I felt that my dog Roxie has always received care from Idaho Humane Society in Boise that has been a excellent experience. The vets Roxie has seen there were caring, gentle, compassionate, concerned and genuinely interested in my dogs health. Educated, experienced and qualified to provide exceptional care for my animal. They have given financial assistance to me for my dog in the past more than one time. I've been ever so grateful for! Idaho Humane Society staff is courteous, they communicate between staff great. Professional opinions on one occasion that the mass removed from my dog ( a different dog) was not cancerous and recommended it wasn't necessary to send of for further research to find out if the mass was cancerous. She was accurate! Sadly this particular vet that provided care for the mass left the Idaho Humane Society. I believe she relocated. All my experiences with IHS have been good except one time about 13 years ago. My dog at that time was very sick, the vet treated me like I was abusing my dog. My dog was terminal, I didn't realize how sick my dog was. I got him from a rescue and I believe when I got him he was already very ill. Which I later discovered after the exam at IHS. The vet recommended to euthinize. I was in shock. The vet refused to let me leave with my dog and said the dog had to go into the hospital or be immediately euthinized. I couldn't afford the hospital care and the dog was obviously at the end of it's life. I wanted to spend until the next morning with my dog before I had him put down. The vet treated me terrible and basically tried to keep us hostage at The IHS. When the vet left the exam room for a few minutes, I immediately left out a side door with my dog and went home. Later animal control showed up at my door wanting to view my dog and take possession of my animal because of that vet! I had beat them to the punch and already contacted Kuna Pet Care Clinic for an appointment to have the dog euthinized the next morning. Once I informed animal control officer that no she wasn't going to take the dog and that I had made arrangements, the officer verified it with Kuna Vet Pet Care Clinic. And then IHS vet and animal control officer couldn't take action any further. Kuna Vet Care Clinic was extremely compassionate and helpful with the services to end the dogs life. It was a horrible experience with IHS. But this was many years ago and I'm sure that vet is no longer with IHS. Also I believe a vet like that one was a very rare vet in terms of vets aren't typically lacking compassion, treating animal owners like they are animal abusers. Vets usually aren't demanding and controlling either. I think it was a isolated experience. I don't believe IHS would ever have another vet similar to that one. I definitely highly recommend IHS. More than I would other vets and vet hospitals such as West Vet. They have horrible reviews. read more

Let me provide some background information as to why I highly don't recommend this place, first of they said they can't help my dying cat that was in critical condition, secondly there was a incredible odor, thirdly the staff member at the front desk was very rough with my cat, once we heard they can't help we left me not knowing that those would be the last moments with my cat... Today I saw a bonded pair of dogs who had lived their whole lives together. I was going to go in and get both, tomorrow. I checked the website and saw one was adopted and one left behind! Do you not realize how traumatic this will be for these dogs, especially the one that was not adopted? Is it all about money and adoption numbers or what is in the best interest of the animals? RE: Dog Training I called the Idaho Humane Society training department two years ago needing help with my 1 1/2 year old dog, Saddie. Saddie is a very loving dog but after we had her for six months, became reactive towards strangers, especially Men, and other dogs on leash. It had gotten to the point that we could not have people over or take her for a walk. I began working with Vanessa Grenier on Saddie's training and it has proven to be very effective. Vanessa is wonderful with Saddie. Saddie now welcomes people, including Men, into our home, goes on walks/hikes, goes to the park, rides in the car etc with no reaction or a minimal reaction. Vanessa has given us the tools to work with Saddie to help her thru stressful situations. In addition to helping Saddie, Vanessa has helped me understand Saddie's behavior better in order to be able to handle situations as they arise. I want to give a big shout out and Thank You to the IDHS and Vanessa Grenier for helping us get Saddie back to the dog we were hoping for when we adopted her. read more

I have never felt so ignored in my life. I stood right in front of a male at a desk. Not more than a couple feet away. He did not acknowledge my presence, my existence. I said hello. He totally ignored me. They're were several people working behind the same area. Not one of them acknowledge me. I sat down and waited and watched. I waited and waited and waited. Finally I just walked out. How rude. Do they not realize without people coming in to the Idaho humane society they would not have a job!!! Oh lordy I was taught you always greeted customers with a smile. You ask if you can help them. If you can't help them you find someone who can. You treat people with respect. ‼Reposting because my first review was deleted and I hope people won't make the same mistake and bring your pets here ‼ On Monday, September 12th 2022, Kitrina my diabetic cat was scheduled for a comprehensive exam to include (CBC/CHEM) in order for her to renew her insulin prescription. About an hour before her exam, Michael Brownlee DVM called to inform that Kitrina would need a glucose curve in order to have her insulin prescription renewed (a glucose curve was something I was aware of and had been previously told it was doable at home with a glucose meter.) I let him know that I was aware of the glucose curve and this was supposed to be for the exam and blood work alone. I had to tell him twice more that I did not want to add on any other tests to my cat's exam and he got agitated with me. At 1:58pm a front desk representative called to confirm the additional tests after I had already declined with Dr. Brownlee. I was shocked that he had either kept the tests on her exam or added them again after I said no. I again declined with the front desk. Both Dr. Brownlee and Dr. Mori have tried to make me feel like I was a bad pet owner by not doing these additional expensive tests. Dr. Mori just last year fought me on switching from Vetsulin to Glargine Lantus even though it wasn't working. She was relentless on urinary testing and vet prescribed food. She made comments about how good pet owners opt for extensive urinary testing. Dr. Brownlee is no different, he has scoffed and pushed me about these tests that are NOT required but so highly recommended that they feel the need to bully me into them. After the exam Dr. Brownlee decided to withhold our diabetic cat's prescription for insulin without seeing her glucose curve results. He said based on her (CBC/CHEM) results that were taken 7 hours post insulin injection, he wants to discontinue her insulin immediately. Dr Brownlee gave no instruction on what to do when her blood levels shot right back up, which in my experience was very likely. I asked for a lower dose before cutting out insulin completely and he became defensive and short stating he would not prescribe insulin unless I attempted to change her diet to vet prescribed food. When I asked why it was better then what she is eating now he couldn't tell me. This is a contradiction to what Dr. Mike Koob has said when he first diagnosed Kitrina, he was an advocate for me to do my own research on what would be best for Kitrina and we ultimately decided on Fancy Feast Pâtés. I reached out to the office to request a different doctor and to speak to someone about the incident and was contacted by Matt Woller, a representative of Idaho Humane Society who told me this matter was a difference of opinion based off of other veterinarians agreeing with Dr. Browlee. Veterinarians who haven't even seen Kitrina. I didn't realize withholding an insulin prescription from a diabetic patient without a fructosamine test or glucose curve was a difference of opinion. Dr. Browlee also stated he believed Kitrina was in remission, I don't understand how he came to that conclusion when by Tuesday night (the day after her visit on the 13th) her glucose was over 600. I brought Kitrina in Saturday morning September 17th, 2022 at 10:20am, the Idaho Humane Society refused to see her and test her glucose at all. Dr. Brownlee recommended she go off insulin and when she wasn't doing well, he refused to take accountability for his actions. At the front desk, Jessica Weddle gave a list of other vets and mentioned to go to another clinic as soon as possible to prevent ketoacidosis. A life threatening result of a diabetic not receiving insulin. The Idaho Humane Society did nothing but waste our time and endanger the health of my cat. At 11am on Saturday the 17th, 2022, I went straight to Boise Animal Health Clinic in order to get another exam done and for them to confirm what we already knew. Kitrina is still diabetic. Go anywhere else but here, thank you to Dr. Marshall at Boise Animal Health for helping and prescribing insulin immediately! read more

Re: Canine Dental Services. Their surgical department has declined so much that it's sad. First, they intentionally do not answer their phone (I called 8 times over the last 2 days) they want you to leave a message so they can call you back. I texted them too as suggested on their website. I think they don't want to help the community in this way so they overprice services so you go elsewhere. (In fact the not-kind lady on the phone this morning, when I asked a simple appointment question because I didn't know-her immediate answer was defensive and she told me I could seek services elsewhere!) FYI, to get dental services, you have to go in for a quick estimate appointment, reasonable. What is crazy is you have to PAY $65! for that estimate. You get NOTHING else at the $65 appointment (and no blood draw). That's the cost for the vet there to LOOK at the dog's teeth to let you know if the dental cleaning cost will be anywhere from $400-$1,200. So you PAY for them to further charge you (and I asked, fee does NOT apply to final cost if you decide to use them after the estimate). I decided I did not want to be taken advantage of in that way so I am choosing to go elsewhere even though I'd much rather support the IHS. read more

We have been here a number of times and mostly it has been good experiences. They offer low cost vet services and overall its been a decent experience. It took 15 min to make an appt to get our cat spayed and I kept trying o find out the price but the guy wouldn't tell me. He just kept saying that it depended on how much protection I wanted for my pet when I asked about vaccines. It was really annoying and like going teeth. Thankfully, the actual service I've received has been really good and check in that morning was seem less. A little over a year ago my special needs son was walking his support animal, a 15 pound chiweenie. An unsupervised 8 year old child falsely claimed that my sons dog bit the child. Without any proof other than a grainy picture from the mother who wasn't present and witnesses who stated that the dog did not bite the child, IHS took my sons dog and refused to allow us to quarantine at our home claiming that they NEVER allow quarantining at an apartment. Fast forward to today. A neighbors PIT BULL bit a 2 year old bad enough to require an ER visit. Again IHS was contacted but this time we're able to actually see the child and the significant wound. The pit Bull has been allowed to quarantine at the apartment and has not been removed from the home. The only difference between the size and strength of the dogs and the question of whether our dog actually did bite a child or not is they pit Bull has a white owner and my son age his father (who was the only one home when IHS came to our home) are black. I'm not one to pull the race card but I will call a spade a spade and it's VERY clear that IHS discriminated against us. When I say the snowball effect this had on our family is unbelievable, it truly is. IHS along with animal control absolutely discriminated against us and while it's taken me a year to prove it, their actions finally have. ** regardless of what day it exactly occurred, the fact still remains that they were allowed to quarantine their pit Bull at home, in their apartment, at the same apartment complex we were not allowed to do the same. I was told by Shanna very clearly that a service dog would not bite as they are trained not to and if they did, the consequences would be the same. I'd be happy to post my paperwork from the IHS. You can keep excuses coming but this was racial from the beginning and this simply proves it. It was an OPEN WOUND serious enough to require emergency care and the officer saw the child. In our situation, the officer never saw the actual alleged bite, the family never sought medical care, and there was at the time doubt based on witnesses accounts that our dog did bite the unsupervised child. Furthermore, I initially stated that our dog was a service dog. I was not asked for paperwork nor asked for what disability, I was in fact laughed at and told "service animals don't bite". This family does not have a registered service animal either so I know they did not show proof. They simply said it and your animal control officer accepted it. And if my living arrangements didn't allow for quarantine than neither do the pit bulls since we are both in an apartment in the same complex. read more

My cat Loki had a laceration and went to west vet emergency on 08/08/19, they put a tie over bandage on her (because it was to big to stitch) and told me to get it replaced on 08/09/19. I went to Idaho humane society that day and was put in an exam room almost immediately. I told the doctor about what they said and so He took loki into the back. He came back 2-4 minutes later, I said "Wow that was quick, are you done?" He said yes and asked if I wanted to see. He then showed me my cats unbandaged deep laceration. He said that they could stitch it up and it would be completely fine. He then went back again to get price estimates, leaving me alone with my hyperactive cat who has a deep bleeding open wound for about 10-15 minutes give or take. He came back and told me that they wanted to spay her at the same time. I didn't want her to have to go through anastasia again, so I said yes. I filled out the paper work and left. When I picked her up, none of the paper work said anything about spaying, so I asked about it. The lady at the front desk didn't see anything about it so she went to the back and asked. Apparently, they cut her open to spay her and she was already spayed. I fi Ogured that they wouldn't have offered to spay her unless they knew that she was intact. They had no intention of telling me any of this and I assume were just hoping I would not ask about it. Anyway, when I got home, I looked at her wound to make sure everything was okay. The skin was pulled so tight it folded over and when she walked her leg skin was being pulled towards the sutures. The drain placement looked wrong and everything about it seemed horrible. So, I took her to west vet emergency and she is currently waiting for surgery to open it back up and place a tie over bandage because the wound is still to big to be sutured. Also, they are removing the drain because it is way to high and isn't doing anything for the wound. I don't know what the hell they were thinking, because even I with no medical experience at all could see that it was very wrong. $285 for them to mutilate my cat. Please don't bring your fur babies here. Update: They removed the drain, and cleaned up the wound. They are trying to leave the stitches in to see If it can heal as is, because they don't want to keep opening her up. I have a follow up appointment today. read more

This is a story about a squirrel named Lucky. (We can be best friends if you know what song I am referencing.) In all seriousness, this is a story about a squirrel and how the Idaho Humane Society saved the day. I work at a flower/plant shop that has big garage doors which we open up in the spring/summer months. Last week while these garage doors were open, a squirrel ran in. It looked frantic and confused, so I tried to direct it out of the shop. But instead of running for the massive exit right in front of him, he ran into the back of the shop where he hid away. The next morning, upon entering the shop we found that this little fella decided to tear up many of our succulent planters, ravenously break into our hot coco stash from the holiday season, and leave little presents for us all over the shops (yes, I am referencing poop). Finally after 5 days of this madness and attempting to shoo him our in our own efforts, I picked up my phone and searched "animal control" and gave the experts a call. Within 30 minutes of me calling them, someone arrived to assess the situation. Once we explained what was going on, she said it'd be better and far less chaotic to set a trap than her try to catch him. She came back about an hour later with a cage and peanut butter. She explained to us how to use it and where to release the little guy once we caught him. That night, we set out the trap and the next morning walked into the shop to find that it worked! We released him a few blocks away from the shop, lest he should find his way back to all of our succulents. It was a quick and easy fix that resulted in zero harm to the squirrel - simply catch and release. Animal control swung by later that day and asked how it was going. We told them it worked, gave them back their trap, and thanked them for their help! The best part? They didn't charge us for any of this and they provided great help! Thank you, Idaho Humane Society for saving the day, saving the squirrel, and saving our succulents! read more

I have been to the Idaho Humane Society on more than one occasion now. Our previous boxer, Katie, was adopted from the Idaho Humane Society and she was an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime kind of loyal, smart, and wonderful sort of dog. If Lassie was a boxer, she'd have been Katie. Or as I occasionally called her, Lady Katherine (she always had a bit of a noble air about her). Most recently, I made an appointment with the Idaho Humane Society to have my Irish Setter puppy, Scout, microchipped. As far as microchipping goes, they're one of the most reasonably priced avenues to take in town. It's a mere $44. Not a bad price for a little peace of mind. I made an appointment. We arrived at the appointed time and they took her back to have it done almost immediately. We were in, filled out the paperwork, paid, and out with our newly microchipped girl in less than 20 minutes. The workers were all quite friendly and patient with Scout's puppy shenanigans (pet me! pet me! pleeeeease! No? What if I jump up on you?). I would definitely recommend getting any dog microchipped there. I'd also recommend pet adoption. Who knows? Maybe you'll find an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime loyal, smart, and wonderful friend. The so called manager had no bedside manners, sounded like a teenager on the phone. No managerial experience, and no empathy towards animal owners. I will send letters to all board members of how piss poor this operation is. They should pull money away from it and support other shelters. I want to start this off with a warning. I may be a little over sensitive right now. I had a panic attack a few days before going. So when a sign says pet in kennel I take it as I just have to keep the cat in the kennel. Maybe that is wrong but if it is that sign is not clear. So I was petting Stud and he was trying to get out so I was attempting to close the kennel door. One of the employees states he can only be pet while in the kennel, like I'm trying to take him out. Then as I'm trying to close the door he starts clawing and biting my arm. The employee then raises her voice and states that he obviously doesn't like me touching him. I needed help not to be yelled at. I finally get him off and close the door and I'm hurt but she just gives me a glare. I left and barely made it to my car before I broke down. All I wanted to do was adopt a cat and instead I was attacked by one and yelled at by an employee. I've never had this big of welts or punctures from a cat before. read more

SO...the only "adopting" experience I had was for my mom's dog. I rescue mine through other means...anyway...they charged $300 for the "adoption". Don't get me wrong, I understand why they charge, I get it. BUT $300 really??? AND no home checks. That really bothers me. I bet they could get volunteers to go and do home checks if it is a money thing that prevents them for doing this. So that's only the negative stuff. Now for the good stuff...the veterinarian staff there seems amazing. I took a rescue rabbit in to be fixed and they were great. Many vets aren't real knowledgeable about bunnies, but these guys had all the right answers that tell us rabbit folk that they know what they are doing. So I imagine other pets are in good hands as well. The price was right, and although extremely busy, the staff were all happy and welcoming and no one was pissy or short. You get what you pay for. I will start off by saying I am grateful to have a place that is willing to take in animals and connect them with potential homes, however, the customer service/ professionalism of the establishment is greatly lacking. I took in my two 6 month old female rabbits. They were litter mates and had gotten a long perfectly. A few days before I made my appointment to get them spayed at the Idaho Human Society, they started showing aggression to me. I made the appointment to get them spayed because after researching, I discovered that this can help with behavior. Between the time I noticed that they were showing me aggression and the day of my appointment, they had bitten each other a couple times, nothing deep, but certainly nicks. When I brought my rabbits in, the staff brought them back to the examination room. She came back out and said "The vet wants to talk to you about rabbit care". I was happy to hear what the vet had to inform us about. The vet was very rude, accusational, and condescending towards us. She acted as if we were abusive to our rabbits. We were so upset when we left that I almost wanted to take them with me and take them to a kinder vet that realizes that we LOVE our rabbits, the issue had just started, and we were there to fix the problem. Nevertheless, we got a great deal on getting our rabbits spayed. Months down the road they get along perfectly. No aggression towards me or each other. :) read more

Love at first sight is a rarity some say, others may claim it is non existent. When I saw Katie come in I experienced love at first sight. She is a mini red dachshund who had literally tears coming down her face. They were tears of abandonment, tears of hopelessness. I took her into my arms and I knew that she was coming home with me that night. Love at first sight exists at the Idaho Humane society. With the knowledgeable staff and kind employees, this facility is a wonderful place to fall in love. Here is a wonderful volunteer program and anyone can walk in and just play with a dog or pet a cat if their having a bad day. If someone walks through the doors unable to feed their pet they walk out with a bag of dog food. People walk in alone and come out with a new best friend! They also have this awesome program where they take feral cats, fix and vaccinate them, and instead of putting them to sleep they adopt them put to our amazing Idaho farmers and dairy men as mousers and barn cats! Come to the Idaho Humane Society! Come and see some dogs and cats! Go check out the birds and bunnies! Come in and be prepared to fall in love, be prepared to feel love at first sight. read more

I will start this off by saying that I love the Adoption side of the Idaho Humane Society. They are wonderful and both of my sweet pups were adopted there, and I will always adopt from there. However, the Veterinary side of things was incredibly unpleasant and disappointing. The staff was rude and very short with us. The "sick pet (diarrhea, vomiting, coughing" waiting area is just feet from the healthy pet waiting area so that's a concern as well. My dog had to get stitches and was bleeding profusely out of her leg. They determined she needed stitches but let us wait 3 hours for the doctor to see us and tell us she had to wait 16 hours for surgery. She threw a crappy bandage on my dog without cleaning the wound and sent us on our way (but not after letting us pay some hidden fees). We ended up going to All Valley Pet Clinic the same day instead and got MUCH better treatment at very comparable rates. The bandage the humane society put on my dog ended up binding to her wound and tore the laceration even more upon removal. I would always recommend adopting from them, but for pet care, please go elsewhere (I recommend All Valley). read more

My husky was missing for a few days and someone brought him in to the facility with his training collar on. He is also chipped, which they said they couldn't find, so he was there all weekend. However, When I picked him up, I insisted he was chipped... long story short, yes he is chipped. They apologized, however he was also missing his collar. The lady at the front desk was honestly snappy and sassy to me and my fiancé. The communication skills are terrible and disrespectful. I do not recommend going. Find an actual vet. SHAME ON YOU!! We adopted a male Chihuahua from your location at Petsmart. I asked specifically about his health and was told he didn't have any health issues. I asked for all medical and shot records since the last time I adopted from the Humane Society I wasn't given a complete shot record or medical history. I was shocked to find out when I had to get all the information needed from our previous adoption that she had teeth pulled. I didn't know until almost 9 months after she was adopted. This is why I asked before adopting Finn. I'm told no problems. Finn starts sneezing Monday. Nose running and mucous. We take him to the Humane Society Clinic since I have a free visit within 2 weeks of adoption. I called first thing in the morning and they didn't return my call. I wasn't waiting around. We have other canine family members so we need to make sure Finn is ok. Not only were they completely unprofessional and rude, they made a "mistake" by putting Finn on the floor to be adopted. He has kennel cough and his meds started on the 12th. He needed to take the meds twice a day for 10 days!! We adopted him on the 16th. Let's do the math!! Then we were lied to and told they didn't start his meds and hand us a bottle of meds with a syringe. We get in the truck and the meds were open and the syringe was filthy with left over medicine residue!! We have adopted so many dogs from this facility at their outrageous prices and given them forever homes and we are treated this way?? Not even an apology. We love Finn and he will be loved forever!! Maybe the media should know about this so we don't have another "oops" situation!! read more

About 5 years ago I was looking to get my first dog. I spent a lot of time on the IHS website looking at their dogs, and I also used to go out on the weekends and just walk though the dog pens and see what was there. In this process I got to know Dee, head honcho out there at IHS. She helped me figure out what kind I dog would fit with my lifestyle and such. This was also the time when IHS was starting up their IDAPI program wherein select dogs are taken and obedience trained by prisoners at the Idaho State Penitentiary. Dee matched me up with one of the charter grads from the IDAPI program, named Archie. He's a lab shepard mix and has been with me ever since. This is a great organization and, as an aside, they have probably the best website of any animal shelter I've ever looked at. It is easy to search through and see pictures of all their animals. Excellent descriptions come with each potential-pet profile so you know what you're getting and your decision can be based upon more than just a picture. read more

We've tried calling throughout two days, never an answer. We left our number and interest in a dog we knew was still there but never received a call back even though the answering machine says to leave your name and number. We eventually drove the hour and a half from Garden Valley to find out the dog had a hold. That was yesterday and the dog is still listed on the website. Poorly managed and staffed. read more

I would absolutely not recommend the vet side of the Idaho Humane society. The vet is rude, the front staff do not listen to concerns. They are only concerned about money. For being a "low income" vet they absolutely are NOT! The crazy fees they charge are as much if not more than a normal vet AND they like to throw hidden fees into the bill. read more

I give up! I have tried 3 times to adopt animals from this shelter. Animals are posted on the website as available even as I pull into their parking lot only to find out they were adopted one or two days before!!! They say to call first--well, I have done that, no one answers the phone. I leave a message as requested and no one calls back. I'm glad these animals are going home somewhere, but it is infuriating to drive for an hour one way to this out-of-the-way location and get nothing other than "oh, yeah, there is only one person who can update the website postings and she hasn't been in". Seriously? This as 4 of the employees/volunteers stand around gabbing. I have rescued several animals and provided them a healthy and safe home, but I totally give up on this facility. read more

The Idaho Humane Society is such a great organization. Our dog was amazing with kids but quite upset around other dogs. The Reactive Dog Class was the best decision we could have made to help our dog. The trainers helped me know how to respond to my dog in a way that would be effective for him and cared for us both throughout the class. I cannot recommend this class enough! read more

First of all, I'd like to say that the IHS is a great organization and I know they work hard to stay afloat in daily tasks. My review is on their "Lost Pet" protocol. They have a form to fill out on their website if your pet is lost. One would think that they would check those against the animals they have come in and call the owners when discovered they have the pet in their care. Nope, never even checked it.... I had to go there and ADOPT my lost cat to the tune of $85. I filled out that form, submitted pictures, and still not one of them called to let us know they had our missing pet. In all, I'm glad we found him and were able to get him back in our care. read more
