We ate here over New Year's while visiting Boston, and our first experience was excellent--the food was great, which is why we were excited to return during our visit this past weekend. Unfortunately, the customer service during our second visit was a complete disappointment. We arrived around 5:00 p.m., and the restaurant was only about half full. From the start, the service from an older waitress was rude enough that we almost walked out. I had forgotten my reading glasses at home and was having trouble reading the small print on the menu, so I looked at the menu displayed on the wall instead. The waitress suddenly took the menu from our table and repeatedly pointed to the paper menu, insisting that I use it instead. I explained that I couldn't see the small print, and only then did she drop the issue. When our food arrived, it felt like it was simply dropped on the table with no warmth or courtesy. We also witnessed another waitress respond to a customer who was unsure where they were seated by saying loudly, "Do we need to put up directions?!" in a sarcastic and embarrassing tone. It's unfortunate because the food is genuinely very good. However, no meal is worth being treated this way. She got mad and told us that we cant sit if we order at the front. She stormed off. We did not order to-go at the front, we had only asked about normal kitchen timing. She took a long time to come back, which was ridiculous because we didnt have water or anything and we could see her complaining about us. By the time she came back we were running horribly late on time. The pasta was good, but the place smelled like a smoky kitchen. She was curt with us throughout the dinner. Then, these very loud singers came in and started serenading all of us when we were trying to have a relaxing dinner. Like plug your ears loud. They sang a few songs and then went around with a gigantic venmo sign asking for money. I would NEVER have dined here if I knew it was a tourist scam with horrendous service. I was so sad when the South End location closed, as it had become a tradition for a friend and me to visit when she came to visit. Because I've been coming here for so long, it's been disappointing to see the quality decline over the past few years. On my most recent visit, I ordered the seafood pasta for two, which used to be one of my favorite dishes. The sauce was much more tomato-forward and spicy than I remembered. In the past, it was creamier, richer, and had a better balance of flavors that really complemented the seafood. The dish just didn't have the same depth and consistency that made it stand out before. Just to reiterate the staff before you come, it's CASH ONLY (there's an atm at the front of you need some), expect to pay around $30 per entree. Staff is gruff but efficient. The line does move very fast and Gicomo's has expanded to a second sitting area for more space. Ordered the fried calamari platter appetizer and fra diovolo with shrimp and scallops. The former was very very mediocre; it was fresh but the batter seemed soggy and the sauce was watery and weak. However, the fra diovolo was fantastic. Al dente noodles cooked to perfection and the scallops and shrimps were large, juicy, and tender. I'd recommend it for sure; it's one of those dishes you'll definitely be sopping the bread with the leftover sauce (which you should do anyway). Just FYI, it's not spicy at all. Honestly, Giacomo's was a bit disappointing, considering the hype. But I'd still want to come back, and I'm glad I tried it. read more

During one of our last nights in town after running the Boston Marathon we opted to take a casual walk around the North End just to explore and find a place to eat on a whim. We saw the line outside of Giacomo's and decided to join. After a short wait we scored a table upstairs and enjoyed a nice meal. Cozy vibe with an old school feel, good service, and our food was delicious. Reasonably priced, solid portions. I could see why there was a line to get in. Also, be aware they are cash only. While vacationing in Boston recently of course we had to stop in the Little Italy area for food, actually a couple of times. The second lunch in Little Italy we decided on Giacomo's and I'm glad we did. We weren't even completely through the door before we were greeted and seated. This is a small family owned business and in a small building. The building might be small but the food quality was fantastic. Our waitress was fast and friendly. I was having a hard time deciding between some dishes and asked how the bolognese sauce was. She said it was her favorite but what was I thinking. I said i was thinking of the cheese ravioli with the bolognese sauce and she said that was her favorite dish. That made my decision easy. Our food came out piping hot and fast. The runner asked if I wanted parmesan and of course I accepted. The ravioli was homemade and filled with what I think was a smooth creamy mascarpone cheese. The pasta was properly filled and that bolognese sauce was fantastic. It was so full of flavor I couldn't stop eating. I cleared that plate except for some extra sauce. It was fantastic. This has got to be my favorite place for genuine Italian eats in the NE US. Always perfect - the mussels with some bread is my go to, it is just THAT GOOD, I could drink the flavorful broth that accompanies the shellfish. Unfortunately, as soon as I opened the door and walked in at 9:07...the restaurant was empty, there was a server with cash in hand, packing up her purse, staff situated around her, and a chef behind the line just there...standing. The behavior of the server is one I've never experienced, especially having been a sever myself. I get wanting to close and not accepting patrons when it's 5 till close. But it's 9:07 and you all close at 10! She said they were closed. I said, hi we called, yall said you were open until 10. Well no...clearly trying to close early. Then after I said we called, she points to a corner, oh you can sit there. No thank you, you've made us feel unwelcome in under 30 seconds between your words, body language, facial expression, and us interrupting your early close. Disappointed to say the least. Fortunately, we made it to another restaurant a few steps over to enjoy a great meal. Not sure when restaurants started closing an hour almost before closing time. Giacomo's is hands down my favorite restaurant in Boston. I make a point to stop by every time I'm in town, and it never disappoints. Located right in the North End, it's one of the most authentic Italian spots I've ever tried. Last time, we shared a few dishes and everything was amazing: - Fried Calamari: crispy and delicious - Mussels in scampi sauce (white wine, garlic, and olive oil) - Their special half lobster pasta with the Fracomo sauce - a creamy, tomato-lobster sauce with just a little kick. So good. We also had a bottle of Falanghina that paired perfectly with the meal. Huge shoutout to our server Maria, she was fantastic and really made the evening even better. Came here because it had such great ratings and review unfortunately the food was bad. We came here for a later dinner around 9pm and were seated promptly. The bread dropped off at the table to start was stale, it felt like it had been sitting there all day. I got the linguine and clams and there was seasoning on top that was super salty and a few bites were super sandy and inedible. My boyfriend got veal Parmesan and the sauce tasted like straight tomato sauce. The sauce had no seasoning or flavor to it other than tomato and the breading was soggy. Then for dinner I got pasta and seafood in the fracomo sauce (a combo of the spicy fra diavolo sauce and the giacomo creamy tomato sauce). It was really quite good. The pasta was over cooked but the amount of lobster and shellfish included in the generous portion made it well worth it. I do think the spice diminished the flavor of the seafood however. Many of the Italian restaurants on the north end have long lines of people waiting to get in on the weekends and this place is no exception. Fortunately, the line moves quickly here and we were seated within 10 minutes. The restaurant has two, small connecting rooms and the rooms are small and the tables are extremely tight, so you are essentially dining with other patrons. Overall, the staff is fairly friendly. We started with a couple of glasses of wine and a Caesar salad for two. The salad was subpar and very forgettable. We both ordered the chicken Parmesan. Chicken was slightly overcooked, sauce was good. The pasta, which was Penne, was not that great and was fairly starchy tasting. Warning: they only accept cash here. Our server never told us, but said that it was listed on a sign when you walk in the place. Also, a mandatory 20% tip is included in the bill for parties of five or more. A really delicious experience! Decently sized portions for a decent price! We came to fine during a rainy afternoon and were led to the top floor. It felt straight out of a movie with how cozy the quarters were! I had high hopes for this restaurant as there were always long lines outside when I visited Boston. This time, we got lucky and were able to be seated. The staff were very friendly and we were seated immediately. The inside of the restaurant has two separate sections with tables and seems a little crammed. In terms of food, it wasn't as great as I expected it to be as it was mentioned as one of the top rated places to go to when going to Boston for Italian food in the North End. Pasta did not seem like it was made in house and was just mediocre in terms of tasting. I did enjoy the Caprese salad and the fried calamari although there were more deep-fried jalapeño slices, then there were calamari. My wife and I had heard wonderful things from fellow Yelpers about Giacomo's and their food, so we were really looking forward to trying it during our trip. We couldn't land a reservation, so we decided to order delivery to our nearby hotel instead. Unfortunately, it was a massive disappointment from start to finish. Our order included the eggplant rollatini, Caesar salad, veal parmigiana, fettuccine with swordfish, ziti with tuna, and an order of meatballs. The rollatini was just a blob of eggplant with cheese and sauce that tasted just okay. The veal was a total mess--hard as a rock, with soggy breading sitting on top of what looked and tasted like supermarket penne. The swordfish dish was decent in flavor, but again came over the same boxed penne. To make things worse, the meatballs never arrived. When I called to let them know, I was told they couldn't do anything since the delivery was through Uber Eats--even though I ordered directly through the restaurant's own website, which apparently uses Uber Eats without making that clear. I was told a manager would call the next day (since there wasn't one there that night). Spoiler-that call never came. There are way too many excellent options in the North End to waste your time or money on this unimaginative food and lackluster service. Huge letdown. read more

Giacomo's is the kind of place that reminds you why carbs exist and why you should never feel shame about ordering pasta like it's your last meal. The pasta is unreasonably good. The lobster ravioli in particular should come with a warning label because once you eat it, all other ravioli become irrelevant. Perfectly cooked, rich without being heavy, and clearly made by someone who takes pasta very personally. The atmosphere is peak cozy Italian--tight, bustling, warm, and loud enough that you feel like you're eating inside someone's very opinionated Nonna's dining room (in the best way). It's intimate without feeling cramped, which is a miracle considering how popular this place is. And then there's the waitress. Brutally blunt. Zero fluff. Direct to the point. No fake smiles, no rehearsed "Hi my name is--". Just efficient, honest, and somehow deeply comforting. She'll tell you exactly what to order, exactly how it's coming, and exactly why you're wrong if you hesitate. And she's always right.
