Three words: best vet ever. We had dr.olrich and wish he also saw people because he was that amazing. The entire staff was exceptionally friendly and knowledgable. They took their time, and there wasn't a single second I felt rushed during my hour appointment. My cat usually won't go near new people but this time he immediately fell in love with the doctor! My dog also fell in love! The nurse was also very courteous. In the end it was a bit pricy but worth every single penny. Bring your pets here pronto! read more

I agree with all the reviews here. I took my cat Reno to Dr. Ullrich last month due to the fact that he's a chronic puker. My rugs have the stains to prove it. He spent time with us, ran some tests, and called back with the (negative) results the next day. He spent about 10 minutes on the phone with me and gave me some suggestions about diet, food allergies, etc. I changed Reno's diet from Innova dry to wet food, per Dr. Ullrich's suggestion, and he seems to be better. Also, I received a 'Welcome to Huron Veterinary Hospital' card in the mail this week, which I think is a nice, personal touch that builds customer loyalty. read more

Another great review for Dr. Ulrich! Our feisty four month old kitten is quite a handful, but he is no match for Dr. Ulrich! Kitty was purring up a storm and when his feisty side came out the doc didn't bat an eye and they were quickly back to being friends. Receptionist and vet techs were also very friendly and loving to our kitten. Cost wise its definitely one of the best values around. We spent about $100 for a half hour exam and blood work. First time appointments are booked fairly far in advance, so be prepared to wait at least a few weeks. read more

Dr Ulrich, and his nurses, are all extraordinarily helpful, and as sweet as it gets. To demonstrate, I will relay a short story: A firend of mine was dogsitting my tiny mutt, and took him out to the country, where he apparently had a good solid run. Two days later, I came home, so find that my dog wasn't walking right, was clearly in pain, and just wasn't right. There had been some mention of "cleaning up the rat poison before we bring your dog out here" so I was a little nervous that maybe he's eaten something, or whatever. I called up Huron Animal Clinic, and explained the symtoms. There was a short silence on the phone, and then the nurse on the other end started with "Have you ever been to the gym, and worked just a little too hard? You know how it doesn't really hurt that day? And even the next day, it's not really bad? But on the third day, everything seizes up and you feel like you can't move? He's gonna be fine. If he's not walking right by thursday ( two days from then) bring him in." I've also called an had them tell me to bring him right down, and they'd take a look and let me know if they thought he needed an appointment. They're great. read more

What a relief! My cat was vomiting a lot, so we decided a vet trip was necessary. My cat (like all, I assume) does not enjoy them very much, and in the past they have always gone terribly. I called Huron first and got an appt about two months in the future, but then called Union Sq vet and got in the following week. Union Sq vet was a disaster. Seriously, awful. Thankfully, I still had my appt for Huron and went there hoping for the best. Dr. Ulrich was incredibly patient with my nervous feline, and with me; his super-nervous owner! I can't say enough nice things about the office... It is such an incredible weight off my shoulders not to be told what a terrible pet owner I am. My cat's problem isn't solved; but I feel like we are well on our way to fixing him, thanks to Dr. Ulrich. read more

Dr. Ulrich and his staff are the BEST! I just starting bringing my 2 kittens to Huron and I couldn't be happier. Dr. Ulrich saw my kitties twice without an appointment which was great since they were both sick and not eating. The kitties loved Dr. Ulrich and he was so good with both of them. He genuinely loves animals! I've called the office quite a few times with kitty 'problems' and the staff has been so helpful. I get a solid answer from them each time I call. I just came back from a visit to Dr. Ulrich's office for my dogs' annual. As always, he was amazing, comforting, and answered all of my ridiculous questions. His staff is also very, very nice and, and there have been many occasions where I have called for a simple question and they have been very helpful, even when I'm sure they were very busy. I know that if they weren't sure of certain questions, they ask Dr. Ulrich and if the situation is serious enough, he has even followed up and called me to make sure my dogs were okay. My dogs are small, but they can get squirmy at times, especially when getting shots. But they got kisses and love and they both got through it without (almost) any problems! So proud of them! I had my first visit today for my cat's annual and it was a great experience. I did have to wait outside but the Doctor called me and talked about various issues at length, he is very kind and personable. I also got the three year rabies vaccine which I didn't know was an option. The staff I interacted with were very friendly and kind with Sushi. Also, it was very affordable. I can't rave enough about them. I think all the 5 stars here should be enough but I'll tell you my reasons anyhow. I have two wonderful dogs, one of them has epilepsy and I feed them both of them raw. Previously I have felt on my own with both of these factors; most vets have no clue about how to deal with epilepsy and just tell me that raw is very dangers and so on and so forth. But this office has astounded me with the knowledge and support that they offer with both of them. I never really figured out what was really wrong with my dog such that he would have constant diarrhea (with blood) and vomiting when he ate regular kibble (and believe me I tried many kinds in the years I had spent trying this and that new special kibble per doctors orders) but after spending lots of time and money doing my own research I discovered raw and he had never been healthier. And for once this vet didn't try to tell me I was doing the wrong thing, he knew a lot about a raw diet, distinguished between what was safe and unsafe practices and has been a partner with me on it. I wish I could sufficiently explain how good it feels to have some one else there to help with this, it is terrifying not to know what to do and have all your paid help either have no good answers and/or be against your solutions. That alone had makes them way above and beyond the rest! And then with the epilepsy he told the the same thing as the super expensive specialist and has since given me nothing but great advice and support. I feel so grateful to have this resource and support so close to me as I really felt alone much of the time before. They are also very reliable and take time to make sure you have what you need. I have called before with a question, left a message and they always try multiple times to get back to me. One call is good but several, thats outstanding. I also recently bought tick and heart worm care (which they, by the way, never push their products on you) and they called me a few months later to see if I had bought some that might expire in 6 months (lest I bought so much it would expire before I finished it) to tell me that I should bring it in and get newer ones. Also, they are happy to answer your questions by phone to see if you can avoid bringing them in (my experience with other vets is that they insist you bring them in, they can't help you with out having seen the animal). I understand needing to see the animal but how many vets do you know that are willing to look at your pets history over the phone to determine whether or not they can just help over the phone first. and although the vet techs are great!!!!, you will be able to chat with the vet himself. They will have him call you if you have one of these questions before recommending you make an app. They let you know asap about lab results, they don't assume you will want every vaccine in the book, and they are just very personable and great with animals. I highly recommend Huron to anyone. read more

I feel so lucky that my dogs were able to have Dr. Ulrich as a veterinarian. I first found Huron Veterinary Hospital after reading the stellar reviews on yelp, and they didn't disappoint. Both my dogs were treated with such kindness and professionalism that I used to drive 45 mins to go here after moving away from Somerville. I've since moved to Colorado, and I haven't found any animal clinic as unique and personalized as Huron. I'm adopting a puppy next month, and I'll be feeding him the same food that was recommended when my dog was seen here as a puppy! This place was recommended to us by several of our friends. My former vet retired and I did not like the group that bought his practice. My cat was critically sick, getting worse every day. Dr. Ulrich was so kind and gentle. Even though he did not know us or my cat, it felt as if he had been our vet forever. When we told him we did not want to engage in extraordinary measures, he gave us home treatment options. He did not pressure us to do anything we did not want to do. And when it was clear that my cat's suffering needed to end, Dr. Ulrich ushered us through it with grace, sensitivity, care, and love. Dr. Ulrich was great to me. He pet me a lot, let me crawl all over his face and shoulders, put this huge metal thing on my rib cage, then gave me the fourth in a series of vaccinations nasally so I didn't have to endure another needle. Plus, he told me that there is evidence of fibrosarcomas at the injection site for some vaccinations, so I appreciated the nasal administration even more. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to having Dr. Ulrich remove my reproductive organs later this month. read more

She actually yelled at me today when my dog accidentally got loose while I was getting my baby out of the car. Since I've been an adult, no person has tried to bully me in such a way. My review is mixed, that's why I give it three stars only. On one hand I appreciate the loving attitude of the vet, Dr. Ulrich, towards my dog, and the doc was very thorough with the paperwork for taking our pooch with us on vacation overseas. OTOH, when my dog ingested some chocolate and I freaked out, rather than trying to understand how much (or rather how little) she ingested, the staff were very quick in suggesting that she have her stomach pumped (for 70 bucks). We established only afterwards that the amount was not enough to have warranted the procedure. Dr. Ulrich also keeps insisting that my pooch is just a typical terrier, when I know that she is overly anxious, which creates problems (such as accidents). I don't like the business aspect of the practice either - all the overpriced food and toys. Last but not least - some of the staff is not very friendly, especially not on the phone. I moved to another city close to Cambridge but won't make the 20 minute trip to continue with the practice. I just didn't feel that welcome and that slight feeling of having to be on guard for unnecessary procedures never passed. read more

Dr. Ulrich and the staff at Huron are as good as it gets. Not like you need another person to tell you that. This place is amazing. I had family dogs when I was younger, but my boyfriend and I got our first and very own puppy this year - a Frenchie named Lunchbox. We searched tirelessly to find the perfect vet before we even brought him home, and Huron is where we landed. We were lucky enough to secure an appointment the week that we got him, and we instantly fell in love with Dr. Ulrich. He was fawning all over our little guy, holding him and kissing him and making sure he was super comfortable throughout the appointment. We are "those" puppy parents who had a million questions for the doc. He answered everything thoroughly, never rushed us, and gave us the advice we needed for raising our new addition. Fast forward 7 months, and he has been into the office for his various vaccinations and, today, his neuter surgery (poor kid). Everything has been a piece of cake with this office. Even when he broke his elbow at 5 months and needed specialized orthopedic surgery that needed to be done at Mass Vet in Woburn (see my other review), we called Huron several times to get their opinion on everything - it was a hellish time for us! They always treated him and us like their patients and reassured us of everything that was going on with his major surgery at Mass Vet. The peace of mind they gave us was invaluable - and didn't cost a thing! Special shout out to Polina, one of the vet techs. She has answered all of our questions over the phone for whatever crazy reasons we've called, and always remembers Lunchbox and makes sure we are comfortable with everything. All of the staff here treat the patients like they are their own pets. Prices for the area are also incredibly reasonable - we have never felt like we were being taken for a ride. They have our absolute trust when it comes to our pup. Cannot recommend them highly enough! read more

My favorite vet office. Dr Ulrich and McEwan are both amazing! They treat our cats with such care - like they were their own. The doctors also make sure that you can make informed decisions and don't talk you into tests or procedures that aren't necessary. With that, I think prices are really fair. Adding to the raves for Huron Animal Clinic and Dr. Ulrich, which I tried thanks to Yelp. I think people have covered most of the reasons why they are awesome, so here, have an anecdote to illustrate how good Dr. Ulrich is with the critters: My cat is generally a sweetheart at the vet, but at the end of her visit, after her vaccinations and some needed extra poking and prodding, she was clearly ready to go. While we were discussing a few last things, she was sitting on the exam table, apparently eying this little space below the cabinet/sink unit on the other side of the room. The minute I lifted my hand off of her, she bolted for it, dove under and wedged herself way in the back. According to Dr. Ulrich, as he got on the floor and carefully reached in, that's a not infrequent cat move. It took a minute, but he fished her out. She looked disgruntled and was a little yowly, but instead of simply dropping her back into the open carrier I was holding out, he held her for minute, talking to her in a sweet voice and got her to let him rub her cheek first. Now that's a guy who really cares about his patients. They might want to block up that space though. read more

I am a former vet tech and have worked both in regular vet offices and emergency veterinary hospitals. Needless to say I'm extremely picky about vets. Unfortunately, many vets rush through appointments and have a bad habit of talking down to clients or not explaining things thoroughly. Dr. Ulrich is the absolute polar opposite of this: he is knowledgeable, caring, and really takes his time with each and every animal (and I should know, I have six: 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 rabbits). And all of my animals love him. When I moved to the area three years ago, I bounced around to a few different vets before I found Dr. Ulrich. Most of the practices I looked at overcharged and/or had condescending or rushed vets. Like I said, I'm picky. Not only is Dr. Ulrich an excellent vet (one of the best I've ever seen)-- skilled at both animal medicine and at interacting with people--his prices are reasonable and having been on the other side of the table, I have a sense of how much these things actually cost and appreciate it when I feel I am not being taken advantage of financially. Highly, highly recommend Dr. Ulrich and this practice. It is a class act. Go see him if you can get an appointment, you won't regret it. read more

Very happy with my experience here. I took my little maltipoo to get her deworming medication and shots. Dr. Ulrich has the touch! Even on the examining table, Ruby was wagging her tail and licking fingers. The nurse was also very gentle. After the shots freaked Ruby out, they helped her calm down with treats and petting. Dr. Leef is the best! We owned an aging Boston Terrier with cancer when we moved to Boston. He received oncology care at another vet out in the suburbs but Dr. Leef was amazing in doing blood work, providing refills for all of meds, and being his cheerleader! As his cancer progressed he needed a procedure every other week to prolong his life. His oncologist charged $300, the other oncologist in Boston charged $450- Dr. Leef only $60! She even taught one of the vet tech's to do the procedure so we only had to pay $30. We ended up getting three more loved filled months with our buddy! Kudos also to the staff who always had a kind word, head pat and a belly rub for our little guy. read more

I'd like to start by saying... this is my first review. A few months ago I took a new kitten home and needed to find a good vet. The vet I took my older cat to had shut down. I would like to thank all you yelpers for consistently giving Dr. Ulrich five stars - that is exactly why I went to him. I could NOT be happier with Dr. Ulrich - he is unbelievable! It is sooo rare these days to find a vet so genuine and kind. He is articulate and friendly and he truly LOVES animals. Huron is pretty great! My girl wasn't too happy to be here (especially after a 45-minute T ride) and spent most of her exam growling and hissing at Dr. Beal. She was gentle, and talked to Dolores (my kitty) to try and calm her down. I took Dolores here for her annual shots and a check up. She had been experiencing a rash on her back, so I had Dr. Beal check it out. Dolores has a long history with allergies, so I figured it was that, and just wanted to know how to deal with it. Instead of running expensive tests or trying to sell me overpriced products, she said that if the rash didn't worsen and didn't seem to bother Dolores, then it was probably fine. She also explained that it's likely I'll never figure out all of Dolores' allergies, and again, as long as she wasn't fazed by it, I probably shouldn't worry. For the Boston area, their prices were excellent. read more

The only issue I have with this vet is the front desk. I've ordered special food to pick up and they've forgotten about it. They don't always return voice mail, or call with results when they say they will. Sometimes they forget to give you a prescription when you check out. The customer service is hit or miss - sometimes you get someone nice at the front desk, sometimes they have an attitude and barely look at you. Sometimes they make you wait to check out for ten minutes while they're playing with another client's puppy. BUT! The doctors here, both Dr. Ullrich and Dr. Leef, are AMAZING. I am 100% satisfied with them and I feel that they truly care about my pets. They are extremely skilled, but also have the most wonderful "bedside manner". Definitely the best vets I have ever had. read more

As others have said, Dr. Ulrich & Huron Animal Clinic are fantastic. Very gentle with my troubled dog. Dr. U's even been willing to consult with a behavioral specialist & do research on new meds (with no extra compensation). The prices here are entirely reasonable, the staff is knowledgeable & kind, & the approach conservative (which means your animal won't be put through unnecessary procedures). As an example: my dog had a ruptured anal gland, something that happened with my cat years ago--I brought him to Cambridge Vet Care, on Mass. Ave., (where the staff is sweet, but the vet doesn't seem to care for animals the way Dr. Ulrich does) & it cost $500 straight-away, for anasthesia & surgery. Dr. Ulrich cleaned the wound & gave us antibiotics. He said that mostly this approach works (& when it doesn't, he proceeds to the next step). This cost around $100. The dog's abscess didn't get better so we had to bring him back for anasthesia & cannulation. This cost just over $100. This is the best animal clinic I've ever been to. UPDATE: Having visited Huron Vet many many times now for a range of weird dog problems, I would increase my rating if it were possible. Dr. Ulrich is unbelievably compassionate. He goes above & beyond. read more

Dr. Ulrich continues to be an amazing veterinarian for my cats and dogs. He explains the pros/cons of various tests/procedures and I appreciate the patience and care he gives to both me and my pets. His staff is also extremely friendly and patient. I can never remember her name (my bad), but his vet tech is awesome! She has a great sense of humor and super knowledgeable. Huron Vet bought the pet grooming/supply store next door and they've remodeled since my last review. Really nice upgrade to an incredible vet office. I had the tragedy of losing a cat (kidney failure) and my dog (lymphoma) in April this year. Once again, Dr. Ulrich was so supportive and patient with me as I went through the end of life care and then suffering through both losses. End of life medical care is really tough as you make hard decisions. It is really important to have a vet who cares about you and your pets and can help you make the right decision. Namely, what's in the best interest of your pet. Dr. Ulrich is very clear about what his vet clinic can handle in terms of medical procedures and will refer you to the larger hospitals if it is a procedure that needs to be done at Angell or MA Vet Referral Hospital. Having been with Dr. Ulrich since he joined in 2007, I can say with great confidence that he is the right veterinarian when you have to make the most difficult choices you'll ever face as a pet owner. I can't recommend him highly enough! read more

I brought our maine coon simba here on short notice, turns out he had a stroke. Dr. Ulrich was really good and explained everything that happened. Even though we lost our cat that day, the place is the best. I must admit the price of everything at the end was WAY lower than I expected. A warning to Maine Coon cat owners, make sure your cat is checked up upon every year for HCM. Maine coons are genetically predispositioned for this disease, which in-turn causes blood clots and eventually the cat-equivalent of a stroke. Have your vet check for this!!!! read more

they are super nice to my cat and kitten. the staff is always friendly and knowledgeable, even if you think you are asking a stupid question. dr. ulrich is nice, i think he hates my cat sweet potato though because she freaks out at the vet and needs to be sedated to get her nails clipped. not his fault though, she is definitely a terror there...haha. only thing i will say is that parking kind of sucks, and the street is busy. so parallel parking is very stressful. it's also hard to find a spot. sometimes you have to park 3 blocks away. but not their fault, just the location. they are really great with animals and really care. they are also open from 11-2 on saturdays, which is amazing. i was recommended to huron from the lady who runs kitty connection in medford (where i got my kitten herman) and have not been disappointed. read more

My puppy, Ollie, (a 9 week boston terrier) went to the vet for the first time to see Dr. McEwan. Dr. McEwan is so genuinely gosh darn nice, and so is every single vet technician and receptionist there. I always feel welcome, they are timely and respectful, and they are responsible and remember both Ollie and his medical records perfectly. The most amazing thing, though, was Dr. McEwan's bedside (table-side) manner. Ollie had to have two shots, and I swear he had no idea they were coming and I suspect that he has no idea that they happened. Ollie loves going to the vet and Dr. McEwan, and I've never seen anything like this with my past dogs. I would recommend Huron Vet to everyone I know with a dog (and my friend loves bringing her cat here too). It was tough to get that first appointment, but totally worth it. :) read more

I used this place in an extreme emergency, my dog had some serious health issues and I could not get over to my normal vet at the time. I was extremely thankful that they allowed me to come in, not being a prior patient and also so last minute. I have yet to get any results. I brought my pooch in on Monday, and today is Saturday. The lab results in which were supposed to take 3 days has now taken 5 days.... Also, their phones haven't been working this whole week... what kind of business is this?! I think I'll now just continue to bring my dog to my normal vet, because I always get results in a timely manner... not by smoke signals! read more

Dr. Beale is awesome. Patient, kind, cheerful and clearly loves the critters. We have a kind of "special medical needs" dog. He has lots of records to read through, lots of history and treatment plans to talk through, and he kind requires bespoke care - and she didn't miss a beat, make us feel rushed, or do anything other than be super kind to our dog and patient and helpful with us! We have been going to Huron Veterinary Hospital with my dog for about 3 years now and I honestly can not be happier. My dog was a nightmare at the vet when we first started coming due to some negative experiences we had a previous place. The amount of patience and understanding that Dr. Mcewan and the rest of the staff have with my dog has been incredible. They have worked so hard to make him feel as comfortable as possible during his check ups and appointments and they have been willing to try many different techniques. Each appointment our dog's behavior has gotten better and our last check up we got through without any of his typical screeching or fighting. The technicians and vets operate together like a finely tuned machine. They don't waste your time, and yet you don't feel rushed, either. We just recently adopted a puppy via PetFinder and were pretty clueless about what vet to use, where to go, etc. etc. We received a few recommendations for Dr. Ulrich and figured it was close enough. We were able to get a weekend appointment within a week and they recommended our fabulous trainer to us as well. The space is adorable, and right next door to the Thirsty Scholar and Boston Dog. It's warm, not too chaotic and we hardly had to wait (and on Saturday!). Dr. Ulrich rocks - super friendly, very personable and totally loves up your dog or cat and makes them feel at ease. He was quick with shots and nurturing, and our pup gave him tons of thanks and kisses in return. Highly recommended! read more
