I was curious to see what they had compared to Linit's goodlicious fresh donuts, kolaches, and other morning goodies... as he had a solid FIVE STARS from me and I'm sure pretty much everyone else who had crossed his threshold! It was sad to have him move out of state and lose all those goodies... but... Anyway, walking in I was greeted by two smiling faces and one sleepy one... the young daughter of the owner. She's not quite two, but is adorable! I asked if I could take pictures and got the okay... they're not quite finished with everything, but have opened and are working around getting everything else put in place. I have to say WOW on what's in their bakery cases... it's edible ART. BEAUTIFUL. Abel, the owner, came from LA to the little town of Shelbyville to escape the madness that is California; he lived there 15 years. He and his wife are so sweet... I feel like family! They are so welcoming... This is a more Hispanic type bakery than an "American" type... and the bakery cases are filled with breads almost too pretty to eat... cheesecakes, tarts, flan, many gorgeous sweets I have no idea what they are but I want... mega YUM... beautifully decorated cakes and pies that one doesn't normally see around here... it's a literal feast for the eyes before you ever buy anything to eat!!! (I do need to brush up on my Spanish, as English is their second language... but Abel's English is fantastic. No one will have a problem understanding anyone, I don't think.) They offer free coffee with purchase, and if you had been there when Abel had brought out a fresh tray of croissants straight out of the oven... I'm talking SWOON!!! Oh yeah... y'all have to stop in. You really do. The visual makes you want one of EVERYTHING. I think he and his family will do well. Wedding cakes or quinceañeras... parties... birthdays... Abel and his lovely family can handle it beautifully; literally AND figuratively!

**UPDATE ON THE CLOSURE** I just found out my hard working friend has moved to either Alabama or…read moreGeorgia... he just couldn't make any money here in Shelbyville. He was such a hard worker... he managed to bring his wife and adorable toddler daughter over here from his homeland of Cambodia only to find out that this town just wasn't it. He didn't charge high prices... we loved him for that... but he and his family ARE better off somewhere he can make what he needs to... as I bet he's sending money to family in Cambodia and supporting family there as well as his little family here... God bless him! He's missed by so many; I've fielded questions off Yelp and just in the last few days FINALLY found out from a cop friend of mine where he went... cops and donuts. What can I say? It came in handy for me on here!!! ; ) BAD NEWS... I JUST WENT BY AND THEY ARE GONE. Yep... GONE!!! There is a "FOR RENT" sign in the window. I have no idea when my lovely family from Cambodia and their selection of delectable treats closed their doors, but they have. I was astounded to almost pull in this morning and realize the neon "OPEN" sign wasn't on, and in its place was the "FOR RENT" one. I have driven past later in the day and seen the neon one dark, but it's turned off when everything is sold, so it didn't mean much. He could have been gone for WEEKS now, and with traffic and such, I wouldn't have taken much more time to do more than glance over to check and see if the "OPEN" sign was glowing or not. I really, REALLY, want to know what happened. These were the hardest working people I've ever met. Linit finally brought his wife and adorable little girl over from Cambodia, and they got to stay for a few months on a visa, then went back... and then the process started over again. That's love. Maybe I can ask the people who run the cute Hispanic ice cream shop next door... they might have an inkling. It couldn't hurt. As for now, I'm more heartbroken about my family if three being MIA than I am about Shelbyville losing the literal Best Donuts ever...

With an impressive 4.77 rating across all user-driven platforms online (108 total votes and…read morecounting), you would imagine Fresh Donuts would live up to the hype. On paper - actually on an Excel spreadsheet I created - those scores rank them as the third best donuts in Middle Tennessee! Having now eaten at the entire top 25 donut spots, I can provide my impartial review. I found this tiny, unassuming shop in a strip mall with no sign. Unlabeled with a lackluster, no-frills interior, you'll find the secret store adjacent to a Fantastic Sam's southwest of downtown Columbia. In the first few bites, I realized that the donuts at Fresh Donuts were shockingly mediocre for such lofty ratings. But you must consider that a Columbia 4.77 isn't a Nashville 4.77. In a smaller town with fewer bakery options, ratings are always going to be skewed higher. That's true throughout the country. To pull off a 4.77 in Nashville is nearly impossible unless you have a really special product that distinguishes itself among some serious competition! So you must temper your expectations in a town of fewer than 50,000. The maple frosted donut here, my favorite donut flavor, wasn't bad. But it struck me as average and unremarkable. The cinnamon twist wasn't as light and airy as some of the exemplary versions you'll find in Nashville, and the cinnamon was nearly undetectable. While the donuts were fresh even in the late afternoon with a dwindling supply, which is impressive and lives up to the name Fresh Donuts, I wouldn't make this a destination for Nashvillians who are thinking of driving an hour down to Columbia. If you happen to be in Columbia, yes, this is a good stop for donuts. But don't make a road trip out of it just to sample what are allegedly the third-best donuts in the region. They simply aren't what the ratings imply, and I made the trip so you wouldn't have to.

They called me to let me know the line at the drive up window was VERY long and delivery would be a bit longer than expected... which is fine. I don't mind, as they are going out into the scary virus ridden world to bring me a breakfast sandwich and some calorie laden donuts I certainly don't need... as I have gotten the "done lap" disease from too much self care in the kitchen, if y'all know what I mean... self CONTROL has exited the building! (If y'all see mine? PLEASE SEND IT HOME!!!!!!) The human followed instructions and rang my doorbell, leaving my order at my door. I brought it in, and opened the bag with my breakfast sandwich first. Literally did an LOL. Just look at the pictures of what $3.99 bought. It's barely a quarter of an inch thick. I just giggled typing this as WTH?!? Did a South Park "Mmmmmkay" and opened the box of a dozen donuts and found they totally messed up the order. (Several were even UPSIDE DOWN) Wow. I know they had a busy drive through, but really? That's NOT how one gets return customers... and the delivery service isn't allowed to open anything to make sure it's correct. It really, REALLY wasn't. What surprised me the most was the taste of the few donuts I tried. Having been the first time at this location, I compared it to the one on South Church Street in Murfreesboro. These are in no way comparable. Lacking in taste in every way possible. Not sure how they did that... aren't Dunkin Donuts all the same? I'll have to ask the people I gave all the others to as well. Not happy at all, but places have off days. Everyone does. I'll give this place a month or two and try again. 931 Delivers is giving me credit for the hilarious breakfast sandwich although I told them not to... it wasn't necessary... but they got such a good laugh about it they insisted, and they appreciate the big tips I always give their people. Why wouldn't I? I hope y'all do too... they're ESSENTIAL!!!

First impressions from…read morethe parking lot don't say much, but once inside I was greeted with genuine Southern hospitality from who I assume was the owner and his family. They offered me a free glazed donut since it was my first visit, and it was superb -- soft, perfectly glazed, clearly handmade, and not full of air like Krispy Kreme donuts. I asked for recommendations and was pointed to the honey buns since they were out of their other best sellers. I ordered a honey bun and a maple éclair. The honey bun was honestly one of the best I've ever had. The éclair was cream-filled with maple glaze and absolutely delightful. The filling was a little too sweet for my personal taste (I'm not big on super sweet desserts), but that's not a knock on the place. In my opinion, about half the filling with that maple glaze would be perfect -- and adding bacon would take it over the top. They also appear to serve lunch, which looked very appetizing. I was there strictly for donuts this time, but I'll definitely be back to try it if the food is anything like the pastries. All in all, this place is a hidden gem. I highly recommend giving them a try if you're in the area -- you won't be disappointed. It's always great to support local businesses over corporate chains with half the quality. Give these guys a shot.

And as popular as this spot is, they sell out well before 3:00 every single day! Finally, I made the pilgrimage to the Lewisburg Donut Shop on a weekday morning and found it open! Hallelujah! And indeed, the donuts did not disappoint. The apple fritter is among the best I've had, almost as good as Fox's in Green Hills. But that maple with a soft, yeasty, melt-in-your-mouth dough is astounding! I can understand the lofty ratings now!
