We always hit this restaurant for lunch before heading into Vancouver BC from Seattle. We have been visiting for nearly 20 years. Today we ordered several bento meals: Nigiri, Sakura and Yume. The raw fish is always super fresh. The tempura pieces are perfectly crisp and light. Love the sunomono salad that comes with potato starch noodles in a sweet rice vinegar and lemon slices. I like coming here for some home style cooked Japanese food. It has quite an extensive selection of the non sushi rolls items. The lunch sets are also pretty affordable. When the weather is cold or cool, it is great to have sukiyaki or nabeyaki. The warm food hits the spot. There are also some grilled items and yakitori. Another set I like is the ichiro okazu. You get 6 kinds of appetizer plus sushi, tofu, salad and soup. It is not super filling but it is just nice. You can also add on other items like poke, sashimi, tempura etc to your set at a lower price. The food quality is there and it is generally filled with older Japanese diners, so you know it has passed their standards. Service is friendly and quick. Press a buzzer to get service. We went here on a recommendation from a friend since we are visiting from Washington state. Great quality fish, good service and just an all around great meal. The fish was very fresh and we loved our chirashi dons. The nigiri we had was very good as well, but a bit too much rice if we were to critique. Update during Lockdown: Checked out their Special Menu online for take out during this lockdown period and found out that they still have lots to offer and especially their selection of bento boxes are all $14.95 which is a great deal considering the amount of food you get and comes with Miso Soup too! All their rolls are well executed and have a balance of rice / fish ratio, my personal favourite is their Spicy Tuna Roll, for take out they even pack the spicy sauce separately for you to add later! Great spot for Japanese food in Steveston, but it is on the pricey side which is why I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 4. I came for dinner on Thursday with a friend. I didn't need to, but I called ahead and made a reservation for 7:30 just in case. It wasn't that busy when we arrived, with only a couple tables seated. Note that Yelp lists the closing hours at 8 pm, but it was 9 pm on the day I came (and is listed as 9 pm on Google too). They have a large menu selection which felt a bit overwhelming, but it helps that they have pictures for most of the menu items. We shared the following dishes: Shrimp tempura ($11.95) - this was fried well with the perfect amount of crisp. Comes with 6 pieces so it's great for sharing! My favorite dish of the night. Calamari ($8.95) - I was underwhelmed by this dish. It was quite bland and hard to chew. Hamachi kama ($19.50 for medium) - decent but some of the meat was a bit dry Deluxe assorted sushi ($30) - I didn't get to try everything on the plate since we were sharing everything, but all the rolls and nigiri I had were pretty good Service was pretty good. Our server was quite attentive and refilled our tea 3-4 times the entire time we were there. Went to ichiro for the first time and it will be the last. Decor is in dire need of a makeover. It looks like they bought the furniture from a retirement home that was closing down. We ordered a few appetizers and rolls and I couldn't eat most as there was a very fishy taste even in the chicken dishes. The gomae had absolutely no flavour had to ask for the sesame dressing as there was none on the dish. We didn't think much of anything else. It's as if the chefs have lost enthusiasm for their job. It was so wonderful! Usually for these kind of set meals, you are usually stuck with a lot of fillers that you don't enjoy eating. But I have to say for this set, we loved absolutely everything! Good variety and I mean the option is endless. I used to come here if I am having one of those days where I can't quite pin down what I feel like exactly. Their bbq squid is usually my must have here. It is done perfectly. I also really like their takoyaki. It is a ball-shaped Japanese snack or appetizer made of a white flour based batter. It is typically filled with minced octopus. The sauce is perfect. The also make sushi here however, I do prefer their appetizers. Street parking or free angle parking at the front of the restaurant. I grew up eating at Ichiro and their food quality has always been consistent. In my latest visit, I learned that Ichiro had an owner change and u definitely saw a menu change as well. Don't get me wrong, the change is a positive one because there were many new creative dishes! _ We ordered the sushi and sashimi boat, Ichiro Super Don, Lobster roll. I have to say, the PRESENTATION was amazing!! I don't usually order a boat but the fresh assorted sashimi and along with very adorable ball shaped sushi made it difficult to not order again. Of course, I wasn't disappointed at all because it satisfied my craving for fresh fish. I believe the selection changes depending on the season but your usual cuts like Salmon and Tuna will be there. The Ichiro Super Don was another meaty and excellent dish. The chicken kaarage and tempura were crispy while the unagi was sticky, delicious. The Wagyu beef was thinly sliced and very tender. I recommend this dish for sharing if someone in your party needs a bit more food to feel full. The next dish which was an absolute show stopper, was the gigantic lobster roll. They tempura battered the lobster claw so it was great to have a chunk of lobster meat to chew on. The roll itself reminded me of a rainbow roll and it was difficult to differentiate the lobster meat in the roll. However, taste and flavour was great with the ingredients being fresh. Definitely my go to sushi place in Steveston! Also, their desserts like the black sesame Japanese cheesecake is a winner. It seems like I've been waiting to go to Ichiro Japanese Restaurant in Steveston for ages but, in the past, I've always wound up filling up on fish and chips instead. Well, in March this year, we decided to change things up a bit. We still got fish and chips from Pajos but we only ordered a small serving to save room for our visit to Ichiro. This restaurant is super busy and was practically full as soon as they opened. Their menu is rather extensive so it's a bit difficult to decide what to order. I like that their menu is more typical of a Japanese restaurant instead of the generic "sushi" places that you find all over town. The Sashimi Boat Set ($30) was the first to arrive and contained an assortment of sashimi... including tuna, salmon, yellowtail, surf clam, octopus, sweet shrimp, red tuna, and white fish. It also came with chicken karaage, spring roll, steamed rice, and miso soup. The sashimi, as expected in a seafood community like Steveston, was super fresh. The only bad thing was that the sashimi boat came out so early that it was practically finished by the time my meal finally arrived. After quite a wait, my Wanko & Sashimi ($27.95) finally arrived and included miso soup, assorted tempura, wanko soba, sashimi, and my choice of rice dish. In my set, I picked the Bara Chirashi which is rice topped with chopped up pieces of tuna, salmon, tamago, as well as ikura and cucumbers. Wanko refers to the small bowls of soba noodles in my set and originates from the Iwate Prefecture of Japan. My set included two bowls of cold noodles (one topped by a soft poached egg and the other topped with ikura and grated daikon). Like the sashimi boat that we had earlier, the sashimi in my set was super fresh and included tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and sweet shrimp. Overall, the food was quite good and the seafood was super fresh. Service was a bit slow but I'm assuming that's because they were so busy. Also, the restroom was a bit of a mess. But if you're just coming here for the food and you're looking for something other than your typical sushi restaurant, Ichiro is a good pick with lots of set menu options to choose from. read more

I have been coming here over the years while passing through, I cannot resist. Great staff and owners. I think that the prices are very fair and you will have a large variety of choices to eat. Our party of three decided to visit this restaurant for lunch as we wanted to try the local seafood in the form of Japanese cuisine. I decided to get the two donburi set as I was craving some negitoro. The donburi set was nice. I enjoyed trying out the salmon, tuna, and shrimp but I felt that maybe two donburi is too much for one person to finish (couldn't finish rice). Perhaps I should have gotten the sashimi set instead. I tried a chu-toro sashimi piece that someone else ordered and I loved how soft it was. The melt-in-your-mouth feeling was worth the try! Lastly, we got the spot prawn because my friend told us all the tourists come to Steveston for it. The sashimi part I didn't enjoy that much (I don't like eating raw shrimp either) as a personal preference. But the server told us that when we were done, we could call her over so she could deep fry the head. This was the highlight of my whole meal. You can eat all of it! Came here to check out their lunch menu. Parking isn't the most ample, but if you drive around a bit there is street parking. The interior looks quite modern, with a bright interior. It was quiet as well, which is nice for conversation. There are lunch set combos with sushi and tempura and soup, but these are much pricier than the competition, at $10-20. We decided to go for rolls instead. Gomaee salad - just the right amount of sauce. Sesame seeds sprinkled up top gives it a nice roasted flavour. Salmon sashimi - decent-sized pieces. Looks like they use the wild type of salmon. Nice strong wasabi. Chopped scallop roll - dab of mayonnaise on top. No fishy taste, which is always a good thing. BC Roll - served with a bit of teriyaki sauce on top. The skin had quite a bit of meat still attached, which was nice. Soft shelled crab roll - nice and crispy but not crunchy. Poor little guys. One neat little thing here is that they use in-house soy sauce. Guess there must be some miniature soy sauce factory in the back. It tasted pretty good. You do have to pay a few bucks more to enjoy the food here, but it's a nice treat for sure. read more

They're authentic Japanese owned and managed, in Steveston Village. Their prices have increased quite a lot over the years. The quality is still very good but definitely not as good as before. Highly recommend you to make reservation if you're planning to go on the weekends, even for lunch. The lunch sets are around $20. My favourite go tos are the chirashi with a noodle choice (udon or soba), katsu don with noodle choice, and the 2 small bowls set. They have 4-5 personally marked spots behind the restaurant. We invited 2 friends to join us for a Feb. 8, 2023 lunch at Ichiro. At first there was a delay in taking our orders. My wife and our friends received their lunch order in a reasonable time. My food was delayed for quite a long time, so we asked what the problem was. My food eventually arrived, cold and inedible. It was returned for a replacement lunch. We were basically ignored by staff for most of our visit to this restaurant. When we asked for our Checks, there was no adjustment for the slow service that we experienced. I submitted my concerns in writing to this restaurant 10 days ago; no response was received. In future, why would I want to return to Ichiro restaurant, or recommend it to friends, or order take-out food? Not likely! read more

Richmond is generally known for Chinese food, but this is some of the best Japanese food I've had at such an excellent value. I'm from SF where good Japanese food is normally 30-40 bucks, so this place is a godsend. Service was great with very considerate and accommodating staff (I'm allergic to shrimp and they were more than willing to swap it out for some great mussel). I have no plan to eat here and just happen to drive by and was attracted to its outlook. When we entered, I like it already... Later I found that Ichiro and Moncton are with the same owner/group. I would agree with Mandy W this place is the best Japanese restaurant among the ones I've tried in Richmond. Their set up is meant to be upscale and so is the price, it is about 40 percent more than average but is well worth it after the try out and by looking at the menu, there are lots of unique choices and they all taste so good! Let's say even as simple as a miso soup, price is $2.50 (at least a dollar more than regular) but it is the tastiest I've ever had! Also the presentation of the dishes really got my two thumbs up. After waiting for over 5 minutes and basically being ignored, I approached one of the waitresses and asked why it is taking so long. They also have daily & chef special. The prices are cheap with quality of food. In addition, the waitress was very attentive. Sockeye salmon sashimi - it's ok, pretty standard Hamachi sashimi - it's ok, the slice quite thin. Tako sashimi - Pretty fresh and tasty, also the slice very thin. I used to love coming here. When it first opened, we went a few times and found that the quality and value was very good for Japanese food. It was more on the expensive side, but a lot closer for us than Seto and just as authentic and high quality. Their salmon sashimi is Sockeye and very delicious. Note that it is very popular and busy and reservations are highly recommended otherwise you may not be seated until 8:30 pm. However, in my most recent visit early April 2014, we were very disappointed. The dishes were smaller but still the same high price. For a smaller dinner meal for 3 people, the bill was still very pricey. I guess it is because we ordered sashimi. Salmon sashimi: six very thin slices for $8.25. Good, but small. Toro sashimi: six very thin slices for $13. Fatty tuna is the best. Very delicious, but small again. Queen Roll: Came with a hair the first time. We sent it back. It has amazing uni and giant roe eggs on it. So tasty, but a steep $19.95. The pieces were very tiny. They used to be a lot bigger. We also got some chicken on rice thing but I don't remember exactly so I won't comment on it. Service is okay. The hostess was quite slow. She is in charge of multiple things and probably had some trouble organizing her time. She takes orders, reservations, greets guests, leads guests to their table, and is in charge of the take-out payments, etc. She decided to take 2 calls and do a take-out payment before seating us at our table that was already set up. Anyway, I won't be coming back. We will probably go to Mega Sushi nearby instead for better value and just as high quality. The shrinking portions and the rising prices combined with the satisfactory service is really off-putting. We just celebrated a birthday at this location about an hour ago, and instead of enjoying our dinner, there was frustration because a preordered delux Uni don came one hour late. That's half an hour later than what we had ordered for our kids. The food was ok and sushi was fresh, but not worth the 180 dollars we paid for 2 adults and 2 kids. For sure they did have a full house, but we saw guests on the other tables come and go, and the two adults at our table still didn't have food. Even the kids went hungry for a good 30 min before getting any sushi. Meanwhile the takeout bags were being prepared and handed to the front door multiple times. I had informed the poor waitress that handed us the check that while we appreciated how polite the servers were, the wait was not acceptable at all. The one star is half for the polite servers and half for the at least fresh food. We will not come here again, and to be honest this is one of the worst dining experience I've had at a restaurant in the past 10 years. When the place changed ownership, the high priced items just didn't seem to attract us anymore. This was our grandmothers favourite place to eat. Everyone who worked there knew her. She ate there everyday from when the place opened for business till a few years ago. She's gone now. Her last bite was sushi and she had a smile on her face. She was probably thinking of her wonderful meals at Ichiro. As a result of her loving this establishment we used to go quite often as well. However the last number of times we went in 2016 and 2017 just didn't feel right. A few times it was busy and we didn't bother to enter. While other times we did dine there, the food was ok. The heavy prices kept heaving in the back of our minds when there were other places now that served as good as or better food in the area. Yes, competition has come to this community and we just couldn't afford to eat there anymore with them catering to the nouveau riche clientele. If the food matched the prices, we'd understand, but it didn't. The heyday of the original ownership has come and gone like our grandmother who so dearly liked eating there. Maybe if we come back to try it again, things will have improved, but the past two years and numerous tries hasn't fared that well. The menu is large albeit a little pricey --I reccomend ordering from the lunch menu, which has some great combo deals. My specific recommendations here include: *Any bowl of udon! The worst experience at Ichiro 一朗亭today. We have been a long time and loyal customer for 14 years and we used to eat at the restaurant at least once or twice per month and sometimes once per week. And during Covid times, when their price start to raise by a steep percentage, we didn't eat out but we still have been regularly ordering take out from them and always tipping even though it was just a take out. Yesterday was the first time that we decide to go back to dine in. But after this incident, we will never ever go back to this restaurant again despite the fact that their quality of food is very good and service USED to be excellent. Incident as follow, we called earlier in the day trying to make a reservation but no one picked up, which was reasonable because we called during their off hours. So we stopped by at the restaurant at 5:25 pm trying to make a reservation for 6:30 pm so that my guests from hk could have a quick dinner before heading to the airport boarding a plane to Australia. But we couldn't find parking nearby, so I sent my mom into the restaurant to make the reservation. A few minutes later she came back and said the 6:30 pm reservation was made but we only have 1 hour to eat because the hostess said they have another group coming at 7:30 pm. We went to the restaurant at 6:30 pm and only found out that our table was given away because they have jot down our reservations as 6:00 pm and also with a wrong phone number. It was wrong by 1 number. They said they have tried to call us but no one answered, so they just gave away the table. So I asked for the lady who took my mom's reservation to come and see how we can resolve this. The hostess (a young lady with gold dyed hair, sparkle nail polish. she is not one of the waitresses who we have always seen working there) insisted that she heard 6:00 and said that she will never give us a confirmed reservation of it was just 1 hour and also didn't mention anything at all about jotting down the wrong number. She asked what was the correct number and quickly correct it on her reservation booklet. My mom wasn't wearing a mask at all when she was inside making the reservation, so I do not get how she could have the reservation time and also the phone number wrong. So I told her if she has got our phone number correct, she would be able to reach us when no one showed up at 6:00 and we live just 2 min away, we could have just came over quickly and etc. she just ignored my comment and just kept on non stop repeating herself with poor attitude that she would never give out a reservation if it was 1 hour. But she was the one who told my mom that if we eat fast enough and leave by 7:30, we could have a table at 6:30 pm. We would have just left if she apologized. I told her anyhow about the time, and her jotting down a wrong contact number, we deserve an apology. She just ignored my request. So I got mad and asked her for her name (usually waitresses at Ichiro has a name tag but she just doesn't have one) so that I can talk to her manager another day. She refused to give her name due to privacy reasons, which ok, I understand. But she was giving us a very bad attitude. We were in a rush to find a place to eat elsewhere so we left the restaurant. I don't get how can someone treat their customer like this. They made a mistake and just blame it on their customer, a long time loyal customer. read more
