Staff behind the counter wasn't into much chit-chatting; I asked what is the most popular bread they sell; clerk suggested the Prosciutto bread- so purchased a long loaf of it, and also decided on a Pistachio tart as well. The prosciutto loaf tasted really good, with a chewy texture on the inside and lots of prosciutto bits all over the loaf of bread- a bit greasy and salty (I liked it). Came on a Saturday before they closed, order by the pound. Cute local bakery, picked up some cookies to fly back home and share with the family. A few of the cookies are at $13 a pound and others were at $12. I love the rainbow, figs and jam cookies! I can't wait to come back and pick up some great looking bread. I've seen lines form for the holidays, I've seen the door swing back and forth with the repeated customers, I've also seen myself visiting the shop twice in a day because my carb loving ass couldn't resist the stuff they're pumping out. Classic Italian bakery. For those familiar with calandra's in NJ, this is the Brooklyn version although on a smaller scale. They have a nice selection but the panella is my go to and honestly it's probably some of the best in nyc. You'll also find speciality items like olive. prosciutto and pizza breads and focaccia. All delicious. I am also a fan of the Kaiser and dinner rolls. The pastries and other sweet items are nothing special but I always have room for one of the rainbow cookies. The storefront is small so depending on when you go, you should be prepared to wait a few minutes before you get served. read more

Toasted with butter and jam or have it savory with melted cheese and/or some avocados is my go to way. My secret to prolonging my loaf is... freezing it! Frozen sourdough bread makes great toast and grilled cheese sandwiches! Close in distance to the other venerable Royal Crown, I had to implore the Italian owner to let me take pictures of the bread- lined up like Royal Crown- grazie. What a great neighborhood staple to have so close. I'm not a huge bread eater but if I'm buying bread I come here. Their bread is just light enough and crusty. I bought a whole wheat loaf and had it sliced. They have crunchy taralli, different kinds. Lard bread, excellent! Tomato focaccia my favorite. All kinds of rolls, cookies and breads. Love this place! An old fashioned Italian bread store still operating in the heart of Bensonhurst. The bread is amazing and made here daily! Smelling this place in the morning makes the mouth water, and the focaccia is delicious. I've tried many of their breads and have not been disappointed. Went there this morning not knowing it was not Leske's being there was no sign indicating new ownership/name change. The lady working was extremely nice however when I kept asking why the shelves were empty she said they are making minimal items due to construction. It wasn't until I got to work and noticed the new name on box! Ok.. no problem with that but when my staff and I opened the box of donuts, they looked better than they tasted!! In fact there were horrible!! The custard tasted curdled and the all tasted stale. I called and the lady on phone was obnoxiously rude!! Stay away from there!! What a waste of money!! read more

Some of my favorites include the Pane di Casa with roasted red tomatoes and the Pizza Dough bread with onions.
