We came here with a very large group, I'm talking 30 people. Everyone was very hospitable and provided excellent service given the large group. Unfortunately, many of the dishes, lacked flavor or were just poorly executed. My chicken Parm wasn't crispy, almost as if the oil wasn't hot enough prior to frying it. I think the pizza in general is a skip. The lamb chop was cooked well but underseasoned. However, the beef carpaccio, as well as the burrata salad were both excellent. I would like to give this restaurant another shot when I'm back in Quebec, there's definitely potential with some minor tweaks. read more

Delicious Italian dining located in Le Capitole. After a long busy day, we opted to stay inside our hotel instead of venturing out in the cold inclement weather. And a great choice it was! Located in Le Capitole Hotel, its a dark, intimate modern feel, perfect date night experience. We started with the fresh focaccia bread and oil, an order of the eggplant caponata and the meatballs. The meatballs were cold and still frozen. However, when we mentioned it to our server, she immediately apologized and brought it back to the kitchen. The chef apologized and a new order was brought out. The eggplant has pignoli nuts in it. Very good. For our main: I got the bucatini which was delicious and spicey. My husband had the cacio e pepe. For our mains: Capesante (Scallops) : These roasted U10 scallops with Brussels sprout leaves, saffron and lemon aioli, lobster emulsion, and mujol caviar were mind-blowing! That one bite with the caviar and sauce took me to a different universe . 10/10, easily. Burrata e Coppa Pizza : Tomato sauce, burrata, coppa, arugula, and balsamic reduction. This pizza was fantastic if you're after something more exciting than the usual cheese pie. I just wished for a bit more ooze from the burrata! 9/10. Picatta di Vitello (Veal) : Stacked veal filet scallopini au gratin with fontina, tomato compote, meat glaze, fried sage, market vegetables, and potato pave. We discovered Il Teatro while walking around town. They had the best holiday decorations around and my partner was just in aw and mentioned he would like to eat there, "a place that goes out like that for decorations is worth a visit for the inside." Well it was our 2 year anniversary so a special meal. So; going into this review it was then evening of Jan 1 so the entire staff must have been tired to serve after new years celebrations. For that. Thank You! The entire experience was top notch. The staff was so nice and quickly brought us to our table. Wow. What a beautiful space. The staff were the best and provided the best service. So worth the visit. Yeah, a bit on the pricey side; but worth it. The menu offered plenty of options for any dietary restrictions and food preferences. Restaurant Il Teatro, Beautiful Layout with Disappointing Quality & Management 1-Disappointing communications The surprise was out of the bag regarding my Daughters surprise bday dinner. Thank some restaurant staff who thought to call me an hour before I arrive, while driving to spill the beans. You know that if the restaurant calls you to ask permission to make a $48 cake to serve 2 people, than they already know the answer....NO. At that point the 2 days surprise was busted. It was a petty level of discussion. No attempt was made even at offering anything else. 2- Dinner & Breakfast; Disappointment for a 5 star Hotel Restaurant : Il Teatro The dinner I had the Lobster Bisque Pasta. At a price of $40 you would expect significant lobster considering the rest is just pasta. I was surprised to find only 1/2 of a claw of lobster( most likely canned as it was rubbery and not fresh) This was a disappointment. It was not acceptable. The pasta was sitting in a lobster broth with some other non-identifiable parts. Unacceptable. The dessert we ordered was Tiramisu . The Tiramisu served was premade( like the type you buy at a grocery store). Very average, pre-chilled in a freezer in a glass jar. THIS IS UNACCPETABLE FOR THIS TYPE OF ITALIAN RESTAURANT. And to put more displeasure to this phase of the dinner, no attempt was made by the chef to provide any type of celebratory dessert or finishings to my daughter. Choosing this restaurant was a mistake on multiple levels. They knew the purpose of this dinner and no attempt to rectify the bad communications was done. The dinner was unacceptable and the treatment was even worse. My original request was slept under the carpet. Fortunately we ate at another Italian restaurant the night before that served an amazing Tiramisu, fresh and amazing. The restaurant went out of their way to celebrate my daughter's bday with great quality food and celebratory finishings. The breakfast at Il Teatro was equally disappointing. I had the French Toast. It was a simple stale cinnamon brioche covered with custard sauce with additional sauteed fruits. The following day I switched plates with my daughter who ordered from the child's menu, a series of pancakes. We do this frequently in restaurants so I can taste what my daughter is eating. I was shocked to find that they had served old pancakes to my daughter. Hard as leather. I almost chocked on it. I immediately called the waitress and said " This was terrible" The manager came by and apologized and said "we will make fresh ones for her now".........Really! Your pancakes in a 5 star restaurant are not always fresh? The French toast and the pancakes were not fresh. Pancakes are supposed to be made on the spot and to assume a child will not notice such poor quality with a parent was a miscalculation and sloppiness by the kitchen. At this point I had realized this was not a good restaurant and I would have had a better and fresher breakfast at Tim Horton. Conclusion: Il Teatro sits in a spectacular architectural location and serves average food not worthy of its location or billing. Please note that on the previous night I had a great meal at another Italian restaurant in the city. It was fantastic. Thank you Il Teatro for compromising my daughter " Italian weekend bday celebration" with 3 star food in a 5 star restaurant. read more

On our last evening in Old Quebec I was in the mood for some Italian food. I'd had my fill of French cuisine and needed a change. I had seen one Italian restaurant and curiously they did not have one veal dish on their menu. Found it odd that an Italian restaurant did not serve veal and that's what I was in the mood for. We kept looking as we toured the area. While buying some original artworks I had meet an artist on Rue du Tresor who suggested we try ll Teatro. She had eaten lunch there quite a few times and she knew the food was good. The restaurant was three blocks from my hotel. We walked over and were promptly seated at a nice outdoor table. Our waiter was very attentive making sure we had everything we needed. I started with a Campari and soda and my wife had a glass of white wine. The bread that was put on the table was fresh baked, crunchy on the outside and super soft inside. The olive oil and balsamic vinegar were very good. My wife ordered Veal with mushrooms onions broccoli roasted garlic and spinach pasta with pesto. I ordered the Veal parmigiana spinach pasta with pesto. My test for properly cooked veal is to see if I can cut it with the side of my fork. Well they passed the fork test perfectly cooked with a nice crunchy char around the edge from the cheese. My wife's veal was also perfectly cooked. Both our pastas were perfectly al dente and the pesto was perfect. Looks great from the outside but we were hesitant due to a mediocre rating on Yelp. When our reservation elsewhere was "lost" we had no choice but to try and find somewhere else to eat on a busy Friday night. The hostess was super and found us a nice little table. Our server was sweet and extremely helpful offering great suggestions. We had the tuna and veal tartare as a starter and the lamb for a main course. The desserts were impressive as was my cheese plate to help finish off the wine. Perhaps a little on the expensive side but honestly, it was good value. I had the veal risotto and my wife who wasn't very hungry, or so she said, just had the minestrone soup and a bun. When my dish came she tried my risotto and it was all I could do to save a bit for myself. Good thing it was a huge helping. It was one of the best dishes I've had in a long time. Ordered the pre-fixed menu- soup of the day, entree, and dessert with coffee. Started with the soup du jour of tomato soup; for my entree Osso Bucco with.Red wine reduction sauce, veggies on a bed of polenta; ended with dessert of Tiramisu and cappuccino. We had a late dinner here on Valentine's Day after a great concert at Palais Montcalm. An excellent theatre I might ad. Our show was at 8:00pm and we where still stuffed from our lunch at Pillard so eating before the show was seriously not an option. We actually were looking for a steakhouse but unfortunately finding a steak or any dining close to the theatre after 10:00pm can be quite a challenge as our concierge at the hotel told us, unless you want pub food but on Valentines I wanted something more than that. When he called to check Il Teatro they said their kitchen is open until 11:30. Our concierge highly recommend this for our after concert dinner and made reservations for 10:30. It turned out to be an incredible evening of entertainment, as we walked in after the concert there was an amazing singer performing as she walked through the restaurant both on the main floor and upstairs. I'm not a huge opera fan but her talent couldn't be denied. We had a wonderful table upstairs just over from the bar and our server was excellent. Always ready to bring another drink or entertain our wishes. I started wth a great beer and my wife had the house red and she enjoyed it as we had some bread. I have never considered talking about butter in a review but it truly was amazing with the bread and my beer. So soft and flavourful I've never enjoyed butter like this before. I ordered the beef antipasto with Parmesan and arugula and it was outstanding. I usually refer to arugula as a vile weed but it really worked on this dish. My wife had the mushroom veal Risotto she loved the risotto but wasn't to taken by the veal. I then ordered the smoked pork pasta and it was the best smoked meat I think I ever had. Very sm pieces of pork throughout the dish with an amazing noodle and sauce, it all paired with the beer to end off the day fabulously!! The meals where very filling so we passed on desert but they looked great, maybe next time. This was our last and I feel our most memorable meal in Quebec City and we had some fantastic food at other establishments. It is in my humble opinion a MUST for a dinner destination especially if you are looking for a late night dining experience. read more

The wait staff is very friendly and very helpful and speak perfect English. Food tastes good. We had the pasta dishes, the sauces were addictive. Portions are a bit on the smaller side though even though it's Italian. Be aware. Nice to sit outside and eat. Recommend during the summer especially. Edit: have the chocolate cake. I have come to this resto several times since moving here and the food options are sometimes a hit and miss however now that the menu has been condensed it's much easier to make a good selection (ex. One of my bad selections was an indian inspired grilled chicken breast.... Who orders Indian at an Italian restaurant?!? Lol me!) Some of their must try items: the minestrone soup, the lobster bisque (wanna bathe in it!), the calamari, their caesar salad, the strawberry tiramisu (limited time only), the meatballs, anything with their marinara sauce, and I could go on and on!!! We sat outside for lunch on a beautiful day. There were seven of us, all reporting that our menu selections were delicious. I ordered the lamb knuckle. I'd say you really have to like the flavor of lamb (which I do) to enjoy this meal. The lamb is as strong in taste as I've ever had, it's almost too much, almost gamey. Again I liked the taste but it isn't for the weak of palate. The lamb is accompanied by a wonderful array of vegetables as well as potatoes served in a way I don't recall ever having before. Everything was surrounded by a sort of lamb demi-glace (delicious). The service was good, if a little laid back (typical of almost all QC really). While on holiday in Quebec City, we decided to try this place as we were looking for some good Italian food. I am so happy we decided this place. Everything was perfect from the ambience to the service to the food. The staff was extremely friendly and even the manager who came by to ask if everything was ok. I have traveled around the world and eaten a lot of good food but I can tell you I am the most amazing duck risotto in the world. They have a great wine list which can range from $ 50 per bottle to a few hundreds. The creme brûlée was also perfect, light and not overly sweet. The Tiramisu was great as well. What sets this place apart is the excellent service. While my wife wasn't happy with her dish, the manager personally took it back and modified it to her liking. The manager was nice enough to offer us a free dessert even though that's something we didn't ask for or expect. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to try it. read more

This is the worst restaurant in old Quebec and we would never go here. 1. The menu in English is outdated and the good looking girl at the entrance doesn't tell about it. Unfortunately the items we had liked were discontinued by them and we had to settle for some other items. 2. The waitress forgets about the soup of the day and brings it after long time when we tell her about it and she tells she forgot about it 3. The grilled vegetables along with the salmon have a smoke charcoal smell but when asked about it the waitress tells it's grilled like that only. It's probably a half a mile walk from the hotel Frontenac though The positives : - The waiter was quite helpful and nice to deal with. - free bread with olive oil and balsamic on demand - minestrone soup was delightful and a great bargain - The lobster pasta had some really nice chunks of lobster in it - The shrimp had four of the biggest who succulent trim I've had in a while with a very nice funeral cream sauce that was subtle and tasteful A few negatives: - essentially only one choice of wine by the glass for each wine color. They seem to be pushing bottles of wine that is in glasses. - the bread was served cold - risotto was a little bit heavy - I was seated right next to the cash register station and constantly have the guys chilling like a hind me punching keys as he processed payments for the customers. - Both the pasta and the sauce with the lobster pasta dish was pretty mediocre. - The tiramisu dessert was way too sweet and had a poor quality shortening like flavor to the topping despite its expensive $8 price tag read more

They had a lunch special that included a soup, main, and coffee/dessert, for $18. (Price depends a bit on which main you choose.)
