Pro tip for your first time in Venice: check out restaurants down side streets or alleyways. They're much better than the ones in popular spots as they're much less crowded, and you can dine at your own pace. It was ~ 40°F outside and windy, so we popped in this restaurant and felt so warm and comfy inside :) The menu had a long of great options, and the seafood risotto was verrrrry tempting (must order for 2x people). We ended up ordering the paccheri and linguini with seafood to share. The linguini was so good and the serving of seafood was so generous that I was starting to run out of linguini (unheard of, really!). The artichoke mixed in the paccheri really elevated the flavors of the tomatoes and shrimp. I think we have a new love for cherry tomatoes, raw or sautéed. We finished our late lunch with a macchiato each, and the espresso was strong and flavorful. I might be a coffee addict and I'm not afraid to show it! Aside from the food, the interior was tastefully decorated with a coffee bar at the entrance, and an extremely clean bathroom with a separate sink area. There's also free WiFi, plus lighting or USB-C chargers in the wall just makes this a great place to leisurely have lunch and coffee. Our waiter was very kind and we didn't feel rushed or ignored. As expected when dining in, there is a cover charge, which was only €2.50 per person which is not bad for the location near Rialto Bridge, and is much lower than some places at St. Mark's Square. I encourage everyone to do their due diligence when considering the reviews for Trattoria Rialto Novo. We went to this restaurant based on its great reviews. The restaurant is set on a lovely, quiet terrace in the heart of an otherwise crowded, touristy area. Our food was delicious, and the panna cotta was amazing! I had the pistachio pesto orecchiette with scallops -- very flavorful, although few scallops. While the other waiter was very friendly, the one serving us was disappointingly inattentive and even dismissive. I will always choose to take my repeat business to a place where the people who feed me also look me in the eyes and see that I matter just as much as the people who wear expensive clothes and carry designer handbags. One additional caution: the restaurant removed my review twice and TheFork restored it both times. read more

Arrived at 7pm to a completely empty restaurant which always makes me nervous. Apparently the entire restaurant was "reserved". The two gentlemen working the front were rude, short and I should've taken this as a sign of what's to come... Ordered a glass of red wine, which was more of a wine tasting than a glass. Tried to order a cocktail but was told I should just drink an Aperol Spritz . That's when I knew there was some anti-American sentiment as I've been told anytime you order an Aperol spritz you get judged super hard. I decided to take the risk anyways and sit and order my entree Ordered a second glass of red wine with a bit at the bottom and the waiter took the same glass with what was at the bottom and brought it back not even filled to the "line". Overall very good, however, listen to their recommendations with a grain of salt (details below). We wanted to order a $30 branzino, but they persuaded us into ordering a different branzino dish, as the other one was "unavailable." Whatever, no biggie. The rest of the food was good, perhaps some of the best we had in Venice. Definitely order the crab dishes. That being said, the carbonara was somewhat runny, so I wouldn't order that again. Everything was great, and the fish was good, HOWEVER, beware. The price was $70 for the fish! It's because they require 2 servings. Although it was good, it wasn't $70 good. The guys are all a bit formal at first but after the waiter took the napkin and hung it around my husband like a bib when he got the lobster, well it just went up from there. They're hilarious and very accomodating. The sea bass was absolutely to DIE FOR! Best we've ever had. Our friends with us didn't care too much for pasta but after the spaghetti bolognese and lasagne, they're sold. Ate more when we arrived for dinner as well. Eating at Trattoria Rialto Novo was an amazing experience. We ate there every night we were in Venice because the first night was so wonderful. We ate at several different places while traveling around Italy and Venice, and this was by far the best and felt like a "true Italian eating experience" instead of just... eating in Italy. Tani and the other staff were fantastic and anticipated our needs. They brought out an ash tray for my cigar and improvised a vase for the roses we got on the Rialto Bridge, without us saying a thing. We briefly looked at the menu, Tani then described the specials, we said it all sounded wonderful, and then he just took care of us, like family. If you want to have a special dining experience, ask them what the specials are and what they recommend that night. We were never disappointed. When they realized that I was the one in the group who was a wine snob, they brought me to their wine selection and talked about which wines they would recommend with the food they would be serving us that night. They had great recommendations and the wines paired beautifully with the food we ate. There was a little bit of a language barrier - we know NO Italian - but they did a great job of communicating in English and they had a wonderful sense of humor through everything. We found this restaurant by chance on our first night in Italy and Venice. Down a random, quiet, side street in Venice near the Rialto Bridge, it has outdoor seating in a quiet courtyard. We intended to just get a few small things, but somehow ordered a Tomahawk steak for the 4 of us to share, along with some other pastas, and it was totally worth it. At this point we knew we had to come back to this restaurant on our very last night in Italy, after visiting a few other towns, and we did. The last night was just about a repeat of the first night. We basically told them everything we had had there was delicious and what did they recommend tonight? Again, couldn't tell you what all we were served that night, but it was all delicious. We did have a fresh caught sea bass cooked in a mound of salt that was served table side. That fish basically fell apart when he served it - it was so good! This place is a somewhat hidden gem and I'd give more than 5 stars if I could. I would suggest making reservation. We happened to get lucky each night and get there at the perfect time to get a table, but it definitely got busier as the night went on. The staff was fine to let us hang out and enjoy a leisurely meal, but there were other diners who seemed to have more of a time crunch and they were happily accommodated as well. Looking for dinner and this area is bit quiet. Wasn't sure and willing to give it a try. Fresh Seabass is about 25euro x2 people. My hubby didn't want to pay so much so he chose the farmed grill Seabass for 17 euro. He loved it and finished everything. He would give the fish 5 stars. We ordered spiny crab appetizer for fun because It was our 1st time seeing it. Not alot of meat. Interesting. Decent. I ordered special ravioli with fresh caught sea bass inside. Pretty flavored. Quite by chance we stumbled past Trattoria Rialto Novo and were totally taken aback by the genuinely friendly welcome. Our wait person, knowing we were foreigners, gave us extra attention by suggesting we try the daily special consisting of freshly made pasta with seafood, choose a wine to complement our dinner and in addition helped us to make local telephone calls we were unable to do on our own. On our last day in Venice we dined once again at Trattoria Rialto Novo. Upon entering we were greeted as family. Tane , our server, suggested we put away the menus (after checking with the chef) and try a Sea Bass and Flounder (fresh from the market) platter to share. Table service included the expert skinning and boning as well as plating with the vegetable side. Exquisite presentation, delicious, and expertly paired with his wine suggestion. Was not disappointed, was actually left excited about our choice. We were sat outside under some fans which was nice since the restaurant is in a cute little plaza (great for people watching). We ordered a the spaghetti allá Bolognese, a Caprese salad, and a mixed salad. All was delicious and were the perfect portion. We wrapped up the meal with an espresso and a cappuccino which were served with the delicious S shaped biscottis that are popular here. This place is off the beaten track. It has outside seating which is pleasant but not necessarily in the most attractive location. They have two tourist menus. The are both reasonably priced. One for 15Eu which has a pasta choice and either steak, chicken or liver and a seafood menu which is 20Eu for a fish pasta and a second course which is also fish. It also comes with a desert. The pasta dishes are meant for first courses so they are a bit smaller if you want one for a meal. My biggest complaint was we ordered a bottle of Rose and asked if if it was very cold. We were assured it was. It arrived in a bucket and we were told to wait before the waiter would open it. After pouring our first glass it was apparent it was still warm. What a hidden gem. Tucked away on secluded campo Rialto novo, it was a great break from the maddening crowds of Venice. I tried the daily special, fresh vegetable zuppa and steak with grilled vegetables. Soup was a delicious broth with fresh vegetables in a clear broth, not a typical tomato base. The steak, while hardly considered an American steak, especially by Texan standards, was well seasoned and tender. My daughter has a ricotta and spinach filled mezzaluna paste which was exceptionally creamy and obviously homemade pasta. Wine in old served in in bottles or half bottles.
