Had lunch at Sol's last Wednesday. Did not disappoint! We all had the Matzo ball soup which was amazing! The broth very flavorful, and the matzo so good! A couple of us had Reuben sandwiches, while the others had pastrami. They were the real deal deli thick with meat and delicious rye bread! We also had the NY style cheesecake! It was so thick and creamy! Our party of 5 all enjoyed our meals, our waitress was sweet and accommodating and we met Sol who asked about our meals! He was a gem! Did you ever really want to like a restaurant but it just didn't work? I really like the idea of joining deli with an Italian restaurant. Great to have the wide range of choices. Really appreciated outdoor seating so that doggy dining was an option. Hope that over time the two restaurants can fuse into one that can pull it off. None of the problems seem insurmountable but they sure don't make you eager to return. My first visit was a week ago and a takeout order. The cashier really struggled with the Sol's menu and kept forgetting and asking what I wanted. Dr. Brown's sofa stumped although I saw it in the cooler behind her. Not putting a lid on the coleslaw ended up soaking the bread on the corned beef sandwich. No sign of the Russian dressing I requested. Cheesecake has an interesting crust but was delicious. No tiramisu in stock. Cashier tried to sell me Mousse instead. Tonight was vastly worse. Sat outside waiting a longtime for a server. No one came out so after while I went in and tried to order. I was told that wasn't allowed and someone would be out. Was grateful a dog lover working the Sol's counter saw us out the window and kindly offered us water for the dog. Finally another table sent the server over to help us. She was very pleasant but just had too many tables or too much going on. We finally got food. Was enjoying the pizza until finding a hair in it. The deli meats are prepared to Sol's spec's and are superb! The service is second to none. YOU WILL NOT REGRET THIS VISIT! By the way, don't turn down the homemade cheesecake...IT IS PERHAPS THE BEST CHEESECAKE IVE EVER TASTED. I'm not a big fan of cheesecake......BUT I LOVED EVERY BITE! Skip this place!!! Tried to call in an order for pick up; I have never been treated so rudely by three different people including one who identified himself as a manager. I was told that even though the "New York Deli" side had both pastrami and turkey I couldn't get a pastrami and turkey sandwich because it wasn't on the menu. It just got worse from there including the so-called manager interrupting me every time I tried to speak. I give this place a two solely due to the ambiance. It has a nice outside seating area. The server was terrible. She may have been new and that's why she couldn't answer any of our questions. My husband ordered the chicken parmesan and I ordered the shrimp scampi. His chicken was over fried and tough. My scampi was basically oil and pasta. This was our first visit and we will be back. My wife had the goat cheese salad with chicken. The chicken was moist and tasty. The only negative was there was only one salad dressing option. We walked in looking to make a to go order and we were looked at by the employee liked we shouldn't be there. The employee gave rude remarks when being questioned about the menu and when our pizza was finally ready they just said "pizzas ready" in a soft and rude tone. Before we left we asked for some plates and napkins and he just said napkins are on the table without bothering to look in our direction. We've eaten several times at Gulf Gate since they've opened...to various degrees of satisfaction initially in December 'this is good' to tonight's "eh - could have been better." The pizza, for best results, needs to be ordered freshly made while you wait. One size only is available...large. Slices are popped out of the pie showcase into the oven for a quick warm up and if forgotten about, can be slightly dry. Tonight, to save time, we ordered a cheese pizza for pick up tonight and told 15-20 minutes. I expected to see it come out of the oven when I arrived (from 8 miles away) but it was sitting in the box on the shelf (not kept warm on the oventop). When we got home, it was already cold and in need of reheating. I suspect it was the untouched cheese pie from the showcase from the mid-afternoon and given a quick reheat. Very disappointing to say the least. The calzones are good but hard to cut and eat when you're worried about getting the tin foil from the bottom on the shallow bowl caught on your fillings...should not be served with the foil lining under the food. I've gotten this twice .. last one I ordered came out with a nearly burnt casing but perhaps that was because it was a very busy night. The building interior is 'factory' style so expect A LOT of noise from the concrete and glass when it gets busy with families. We have been there in the early evening...4:30 - 5:30 on the way home from work and enjoyed sitting until the neighborhood dinner crowds show up and the noise level goes up. But tonight, at 5:45, there weren't but a handful of people compared to the 30-40 people we used to see at that time on a week night. I think we're going back around the corner to Superior Ave for Pontillo's pizza after tonight's fiasco with that $15.00 pizza. read more

Worst service and food this winter! Party of 5 - 3 sandwiches and a pizza ordered. Hot meatball sandwich delivered first - 2 cold subs 5 minutes later - pizza 30 minutes later! Cold subs had basically no meat and hot meatball sandwich went cold waiting for rest of food. Pizza was soggy in middle and crust burnt on edges. Complained. "Manager" came to table 15 minutes later and asked what he could do. Asked for pizza comp at the least. He said he guessed he could BUT still charged the couple for their soft drinks! When we arrived initially we were the first customers to be seated so they were not overly busy except maybe "carryouts"? Bad service; don't promise pickup in 30 minutes when it will really be more than an hour. An hour is fine, just let us know. Also, don't charge extra for things like pizza sauce, if you consistently forget to include them as ordered. Getting the order right is important too! Sol's used to be the best deli in Sarasota and a favorite for me and my husband. It is no longer. The corned beef sandwich I had was small and the corned beef was clearly not "home made" or even close to what it was about a month ago. It was rubbery and tasteless. The sandwich was also VERY small. I can't imagine where they got a loaf of rye bread that made such a tiny slice.The potato salad that used to be made there was obviously stale, dry and also tasteless. RUDEST STAFF EVER! We came into this restaurant based on the online menu (we were sold on the caprese pizza and garlic knots). When we came in we took a minute to look over the menu behind the counter and it was not the same as the online menu AT ALL. We were finally acknowledged after several minutes and the man (middle aged Hispanic man) not friendly at all began to take our order. We began by asking for a cheese and a tomato, basil, and ricotta pizza. Then we asked for an order of garlic knots. (Which are on the menu online) And the response we got: LAUGHTER. IN OUR FACE. You order at the counter and seat yourself. They have pizza by the slice or the whole pie. They have salads, sandwiches and some main dishes. We have only tried the pizza, wine and cannoli's. (what else do you need?) The cannoli's are filled fresh for you when you ask for them. We love the fact that you can get a glass of wine and just sit down with it. There is a small bar that serves coffee drinks, capuccinos, espresso, etc. Iit would be fun to just go over for dessert and espresso. When the weather is warm they can open the big glass sliding windows and you are essentially eating outside. It's only been open a short time but is already getting crowded at times. I think the pizza is okay. I'm not sure what it is about this location, but it's just not as good or efficient as their location downtown. As previously mentioned, the Caesar salad is laughable; for $8 you get romaine lettuce, stale croutons and some Parmesan cheese. If you order to go, you would be wise to double or even triple the time they give you. Then when you complain some old guy will say "at least it's hot and fresh" because that makes everything better. I've been going to their Main Street location for years and finally made it to the Gateway location. I love the new restaurant because they're able to serve more things and there is a greater amount of seating available. I love Il Panificio's pizza. I feel that it is a good price for what you get. They charge per slice, and a slice is practically a 1/4 of a large pizza. I love their ingredients: ricotta, artichoke hearts, olives, Mediterranean style etc. Their pizza is thin crust, so if you're not a fan of that, then I don't recommend them. I love their desserts and drink variety. I don't know many places that you can get an Orangina, but you can here. I also love that it is family owned and I went to school with the owner's kids. Great place for thin crust pizza! We went looking for some vegetarian pizzas and there were lots too choose from. We ordered a margherita and veggie pizza. We were expecting them to be medium type sizes for the price but they were huge! The margherita pizza was loaded with tomatoes and basil and the cheese blend was great. The veggie was also loaded with lots of fresh veggies as well. The pizzas were filling and yummy and there were leftovers too. The party I was with had the calamari which was good, but could have used an additional red sauce along with the other sauces that came with it. The mussels were also excellent and great quality. Not a bad mussel in there and the white wine sauce made them taste even better. The server we had was super friendly and attentive, kept checking in on us at the right times to make sure we were doing fine, and offered a choice of cookie each for our little ones after the meal which they were really happy about. I like the open and airy feel of the place and it was a nice and relaxed atmosphere. We will definitely be back!!! read more

Sol's food is the best Corned Beef Deli in Sarasota. It's an authentic NYC Deli. Unfortunately their customer service is less than average. It took 20 minutes for someone just to come to the counter last time I was there. The last 3 take out orders they have forgot to fulfill order correctly. Maybe write down the order guys when you take the call and have a staff meeting to shore up your service. read more
