Brought Patrick in for a follow up visit with Dr. Leaf this AM for his ear. All is good, for the most part. She is a wonderful addition to Dr. Ulrich's practice, as is Dr. Mc.Gee. However, it breaks my heart to even rate Huron Veterinary anything less than 5 Stars. Why? Because I was told by Dr. Leaf that ALL FOLLOW UP CARE and any medications would be covered, which is okay by me. The Front Office and Vet Techs are claiming that's not the case, and I left there after Patrick's Appointment without scheduling another follow up, I was that upset. I think somebody somewhere is trying to double-dip me. I hope it's not the case, because if it is, then the City of Somerville and The State WILL BE GETTING INVOLVED.

I'm something of a crazy cat lady. You need to be when you have a high maintenance handicapped cat. In his seven years, my cat has seen over a dozen vets of varying quality from here to Alaska. How does Dr. Ulrich rank? Well, let's just say I am 99.9% certain that he is a cat god personified. I would follow that man anywhere, although my cat may feel differently about a longer trek. Dr. Ulrich is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, compassionate, and just plain nuts about animals. Out of all my cat's former vets, only Dr. Ulrich recommended not vaccinating him in his healthy back legs in order to avoid possible injection site tumors. It was a relatively simple-sounding idea that had a lot of thought behind it. There may come a time when I'll have to make some important medical decisions on my cat's behalf, and I can't tell you how relieved I am that I'll have Dr. Ulrich to guide me. I completely trust his judgment. Given the popularity of the practice, they could charge just about anything they wanted and people would still pay. However, their prices are insanely reasonable. My cat has had two dental cleanings thus far which are typically spendy. Not at Huron! He had one in 2012 without extractions ($302) and another in 2014 with extractions ($394). And he once spent an entire day there for testing and monitoring as he was having trouble urinating ($155). I always end up spending less than I anticipated. They are also fantastic about getting your pet in quickly when an issue arises. Thankfully it's only happened a few times with my cat, but each time I called first thing in the morning and I was able to bring him in almost immediately. This is immensely important to me as one of my cat's former vets could not fit him in when he had a urine blockage, and I had to take him to an expensive emergency hospital instead. Thus concludes my review which has been over three years in the making. I would encourage anyone and everyone to switch vets immediately, but unfortunately, Huron rarely accepts new patients. But definitely keep on trying! Dr. Ulrich and the Huron team are in a category all their own, and I doubt another practice in Greater Boston could ever eclipse them.

Not for vet reactive pets…read more Prior to this month, I was satisfied overall with Porter Square Vet despite some mild issues, primarily around communication. I don't generally publish complaints but due to the vets unwillingness to discuss their errors, I feel obligated to warn any pet owners with vet-reactive dogs. When I moved to Somerville and brought my dog to Porter Square Vet, I was transparent that my dog is vet reactive. I mentioned that he doesn't like the vet in general but that he doesn't tolerate exams. I also mentioned that I had previously used a fear free vet who was willing to do sedation for annual exams / as needed to ensure adequate care. I was told we could consider that if it proved to be necessary. At my dog's first exam with them, I was given recommendations for dental hygiene products, which i purchase and utilized. At his last exam, I specifically asked about dental cleanings, as I had noticed a good amount of plaque build up on my dogs teeth when I was brushing them. The vet looked at my dogs mouth briefly and I was told it was necessary at that time. I brought my dog in this month due to non-specific behavior changes as well as some dietary issues and worsening bad breath. The vet offered a dental cleaning/check, which I agreed to. The procedure overall went fine, but I was told my dog had significant periodontal disease and that they had removed 14 teeth which was confusing considering I was told a dental clean was not warranted just 5 months prior. Upon voicing my frustration, I was told "the vet was unable to exam his teeth due to being muzzled for the exam." My dog requires additional vet care for which I sought a different practice since Porter Square Vet was unable to develop or follow an appropriate care plan and Porter Square Vet has now opted to ignore me.

They often contradict themselves. For example, they said that stressful situations could kill a cat with a heart condition and so we should never put him in any stressful situations. Then, they said we should take him to a cardiologist (outside their office) twice a year for monitoring. Those are by far the most stressful experiences he's ever been in. Later, they prescribed him a medication in the form of pills that we were to split in half. We were to give him half at each meal. After we ran out of the initial prescription, we wanted them to be delivered. They push people to order medication through Covetrus, rather than Chewy or anything else because they make more money that way (https://covetrus.com/covetrus-platform/prescription-management/online-pharmacy/). So, we tried that. They would not approve the original prescription, and instead asked to buy tablets. They were adamant about that, but those actually were not available on Covetrus. Instead, they said we should get these compounded pills instead of splitting the original-sized pills. The compounded pills are eight times more expensive. We already pay a lot for three other cat medications and could use a break. When I asked to talk to the vet tech about this, the admin said they wouldn't talk to me. In short, something is wrong there. They often don't agree with themselves, and they're not really there to work with you to care for your pet; they're there to get you out of the way.

Dr. Estes explained everything clearly--what was happening, the prognosis, and what we should do next. The techs / nurses--Kim Nguyen, Kendra Baker, and Jennifer Ducharme--were also wonderful: professional, patient, and very caring. They were attentive throughout the entire process while our Pomeranian was undergoing sedation, and you could tell they genuinely cared. I'm sure they see situations like this every day, but they still treated our dog with the attention and care he needed. Small things like that matter. These are clearly very capable people who could work in many different fields--including human medicine--but they choose to care for pets, and it shows. I would absolutely recommend this clinic and would return again if needed. My one tip: call ahead so they can prepare for your arrival.
