When I go out with my brother-in-law (Let's change his name to Rich), I KNOW it is gonna be good. He has been going here practically since it opened, the story goes way back in the early eighties he was taking a cab to Logan and the cab driver and he got to talking, Rich said he was into food and the cabbie said he should try a restaurant his brother owned and was the chef. So Rich did and now it is 30 years later, let's just say he is a bit of a VIP here. I ordered the mushroom souffle to spilt and the swordfish as an entree. Of course the kitchen sent out a complimentary salumi platter and a veal carpaccio for the table. Now let me just say that neither Rich or my sister eat read meat, so I had to take the bullet for the table and eat most of it. (they could eat the chicken liver pate on the salumi plate). The mushroom souffle was amazing, but I did get a teeny bit of grit from the mushrooms, not really enough to bother me, but enough to notice. Super good. I also had the swordfish which would have made for a light-ish meal, if I hadn't eaten all the of the salumi and the carpaccio. Dessert, we split a cheese plate, the truffle pecorino was my favorite. The food was exceptional in taste and appearance! Creative, well cooked dishes that combined flavors in magic ways. But like all really good restaurants it was the service that made all the difference. One person in our group had a food allergy and the waiter went through the menu with them carefully to find suitable items while offering to make appropriate substitutes. He was also well versed on the wine list which resulted in a perfect pairing for our meal. For me friendly, knowledgeable and attentive service makes any dining experience special. We went to Il Capriccio to celebrate a couple of birthdays. We expected a good meal, but, wow, did they surpass our expectations! From the drinks (a perfect Vesper!), to the appetizers, to the main courses, everything was excellent. And the service (thank you, Ann) was terrific - friendly and with everything well-timed. I've been coming here regularly for the past 3 years ever since I moved back to town, and for good reason. So it seems like it is time to update my review and upgrade Il Capriccio to a well-deserved 5 stars. Everything is wonderful here, from the attractive but still relaxing space, the pleasant service, the fantastic wine list, to the fresh made pastas. My previous criticism of one pasta dish, was apparently a one-off and has not been repeated. It is rare that a celebratory meal for 15 people goes off without a hitch, never mind when it's the day after Thanksgiving. Our server, Linda, and the rest of the staff at Il Capriccio defied the odds. From the initial reservation-making through the course of the meal to the post-meal stop at the bar, the staff were flexible and accommodating, ensuring that our father's 88th birthday was a memorable and festive event. As relatively frequent patrons (most of the party had never been to Il Capriccio), we knew the food would be well-prepared and the menu offered something for everyone (no small task for our family). In fact, the most difficult part of the evening was figuring out what we wanted since each of the dishes sounded so enticing. When the meal was served, everyone commented on the preparation and of course how delicious each dish was. Linda did a masterful job of pacing the meal, keeping the wine flowing and ensuring that the guest of honor was doted on. (If you are hosting a group dinner in one of the private rooms ask for her although we're sure the other servers are just as professional). Once dinner was over, we headed to the bar where Dylan took excellent care of our dad and slid him a glass of Glenmorangie. We all raised our glasses in a final birthday toast. We got to the bar at opening on Sat and shared three apps: porcini soufflé, mushroom polenta and grilled chicken livers with prosciutto. All around $15 and delicious. Recommended by our wonderful server were m a type of sweet light white wine to start off, grilled octopus for appetizer, the special veal risottos, Bolognese fettuccine, panna cotta and warmed chocolate burdino to end. Grilled octopus: nice presentation. Very soft: it's good but I had better. Special veal risotto: not a fan of it. Big chuck of very soft meat that wasn't seasoned well to my preference. Bolognese pasta: ehh aokay nothing special I wouldn't order it again The desserts were good ! To sum up, very nice servers they go up and beyond to make sure everything is well. With rare exceptions - think Godfather II - a sequel never measures up to the original. So with a bit of skepticism, I dined at the new Il Capriccio. Over a 38-year run Il Cap became an iconic dining destination. I was a regular. When chef/owner Richie Baron and his team were firing on all cylinders, I could close my eyes and imagine I was in a hilltop town in Italy. The food, the wine, the service and the ambience combined for a transformative experience. First things first. Richie Baron is not involved in the new Il Capriccio. Baron reached a personal fork-in-the-road when the pandemic forced him to close in 2020. He had been planning to retire. As the closure dragged on, Baron decided the time was right to hang up his apron. Enter Michael Chapman - the owner of The Glenville Stops in Allston - who purchased the name, wine inventory and a trailer load of fixtures/furnishings. New space was secured at The Merc Building. In May, the new Il Capriccio opened its doors. The Il Cap "vibe" was an important part of the former restaurant. White tablecloths; soft lighting; muted two-tone colors; windowed partitions that created intimate seating; curated music. None of that is present at the new Il Capriccio. Chapman has made gestures toward recreating the old "vibe", but those gestures fall flat. The two-tone colors are there. But that's all. The odd layout, the open/exposed ceilings, the Home Depot quality of materials, contribute to a sterile ambience. The bar - a hub of camaraderie and social buzz in the old place - is a shell of its old self. Eight seats sit at a wooden counter that feels more like suburban home finished basement than upscale bar. Lighting is ghastly - more interrogation room than intimate lounge. Tables and chairs are TGI Friday's quality, and a service station/employee wash sink lurks menacingly in an open area toward the rear of the space. The space boasts big windows. But Waltham got the better end of the deal. Better to look into the restaurant from the outside than to look out on convenience stores, smoke shops and neon lights on one side and a bare parking lot on the other. The completely covered and blacked-out windows at the old location are missed - it was always cozy and comforting. I don't know who "curated" the dining playlist. I heard everything from far eastern spa music to elevator jingles. The menu remains unchanged. The classics - including the soufflé di porcini - are there. With most kitchen staff holding over to the new location, execution is reliable even if occasionally uninspired. No doubt, Baron's absence in the kitchen can be felt. The wine list remains a strength. No surprise, given that the wine inventory was part of the restaurant purchase, and Jan Novak remains at the helm of the wine program. It remains to be seen, however, if Chapman will have the foresight and will to continue to invest in the wine program. Service on all of my visits was prompt, courteous and professional. Again, no surprise. Most of the dining room staff has stayed on board, many with 25 years of experience. A meal at the new Il Capriccio will be satisfactory - as long as current staff remains in place. That is not a given. Some staff seem perplexed and frustrated by the new ownership. And, at these prices, is "satisfactory" good enough? Chapman appears to be a fanatic for detail. The problem is where that fanaticism is directed. The owner can be seen polishing glasses behind the bar and carefully arranging them inch-by-inch. If only that focus could be redirected toward improving the aesthetics of the restaurant and the morale of his team. I'd cede control to the staff that understands what made Il Capriccio a success for 38 years. They are the best bet for extending the restaurant's success into the future. Met client and employee for dinner in Monday, March 7th. Upon my arrival I greeted my guests in the bar. I then walked to the bathroom to freshen up after several hours of travel. I was surprised to be followed to the bathroom by a manager. The manager looked me over, grabbed three paper towels and left. He didn't wipe his hands or wipe a counter. I then saw him dispose of the unused paper towels at the greeting station. Although I was dressed in business attire, for some strange reason the manager found my presence of some concern. I can only conclude one reason the manager would have found my presence an issue. I happened to be the only Black person in the building. It's unfortunate that because of the presence of my client and employee I could not address my concern. We ordered a small plate of linguini carbonara. It was soft and mild - they added a poached? Egg to it. interesting touch / not sure I liked the egg, but intriguing. Overall: Clean, elegant, friendly with well prepared offerings. Superb diverse wine list that has many hard to find and many affordable offerings. Tell the staff what you like and they will know what to suggest. Several lovely wines by the glass. We had a biodynamic red from northern Italy which pleased everyone- a dolchetto (despite its name it is not sweet) The ribolita soup (veg bean) is a classic Florentine dish (sans bread due to gluten free diets) that I wish I would see more often. Two of our group had the meaty special, a quail stuffed with prosciutto wrapped veal. Ihad a half plate of rabbit ragu gnocchi and another had a carbonara, all prepared lovingly. Desserts were not needed but enjoyed- Had the baked Alaska and loved the freshness of the strawberry ice cream. You can celebrate to to max here, with four courses and desert or have an excellent supper that won't break the bank. Il Capriccio is a cute little Italian cusine on Main St in Waltham, MA. The ambiance is nice and the food is plenty delicious. If you live in the suburbs and don't feel like driving all the way into the city to find a high quality restaurant, this is just the perfect place. I have tried the organic giannone chicken, fried egg, lemon, white whine, sage and herbs...such an excellent combination with a nice touch sage and herbs. I have also tried the lasagna bolognese, which is some of the best lasagna I have ever had. The cheese and fine ground beef is evenly spread in every layer to create a uniform lasagna. We came here last night for a team dinner, and I was blown away by this gem that my colleague had found. Delectable food, expert sommelier, and on-point service. At the recommendation of our sommelier, we started with a fantastic (local!) Turtle Creek Cab Franc from nearby Lincoln, MA, and it was delicious! A bit of a drier red zin. For my first course, I ordered the "Mixed Greens, Lemon Vinaigrette, Parmigiano Reggiano" salad, which was delicious - as expected. As my entree, I ordered the "Sautéed Veal Tenderloin Saltimbocca, Prosciutto, Sage, Lemon, White Wine and Onion Tart," which was amazing - yum! Last - but not least - I ordered the "Lemon Mousse with Candied Lemon Rinds" as dessert, and it was divine. On a side note, a colleague ordered the squid ink risotto, and - while I think it may have been my first time - I tried a bite, and it was also great. Definitely recommend this restaurant if you're in from out-of-town and/or live in the area. It surprised me in its quality of ingredients, preparation, service, wine selection/knowledge, and ambiance. I feel uncomfortable giving Il Capriccio an average rating, when it has such terrific reviews and when I had loved it in the past. My previous visits to the restaurant several years ago were absolutely delightful. However, my recent visit left me unimpressed. The restaurant is bland from the outside. The lack of windows is odd, but does induce curiosity at the delicacies served within. The inside of Il Capriccio is classy and elegant. You should expect to dine among the area's older, stuffier upper class. While you wait for your meal, you should take a look at the substantial wine list or order one of their fantastically mixed cocktails. The bartenders show their superb taste by replacing sour mix with fresh lemon and cherry juices. Delicious bread is also served. My started with the Souffle di Porchini, which was some kind of mushroom and cheese casserole. It was a mound of mixed mushrooms covered with a warm, creamy cheese sauce. The sauce was very cheesy, but good. The mushrooms were very flavorful. For an entree, I ordered the Roast Giannone Chicken, which cooked in a Porchini and Marsala mushroom glace. It was served with a cheesy, au'gratin style potato tart and sauteed vegetables. The chicken was bland and undercooked. The potato was the best part of the meal. This restaurant is good for groups, and I went in a large one, but no one really enjoyed their food. I heard the Baby Spinach and Sweet Onion Lasagna was too full of onions and the Pan Roasted Trout was virtually flavorless. We were all very disappointed. With all of the other delicious restaurants around the Boston-area, I do not think I will rush back here any time soon. read more

Sat at the bar to grab carbonara. It was slightly al dente/good. Not the best-cooked, slightly salty, but the bread evened it out. The egg was more than perfect, and I've never had an egg with pasta. I was also very happy to find out that the smaller plate of carbonara was only $15; however, I was a little taken aback when I got the bill to learn that my glass of wine was about the same price $13. I did ask for a house wine to keep it simple, but that seems to be the standard price, and the wine was good, so I guess I shouldn't complain. I wasn't thrilled. We came for a family birthday celebration. From the outside it is pretty nondescript, maybe even hard to find since they have a very small sign. Inside is very nice and subdued. We all had different things, but everyone agreed that the food was delicious and beautifully presented. I had the veal chop that was truly wonderful. The service was good across the board. They greeted us warmly at the door, and everyone was efficient and attentive. Perfect service and a lot of tables so no issues with reservations. We got the grilled octopus and the roasted cauliflower as antipasti and then we shared a gnocchi with the pear salad. All the plates were perfectly done and tasted amazing. The only thing we didn't love was dessert. We got the pecan pie with chocolate, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. I don't know exactly why but the combination didn't quite work and how the pecan was in little pieces combined with that type of chocolate made it a not so cool combination. Where do I even start. Il Capriccio is absolutely amazing in every way. I was recently there with my husband and friends celebrating my 40th Birthday. Jan, our server and resident sommelier, went above and beyond. She was sweet, funny, recommended wonderful food and beverages and is the best of the best. The service, ambiance, quality and presentation of food and taste is fresh, seasonal, beautiful and we savored every bite. The menu changes seasonally but there are some staples that are a must have including Souffle di Porcini, Salumi with olives and Parmigiano, anything from the pasta selection, Giannone Chicken "Schnitzel" with fried egg, arugula, mustard-caper sauce and herbed spätzle, lemon mousse with candied lemon rinds. Be sure to read the entire menu, as Chef Richie always has something fun to say at the bottom. Honestly, I was hesitant to write this review as I didn't want to share this hidden gem, but it was so good to not share. This is probably one of the best restaurants north of Boston. I have been going here for years and have never had anything less than amazing service and outstanding food. You will always find the perfect wine to go with your food. The Porcini Soufflé is the stuff dreams are made of. Every time I go I have to get this even if I tell myself to try something new. I love savory food and this is a must for the umami lovers out there! The lasagna Bolognese is different but in the best way possible. It's made with a béchamel sauce with some red sauce and meat. Loved it. I usually get the Gionne chicken but it's always i the menu so I wanted to try something different. I got the pork shank Osso Buco was so flavorful. I have not had Osso buco more than a couple of times but when I think of classic Milanese fare, this tastes perfect! If you are a foodie like myself, you have to try this place! read more

I am writing this review because I have just been informed Il Capriccio is no more. I am saddened by the fact, because this restaurant was amazing. Blew my culinary mind! My favorite was the mushroom soufflé, it was better then sex ;) They had a changing menu, I just ordered whatever looked good. But I have had it all, seafood, lamb, pork, vegetarian, chicken, etc. Did I mention dessert, insane! This place created the most beautiful and delicious dishes that I dream of to this day. You notice right when you walk into Il Capriccio the significant attention that the staff gives to each table while maintaining a warm feel to the restaurant as a whole. The menu is primarily a fusion of Italian and French cooking with a few other European influences. We started with the Porcini souffle and the Escargot, both of which were unique and delicious. For the entree course, I had the veal tenderloin which was prepared in an exquisite sauce featuring Chanterelle mushrooms. The vegetables that come with each entree also were perfectly-seasoned, providing some lightness to a heavier meal. The other members of our party had the chicken schnitzel and cod, both of which were revamped takes on traditional classics. They got a shared parking with the liquid store, and you can also find street parking on the other side of the restaurant. The decoration was nice. When you walk in, they kindly check your coat for you which doesn't happen at many restaurants. We've come for the third time to celebrate a birthday and they decorate the table with little embellishments and light a candle with your dessert. First off, the service is great and attentive. Two thumbs up there. Lovely folks. I had the porcini souffle, partially because of recommendations here. However, it was a very odd dish. It's more of a pudding than a souffle, and the deep browning looked a bit dried out and points that it was not cooked in a water bath. While you can tell it had egg whites in it, the heaviness of the other ingredients overcame much of their effect. It is served in a bubbling cheese sauce, which is very heavy on the marsala (tastes like low-grade marsala), and left a burnt brown edge around the plate. Strange. The gnocchi with lobster and shrimp was fine--tasted like the broth was finished with more of that marsla. Nice that they offer a smaller portion if you're not looking for a lot of food. read more

This is a wonderful and sophisticated restaurant to bring someone special to. The balsamic vinegar that was used on my beet and goat cheese salad was the silkiest balsamic I've ever tasted. It's fancy so I was expecting the bar to have the ingredients to make my favorite cocktail (Ford Cocktail) but they didn't. They're known for their wine selection so I shouldn't have been surprised but that's really the only reason for not getting 5 stars. I went with my dad and our food was perfectly prepared, our waiter was knowledgeable and non-intrusive, and the atmosphere was warm and intimate. I would definitely come here again for a special occasion. Update: just returned here to celebrate my husband's birthday and there isn't anything that could have gone better. Sadly Il Capriccio is now closed for good. It had been my favorite go to spot in the Greater Boston area for over three decades. Everything on their menu was excellent with a wow factor. Their ingredients were fresh and top quality. The kitchen had the great skill to prepare the dishes so that the quality and essence of the ingredients rang out with a wow factor on each bite. I always enjoyed the awe on a guest's face when we took them to Il Capriccio for the first time and they took their first bite of a dish. That awed expression was almost always met with a wow. What made Il Capriccio great was that the reaction was the same for all of their dishes. One could close their eyes and randomly pick out any dish at random and the satisfaction would be the same. They knew their wines and had a wonderful wine selection. What made them unparalleled was the value they provided with their wines. They never marked up their wine excessively and never tried to up-sell to a more expensive wine. They would recommend the best wine for your dinner and nail it. The only shock one would receive with the bill was how reasonable the cost of the wine was. I'd also like to give a shout out to the bar staff. They know how to make a great cocktail. What added to the experience was a seasoned personable staff that did everything right. They didn't just know how to handle their roles but also how to handle unexpected events. Forget your glasses, they would provide you with a pair. Spill wine on your clothing, they knew how to fix it. They had a remarkable team that knew how to function as a team. Despite being successful for decades, each day they would get together as a team and examine what they could do better. That's a big reason why they were at the top when it came to dining and developed a loyal following that came back dozens and even hundreds of times over the years. Very overpriced for the quality and quantity. I split the large linguini with a friend and the amount given was barely enough to fill one person yet alone two. It was bland, and it seemed as though they just drowned the pasta in olive oil to give it some flavor, which didn't work. Service was fine, but definitely wouldn't return just because of how expensive it is for a sub-par meal. read more
