Icha has some pretty fancy teas. I got the Rose Jasmine with tapioca, which was nice but I would've preferred plain Jasmine. Maybe I just can't appreciate fine teas. One cool thing they do though is brew the tea right in front of you. I got 50% sugar but that wasn't sweet enough for me (healthier, I suppose). They might not use that much sugar to begin with to emphasize the flavors of the tea. What sets this place apart from other boba shops I've been to is the storefront itself. Love the ambiance--the tea house is almost like a hidden gem within Chinatown! Definitely a great place to hang out with friends or take a cute Instagram picture. I came here with my sister for bubble tea. I normally drink more westernized or fruity flavours so I wasn't sure whether the bubble tea flavours they offered were to my taste. However, I decided to try something new so I ordered Taro milk tea while my sister ordered the classic milk tea. Both of us being very sensitive to dairy products, ordered soy milk as replacement. (Extra 50 cents). I wasn't expecting much to be honest, but I was very surprised by the taste. It was very smooth and sweeter than I expected. I was a fan! The front part of the restaurant has high tops and that area was reserved more for light chatter. When you went further to the back, there were actually quite some people studying silently on their laptops so it wasn't somewhere you would sit to chat. Icha is probably my favourite Toronto tea shop. I really enjoy the quality of tea here and calm ambiance. I come here a lot to enjoy some time to myself to read or do some light work on my laptop during specific hours that don't conflict with "tea time" generally on weekends before 5pm, the shop has a rule to put away laptops and try to engage in more conversation or things aside from being on a screen. Besides their tea, there is also a small dessert menu and opportunities to purchase some of their teas to make at home as well. My favourites here are the Rose Dian Hong Black tea and classic milk tea both iced or hot. Icha is a great place for getting into deep reflection and conversation. I really love the shops furniture, layout and they play pretty peaceful music here. Also a fan of their elegant yet simple branding here. I really wanted to like Icha Tea. It looked and felt legit. In fact, the tea itself was pretty good. But, the boba really missed the mark. It was the hardest boba I had in a very long time, which kinda just ruined the whole drink for me. I also went when they just barely opened, so it took a while for them to prepare the boba. I thought that meant it would be fresh and warm, but perhaps maybe they rushed it since they weren't ready. However, staff was friendly and helpful! If you want to try this place, opt for no boba! I really love this place for it's individuality and great hot spot for tea. They have different unique flavours of tea that you can have hot or cold ans you can even add toppings to the drinks so it's like bubble tea. But best thing is, all the drinks are made to order. Yes. They brew the tea made to order for you! They even have a tea tasting section inside for you to try different flavours of tea, it's great. Second best thing about this place to top it off (literally) is the cheese foam. The cheese foam at Icha is the best one I've ever had. The consistency of the foam is the same no matter when I go and they also make it fresh daily. Sometimes I'll wait the 5-10 minutes for them to make fresh cheese foam because it's that good. The options they have that go with cheese foam aren't bad either. I personally like the chrysanthemum pu'er tea with cheese foam because of the light floral taste. Also another good thing about Icha is surprisingly the big space inside. I saw a lot of people coming inside to study and do some work, so that's always a bonus. I like the atmosphere here, very edgy and cool. My favorite tea here is rose jasmine tea. You can literally taste the rose flavor. Also, I would recommend try their osmanthus flower cheesecake. Normally, I only get bubble tea because my friend drags me along to satisfy her bubble tea craving. This place is different. The drinks are made with freshly brewed tea, which obviously takes longer to make but is so worth it. The drinks are also a little more expensive than your typical bubble tea, but again, it's worth it. I got the rose jasmine bubble tea, and it was absolutely delicious. I think the sugar is already toned down here compared to your average bubble tea, so even if you normally reduce down to 50% sugar in your standard bubble tea/latte/frappuccino, I wouldn't recommend doing that here. The interior is really nice. At first glance, it looks like a super tiny shop, but once you walked inside, there's a nice sitting area in the back. I wish I had taken pictures to show just how nice this place looks. There's an intimate vibe that makes this place seem like it'd be really good for studying and just having a quiet chat with a friend. A great matcha latte is hard to come by in Toronto. Using the best (or even a good) grade of matcha, then knowing how to whisk & froth it, and balancing the tea with milk to maintain the vegetal taste while not being too bitter... oh the quest continues to find a good one. Icha Tea is on the south side of the old Toronto Spadina Chinatown. It's a quaint little cafe that is recessed from the street edge. It offers a little small outdoor seating in the summer but in the usual Canadian winter, you have seating inside. I have to appreciate how they redid the front to be modern with it's slate gray paint on the old building, stonework on the groun, and use of nice warm woods for their signage. It modernizes and makes a nice first impression. The cafe has their take out area in the front and in the back, it has seating and tables for their tea ceremonies. Though I would have loved to try their tea ceremonies, I didn't have the luxury of time for it. As for service, it's prompt, considerate, and thoughtful. When they hand you the drink, they dont throw it on the counter but rather hold it out to you for you receive, smile at you, and say thank you. It's a small courtesy but I do think just pleasant service like that isn't so common anymore. So that small interaction just makes me give this the nod above other spots. Matcha Latte (hot & soy milk) - Hand frothed using a bamboo whisk and using tea ceremony grade matcha made me believe this would be a good drink. Unfortunately my sips was not the same as the expectations. I found the tea to milk really unbalanced... too watery and diluted. I want to say what it tastes like (bitter, vegetal... something) but it honestly tasted more like watery soy milk with a hint of bitterness. Even with the higher price point of $8+ (tax & tip in), it was a very expensive watery tea. 2/5 Maybe it was an off day and seeing the other reviews, maybe it was. Currently obsessed with their soy iced matcha latte. Younger me we would have definitely gotten it with full sugar but now that I'm old, I can't handle it, so 50% sweetness is perfect. It had a very light floral taste but mostly just tasted like milk. I appreciate how he actually recommended a specific item vs oh, everything's good though! Also, the guy actually cares about his work. But in the back of the cafe, there's a large seating area for multiple tables that offers traditional tea ceremonies and space for guests to eat their desserts. After a heavy lunch, my friends and I wanted a spot to drink something refreshing to wake us up from our food coma while we did some work, and Icha was a great spot for it. The ambiance of the cafe was calm and helped me focus while I worked here in the afternoon. The wifi is strong and overall it isn't too loud. The front area offered different milk tea, regular fresh tea, cheese foam teas, and lattes. I got an iced matcha latte with boba from here. They whisked and frothed the tea (which was a pretty high grade matcha too!) in front of me and poured it into the milk carefully, which was definitely an appreciated attention to detail. The drink itself wasn't too sweet and definitely still tasted like green tea without being too bitter. While I chatted with the barista, I found Icha is a fairly young cafe and has been around for only six months. While I wish I'd gotten a chance to sample their desserts or the variety of green, black, and oolong teas in the back of their shop, I know that Icha will still be around for me to visit the next time I'm in Toronto. This place does not just have your typical bubble tea but they also have a ceremonial tea bar. I've been here a few times already and got to try numerous drinks. There are two sections in this small shop, first is where they make hot/iced teas and when you walk further into the cafe, there's a hot tea bar. First time I ordered the milk scented oolong tea and they came to my table when they were done preparing it (very interesting & yummy). Other times, I tried their regular milk tea (aromatic), iced matcha latte (my absolute favorite) and chrysanthemum tea (amazing). I would say this is the best and most comfortable bbt place I have ever experienced in GTA area. They offer the really high quality products. Most of the ingredients were imported from overseas. Their matcha product is a must try item. They use the authentic high quality Japanese matcha powder (which you can only buy in Japan) for making tea. If you like your tea bad and boujee, then you're at the right place. The handcrafted teas are made before your eyes and unlike other bubble tea shops the tea doesn't come out of a huge jug (not that I'm hating on huge jugs of tea). I can't say I can really taste the difference in the quality (maybe I lack a refined palate for tea). I've tried the matcha tea and the black milk tea and I have to say the matcha does have a nice flavour but I don't really care to pay a premium on slightly better quality tea when I can easily walk down the street for a cheaper cup of tea. The best part about Icha is probably the backroom which has plenty of seating where you can find tons of students studying. If you like tea and can actually discern the quality of your drink, then this is the place for you. If you just want a cup of bubble tea without paying and arm and a leg for it, then I'd pass on this place. read more

This is a great spot on Spadina. It doesn't look like much from the outside--it actually looks really small--but once you go inside, it's surprisingly deep and spacious. This is a tea lover's dream, as they have everything from a selection of hand-brewed milk teas that can be accessorized with things like boba (aka pearls) to an actual tea bar where a tea master brews artisan tea tasting flights for you. At the same time, they also have good wifi, and lots of people hang out in the back and do work. I was there a couple times on my last trip (a year ago) and this time I've been back twice--each time getting warm chrysanthemum milk tea, unsweetened, with boba added. They made a point of telling me each time that it would be warm (rather than hot) because of the boba. Warm worked, and the tea's warm, comforting energy matches the vibe of the whole place. The staff is friendly, and the tea bar contributes a certain zen to it all. If I lived in Toronto, I suspect this would be one of my go-to spots when I needed to do work. Prices aren't super cheap, but given the quality of the tea they're using (and the fact that they're actually brewing it), the pleasant surroundings and the fact that you could camp out here all day, it's a fair deal. I had never noticed this place existed until a friend brought me here. It can be easy to miss as it's tucked in a few metres from the sidewalk. Inside is quite nice and clean. The display of teas and the fact that there is a tea bar gave me the sense that the tea would be of high quality. There is no raised barrier at the counter so you can see them make your drink unobstructed. I had the classic milk tea with less sugar. It was definitely a lot less sweet than I expected when compared to other places like kung fu tea or chatime. The tea flavour was pleasant (more noticeable because of the reduced sugar) and was satisfying overall. My friend got the mango tea. We saw the tea being prepared in front of us in a round glass tea steeping contraption which was cool. I didn't get to try it but can only imagine it was refreshingly satisfying. read more

One thing that makes Icha Tea stand out is the fact that they steep the tea leaves right in front of you and then they add the milk to it (for the milk tea). It's a cozy and warm atmosphere and the overall experience was lovely. It's a bit more expensive than other bubble tea locations but the floral tea and the experience makes up for it. I ordered the Chrysanthemum Pure Crafted Milk Tea with Lychee bits and regular sugar (I highly recommend that you get regular sugar because some of the teas may be darker than others). I really, really, REALLY wanted to love Icha Tea but I have to say that it was missing juuuuust a little something something for me and overall, don't think that Icha Tea is my cup of tea (slow clap for my pun!). We hit up Icha late Saturday evening and there were quite a number of people queueing up for their tea fix. I could really tell that they've built up a solid fan base. Location was easy to find, set up of the store was nicely done as well. This is a great spot to hang out for catch-ups as it's not too noisy. Menu isn't too large and for someone who has difficulty making decisions on what to order all the time (that's me if you couldn't guess), this was a nice change. We ordered the Rose Jasmine Milk Tea, Roasted Oolong Milk Tea, and Matcha Latte. Sharing is caring so I tried everyone's drink (thanks friends!) Personal opinion of course but I felt like I was drinking pure milk from each drink even though I saw the tearista brewing the tea right in front of me :( Matcha latte was...interesting. I liked that it maintained the bitter matcha flavour which is great but I was not a fan of the after taste. Really cool to watch the tearista whip this one up right in front of us! Icha Tea is a different kind of tea shop. it's take the concept of drip coffee which is all the rage now and applies it to the traditional tea process. Depending on which type of tea you choose (milk or regular), they create each drink from scratch so patience is key! They put the tea leaves and other flora ingredients into a pot, pour hot water into the bowl and place it on top of a dripper. I had a jasmine rose petal tea and it was refreshing. I really enjoyed it. Although the shop looks small in the front, there is a great chillout space in the back for some restive introspection, reading a book, or getting some work done. While the drink menu might be limited compared to other bubble tea places I've been to, their drinks are delicious and the tea tastes of very high quality. This is most definitely my new favorite local matcha spot in Toronto. I tried both their hot and cold matcha lattes half sweet and I can tell by the texture they carefully whisked the matcha to perfection. I have to say the tapioca was under whelming as chewing it the balls weren't soft all the way through. I can't forget to mention the atmosphere at this tea shop is wonderful.
