Tacos. Everything was hot, fresh and delicious. After eating here several times in the past, we drove two and a half hours to Louisville to eat somewhere good and hang around the city for the day. We got to Captain's Quarters and were told the wait was 45 minutes. We waited an hour and a half until we finally asked how much longer until we could be seated. Come to find out, the girl put down the wrong phone number so we had to wait even longer which basically burnt up our entire day! We finally got seated outside since the whole inside was reserved, which was nice until we had to breathe cigarettes and cigars the entire time. I really don't understand why a place like this would allow smoking where people are trying to eat and around lots of kids at that. The wait for the food wasn't bad but the food was refrigerator cold when we got it. Overall for $100 dinner I expected a lot better experience. We probably won't be back. read more

I enjoyed a lovely dinner and drinks with my friends on a balmy Friday night seated at the lower deck near the entrance to Harrod's Creek. We had fabulous views of the waterfront and witnessed boat traffic and nature as we took in the sunset. Our waitstaff were all fantastic. Our server checked on us periodically, refilled drinks, and adjusted our umbrella to keep us in the shade. We started off with the fried green tomato appetizer, which was fantastic with 5 crisp tender slices on a bed of lettuce and dressed with crumbled goat cheese. We also shared a hummus appetizer with roasted peppers, hot pepper rings, crumbled cheese, mixed pitted olives, and soft triangles of pita bread for dipping. I also requested a cocktail, a spicy Bloody Mary, and it was a great accompaniment for the food items. For dinner, I chose a side salad and an appetizer-sized portion of Boom Boom shrimp, which included a half dozen crispy coated shrimp tossed in a spicy chili aioli sauce. All of the food items were well-prepared and had a very appealing presentation. When we were finished with dinner, we meandered over to the outside upper bar area to listen to live music performed by the group Decades, which was fantastic. By this time, the place was extremely busy and louder, so we sat off in a lounge area and people-watched for a bit before finally heading out just prior to sunset. We arrived early, an hour before our 5:30pm reservation, just to walk around and enjoy the riverfront views. We stopped at the inside bar to order drinks, and found outside seats under an umbrella that was perfect for enjoying our friends! At 5:30, we checked in for dinner and were told that our table was ours for only one and half hours, because today is a holiday. Knowing that we normally take about two hours to dine, we hurriedly ordered pizza for our appetizer and tea; both arrived quickly. We proceeded to order a small meal, only a salad, because we felt too rushed to enjoy more within the hour and half allotted for this holiday dinner reservation. Our pizza and salad was delicious, and our tea refreshing. Sadly, we didn't have time to order a main course or dessert, so I can offer little more to this review. Our server was efficient, attentive, and checked on us serval times to ensure we were enjoying ourselves. He did bring the check just before 7:00pm. We paid at the table and departed. Overall, I wish we had been able to stay longer during dinner, I would have enjoyed tasting the Hot Brown or maybe the Shrimp and Grits, but it wasn't meant to be I guess. read more

Captains Quarters is a nice higher end seafood establishment nestled off the Ohio river in the city of Louisville located off of river road. I had variates this establishment a handful of times probably a decade or so ago. I always liked the food and they had a very beautiful interior off memory. Recently my oldest daughter made her 8th grade confirmation and it was during lent so we needed a place for a large party that was a primarily seafood Restaurant not too far from the cathedral downtown. So captains quarters Immediately popped in mind as a perfect place. I called and spoke to the event cordiantor who was very kind and accommodating . Explained our situation of needing reservations for a large group of different families and how time frame was kinda later and not guaranteed (depending if service ran long). So she set us a reservation of 40 for 8:30pm that night. The families came in at staggered times the night of as some stayed back for after mass pics and others headed out immediately to make the reservation time. The staff was well prepared and had our area all set and ready. My memory serves me well as this place still is very elegant and beautiful both on the exterior and the interior. The outdoor patio exterior is beautiful and has cool photo ops of a huge lit up tree, a captain statue, a ship wheel, and a Pegasus statue. It also has amazing river views. This actually made for amazing post confirmation photo ops and the kids adored it and had fun with it. The food and service here also was as great as I remembered. Kind and attentive staff and top notch food. I did start my evening with a Kentucky lemonade which had a great flavor and was a nice smooth alcoholic beverage. For our entrees between 40 we sampled the menu quite well. I'll stick with just my families orders for the review. I personally got the Kentucky hot brown. When thinking back on this place that is the dish I remembered. It was as good as I remembered. Very traditional hot brown style with flavorful monray sauce, tasty turkey and crispy toast and bacon. Very good meal. My wife was a better catholic than me that lent Friday night and got the Seafood trio. She said it was amazing and she loved her meal. My daughters got a ranging variety of foods. This includes a hot catfish sandwich which my oldest loved and I personally thought was unique and different. Think a Nashville hot chicken sandwich except with cat fish and not chicken. The younger ones all got a personal pan pizza which was very good as I got one slice of it. Pretty good for a seafood place that does not specialize in pizzas. My 7 year old got the fish planks or fish sticks and said it was good. She also snatched up some pizza. All of us sampled I believe off others on our celebration party from the peel And eat shrimp to a hummus and bread app. Overall we were very satisfied. Our whole party here had a great visit from the food to the service and to the decor and atmosphere. They were patient with us all and didn't rush and it really made for a perfect spot to celebrate a big event in our children's life. I not only will come back as a regular customer during normal lunch and dinner visits, but I'll plan feature events and parties here as well.
