Tried this place for the first time, it was a Saturday night. We arrived around 5:30 table of 2 and there were 2 other large parties. It got busy, almost full house around 6:30ish. There's 2 waitresses and one busser, but I felt only one of the waitress was pulling the weight, while the other (maybe she's the owner?) mostly chatted with one of the table customers. I felt bad for our waitress she was so busy with fulfilling takeouts + dine ins and the dishes require a lot of servicing table side. She couldn't catch 1 second of break :( Food wise, we got their 2 person combo of spicy pork gamja tang and spicy rice cake which came with the steamed egg. Everything was so good, egg was extra fluffy, rice cake was delicious and the meat came right off the bones. They take a good variety of side dishes. My partner wasn't a fan of the gamja tang but due to feeling it's a hassle to eat meat with bones, so those who fee sim may agree. We also asked for the fried rice after we finished the gamja tang, for 2 servings I think it was $4.75 or something. I really enjoyed it but I guess I like scorched rice, also something my partner doesn't enjoy so those we feel sim just note. Environment feels very old school, well worn. Feels cozy. It can get loud very quickly on a Saturday night as this place seems to be a hit for large parties. Since the wait staff is short handed, expect a bit of a wait for things. I'm pretty sure I discovered this spot long before Anthony Bourdain did! It was featured in Parts Unknown Season 9, Episode 4 (Queens), where he dined here with chefs Josh Smookler and Cosme Aguilar. Geo Si Gi is highly known for their signature gamjatang (spicy pork bone soup). Ordered the Gamjatang & Grilled Mackerel Set - $52.95 (for 2) The gamjatang is perfectly spiced - bold and warming without overwhelming heat (and trust me, my spice tolerance is low!). Instead of the usual red kimchi, they load it with long strips of green napa cabbage, cut right before your eyes before serving. Some bean sprouts, watercress on top, with tender potatoes, chewy rice cakes, and massive pork bones that fall right off - so meaty and flavorful. Served with a side of sweet mustard sauce. Pure comfort on a cold day. The grilled mackerel was enormous and incredibly plump - way bigger than expected! As an oily fish, it's rich and satisfying, but we barely made it through a third. If you're a mackerel fan like me, it's a must-order. . Banchan were simple and homey: nothing flashy, just solid classics. Bonus: it comes with fluffy steamed egg (jjim) that rounds out the meal perfectly. I can eat an entire bowl of rice with just the steamed egg . Came in for Sunday dinner with my parents and were promptly seated. This place is known for their pork bone soup, which was perfect in the cold weather. The waitresses were super nice and helped us figure out what to order. We ended up getting Dried Cabbage Gamja Tang with Haemul Pajun (seafood pancake) as a combo for two people. First came the side dishes, which were pretty tasty. 5-10 minutes later, the main dishes came out with purple rice and a serving of steamed egg. They cut up and served the pancake and then scooped bowls of soup for each of us. Everything tasted delicious! This soup was a little spicy, I'd say somewhat mild, but it was too much for my Mom, who's more sensitive to spice. Dad and I enjoyed the mild heat! The soup came with the pork bones - could have been more tender, the meat didn't fall off the bone so you had work at it a little bit. Otherwise, everything was great! We ordered the dried vegetable gamja tang for 2 ($40.95) and gamja jeon (potato pancake) and we had plenty of leftovers. We decided on the dried vegetable version based on their recommendation, and I really liked the additional veggies. It's also only $2 more than the original! The gamja jeon was really crispy on the outside and soft & chewy on the inside. Banchan is generous (with steamed egg too!) and super yummy. Got the full gamgja experience here. Service was quick and efficient, with one lady being especially kind and willing to learn other languages to communicate with the non Korean patrons. Our Gamjatang and Gamjajeon for 2 ($53.95) was Pork Loin Casserole with Potato Pancake. I wasn't sure what each sauce was for, so it was nice a worker pointed it out to us. They also personally give you your first pancake and pour all of the stew for you. I never had to lay a finger on that casserole pot! It was my first time having Potato Pancake. It's probably my least favorite of the potato, kimchi, seafood pancakes, as it was a bit bland and more chewy that I would like, but the sauce surely helps. I can see the casserole warming anyone up on a cold chilly day. In addition to the pork, it came with a bunch of other veggies, so it was packed with flavor! It was also such a filling portion we had to take some home. The meal was pricey but for the portions, it makes sense. I hadn't been to this place for years when I went back last night. I went there thinking it would be the same as it used to be. It seems there has been a change in management. Had I known it would be so terrible, I would not have dined there. The gamjatang wasn't cooked long enough, so it was nearly impossible to break apart the bone pieces. It also didn't have enough vegetables in it, and it tasted pretty bland. Jokbal tasted like it was boiled within any herbs or spices. They don't even have thin metal chopsticks, but if you know how to eat gamjatang, you know you need thin metal chopsticks. The only positives were metal scoop for egg jjim and attentive waitress. I wish I had never gone back to this place. They need to change the name of the place since what they serve isn't geo si gi gamjatang. I'm giving it a one star since the average rating is waaaay too high. read more

This place is such a great spot if you're craving some hearty Korean stew. It's definitely meant to be for groups or at least 2 people to share a pot together. My group got a pork stew with cabbage, mild spicy. If you normally eat spicy like kimchi, the spice level is quite tolerable but if you don't regularly eat spice, the spiciness might be a bit much but still enjoyable. Nice place for a casual dinner with friends - good service and decent food. The restaurant can get a little loud but it feels very cozy and homey. We ordered the donkatsu and beef soondubu. I love soondubu and theirs felt a little watery but it might be because I'm a fan of stews with a concentrated broth and heavy flavoring. I would try other soups next time like their gamja tang instead. The donkatsu was much bigger than I imagined and was pretty good for its price. A little dry but they do refills for the sauce so it wasn't too bad. They also gave us a couple side dishes including the steamed egg which was probably my favorite part of the meal. Best place for spicy potatoes and pork neck soup (gamja tang) , Korean Army stew (budae jjigae), and braised pig trotters (jokbahl) with a few bottles of soju to wash it all down. Space is clean and open with large tables and a wait staff that soaks English too if Korean isn't your first or second language. The bevy is fairly extensive and some just think that the prices are nuts but rest assured they amount of food you get warrants the pricing. On the left side of the main entrance, there is a small car entrance to the parking lot. Max occupancy is 4-5 cars. As long as you are using the restaurant, I think you can use that parking lot. Ordered uh geo gi gamja tang. It tastes as authentic as it can be. It's a bit pricey but I think it's worth the money. Not too spicy, very flavorful, does not taste like msg soup. It's made of pork loin, potato, lots of vegetables, including bean sprout, watercress, cabbage, mushrooms. It comes with side dishes. They are pretty tasty. Im not sure if refill is free, but you can certainly ask for them. You can get a fried rice at the end. They pan fry with rice and some other ingredients using the left over broth. They sometimes do it in front of you and sometimes in the kitchen. This is the best part. Give it a try! Overall, i really recommend it to everyone. read more

It was really cold and windy last night, so I was in the mood for something warm. I read the reviews about this place, and thought gamjatang was for sure going to hit the spot. But... it was kind of a miss.. I went with three other people, and we ordered Uh Geo Gi Gamja Tang (#2), Yet Nal Gamja Jeun (#18), Jok Bal (#20), and Mukenji & Godeung-uh Jjim (#24). We also got a complimentary steamed egg. We definitely over-ordered because the portions were very generous. We got #2 for 3 people, but still had some left. Uh Geo Gi Gamja Tang (#2): This was a 4/10 for me. The meat was very tender, which I love. BUT the soup/broth... lacked flavor. I've had gamjatang in other restaurants and I've always loved the dish because of how heartwarming and flavorful it was. So, this was really disappointing because it was more bland and honestly quite unremarkable. There wasn't any spice to it either. I did add salt to it, which made it slightly better, but not really. Yet Nal Gamja Jeun (#18): This was a 9/10! I've had potato pancakes before, but I think this place does it best! It was crispy on the outside, and very chewy and soft on the inside. It was just really fun to eat. I do think it paired well with the sauce they gave us, but personally, I'd like it to be more on the saltier side. Jok Bal (#20): This was a 8/10. The meat had a really nice bite to it, and I love the contrasting texture of the meat and the skin. The sauce they gave was really good, too. It was quite enjoyable, especially when you eat it after a more savory dish like #24. Godeung-uh Jjim (#24): This is a 9/10. I love strong flavors, so this was my favourite dish. It was sour and savory, and really added a more complex layer to the overall dinner. I love how soft the cabbage was, and the mackerel was also cooked well. I can honestly just pair rice with the sauce because of how good it was. But I don't think this dish is for everyone, especially if you're not that big of a fan of mackerel. We also got the fried rice after we were done with gamjatang. They made it in the same pot as the gamjatang. I think it was good and crispy. I don't know if it's worth paying an extra $4.95 though. Overall, the dinner was okay. I love how nice the servers are, and they refill our side dishes whenever they're empty, which I appreciate. I would give their food five star, but the service could be a lot better. The entire dining experience was very uncomfortable. At the end I felt I was treated like a child rather than a customer. As a non-Korean speaker, I think the communication could be a lot clearer and more friendly. My husband and I l ran into our friends. We were standing by their table and catching up. One of the waitress came up to us said "You should sit (point friend's table) or sit (point our table)". I apologized and thought we were blocking the way. So we moved to the side. A few minutes later, she came to us again said "please you need to sit or sit because..." and pointed to her mask. Then we understood that they want us to have masks on. Everyone's vaccine card and ID card were checked at the door, but we totally understood. I just wish the communication was clearer to avoid the awkwardness. We sat down and my husband's napkin fell on the floor. One of the waitresses was kind to pick it up for him but she put it right back on the table. We didn't say anything but put that aside. With or without Covid, we wouldn't use a napkin that just fell on the floor. We ordered the fried rice that many reviews recommended. I wish the waitress could explained better to us that the fried rice was cooked on the same stove as the broth. We did not know that. Rather than telling us directly, the waitress kept asking if we want to take the broth to go or if we want the fried rice later. We were so confused. Until she pointed to the stove saying it's too hot, we understood why she asked that. Then I felt so embarrassed knowing broth and fried rice can't be cooked on the stove at the same time. The last straw was when the waitress told us that we should put the bones in the stainless steel bucket rather than on one of the empty side dish. My husband and I felt really embarrassed to be told where we should put the bones and felt like we were not being considerate for putting bones in different places. We are not Korean and we don't know about this, but I do believe the same meaning can be conveyed in a more polite manner. I like the food and one of the waitresses was friendly but the other waitress was very focused on telling us what to do, and she didn't remember to bring the soda we ordered. Their service to Korean speaking customers seem very welcoming. We never felt this way dining in any other Korean owned businesses in the area. It's been so long since I've had a decent Gam Ja Tang. I thought I would never find any good ones out in New York and would have to go to LA to find any decent options. Fortunately this makes a bomb ass version of it. The flavors are pretty much on point and while it's not as good as the LA one, it still really good and they provide all the amazing condiments that come with it, including the wasabi soy sauce to dip it in. At the end of the meal, you can add fried rice to the leftover liquid in the food and make a nicely flavored fried rice with it to wrap out the meal. The banchan was also pretty well made here. You get the option of red or white rice and I'd recommend the red one if they still have some left. Overall a great option though you have to go quite a bit a ways if you're in Manhattan to get it. read more

They no longer have the set menu and the prices have gone up bc of covid but it's worth it! We always get the Geo Si Gi Gamja Tang. Love the fresh watercress and vegetables that come with the pork stew. We usually get the Jok bol as well and recently started getting the Bossam which is AMAZING. The side dishes are delicious as well. The portions are pretty generous here, even for takeout but the leftovers reheat very well so no complaints there. The food is seriously delicious and lots of food choices in their menu. They have combo choices of food for groups. We start of with seafood pancake which we enjoyed. Its soft and lots of seafood. For main dish we had the gamja tang+ mukeunji bossam for 4 people and its a lot of food for us. Its a huge pot of pork meatbone soup and it comes with a plate of slices of pork with oyster on the side. Its actually my first time eating this type of korean food and for sure not my last because I'm surely going back. I enjoyed everything from the soup to the side dish and that soft pork that you eat with raw oyster and some kimchi. I love this place. The place is clean, the food is yummy and the servers are nice. If takeout, it comes in a large container with vegetables(raw) on the side. Then you will have to put everything together in your own pot and cook it. During a cold rainy day, we saw many people order takeout and not many dine in. Let's dig into the food. First of all, when they claim that a two people combo serves two people. Don't believe it! It can serve at least 3 people. We got the two people combo #3($63.95) which included the basic Gamja Tang(pork backbone soup) and the Maewun Jokbal(pork trotter in a sweet and spicy sauce). They can upgrade the Tang with extra cost. The soup tasted a bit milky probably due to the hours of boiling the backbones. Lots of tender meat on the backbones. If you like pork, you have to try the Maewun Jokbal. The spices mixed with the sweetness went perfectly with the meat and fat around the meat. Definitely need to get that.
