I've lived in east village for 25 years and tried every barber in the hood. Igor is the best of them all. THE BEST!

Do not get your hair cut by the lady (I've only seen 1 female there), she's terrible. I went there last week and she messed up my hair and trapped me in the chair for an hour. Despite that she clearly didn't know what she was doing, I was stuck and couldn't exactly get up and leave in the middle. Also, watch out towards the 8pm closing time... there was a rush starting 7:30p on the Weds that i went. Igor even gave people coming in close to 8pm the stink eye, so much that one customer felt compelled to apologize for coming at the last minute. How about just closing a bit earlier so they can provide a friendly welcome to all of their customers? I've been there once before and Tim (?) was friendly and did a great job. I will go back once more to see if they can redeem themselves... obviously I won't subject myself to that lady again though. Will update this review if they redeem themselves. read more

I searched the web for what's expected to be a good haircut in manhattan and Igor's clean cuts turned up as an option. Reasonable price and right in my backyard. I've never ever ever had such a poor experience in my life. I always ask for the same thing everywhere i go - "keep it neat and take about half off." Unfortunately, this confused the woman who was allowed to cut hair there. She thought that to mean that she should shear 80% of my top hairs right off the bat and started picking around the bottom hemisphere of my head. She asked whether that looked good. I was shocked. I politely pointed out by grabbing the hairs by their ends, that the bottom was longer than the top. "Ah, I see," she replied. Then she picked around some more. Asked again. I knew I was in for an awful haircut, so I again pointed out that I'm not trying to purposely look like I'm balding when I still have a thick head of hair. I pointed to pictures of every man's head surrounding us on the walls and explained that no one has longer bottom hairs than top hairs. That is just absurd. I figured that since Igor was cutting hair next to me, he would intervene, as it's his shop. No. He mumbled something in Russian to her and she then said she would need clippers. Went through the same experience with the clippers another time, because I kept finding patches of long hair. She kept exclaiming that she "followed my instructions exactly." I, of course, am not in the business of arguing with a fool, so I kept my mouth shut. By now 45 minutes have passed and my hair which was 4 inches going in is now a uniform half inch, when we started with my instruction to take off half of it. No problem, right? The kicker is I had a beard. A long one, which I had been growing for over 2 months. I needed it trimmed down. So she starts with the clippers and I quickly figure out she's never done this, which prompts me to think that I have yet to see her license to barber on display. There is no way that she has one. No way. She asks if I want it shaped and I asked if she was done trimming. She said yes, as I expected. So here's what I did: I asked her if I could use the clippers and once she handed them to me, in front of everyone and as though I was in my own bathroom, I shaved my own face as she stood watching. Igor and company all saw this, which is obviously ridiculous on every level. I pointed out to her that I was still cutting hair from my beard after she had declared she was done with it. So after I finished my own trim, I said I was done and in a surreal moment she pulled off my apron, but not before dumping all the hair all over my ankle, socks and in my sneakers. If she did it on purpose, she sucks, and if she did it by accident, she sucks. Either way, this woman appeared to be someone related to Igor, as I don't know Russian, but I can recognize him calling her "babushka." I have little doubt that she is a lazy family member who needed to find a vocation, because she has no marketable skills and realized that she is disqualified from the sugardaddy route, due to her appearance (which is why I say family member, because Igor can't possibly have relations with this person). I was 100% certain, as this played out in front of the owner, Igor, that he would comp me. Not so. They actually charged me for the beard trim. In short, I said that I didn't think this was fair and she said that I was not clear about what I wanted. Clearly she got no tip. As much as I wanted to explain that one does not need to point out that the top of one's head should not be shorter than the bottom, unless you live in West Virginia, I knew that her next question would be "Where is West Virginia?" I came home and meticulously trimmed my own hair, because the front hairs were lopsided, as were my temples. Crazy... I hope any reader will recognize that I am not an uneducated fool and that my standards for a haircut are very low, as all I want to be is presentable when I leave the barber. I literally joined Yelp a moment ago to review this hole, because I don't think that quality or customer service is of any concern at this place. Igor may be a fantastic barber, but in leiu of getting him to cut my hair, as this is his establishment, the responsibility of recognizing that one of his barbers is absolutely incompetent rests on his shoulders. If he acknowledged the mistake, I'm back at his shop in a month and sitting in HIS chair not her's, but I'd still be a satisfied customer. read more

i don't like throwing around 5's is the only reason why this place got a 4. if i could, i'd put it at a 4.5 After i saw some bad yelp reviews i made sure to avoid any lady, I got Tim and he's the friggin man. Good convo, done quickly, it was just exactly what i wanted. recommended some good product for the hair and i was out the door in probably 20 minutes from when i walked in (no wait at 5 on a wednesday) and it's 14 plus i tipped him 6. yeah i'm telling you it was good. i've got a weird upside down pear shaped head, just trust me, it's weird.... and gigantic but that's another story. However regardless of that fact he made it look picture perfect (pretty literally as i pointed to a picture on the wall and he did it). to sum it all up. 20 bucks for a good cut, i know my new barber in NYC. read more

Found this place on Yelp as i recently moved into the East Village. Out of all the affordable places to go, I chose this one based off it's reviews. Glad I did. Have been going to Igor for nearly ten years. Consistent, quality, cheap and convenient. Igor is a super nice guy and worth waiting for.

I moved to NYC over 4 months ago and managed to put off getting a haircut because I wanted to find the perfect barber shop. OK, I was just too lazy to get it cut, but once again, Yelp came through and I did find that perfect barber shop. There was none of that crap about me sitting down and the barber asking how I want it, and me fumbling over words trying to sound like I know anything about hair styling. At Igor's, I sat down, he asked how I wanted it, I said "shorter on the top, and shorter but not too short on the sides", perfectly clear and specific instructions. There was no "How much shorter?" or "What number clippers?"... seeing as I get my haircut 4 or 5 times a year, I can't say the number of clippers to use on the sides is something I remember. He just took his fingers to my hair and said "This short?" which made a lot more sense than the barber's who say "Are we talking an inch, inch-and-a-half, two?"..."Sorry sir, can't say I've ever taken a ruler to my hair." He worked his magic from there in complete silence, with some classic 80s/90s rock playing. That's pretty much how a normal lazy Saturday afternoon would be for me - sitting in a chair, listening to good music, maybe reading a magazine - just there was a guy cutting my hair. I didn't feel pressured to pretend I lived a life that warrants me describing it to a complete stranger or to say "Cold out there today, huh?". I was in and out in under 30 minutes on a Saturday afternoon which was amazing considering I had to wait for two other people when I came in. The hot neck shave is an amenity that actually makes sense at a barber shop. And as an added bonus, the hair cut looks great (if I do say so myself). Igor's is exactly what I was looking for in a barber shop. ...and of course, you can't beat $14 for a haircut here. read more

I'm not sure which barber I saw -- he had the chair to the *right* of Igor's -- but he asked questions and took me at my word that I wanted a very short haircut. He really went at my scalp with the electric clippers and for a while I wondered if he even had scissors, until he did the top. At the end, the haircut looked pretty good to me and I've gotten a lot of compliments on it. So I'll go to Igor's again. read more

I was distraught when Igor left Neighborhood Barber - I had finally found someone who could make my rapidly balding dome look decent. Fortunately, he turned up even closer to home at his own place! Igor has never let me down - always a great cut at a ridiculously low price and good conversation (he is a really interesting guy.) I continue to get balder and Igor continues to make it look good. Igor gives a great haircut at an extremely reasonable price ($16). This place is nothing fancy and you should only go here for a regular haircut. Don't think you're going to have your hair styled by Igor or the other barbers. This is an old fashioned machine up the sides and back, razor on the neck kind of place. If that's what you're looking for, Clean Cuts is your kind of place. read more

This is the best place for an easy haircut in the city, hands down. I've gone to many barber shops which have resulted in my hair being completely botched, and Igor gets it right every time. I found Igor's from their #1 ranking on a "Best Barber Shops in NYC" list, and the list was 100% accurate. I've sent many of my friends there and they all love it as well. Igor and his staff are friendly and easy to talk to which adds to the quick and easy haircut experience. While I live only a few blocks away, when I move out of the area, I will still be making my way back here to get a haircut. $15 + tip = value. read more

I've been coming to this barber shop for about a year and a half. I started seeing one guy, who did an okay job but I've had better. My third visit I saw a different guy, Steve, and he was pretty good but after a few months he didn't work there anymore so I went to Richie. Richie is a nice guy, pretty good cut but you need to direct him a LOT and his fades need a bit more practice, not always even. (Which is why I deducted one star). I would always see about 5 guys waiting to see Igor at a time every time I would come in so I never bothered to wait and try him out but finally after a few rough cuts with Richie I decided to wait and try Igor and MAN IT WAS WORTH IT! Within 15 minutes he shaped and faded my cut into exactly what I wanted! Now every time I come in, I wait about 20-30 minutes in line to see Igor because he IS worth the wait! I would definitely recommend him! But maybe suggest he train his guys a bit more on his techniques because they are definitely not at his level of expertise! read more

Once upon a late Sunday morning I strolled up in this barber shop. I was in NEED of a haircut and had had brunch in the area. Clean Cutz it is. A side note: I was born 2 blocks away, worked across the street for 5 years and frequented a bar across the street as well for 7 years and have never been here. I know many people in the area who go here and I decided on a first time try. I was not disappointed at all. I was seen immediately and although I was going to pay in cash, I saw that you were able to pay with card. A plus, right?! Amongst a sea of men magazines, there's Playboy. A plus plus, right? A barber who is eager to get to know you and mild-mannered. Just about a plus in my book. I chose Clean Cutz bc my spot is usually so packed and have not been keeping their hours. These guys don't seem like that. In fact, they have been around for decades which means they are not like that. Which just means I will be back! read more

Avoid Manny. He left spots that were too long. One side burn was noticeably longer than the other. By about 1/2 inch! It's kind of amazing. And dropped his comb while giving the hair cut. I've never had a barber drop his comb. Aren't they suppose to be good with their hands? Be warned. Stay away from his chair. I've gotten one good hair cut here the person who use to work there no longer is there. I'm never going back as long as Manny's there. It's too bad. read more

I got my hair cut yesterday by Manny, and I've had my hair cut by Igor in the past. I've never had a bad experience with either one, but I suppose the quality of the haircut depends on who you get. If possible call in to make an appointment with either Igor or Manny. This is also an absolute steal at $15 (slight uptick from the $14 it used to be). read more

In terms of getting a consistent haircut, Igor is the man. He remembers how I liked my hair cut every time and it comes out how I like it every time. I had gone to salons beforehand, however I had decided that I was overpaying. He's increased his price somewhat (I typically pay 20 each time) but I think it's a pretty solid cut for that price. read more

as stated before, you have to tell him exactly how you want it. although i didn't walk out with my "usual" hair cut i get back home, i liked the change, a different look from what i normally get. igor is very friendly and so is his staff. the shop is a quaint local spot that feels comfortable. he is easy to talk to, listens, and always asks you what you want to make sure. his cutting technique is different from what i've seen others have done. he is very "freehand" he does not physically segment the hair. at first i was worried, but he seemed to be extremely easy and comfortable - he knows what he's doing. $14 is really cheap, and its a fixed price. on the way to the shop i saw others with "$14 & up"....this is new york...not LA....i need to get used to the fact that everything here is hiked up. i'd go back every time to get my hair cut. i know it is not the chicest spot in town. not the most refined and luxurious f services. but he does what he needs to do and does it exceptionally well... read more

I don't believe in paying more than $20 for a haircut. This means that ever since I moved to the city I've been getting a lot of bad haircuts (especially at Astor Place where they left me looking like Leo DiCaprio in Growing Pains). But Igor's is awesome. They've done it right both times I went, for only $14. Plus it's at the nexus of the universe, which is worth an extra star in itself. read more
