iHalo Krunch, the new hype in downtown Toronto! Came here on a Tuesday at around 530 with foodiejenn and there was only a 5 minutes wait. I guess we were lucky because the typical wait for this place is well over 30 minutes!! We got the Ube Haze and Matcha + Ube on a charcoal cone. The softserve was decent, but the Ube (Purple Yam) was so strong it overpowered the charcoal and the matcha flavour, so I couldn't really taste them. Also, the ice cream melts SOOO fast and the day we went wasn't even that hot!! Just imagine you go on a day that is 30+ degrees, the ice cream won't keep its shape after 3 minutes! Charcoal cone on the other hand was pretty impressive, I loved it compared to the typical yellowish cone we get on our softserve. It had a pretty good texture and it tasted pretty good. Is this place worth the hype? Well if the wait is less than 20 minutes then I would recommend trying, otherwise come back later when the hype dies down. read more

Finally paid iHalo Krunch a visit. Fun soft serve ice cream. The black cones are made in-house. The soft serves are flavourful (but a tad mild) and creamy. I enjoyed the ube and charcoal flavour. Overall, I thought it was pricey for soft serve ice cream. However, I enjoyed iHalo more than I enjoyed Sweet Jesus. read more

Overpriced. Does not taste like real ice cream. They skimp on ingredients and have the audacity to charge $6+tax for fake ice cream. The foundation of real ice cream is whole milk and fatty cream. I trust my taste buds and I could not taste those ingredients. Unbelievable. If you're craving real ice cream, don't bother going to iHalo Krunch. read more

I love iHalo Krunch. This is my 5th time here now and I still crave it often. Love the ube flavor the most and the charcoal coconut. Usually they are quite busy I was surpised there was only 1 person in front of me this time. Will be back for more especially with this summer starting to arrive. read more

First time trying the activated charcoal ice cream and I loved it! Be careful though- it will turn your mouth black for a little while so make sure to have water nearby. The flavor had a hint of coconut. Very good! read more

Randomly lined up here on Saturday about 10 minutes before it opened. Within 5 minutes, the line doubled. Wait time after it opened was 20 minutes but I think it was worth it. A worker came out and gave water bottles to patrons waiting in the line. I got the ube nut and the flavours were so unique. It was not overly sweet and the cone was delicious as well. There is a surprise at the bottom of the cone (spoiler, it's marshmallow!). Service was on point from waiting in line to taking our order (the girl at the cash was super bright and awesome). The guy filling our cone made sure it was packed from the bottom. Great experience, great ice cream. read more

Came here about 1:15pm on a Saturday, 15 mins before opening. Still a big hype around this place so there was an initial line. Not too bad, for sure has gotten better than the pics I've saw from when iHalo first opened. Maybe had a 20 minute wait which I think is ok for a hot place everyone wants to go to. I was very very happy this place was more than just instagram porn. Got the black on black/ube haze twist. The soft serve is very good quality, great flavor, well made. The cone is great too, had an awesome texture/flavor and to keep it from dripping out the bottom they now put a little Fluff in the bottom so that's a great thing to after at the end after the ice cream is gone. As I finished I had to fight back the urge to get in line again to go grab another cone it was that good IMO. Would give 5 stars if there were more offerings for soft serve - matcha is a little 90s at this point I'd like to see iHalo get creative with flavors - also I was a little sad to learn the black soft serve is not colored with charcoal just a ton of black food dye. read more

Overrated gimmick ice cream. As expected, looks great on Instagram, just meh in taste. I tried the ube and black on black twist in the charcoal cone. The cone was sickeningly sweet. The ube tasted more like an artificial taro flavour, while the black was simply coconut. The ice cream combo wasn't bad, but eventually the individual flavors melted as fast as the ice cream did, and it all blended together into a taste not dissimilar to regular sweet cream with the tiniest hint of coconut. And hoo boy, did the ice cream melt quickly. Is it because it's too watery? I've had much better and creamier soft serve at Costco... read more

I honestly just came here for the hype. And because it was a short walking distance away. Didnt really know what to expect but a lot of Yelpers gave it good reviews. My mind was going a million places as to what charcoal ice cream would actually taste like. We got the ube-nut (purple and black twist) it was yummy! Tasted like creamy coconut. I was impressed with the texture, consistency and flavour of the ice cream. It was definitely worth the experience!!! My cone melted quickly on a nice sunny day, so it was really really messy. The charcoal cone was good too, tasted like a regular sugary cone. I didn't finish mine, but my friend did and there was marshmallow fluff at the end of the cone, which I missed out on :( Walking back with the cones in hand, ALOT of people on the streets were asking about it, how it tasted, what it was. OVERALL A COOL EXPERIENCE! Tips: - Grab 15 napkins per cone - Pack a tooth brush - Finish the cone! read more

It took me a while to get my first visit here out of the way, but this also meant that I got to miss out on those massively long line ups. I've had it 3 times since and each time I've loved the treat I walk out of the store with. I usually go for the black and purple swirl, and the first time I reached that marshmallow bottom of the cone, I was caught by surprise and the perfect way to end the treat. Pretty filling too and for a good price pint. If it was a regular soft serve I'd say it's pricey but it's definitely not a typical vanilla soft serve. The staff for being in a very busy location have always been patient and very friendly. Probably what bumps this experience from a 4 star to a star place. And so picturesque too for your instagram! read more

I visited on a Monday night so naturally there was no wait. I ordered the vanilla nut while the date ordered the matcha nut. It was okay. The ice cream was decent. The cone is just a black sugar cone. I thought it was overpriced and mainly for Instagram. I can't really comment on the service since there were no other customers in the store. All in all, I'm glad I visited but am not planning to go again. I would recommend people check it out. But don't expect anything out of the ordinary. Last thing, the ice cream melts rather quickly so you need to prepared to wolf it down. read more

Melts REALLY quickly so you better eat it right away, it's not gonna last the photo shoot. I got the ube and charcoal twist on the charcoal cone. Charcoal is coconut flavoured. I don't have a problem with this because I like coconut. I must have overestimated how much I like coconut because the whole thing just tasted like coconut. It was so overpowering and this wasn't even a yummy coconut flavour. I tried the ube on its own and it didn't taste very good nor was the flavour very strong. So I'm eating this coconut soft serve that's black and purple and having it drip all over me (and not because I took a million pictures. I basically ate it right away). I don't know what in soft serve makes it melt slower but iHalo Krunch definitely has not included this in their recipe or very minimal amounts of it. No thank you. read more

Friendly staffs, tasty and unique ice cream. (They offer flavours like Ube, Charcoal, Matcha for their soft serve) May find it a bit pricey for an ice cream cone. ($6.50) Overall, enjoyed the Ube and Charcoal soft serve (also worth it for the gram ;)) and would like to try their gelato next time. *It's still fairly new so do expect a line up almost always. read more

Came here a while ago for the hype. There was a line, which I don't really mind. I had high expectations since everyone was talking about it but I was pretty disappointed. It tasted like regular ube ice cream and was nothing special except for the aesthetics. I guess I would return to try out other flavours since the price is pretty average for ice cream these days read more

It hurts what I have left of a heart to see iHalo Krunch only have 3 1/2 stars on Yelp, it really does. I made my first ever (and definitely not last) stop at iHalo Krunch on Sunday while passing time in the city before a show. From the outside it looks like an average little shop, and honestly that's also what it looks like when you first walk in. This isn't a flashy ice cream place, but what it does have it does really really well. They have a few different selections of ice cream but I absolutely had to try the black ice cream, which is actually "activated charcoal" if I'm phrasing correctly (which I'm probably not). The ice cream itself is smooth and absolutely delicious, mostly tasting like vanilla (an extremely good vanilla) on top of the ice cream being black, so is the napkin and the cone! On top of a tasty ice cream, a tasty cone, and a cool napkin, there's also fluff at the very bottom of the cone for a little extra treat. I absolutely loved my cone would definitely recommend anyone into sweet treats to come down Queen East and give this place a shot, you won't regret it! read more

Okay so I'm actually done with this activated charcoal trend. iHalo is definitely one of the better activated charcoal ice creams I've had. They flavoured it coconut so you can actually taste a coconutty creamy ice cream. Their prices and quality has definitely gone down with the increased popularity over Instagram and other social media. I like that they add marshmallow fluff to the bottom of the charcoal cone so that your ice cream doesn't drip down your hand. I only gave it 3 stars because of the aftermath into washroom. I didn't really mind the green poo but I definitely had problems with how explosive the poo was. At first I didn't believe that ice cream can cause diarrhea but I believed it when I had the same problem the second time I had the charcoal ice cream from iHalo. I don't know if it's the charcoal or hat cause it but I would highly suggest everyone to GET OVER IT LET'S MOVE ON read more

Great for Instagram, but save yourself the $7 and get a cone at McDonald's; they're the same thing. I got the black on black cone which apparently is supposed to have coconut in it. I couldn't taste any coconut. It was just plain vanilla. The nice touch they add is putting marshmallow at the bottom of the cone, which helps prevent the ice cream from leaking all over you and makes for a delicious last bite. read more

Usually when I pass by on the weekend there is a bit of a line, I went on Friday afternoon and didn't have to wait. I got the Vanilla nut which consists of a ube (purple yam) and charcoal coconut twist on top of vanilla. Flavours blended with each other very well and it was really refreshing. The charcoal cone was pretty good, not really sweet and it was a decent thickness. read more

This is my third time here(there must be a reason that I keep coming back :) Got the vanilla bean base, with ube and charcoal flavour. This never disappoints! The ice cream here is not as creamy as a soft serve, but delicious nevertheless! It's decently sweet, and the flavours are pretty rich. My favorite is the ube - cuz I love Taro. The charcoal cone is also very yummy, like a tasty cookie. At $7 for a large cone, it's a sweet sweet deal. Will definitely come back soon! read more

This was probably the best soft serve I've ever had. I ordered the Ube nut which is ube and charcoal infused coconut. You can't really taste the charcoal (I'm not sure it even has a taste haha) but the ube flavour is super rich (you won't be disappointed) and mixes so well with the charcoal infused coconut flavour. I also love the taste of the cone and the marshmallow fluff waiting for you at the bottom of the cone finishes it off perfectly (it also prevents the cone from getting soggy). It's so good that I order one every time I come across an iHalo Krunch and I don't plan on stopping until my blood is infused with charcoal too. read more

A bit of a line up outside on a Saturday afternoon. Tried the charcoal and ube twist in a cone. The ube flavour was pretty strong and quite delicious. As for the charcoal flavour, not sure if it's cause the ube flavour was so strong we couldn't quite make out what the charcoal is supposed to taste like. The ice cream was also not as smooth as we expected. Overall it was great ice cream for a summer day. read more

This was my first time going to iHalo Krunch and it was ok. Pros: I got the Black on Black ice cream (which is coconut flavored) which was delicious and once inside the shop I got my ice cream pretty fast. Cons: I waited for 40 minutes in line, cost $ 6.50 for one ice cream which is a little pricey for the amount your getting, once the ice cream is in your hands you only have 2 minutes to take your pictures before it starts melting and it stains your teeth. Overall this place is great for tourist or a local who wants to try something new. read more

Your typical instagram hipster millennial dessert spot to be honest, but gotta admit the ice cream wad pretty good! I got the ube nut twist, it melts hella fast but surprisingly the flavour was light. Ice cream usually makes me feel sort of sick but this one didn't do That, it wasn't really "creamy" if that makes sense. But honestly it tasted like a more nutty intense vanilla cone lol. Expensive for what you get, the cone was really yummy but yeah... sort of a gimmick and hopping on "aesthetic food" trends. read more

Wow, this ice cream blew my away! Usually instaworthy aesthetic ice cream shops are overrated, but not iHalo Krunch. I picked the popular charcoal and coconut flavor blend ice cream. The creaminess of ice cream shows they use real quality ingredients to make it. The thick cone was able to hold the tall ice cream swirls the entire time I was eating it! At the bottom of the cone there's a sweet surprise of marshmallow. A little pricey but I don't mind having it once in awhile :) read more

Was staying in the neighbourhood and was shocked to see the long line the first time. So finally, we gave in and joined the line. They actually had a staff to 'direct' the traffic and he was entertaining. That was the best part. It was hot and stuffy once we got inside. Truly feeling sorry for the workers. We got to sample a couple of the flavours, and they tasted pretty well all the same to me - all lacked the rich ice cream flavour I was looking for and was overly sweet for my liking. Conclusion: overpriced and over-hyped. read more

The only reason you would come here is for a photo of the charcoal ice cream and cone. Otherwise, go to bang bang ice cream nearby instead, if you actually want some delicious ice cream. I came on a Sunday afternoon, and the line wasn't very long and moved quickly. Staff are efficient and friendly. There is a limited selection of flavors, namely charcoal, ube, matcha, or vanilla. I got ube nut (which is ube and charcoal swirl), and the whole thing just tasted like vanilla. The cone wasn't that crispy and was probably a bit stale. I wanted to see what the hype was about, but it's clear it's just the presentation that has drawn people to this place. read more

I will start by saying that, in all fairness, I think iHalo Krunch deserves a 3.5, but since yelp only likes whole numbers, I'm giving it a 4, a watered down one at that. It normally opens at 1:30pm on Saturdays, and with that in mind, my crew and I scheduled to meet there at 2pm. At 2pm, there was already a small lineup of about 8 people in front of us, which wasn't too obstructive. However, the workers there then notified everyone that they would have to start operating at 3pm instead. With what seemed like a vaguely thought out plan, they began handing out slips of paper to everyone who lined up, telling them to come back at 3pm, during which they would be put in an express queue. They unfortunately ran out of slips of paper by about the 15th or so person, so they hastily began taking down names with an iPad. Personally, I have a penchant for event-planning, and I had mixed feelings about their back-up plan. Their ideas to use the paper slips and take down names were not bad; they were practical as quick solutions. However, with their extensive 1.5 hr delay laying the pressure onto the employees, what really added salt to the wound was the disorganization of this back-up plan. The employees did not seem united in operating under this new plan, so a few of them appeared confused in front of the lineup of clients. They also made little to no attempts at communicating with clients; there were no ushers going down the line to notify people of the delay and, when they were often asked about the difference between having a slip of paper and their name listed in the iPad, the workers were hard of hearing. You don't necessarily have to have event/project coordination experience to do a well-executed, albeit makeshift, resolution to an immediate problem. Simply being attentive by listening and communicating is what's key. Fortunately, my friends and I arrived early enough to end up at the front of the priority queue when we reconvened at the restaurant. The establishment is quite small, so there is very little space to sit down and enjoy your cone. I would recommend to grab a cone and continue walking to your next destination. I got the charcoal and ube twist on a charcoal cone, and my bf got the ube haze on a charcoal cone. The total cost for both cones came to an exorbitant fee of $13 dollars (roughly $6-7 per cone). As the cones are roughly the size of a small to medium soft-serve that you can get from an ice cream truck, the price to portion ratio is quite unbalanced here. However, flavour-wise, both the charcoal and ube ice cream were delicious and creamy. In case you're curious, the charcoal ice cream is composed of vanilla ice cream that has been mixed with burnt coconut husks, so it's really a "goth" vanilla soft-serve with a subtle coconut undertone. Aesthetically, these cones trump many other desserts that you can find in the GTA, so I definitely find them to be Instagrammable and selfie-worthy! The unfortunate aspect of being so "goth", however, is that the charcoal soft-serve ice cream melts quickly and can stain your hands, lips, teeth, and clothes with ease. It stained my lips to the point that a wipe or two with a napkin didn't help at all. Luckily, my Wet 'n Wild Catsuit Liquid Lipstick really saved me here! Would I recommend iHalo Krunch to others? Yes, for their first visit because the concept and aesthetics are neat. There is an immense charcoal fad after all! However, because of the high prices, small sizes, and crowded space, I would not recommend more visits than that. read more

We went to this ice cream store because everyone walking out had a cool black ice cream cone. Got the ube and coconut/activated charcoal mix for 6$. The ice cream was flavourful but the activated charcoal coconut didn't taste any different than regular coconut. Ice cream was also pricey for a 1 scoop cup. read more

I am quite happy to say that this is not JUST an instagram trend (*cough*Sweet Jesus*cough*). We went on a Saturday afternoon and didn't have to face any lines (could it be because of sub zero temperature? the world may never know). So they serve soft serve ice creams, non-traditional flavours and colour. The Black coconut soft serve doesn't just look neat and picturesque, it tastes pretty good too. The Softserve is creamy and the potion size is huge. I wouldn't go out of my way to have this, but may revisit if i am in the area craving ice cream. read more

I will start by saying that passing by this place one night before it was officially opened, the owners were very generous and invited me and my friends in to sample the ice-cream. They said they were still working on the flavours, so I didn't judge the taste at that point, but their invitation definitely left a good impression on me. Now, I walk past ihalo Krunch everyday on my commute. You can tell when you're getting close, by the black and purple puddles of melted cream on the ground. Most of the days, there are super long lines to try the hyper-Instagrammable icecream. I've been curious to try the flavours to see how they've turned out since my initial tasting, however the long lines were a turn off. I finally stopped in during a cloudy day. Unfortunately, as I had predicted, this place turned out to be more of a gimmick. I had the Ube Nut (half purple Ube, half black coconut flavour). While the taste wasn't bad, it simply tasted like sweet cream, and not the flavours they were supposed to be. For over $6.50+tax for a cone, I expect a good flavour, not just a pretty picture to post to Instagram. Would love to support this local business, however I would recommend they work on their flavours and not rely on the Insta-buzz that they have created ... because that will fade, and what will be left? read more

Such unique flavours! I agree with the hype! I also love the dark coal style waffle. Their marshmallow treat at the end of the cone is quite delicious. My favorite is the Ube nut. Don't know if the ice cream is really good for you but I have been here several times and it's one of my favorite ice cream parlors in Toronto! read more

The company has been in business since 1860 making matcha, hojicha/houjicha and other green teas, and you happen to have this tea and dessert spot here and in multiple cities. (I usually don't get Tsujiri's teas as I have my usuals in Yamamoto and Itou En, but because I see the bad Ohtani/Ootani way too often on the latter's displays as in the one on the Bums obviously, Shouhei [with the good one being Ikue-san who for us non-Japanese residents mostly know her as the voice actress of "Pokemon's" Pikachu], I may have to start getting Tsujiri's more often and Itou En's less often for matcha and houjicha. [I intentionally add the "-san" honorific to the good Ohtani and drop it to the bad Ohtani.] Yes Toronto and Canada, I too wanted the bad Ohtani to go to the Jays, not the Bums, and if you have always wondered why the Dodgers are called that, when the Trolley Dodgers [people dodged incoming trolleys to get to work] and the Giants were still in New York City's Brooklyn and Manhattan respectively until 1958, "New York World-Telegram" cartoonist Willard Mullin back in the day called them that as they didn't win their first and only east coast title until 1955, though the fortunes are the total opposite since they moved out west to Los Angeles and San Francisco.) Just like what I did with my Jirou review, I'll point out what items I see here that are not in my local cafes and vice versa. This will be a good reference section for me should I have the power to return to the city, and it will also give both you Canadians that haven't visited any of their multiple locations yet and international visitors an idea of what to expect. While I sit at multiple spots in my temporary home inserting the usual "Yes guys, the ladies are cute!" statement, I better mention this important note. Do keep in mind that the place, with a simple tea house look, is narrow. There aren't many places to sit at. There are just 2, 3 tables? Right around there. Let me get the item comparison part out of the way. Items I recall seeing here that are not in my local Japanese/Japanese ties cafes/dessert spots (the latter type involves a place I reviewed in Satura, a mainly European cafe at one of my suburbs with Japanese ties, including a partnership with a cafe/bakery in Tokyo)? There are items such as yuzu kakigoori (Japanese shaved ice), shiratama dango, dango parfait, and soft serve ice creams of matcha and houjicha. Items I recall seeing in my usual spots that are not in Tsujiri? Besides the cute decorations (multiple Sanrio characters coming to my mind instantly), the local Japanese bakeries/cafes have items such as kouign amann, "Anpanman" pan, Japanese strawberry short cake, ube matcha latte, and Japanese sodas. The fun part section? Seeing that my K-foodie sis, her friend and I are in a tea shop, a (too) legit (to quit) Japanese tea shop, of course I had to get tea in some form, as I picked the cold houjicha latte. We also had the matcha houjicha soft serve, a daifuku and an order of dango. As expected, the foods and drink are so good. Even my sister's friend said that the place is a perfect 5/5, and my sis likes the place despite not being as fond of Asian cafes or Asian desserts/pastries that aren't Filipino as I am. (She does like European ones like kouign amann though.) The flaws section? Normally, I penalize a cafe a star if it doesn't carry a caffeine free drink as I seriously think about the kids and how I often don't need the insane amount of caffeine, but because Tsujiri is a Japanese green tea company, I can't deduct a point for not having a mugicha. Besides, outside of mugicha, houjicha is a good alternative for kids that are old enough anyway. So, with that said/typed, the only flaw I can think of is the limited parking, but of course, this is Downtown Toronto now. Tsujiri is that good of a tea spot. Though there isn't an ideal parking situation, the place is that good of a spot because of the good tea and food. It may never be my top Japanese cafe (I've known Clover for around 20 years or so), but it is that good never the less. If you're looking for a good cafe/dessert spot in Toronto or in multiple cities in Canada, go to a Tsujiri spot! +/Tsujiri is terrific at being hospitable and flashing dashing foods and drinks, and having multiple locations in the country shows how good the spots have been. -/There's limited parking, but of course, this is Downtown Toronto/whatever Canadian city you're from after all.

Lots of wood elements seen in typical Japanese establishments.
