This place is amazing! I Am Kimchi is a cozy, little restaurant that serves a variety of Korean dishes as well as a few Italian pastas. If you'd like a big batch of banchan to bring home for the week, they have those too!
I ordered a spicy carbonara and pork cutlet with cheese to go from I am Kimchi and was told that the order would take around 15 minutes. When I got there, the order was ready to be picked up and the first thing I noticed when I got home was the packaging. Everything was neatly packed and for two dishes, you really get the bang for your buck when you count all of the side dishes you get alongside of it. Aside from the number of dishes, you really notice the portion sizes, as both the pork cutlet and the carbonara come in the wide plastic containers, which aren't that shallow either.
The pork cutlet isn't just any normal pork cutlet, as they honestly give you two whole cutlets in there for practically the price of one at other restaurants. They are also not stingy with the cheese as it's basically double-stacked with one layer of cheese on top and one in between pork cutlet layers. Alongside the pork cutlet is a side of rice, Worcestershire sauce, and some shredded cabbage with some salad dressing on top. The cutlet was fried nicely and even though I had to bring it home, it was still crispy by the time I was able to dig in. The cutlet itself was juicy and the cheese offers a layer of savory chewiness. Dipping the cutlet into the sauce though gives it a a sweet and tangy flavor, which makes it even better.
The spicy carbonara may not look intimidating at first, but as you inhale the carbonara, you'll be seeing more and more of those pepper flakes on the bottom. It's not that spicy though in reality and though this is my first time having a spicy carbonara, I think the spice adds a really nice touch, as it cuts through the creaminess of a typical carbonara. A few may be skeptical at first getting carbonara here, but it's really good, as I Am Kimchi balances the creaminess with the spice of the pepper flakes and the saltiness of the bacon. It is still a heavy dish, but not as much as when you have a regular carbonara. In fact, the added banchan really helps ease some of that heaviness as the radish kimchi here has a small kick while the pickled radish and carrots reset your palette. The carbonara alone is plenty for one meal if you're wondering by the way as I'm not really kidding about the large portion size. If you like pasta, it's definitely a dish worth getting, especially when you're getting your money's worth anyways.
If you're looking for the bang for your buck, I Am Kimchi is the place to go if you're looking for some Korean comfort food or something a bit nontraditional like an Italian pasta. I Am Kimchi also has a shrimp aglio olio pasta, which I will definitely be trying next time as I'm curious if they added a twist to that dish as well. read more
