We came here on a Sunday afternoon we were spending in downtown Naperville. My boyfriend said he used to go to IKKAI for lunch when he was in high school. They have a few tables outside of the restaurant that you can eat at, but the ordering is similar to getting carry out. We started with two waters (they had a generic brand and Fiji bottled waters) and three rolls of sushi. The rolls we first ordered were Spicy Tuna, Moshi Moshi, and That roll. All of the sushi was great and we ended up ordering more - another Spicy Tuna, This roll, and some pieces of maguro. The ingredients here are very fresh and the tuna is the best I've had in the area. read more

I've eaten sushi all over the world and Ikkai truly surprised me with the quality of their fish and rolls. 100% will be my go-to sushi place in the Chicago area, can't wait to go back! I've been wanting to come here for awhile, and finally got to grab a lunch with a friend. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. We both ordered udon dishes and they were delicious! we had an unbelievably bad experience! I genuinely believe it is easier to apply for a green card than it is to get a seat at this resteraunt, and if by some miracle you happen to get a table the service is so rude and misleading. Our party of 5 was told that in order to sit and eat we would have to spend over 50 dollars per person, and if we failed to meet that total they would just forcibly add to our tab until we met their insane requirements. My party and I were disgusted at the service and professionalism, and we strongly recommend to stay as far away as possible! read more

Really good food and service! I biked to Ikkai cause I live right by downtown. Once I got there, the people were nice, offered me drinks and helped me get it on bike! Not to mention that the food is really good, I recommend the "Funyon" roll for Vegetarians and people. read more

I was around downtown Naperville trying to decide what to have lunch, I knew of a few sushi places but I passed by this one and said "why not". Well this little place blew me out of the water. The atmosphere is very relaxed with light jazz playing with plenty of people chatting around you quietly. Almost feels like a coffee shop in a way. But the food really stood out to me, I had the lunch combo which included miso soup and salad and both were a great start to my main course. One of the best sushi places I've been to in Naperville! The quality taste and welcoming service creates an inviting atmosphere which personally, I haven't experienced in a while. The quality of the fish and rolls are beyond superb. Every dish that we ordered was delivered with pristine decor and finesse, which was consistently matched with the taste that came along. Whether you are an avid sushi fan looking for a one-of-a-kind traditional omakase sitting or more prefer a wide variety of rolls and special appetizers, this is hands down the best place in Naperville. My wife and I have enjoyed two omakase sittings as well as a handful of regular meals and every time Chef Jay has exceeded our expectations. With fresh fish arriving from Japan every week, the variety and qualify Ikkai prides themself on comes through in every bite. Okay so here is 5 stars, but really it needs 6. The quality of the fish is so exceedingly high it is obscene. My greatest respect for the sushi chef that night not only did he recommend our choices but his skill and artistry is second to none. So, saying that don't go there so I can get a seat. The food was amazing, and the staff was kind. It is small but they also have outdoor seating. There is a bar and seats. We had the salmon teriyaki bento box. I would and have recommended this place to my friends and family. Every sushi place I have gone to is OK. This place is solid. Chef J is the chief. He rolls those sushi's up with care and love. With a great personality to make you want to come back. The servers are super attentive, and they have good selection of drinks. Japanese beer, sake ect. They always double check and give you condiments if needed. A side of spicy Mayo goes a long way. The miso soup is good, and the crab gyoza is delicious. Soooo good. I love the Naperville roll, and ikkai roll. I usually get 2 or 3 of each and the mango is good too. There is the yolo roll. It a little more money but your paying for the experience. It will fill you up though. They smoke file mignon and you lift up this bowl. Smoke coming out. Freakin awesome. The Naperville roll taste really good if you bring it home and serve it cold. Honestly every roll I ordered is good. On average you will spend about an hour here maybe hour and half. read more

Amazing! Visiting from San Diego, found this place w/ 5 star reviews and did not disappoint. Presentation is beyond what I've seen at high end sushi bars across the globe. Some of the freshest sushi I've had in Naperville! I really recommend their rainbow roll, that has all sorts of fish on there to try and it tasted amazing! They had really good service as well, but I would recommend going at a non busy time because the area is a bit small. I typically don't like midwest sushi but this one is pretty up there! Absolutely fabulous every way! I popped in here on a whim for lunch and was surprised and delighted by the extremely high quality food and service. The tuna gyoza is the BEST I've ever had. I've dropped so serious dough on fancy places in the city and still they take the cake on that appetizer alone. I also had the lunch special sushi and sashimi. Service lacks attention to detail, and seemed very inexperienced, for example; try to take away the plate that is obviously being used. Their special sushi plate consists of all white meat fish and it is served while being smoked in incense. I've had smoked sushis that were good in the past, but those were done differently, they smoked the fish and then made sushi. Ikkai's special is several pieces of white meat fish sushi with the same sauce on it, and then the whole thing gets smoked, along with the rice. The process not only eliminates the delicate flavour of the fish, but makes the rice taste overly smoky to enjoy. Their other dishes, as far as I had were decent, especially their tempura. read more

Tried this for the first time last night... I love sushi and I definitely judge new places on their quality. The first thing I noticed was that the majority of their rolls have cream cheese in them. But they did have amaebi shrimp, uni, and toro salmon on the menu so I was hopeful. I ordered 2 amaebi and we ordered 3 rolls. I had a really hard time ordering bc there was literally not a single roll without mayo. Every single roll is doused in mayonnaise, is a spicy salmon/tuna mayo mix, or has multiple mayonnaise based sauces... needless to say I didn't care for any of them. Nothing looked super fresh. The amaebi came out and also didn't look or taste super fresh. I was really disappointed. We also ordered udon noodles and these two had mayonnaise on them.... Needless to say I can't eat here again. Amazing! A friend told us about their sushi and IKKAI did not disappoint. We got the zesty salmon, the this, and the that rolls. The tuna was fresh and the rolls were expertly crafted. Everything was so delicious and before we got out rolls the server brought out the chefs special appetizer. It's a little salmon roll with their signature sauce and it was delicious. INCREDIBLEEE! Is the first word to come to mind when I tried my first sushi rolls from Ikkai today. This restaurant makes blue sushi seem like the "Tex Mex" of sushi. I could tell that the flavors in each roll were intentionally chosen! It seems like the chefs put a lot of integrity behind their food! I ordered the Purunga roll, 106 roll, and a spicy tuna roll, and enjoyed each one. A coworker recommended me to try this restaurant. She's said they are really kind people. We work downtown Naperville, so she comes here often. I was nervous when I saw caramel sauce and some of the other flavor profiles, but it is like each flavor is uniquely curated for the rolls. This is the best sushi you will have in Naperville hands down. Highly recommend, and I will be coming back. read more

Best service, staff, and skills I've experienced at a sushi bar stateside! And my bar is set high as I grew up in Japan. Jay, the owner, served us from behind the sushi bar personally some specialty dishes to entertain our pallets. His skills and passion were so refreshing and welcoming! Felt right at home! The repertoire of Chefs in all these joints are quite similar, and the quality is measured by how inspired the chef is, and THAT metric is subjective to the receptiveness of the table. If all are ready to have a good time, the Circuses will match the Bread. If there's a Bruno Bummer in the crowd, it's going to be a long meal. Fortunately, our crew is of the "fun" persuasion and the Chef seemed to be, as well. Got the most part they were good but some pieces I thought were slightly overcooked. For my entree I got the steak hibachi and it included fried rice, miso soup, and a small side salad. I don't know what type of dressing they put on the salad but it was delicious. Our hibachi chef was pretty funny. He did all his cool tricks. Our waitress was also very friendly. Right before our food was served I did notice my plate was dirty. It had left over food, which I circled in the picture. Not a big deal though since my waitress got me a new plate immediately. The landscaping is done regularly and the small pond with Koi fish was clean! We made a reservation for 6pm on a Saturday night. It was busy so we had to wait about 15 minutes. It wasn't bad, as we sat and talked amongst ourselves. The process to alert parties is great as you are handed a buzzer so that they aren't screaming your name over the crowd. Once we arrived at our table and settled. Our hostess, Wayan (Why-un) arrived asking for our drink orders. Wayan was attentive and sooooo kind. He handled the stress of a busy restaurant floor with ease. He was not afraid to clarify or correct an issue before it became an issue. He was wonderful! Our chef was soooo entertaining. He cooked well and made sure we felt as if his performance was just for us. He was great!! The only reason I gave 4 stars was because the floors were slippery. They felt greasy, and it made me fearful to walk on the floor. The food did not disappoint and neither did the service!

IKKAI is a true hidden gem and the best place for sushi in downtown Naperville. I tried the scallop crudo special and 109 roll. The scallop crudo had cucumber, avocado, mandarins, and yuzu sauce and was served with rice crackers. It was bright, citrusy, and the perfect starter. The 109 roll had crab, avocado, cream cheese, and was topped with baked salmon. This roll was absolutely delicious - rich, sweet, and savory. I could not have been more happy with the food. The service was fast and efficient, and the staff was very pleasant. The only qualm I have is that the lighting, especially during dinner, is really subpar. The restaurant is dark, and since we were sitting in the corner it was impossible to see our food without pulling out a flashlight. I've been a few places like this, from the familiar Benihana to a long-shuttered shithole storefront in OakPark where the Chef tried valiantly to put on a show, but fortunately he was a better Chef than a Showman. Shinto, here, is a fave of Daughter #3 and her family so we took over an entire table with our Party. A bit of Sushi pre-show, (it was edible) and then, curtains UP! The repertoire of Chefs in all these joints are quite similar, and the quality is measured by how inspired the chef is, and THAT metric is subjective to the receptiveness of the table. If all are ready to have a good time, the Circuses will match the Bread. If there's a Bruno Bummer in the crowd, it's going to be a long meal. Fortunately, our crew is of the "fun" persuasion and the Chef seemed to be, as well. The theatrics were the usual moves- tossing knives (and bits of Shrimp) in the air, and each of us got a chance to catch morsels in our mouths (mostly futile). The "onion train" thing, and occasional flambé were there, as was the balancing of the bowl of rice on a knife. The "Mustard Bottle with a string" is always good for a laugh. The Menu is pretty much the same at all of these places-Shrimp, Steak, or Chicken, Salad, Fried Rice, Veggies. All theatrically prepared in front of you. All of it top-quality and tasty. It would have been a great feed even without the stage show. If you're particular to only one type of dressing on your salad, you're out of luck unless you're into Soy Ginger, which is the onliest topper you're going to find here. Personally, I dig it, but Wife who is a Ranch aficionado took a pass. The Fried Rice was exceptional. There was nothing out of the ordinary in the ingredients, so the Chef's deft hand was responsible for the Yum. The Chef was quite fun, and he got our steaks off at the perfect desired temperatures, while keeping up the theatrics. There's an option for "French Garlic" topping for the proteins which is basically Garlic, Butter, and Breadcrumbs. This stuff would make a ceiling tile palatable. If you visit here, I highly recommend it. If you're looking for something different in the Hibachi line, this ain't it. But the show and the food were top-notch Throwing a well-deserved 5 stars.
