Thankfully, a Good Samaritan noticed an elderly woman with a walker headed down Midland St. in Poway. Sunview Gardens was ill-eqipped to care for her. The owner knew she had Alzheimer's and even assessed her! She had no problem opening the gate around the perimeter of the house. It is a very small facility; the staff definitely should have been paying closer attention. In addition, we hired a third party care-giver to stay with her overnight one day/night. This person notified us that a caregiver at Sunview literally yelled at our loved one for coming to the breakfast room before it was time. Stay away from this place if your loved one needs Memory Care.

About a month ago, I got the call from mom that no son wants to hear. "Son, I can't stand up". Mom ended up going to the hospital via paramedics where it was determined that she had previously undiscovered congestive heart failure. She already had crippling osteoarthritis, which we knew, but we didn't know mom's ticker was bad. After hospitalization, she spent several weeks in a skilled care facility. We started in search of an assisted care facility. Now understand that mom does have a budget, so it's fair to say that while we can spend some money, this is not a "money is no object" situation. Also, understand that I've been a businessman for over 30 years and I do believe in negotiation, where appropriate. The party on the other side can say yes, no, or meet you in the middle. I visited Sunview Gardens and I thought it was aesthetically quite nice. Felicity seemed like a strong businesswoman, and I can respect that as a businessman. We found a room that we liked and I thought we had agreed on a price, subject to an evaluation of my mother. I also liked the fact that Felicity told me that they did not have a community fee. We got close to admission time and were working on scheduling a day and time to evaluate my mother. Felicity messaged me and told me that she could not do the price that I thought we had agreed upon. Um...okay. Didn't like that, but I didn't spend a lot of time debating it either. Wasn't thrilled, but it wasn't necessarily a deal breaker either. She asked to e-mail me a message, so we could be "clear on fees and charges". In the e-mail, she mentioned a $1,000 non-refundable administrative fee and a $1,000 deposit which would become non-refundable if mom couldn't move in by Monday (this message was received on Wednesday afternoon). These fees were new to me and had not been previously discussed. Again, I did not rule anything out, but I was caught a bit off guard. I was willing to give her a deposit, that day in fact, but wasn't loving the "non-refundable" aspect of it. Further, I had not previously seen a non-refundable "administrative fee" as high as $1,000. The other similar facilities were no more than $500 and one or more were at zero. I asked Felicity, and this is a direct quote, "Also, do you have any flexibility on your $1000 administrative fee? When we looked at other places, the highest fee that we saw was $500, and one of them had no administrative fee." Her reply? "Hi Brad, I am not comfortable with all of this bargaining on our fees. I think it is probably better to find a facility more in your budget range. As you know, there will be level of care increases in the future, should your mom decline. thank you for stopping by and seeing our facilities. Wish you the best in finding a place that is more suited to her budget". So she made the decision to reject my mother and of course I was rather annoyed by it. It's her right to do that, and it's my right to be unhappy about it. The facility is aesthetically nice. My sister wailed like a baby upon learning that my mother's admission request was rejected. Both my mother and I believe that it was a blessing in disguise. While I wish her the best, in turn, I must offer a less-than-ringing endorsement of Sunview Gardens. I respect her right to make business decisions, but I do not have to like the decisions nor the way that she makes them. I also wanted to respond to my sister's ridiculous "counter-review". I did find a nearby room with a private bath, far, far more impressive gardens, zero community fee, zero admin fee, $500 fully refundable deposit and we were told to "take our time" about moving in. I sense that mom is going to get a much higher level of care from a team that I trust. Oh, and they came down $1000 per month. That's called "negotiation", and the owner is "honored" to have my mother stay there. My sister gets caught up on on aesthetics. Cute place. Cute little dog. She had this bizarre little fantasy about visiting her mother there around Christmas. Reality check Laura, it ain't going to happen. This lady rejected your mother. There's absolutely nothing wrong with negotiation. There's absolutely nothing wrong with politely asking about fees that are plainly out-of-line with the competition. Instead my sister attempts to justify them and Felicity's actions. How's that for loyalty? As a side note, as of this writing, there are zero dementia patients at the facility where my mother is going. Only very sharp residents. One was a professor who graduated from Oxford University. And unlike the situation with Felicity, I actually trust the owner and the husband and wife care team that will be looking out for our mother.

If you ever get the opportunity to tour this location totally jump on it, they are of the highest quality when recognizing your loved ones level of care needed and the layout of each home is so perfect. It is exactly the "home environment" I have been looking for in an elderly care location. Let me rave about the activities a little more!!! Scenic drives, art programs, bingo, discussion groups, and PARTIES, PARTIES, PARTIES!! They celebrate EVERYTHING and I never have to worry about my loved one feeling left out of the fun because everyone is included here!!

We feel we're working together with the staff and administrators here to optimize the situation--one person is having trouble adjusting to being away from home; the other calls the Gardens home. Several hospice nurses and two garden volunteers from the community, as well as a few visitors we've met, have assured us that this is generally an excellent place, especially when compared with the range of what's "out there." My own observations are that the staff work cheerfully and are very helpful. They know the residents well, are kind, and have been communicative with us. The activities staff are terrific. Administrators are responsive and staff really engages our loved ones, encouraging them to participate in activities in their building and at the lovely organic produce gardens that supply vegetables and flowers for the care and local communities. The therapeutic gardening program brings in community volunteers and students. One of our seniors with dementia feels that the menu is somewhat repetitive. Admin arranged a meeting with the director of food services, who personally came twice to chat with our relative about it. This person doesn't like vegetables and there are healthy amounts of those given at meals--hence we have a problem for our veggie-hater. We appreciate the admin taking it seriously.

Recovering from a fall and shoulder surgery, I was incorrectly told that the facility offered rehabilitation. It does not. A note from my doctor indicating that I could move around on my own with a walker was treated with scorn. The owner was far more concerned with liability, than finding ways to help me get better. after a time I was able to get some staff members to Monitor me as I pushed myself to move around with a walker. except for an administrator who can dispense medications, staff are largely untrained and uncertified (ie not LVN or RN ) couples or associates from the Philippines. The pharmacy used by this place can be difficult: it took a week for it to send me my medications. patients may do better using vons pharmacy and or bringing in their own medications. There is no RN on duty. The overall impression is that there are never enough staff on duty. The speed of call button requests for help can very quite a bit. occasionally the response to a call button request is almost immediate, but at other times a press of the call button produces no response at all. breakfast consists of a choice between oatmeal and waffles and or eggs. In addition, patients are fed hospital style food at approximately 11 am and 4 pm. free juices are typically limited to orange juice and cranberry juice. Patients are prepared for bed by 6 pm and discouraged from making any call button requests after 8 pm. Morning Care for patients begins at 5 am, so night persons like me will find the daily routine very difficult. and real rest hard to come by. Those looking for a place for loved ones at the last stages of their lives may find what they need. But I would strongly advise looking for and evaluating other options before choosing Gate Manor in San Diego.

But I never got that call, because he really enjoyed it there! He especially liked balloon volleyball, chair yoga, and loved dancing whenever they had music. The staff were fantastic. Liz, the program director, really seemed to have sense of what would or wouldn't work for my husband, and that got us off on the right foot. I'm so grateful for the compassion of the staff and the enormous help it was to me to be able to have a few hours to myself and know that he was looked after so well.

Although the facility is VERY nice, I was really surprised to see he was given a plate with several different types of foods mixed together. He kept asking what this was and what that was, and then he refused to eat. What really surprised me was that this is a facility that caters to older people. Gee, doesn't everyone know that children and very elderly people don't like their foods all mixed together? People like to identify what they're eating and the person who has dementia can't remember what all the foods are (and that they're safe to eat) if you can't identify them. It's just too confusing and it's one more bump in the road they don't deserve!

Would give a 0 star if that were an option…read more I called last Tuesday and spoke to a young lady who made me an appointment for today, Monday 4/29 to take my grandmother to tour the property. We arrived a few mins before our appointment which was at 10am, no one was there. We waited for over 30 mins, called all the numbers on the business cards with no luck getting through to anyone, even the main business card number was disconnected! In addition we saw business cards for Pacifica, thinking maybe they were affiliated which they are not, the individual I spoke with had no idea what Legacy Hills at Poway was. I can't begin to express my disappointment. We even asked a few residents and they said no one is ever at the front desk. Not to mention the tools left parking lot including a table saw!! Completely unprofessional, unacceptable, and a dangerous community.

The worst part of all- they make you believe that if a resident pulls their emergency cord- something will be done. Ha! The alarms are constantly beeping at the front desk and no one cares. Don't rely on anyone checking on you or your loved ones. Resident's packages are left at the front door or on the ground and no one will notify you. The washers don't work and the cards that you have to use don't work. The front desk's answer to this is to call the card company - who never answers the phone! I haven't been able to do my laundry here in a year. There are smokers who sit outside of our windows, and no one will do anything about it. She was exhausted and he was uncomfortable. We were referred to Huntington Gate by the hospice social worker. Placing a loved one in a facility can be overwhelming and Huntington Gate made us feel comfortable, safe and at peace with our decision. The owner, Phillip, knew all the right things to say and helped us along the way. He made us not feel guilty about or decision by explaining the round-the-clock care and how we could now rest and focus on being his family. Our caregiver, Tess and everyone else were so kind and knowledgeable. It's hard to be around such sadness, but they made us feel good. I wish we could have known them longer but my father-in-law went peacefully because of them and we are forever grateful.

The care and especially the love given to him by the staff , was so much more than you could imagine. These people treated him and my whole family like we were their family too. Food was exceptional, healthy and delicious. I will miss my daily visits there but have promised to come and be a regular visitor. My hubby Lew had a beautiful room with a private bathroom. In fact all the residents had their own bathrooms. The location in Poway was in a very beautiful neighborhood of luxury homes with tree lined streets. With only a maximum of 6 residents, the care was very personal.
