cross-section of the bacio gelato cake where you can see the tiny wedge of cake
Elizabeth Y.

Amazing bakery! I found Il Pastificio on Yelp when I was looking for an ice cream cake for a birthday; it was one of the few places that delivered ice cream cakes to Cambridge that also had good ratings. I saw that they offered gelato cakes (an upgrade from ice cream!), but Mercato, the delivery site, only listed a couple of flavors of cake, while it had many more types of gelato. When I called to ask if the bakery had other cake options, I spoke with Sandra, who explained that they make their cakes fresh so not all of them are listed. (So definitely call to check if you don't see what you're looking for on their website; they have an amazing variety of flavors!) She was super nice and helpful--she walked me through the cake options, added the specific cake I wanted (bacio--chocolate and hazelnut) to the delivery site, and made sure I knew how to specify the cake message on the delivery site. We were all amazed by the quality of the cake--it was really beautiful, topped with a cute flute of sugar sparkles, with dark chocolate rose decorations around the circumference of the top and bottom. And in addition to being enormous and pretty, the cake was delicious! The cake was largely composed of chocolate hazelnut gelato, which was really thick (someone analogized the denseness to that of liquid nitrogen ice cream) and creamy and had strong, balanced flavors of chocolate and hazelnut. A further plus was that it was not too sweet, as ice cream sometimes is. The cake did not melt or get messy while it was sitting out, which was great. (Gelato has a higher melting point than ice cream, which makes gelato cake better than ice cream cake!) There was a small pat of yellow cake that did not span the bottom of the cake but served as the base. It was moist and really tasty--we wished there was more, but the gelato was so good that it was still a big hit. Thank you, Sandra and Il Pastificio for making our birthday celebration a success! We're looking forward to eating the leftovers :)

I order from here frequently for events as well as family parties. Always excellent quality and taste. They now have Pre made dinners available and catering trays of chicken parmigiana, eggplant parmigiana, lasagna and other pasta. I highly recommend the chicken cutlets!!

Great atmosphere, super clean, nice staff. And really great, made-to-order food. Fresh, Italian food by the ocean:-D

Rum cake with a chocolate box with chocolate pearls inside. YUM.

Still as amazing as ever. New additions to note: new flavors for biscotti like lemon cranberry and other magical things. Still love the amazing pasta, especially the spicy fusilli which is uh-may-zing. Also gnocchi. Tony and his daughter Sandra are the best. They pay attention to detail and take pride in using quality ingredients and they are just awesome. Big plus recently. I ordered a rum cake for a birthday and all I said was "chocolate lovers". Let me tell you, it was one of the lost beautiful cakes I had ever seen. There was an actual chocolate box that opened on top of the cake and it was filled with chocolate pearls inside. That alone, was worth three times the price of the cake, seriously. Love this place!! Did I say that already??

It was perfect. My husband ordered the cake from this location for our 5th wedding anniversary. The cake was for 30 guest. It was more than what we had expected. Everyone loved the cake and wanted more of the cake to bring home. Bonus: My husband wanted to try the canolies (not sure of the spelling, sorry), the nice lady at the register just gave him these treats at no cost. Lovely people, we will be coming back.

Love this bakery! The fresh pasta is top notch! We frequently stop here to buy a few pounds of fusilli and they never disappoint. Last Christmas, I purchased their panettone that they make themselves and then they place them in decorative sacks and top them with a lovely ornament. Gorgeous! Not to mention, the panettone was so fresh and delicious. A few months ago, I ordered two cakes, one for my husband and one for my son. I ordered a cassata cake with Marzipan on top. This is a Sicilian specialty and it can be very difficult to find a bakery that makes this outside of the North End (Modern). The cassata cake was so moist and ricotta filling was just right. They topped the cake off with marzipan fruit that looked so real. Everyone loved it. The other cake was an ice cream cake and was decorated so nicely. The kids loved it. Will be back very soon.

Beautifully designed and delicious. My family enjoyed this

It harkens to a bygone era of Italian grocers with such authenticity, today it conveys an almost suspiciously genuine quality. It's as though I'm on the set of a movie as local shoppers briskly enter the shop & point to which hanging salamis and hand-shaped pastas they want to take home. Due to a condition (living in Tennessee), I'm only able to have the chicken Parmesan sandwich here about once a year. It's a sandwich I reminisce about with my family and work into conversations with friends and strangers alike. The bread is fresh and chewy, the sauce bright and acidic, and the chicken lightly breaded, perfectly fried, and tender. You can taste each ingredient in every bite. Every element is perfectly executed in its own right, yet somehow made even better in harmony. Recently while devouring my third of the massive sandwich, a little chicken cutlet tumbled to the ground. I'm talking: the GROUND. Outside. Pavement. When no one was looking, I slyly dipped down, picked it up, and ate it. I'm not necessarily proud of this action, but I'm also not ashamed. If you didn't believe the 5 Second Rule before Bricco, let the chicken Parmesan sandwich convert you. Taste and see!

The bakery is cash only and sells a variety of breads: baguettes, ciabatta, sourdough, & olive bread. In addition to the sfogliatelle, they sell muffins, croissants, and focaccia and muffins. The sfogliatelle was pretty good, the pastry was crispy and flaky and the lemon ricotta filling was very rich and creamy. I would've loved to have a couple loaves of the bread, but there was no way I was going to be able to bring it home as I was already maxed out with my carry ons!

The line does move very fast and Gicomo's has expanded to a second sitting area for more space. Ordered the fried calamari platter appetizer and fra diovolo with shrimp and scallops. The former was very very mediocre; it was fresh but the batter seemed soggy and the sauce was watery and weak. However, the fra diovolo was fantastic. Al dente noodles cooked to perfection and the scallops and shrimps were large, juicy, and tender. I'd recommend it for sure; it's one of those dishes you'll definitely be sopping the bread with the leftover sauce (which you should do anyway). Just FYI, it's not spicy at all. Honestly, Giacomo's was a bit disappointing, considering the hype. But I'd still want to come back, and I'm glad I tried it.

One small thing -- maybe it was just me, but the entrance was a little difficult to find at first since it's mainly just a door from the outside. There were also tables seated very close to the entrance, which made it feel a bit cramped and awkward walking in and out. Our waiter was friendly and nice, though the service did feel a little rushed at times. That said, the food was absolutely delicious. We started with the calamari to share, and it was beautifully prepared -- crispy, fresh, and not overly heavy. For my entree, I ordered the seafood pasta and really loved it. The seafood tasted fresh, the pasta was cooked perfectly, and the flavors all came together really well.

Your classic Mom and Pop!…read more Making a choice in the north end for Italian isn't easy but I am a firm believer in small menus=food quality and the sure met those guidelines. For the table we started with the classic Cesare and calamari. The salad was standard but the calamari was perfectly cooked, lightly battered with your classic marinara you can't beat. For entrees we enjoyed the chicken parm with vodka sauce as well as the shrimp scampi. Both delicious but the rigatoni was more over el dente than usual. The bread had great flavor but you can definitely tell it had been sitting out due to the stiffness. The spot was packed and we witnessed first hand if you have no reservations you're out of luck!
