One of my favorite responsibilities is running the library. Reading has always been one of my greatest passions, and caring for the library keeps my mind active while allowing me to share that love with others. The friendships I have made here are truly priceless. I enjoy sharing meals, attending activities, and spending time with people who have become like sisters to me. I also appreciate the many opportunities to stay healthy and active. My daily exercise classes, weekly balance class, Mahjong games, Texas Hold'em, Jeopardy, and Password sessions all keep both my body and mind engaged. I especially enjoy the wonderful outings and special events, like the Belmont Village Olympics, which create so many fun memories. To end each week, I look forward to Friday evening Shabbat services lead by my dear friend, Beryl Bosher, here at Belmont Village. Gathering with this special group of Jewish women and men provides comfort, friendship, and a meaningful way to begin the Sabbath together. She was often left waiting 30-40 minutes just to be taken to the dining room for meals -- a situation that happened frequently and caused her significant distress. Eventually, I had to purchase her an electric wheelchair just so she could get to meals on time. But the biggest disappointment came when I was informed -- without warning or any meaningful discussion -- that her monthly rate would jump from $5,950 to $6,370 and then suddenly to over $10,000 a month. I was told this was due to a "reassessment," which felt more like an excuse to justify a massive rate hike than a genuine evaluation of her needs. I attempted to speak with the Director, Tracy Knepple, about this unreasonable increase, but I was met with rudeness and unprofessionalism. I was treated with complete disregard and disrespect, despite being a concerned family member trying to advocate for my mother's care and well-being. As a result, I made the decision to move my mom to a new facility -- one where she is now thriving and no longer has to worry about inconsistent care or unexpected financial strain. I strongly urge anyone considering Belmont Village Sabre Springs to look very carefully at how they handle both care and communication. In our experience, they failed on both fronts.

My mom was elderly, immunocompromised, and recovering from surgery. During her stay, she developed an infection and was clearly becoming increasingly ill. Despite her worsening condition, we felt that her decline was not taken seriously enough and that there was a lack of urgency in getting her the medical attention she needed. When her surgeon identified an infection at her post-op appointment, my mom was sent back to rehab rather than immediately being transferred to the ER. She then had to wait more than a week for a CT scan to determine what was causing the infection. During that time, we watched her health deteriorate drastically. We repeatedly witnessed how sick and weak she was becoming, and as her family, we felt helpless. She needed someone to recognize how serious her condition was and advocate for her before she became even more critically ill. My mom ultimately passed away. There are no words to describe how heartbreaking it is to know that someone you love was so sick and vulnerable, yet you felt like the urgency of her condition wasn't recognized or acted upon quickly enough. We trusted this facility to care for my mom when she was at one of the most vulnerable points in her life, and we feel that she deserved a much higher level of attention, monitoring, communication, and advocacy. She was placed in a wheel chair to receive a CT scan the morning I came to pick her up. Couldn't open her eyes, barely communicate, and the nurse said nothing to me. Just went about things like nothing was wrong with my mom. Our family will live with this loss forever. We only wish that our concerns had been taken more seriously and that more had been done when there was still time.

We feel we're working together with the staff and administrators here to optimize the situation--one person is having trouble adjusting to being away from home; the other calls the Gardens home. Several hospice nurses and two garden volunteers from the community, as well as a few visitors we've met, have assured us that this is generally an excellent place, especially when compared with the range of what's "out there." My own observations are that the staff work cheerfully and are very helpful. They know the residents well, are kind, and have been communicative with us. The activities staff are terrific. Administrators are responsive and staff really engages our loved ones, encouraging them to participate in activities in their building and at the lovely organic produce gardens that supply vegetables and flowers for the care and local communities. The therapeutic gardening program brings in community volunteers and students. One of our seniors with dementia feels that the menu is somewhat repetitive. Admin arranged a meeting with the director of food services, who personally came twice to chat with our relative about it. This person doesn't like vegetables and there are healthy amounts of those given at meals--hence we have a problem for our veggie-hater. We appreciate the admin taking it seriously.

During my stay I was assigned to Fairmont, Wellington II, Lexington, and Santa Fe. Despite those moves, I experienced recurring concerns with completion of my bowel program and missed scheduled suprapubic catheter changes. There were also attempts to coerce me to remain in bed on a scheduled seating day. Because I depend on staff for transfers, had I succumbed to that pressure, it would have affected my independence, routine, and quality of life. A resident should not feel that staying in bed is the only option because assistance is not willingly provided. I repeatedly advocated for myself and participated in meetings. Ultimately, the options presented did not provide a long-term solution compatible with my needs, so I chose another placement. Kyle Dawson (Administrator): It was a pleasure to officially meet you for the first time during what became my final VRB meeting. Thank you for the confirmations of "no" that helped resolve suspicions of my own. Your comments about checking seasoning expiration dates and random tray pulls reminded me of HBO's Getting On. Dark comedy suddenly did not feel so far-fetched. Food has been one of the most persistent complaints I heard during my stay. In my experience, much of it is highly processed, vegetables are often overcooked, and residents have jokingly called the chicken "suspicious" and beef "mystery meat." Checking seasonings and occasionally sampling a tray cannot address concerns about taste, quality, waste, or residents not wanting to eat. I especially commend families who bring meals and spend countless hours ensuring their loved ones are cared for. Your presence does not go unnoticed. To families and staff: advocate, listen, and BE KIND. Everyone is human. To staff who used VRB as a stepping stone and moved forward: I saw myself in you. Keep pursuing work aligned with your purpose. Staff set the tone of a resident's day, and residents deserve care from people who want to provide it. To anyone considering working at VRB or placing a loved one here: know your rights, document concerns, and advocate. Resources include the San Diego County Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, California Department of Public Health (CDPH), San Diego County Adult Protective Services (APS), and California Labor Commissioner's Office--Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE), when applicable. To residents who may never leave VRB, I send unbreakable love and wishes for clean, restful, dignified and bright days. Many people at VRB treated me with compassion, respect, humor, and kindness. They should not be overshadowed by my difficult experiences. My five stars are for ME surviving VRB--and for those with whom I shared both pleasurable and unpleasant moments. I forgive you. My greatest lesson: know your rights, know your care plan, document what happens, and advocate for yourself. I leave VRB without bitterness, but I will not minimize my experience. My believed Grandma Vasquez has the unfortunate experience of dying at this facility. When she entered at 95 she was walking with walker but the facility had her in the bed or wheel chair the entire time at the facility. In her last days she was in excrusiating pain. Fast forward 30 years, and this place was going to let my dad drown in his own fluid because they didn't take his edema seriously. Although my dad has AFIB, diabetes, and Renal failure, they did not order dialysis or a pacemaker. Thank goodness I listened to my gut and called 911. Two months later and my dad is 30 lbs lighter and is no longer on oxygen.
