Nice enough atmosphere, most of what we ordered was disappointing. The octopus starter had a strange texture, almost like it was fake octopus. You know the fake crab made from white fish? Reminded me of that. Plus, the dish had no flavor. My husband had the tagliolini with lobster. Not much flavor here either. I ordered the salad with smoked salmon and zucchini. It was good. We had walked by this restaurant several times and knew that we wanted to try it because it has such great reviews and ratings. We were right. The ambience and food were spot on. We were especially pleased to hear music with no words. It makes dining so nice not to have to compete with vocals while dining. The service was excellent. We enjoyed the Ravioli Burro Salva and Tagliatelle Bolognese. Both dishes were delicious. My husband had Tiramisu for dessert and was very pleased. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. They do add a 10% service fee to your bill but no coperto, which was fine with us. My husband went back on another evening and got the Ravioli Burro Salva as a carry out and really liked it as well. read more

Homey Italian vibes for this restaurant, which is tucked away in a narrow street near the train station. Veal escalopes and mushroom cream (€18) - Only 2 pieces of veal with some veggies on the side, but still a decent dish. The mushroom cream was tasty. Fettuccine alfredo (€14) - Tasty albeit somewhat average quality pasta. The place itself has very casual/lowkey vibes and seems more local than some other places, despite the proximity to the train station. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Overall, solid choice for a lowkey yet decent quality meal with fewer tourists than some other places around Venice. read more

Our Airbnb host recommended this restaurant and it did not disappoint. The streets of Venice are hard to manage for a first timer with no cell reception, but we finally managed to find it. These folks were very kind and accommodating. We ordered the steak, the branzino, gnocchi and a couple aperol spritz. It was all amazing accompanied by a romantic setting next to a canal. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to find a restaurant away from the big squares. read more

The service was very friendly and our server (who I assume is the owner as well) was joking with us all night and gave us great insights into the traditional Italian lifestyle. One thing you'll notice is that everyone takes their time when eating, often sitting for 2-3 hours because it's more focused on drinking, talking, and enjoying your food. We ordered the two appetizers below as well as the cuttle fish ink tagliolini and the lobster tagliolini, both were phenomenal. The Bellini and aperol spritz were both tasty as well and the wine they make is delicious without the price tag of name brand. We ended the night with the tira misu which was also better than anything I've tasted in America. On our way out our server offered us a complimentary lemoncello shot that they make in house, which was way better than the ones we've had from the bottle. We stumbled upon this restaurant on our way back to the hotel. It's tucked away in a little alley, and it could be easily missed. Our server was a gem. He was delightful and always smiling. We ordered Spaghetti with Clams and Ravioli in Garlic Sauce for our first course and Grilled Prawns and Fried Calamari for our second course. All of our dishes were delicious. We got the house red wine - which was good. We enjoyed talking with the chef who then brought us limoncello on the house. Overall, it was our best culinary experience in Venice and the perfect way to cap off our three days in this beautiful city. read more

This place is probably a 3.25-3.33 but had to round down to 3. 2nd dinner of 16 day Italy trip - had reservation at 8:30 - arrived a few minutes early. Was pretty busy but not "every table occupied". Waiting to be served took quite long - probably 15 minutes before they took order for drinks. One guy running around seemed like the owner but another guy (quiet) was involved at least for us. Started with a spritz aperol and she order "aranja" - could've been part orange juice part fanta. Don't think that is what she would have wanted had she known but she drank it nonetheless - definitely out of place for a seafood leaning Italian spot. We split three items: The great - Seafood Spaghetti - this was very tasty, noodles here are definitely more al dente than in the states but didn't mind it. This is a safe item to order - it will hit the spot and many reviews here and on Trip Advisor will say the same. The okay = Bulgatti Salad (four different options for salad named after cars) - the salmon was smoked and highlight but the salad itself - basically iceberg lettuce and definitely not a well designed salad. Not sure you get bang for the buck here even acknowledging you are in Venice. The okay (part 2) - grilled prawns with lemon citrus juice (almost scampi style). "She" said that foreigners will eat the shells but I found it a pain to try and remove the prawn (that were butterflied) from the shells - left probably 25% meat to shell since didn't have the baby forks) - just didn't enjoy eating this since more work than it was worth. Think they shoudl deshell but if that is your thing than ignore this part of my review. By the time you were able to enjoy basically cold. Would not order this again. Tiramisu - meh - had better. Not bad just not a highlight. Didn't stand out. read more

Decent seafood restaurant in venice but extremely slow service and cooking (almost an hour for the food to arrive). The pastas were much better than the risotto. The squid ink was one of the best squid ink pastas we had, but the risotto was quite bland and lacked flavor. Good quiet location though and didn't need a reservation. read more

If I could put 0 stars I would. We made a reservation for dinner, and the waiter was not welcoming despite it being empty inside. The waiter grew impatient when we weren't ready to order, but we didn't think too much about it. However, when he came back a few min later, he insisted that we each had to order at least 2 dishes and a drink. When I didn't order wine, because I don't drink alcohol, he closed my menu and told us that "this is a restaurant and you must have a drink". He then told us that we can leave, so we did. Our table seemed to be the only one that received this very unfriendly service, despite there being other tourists, so I'm unsure where this incredibly hostile behavior came from. Although the location is conveniently next to the train station, I would not come back ever. There are many more affordable places with good seafood, and way better service. read more

We ordered mozzarella bread and a mixed grilled fish platter. We said we would share the food and waited. We waited a long time, then when we asked they said the food had arrived and suddenly both the main course and the starter arrived at the same time! Probably they forgot to serve the starter and brought both at the same time. An unacceptable mistake for such an expensive restaurant, plus the starter was cold from waiting! When we complained they harassed us and finally said they would heat the main course as a favour, but only the plate arrived warmed. We had to eat both dishes cold. Even worse, when we told them, they lied to us and said that we asked them to come at the same time. This is ridiculous because if we had such a request why would we complain. In summary, if you want to eat a dish below the Italian average at a price above the Italian average and be treated badly, you can go here! It is very sad to encounter such establishments in such a gastronomic country. read more

Sure we came to Venice to revisit the canals and bridges and get back on the gondolas. But this time we had another agenda: cuttlefish ink pasta. I order squid ink pasta every chance I get in the restaurants at home, but I didn't learn till lately that Venice is the best place to get them. We, twenty hungry souls, were ready to order it the first restaurant we stumbled into, and luckily our hostel was literally fifty feet away from Il Vagone. We ordered the cuttlefish pasta for dinner; we loved it with relish. The next day at lunch we ordered the same dish at a different, more popular restaurant, and realized Il Vagone's was just better: the sauce more flavorful, and the firmness of the pasta was more al dente. Yep, we had ordered and eaten cuttlefish pasta three times, in a twenty four hour period. Other pasta dishes and seafood platters we ordered were likewise very good, and the fish like sea beam and sea bass had the perfect seasoning. We paired our dishes with the perfect wine based on owner/cook/waiter/cashier's recommendation. He was very friendly and gave us a free bottle of wine each meal. Il Vagone is now our favorite Italian trattoria. read more

Had a great experience at this off the beaten path restaurant. They quickly sat us for a table of seven. Staff was fantastic and the food was wonderful. I had the Tagliatelle with prawns. This is one of the closest places to our apartment and we were voraciously hungry from the train ride, so I took a chance on this place and was pleasantly surprised. The octopus starter was on the rare side. It's that darker, tender Venetian pulpo, different from the olive oil-drizzled chewy squid you get at Greek tavernas, but still tasty. The tagliatelle with prawns and artichokes was spot on, and just the right portion. The table red, custom bottled for Il Vagner with the brand label, was surprisingly robust -- in every sense. And the panda cotta and tiramisu were both home runs. These were capped off by amazing limoncello -- the perfect digestivo for it accompanies. The service was impeccable--with a touch of humor and personality. The owner is great. He's a big, handsome presence in the street, enticing hungry travelers and chatting up the locals. He's also a flatterer, buttering me up by complimenting my Rick Steves phrasebook-level Italian. Little does he know we're just down the street and likely to return either way:) read more

Trattoria Il Vagone is in a small alley near the train station. I liked the decor and ambience of this restaurant. It opens till 11:30pm which is good for a late evening meal. I came here one night at around 11 and the owner and his son were serving the customers in the restaurant. I had a nice chat with them, and ordered the ink pasta and the mixed seafood grill. Rude Waiter!! We made a reservation to this restaurant after seeing all the good reviews but this was probably one of the rudest encounters I've had with a waiter. The first time the waiter came, we asked a few questions about a dish, and after answering them, walked away muttering "you are not ready" under his breath. The second time he came, we asked if there were vegetarian options and he proceeded to tell us that "in order to eat in this restaurant", we each needed to order two courses. I'm not sure if this is some unspoken rule(?) but the ladies next to us didn't have any trouble ordering just one entre. When asked what we wanted to drink, some of us passed on ordering wine and that was when he rudely told us to "get out", that this was a "restaurant" and not some place we could just sit at. I can't seem to understand why the waiter would think we were just sitting around when we were actively trying to order. It felt discriminative as he didn't seem to have the same attitude with the group besides us. read more

The restaurant was close to our hotel so we stopped in. It was busy but they were able to seat us at a few different tables. We ordered pretty quickly but it took well over an hour to get our food. When we finally got our dinners they clearly forgot one of them and had to make it on the fly -- she wasn't even served until after we were finished. The food was good but our shrimp was over cooked. The serving staff was clearly rushed and the tables with reservations were served well before we were even though we had been waiting longer. We also ordered two take away meals and it took at least 30 minutes for two simple pasta dishes. Definitely go somewhere else if you want a good dinner and good service. read more

We visited this restaurant when we were in Venice on our last night of vacation back in May of 2018. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, but the staff was what made it so special. Everyone was so friendly. One of the gentlemen gave us a complimentary small bottle of wine to bring back to the states with us to open on a special occasion. Truth be told the airplane food we had earlier in the day might have influenced our opinion, but nonetheless we had a wonderful time.
