We were so excited when this location was opening - just blocks from our house. We have always loved the 16th Street Mall location. The reason we only give one star - EVERY single time we have come here (which isn't often because of this reason) the bartenders have been horrible. Major attitude from ALL of them. They act like they are annoyed to get you a drink...basically do their jobs. They are never smiling and just nasty people. A restaurant could have 5 star food, but if your staff (and here it's only been the bartenders) are miserable people then we will just go up the street to Pinche Tacos. read more

Ok ok great food, and a fun atmosphere. The bloody Mary's are not for my liking! There is a ton of salsa in them very odd and taste nasty. Also I do not like sipping up salsa it's gross! I hadn't been to Illegal Pete's in nearly a year and stopped in today for lunch with a friend. My dad used to always bring home burritos from their Boulder location, when I was in high school and they are much better than Qdoba or Chipotle. Although the location on the 16th Street Mall is my favorite location, this one wasn't bad either. Aside from the woman who took my order making me feel old and asking me if I was someone named "Jake's" mom (getting old sucks), the service was on point and the food was pretty bomb. I went with the chicken tacos. There are so many toppings you can add and I got a little nuts with that (cheese, sour cream, 2 salsa, guac, olives, onions, cilantro, lettuce, etc). Very good. There are also 3 different types of tortilla options: flour, wheat, and corn. I went for flour and corn but kind of wish I had also tried the wheat, for good measure. They are in an old wafflehouse and have a pretty neat patio for people watching and there is also a full bar. I am really glad that this place was suggested today! Also, there is a parking lot in the back, which I believe is free but I didn't know and parked on the street. read more

I love Illegal Petes! I am a Denver native and have been eating here at least once a week for over 4 years. However just moving right by the Colfax location I must say, F*CK this location!!! Hands down awful, portions were garbage, cross contaminating food all day! I mentioned to the lady there is a bunch of cheese in the guacamole. The lady giggled and said no extra charge. Yo lady, f*ck you I have a food allergy and can't eat dairy! I'm so glad you think you're funny because if I ate that I would have to call into work the next day. I told her that she didn't seem to give any f*cks #foodpoisoning. I will never go back to this location in fear of food poisoning. Came here for dinner tonight with my boyfriend and brother. It wasn't too busy, only stood in line for a couple of minutes. As we finally got to the counter, the first female employee with blue hair greeted us with "what do you want?". my brother told her he wanted the "beer battered fish" and it was pretty loud so they went back and forth three or four times before she understood him with a few incredibly rude "what?? Frustrated that he wanted the fish because it took time behind the counter, she gave him a nasty look. Similar experiences occurred between us with my boyfriend and I. The next employee, who seemed to be the manager seemed frustrated as he helped us with the next ingredients. We were then passed down to the counter where another customer was paying. The burrito they made him was falling apart everywhere as they tried wrapping it. He was bringing it home for someone else and asked if they'd kindly remake it. One employee chucked his tortilla in the trash and the other two grunted as the manager rudely told him to go back to the beginning of the counter. The employee behind the cash register went to check us out and was super rude to the three of us. My boyfriend was trying to ask for cups for the three of us as the cashier ignored him to turn to another employee to complain about the man who asked to have his burrito redone. He didn't even let my boyfriend take enough cups for the three of us. He only let him have one. Got back to the table with the food... it was cold, we were all three missing various ingredients in our meals and the chicken was incredibly fatty. Super disappointed. read more

Every time I go in here the staff is extremely rude and the food is inauthentic. Go across the street and get the carnitas tacos from Torta Grill, they are much tastier (and cheaper) and you are supporting a sweet family running a local business, as opposed to a chain restaurant with a snobby hipster staff. read more

Let me start with saying I am a Qdoba fanatic, but I had heard a lot of good things about Illegal Pete's and thought I'd give it a go. Really like the building design and outdoor seating, with above heating. Looked like there was a decent size parking lot out back, but didn't check it out to see if it was actually for them. People behind the counter were very friendly. I ended up going with Qdoba-standard: chicken burrito. The process is very similar, almost identical, however I was most impressed by them mixing up the ingredients at the end, so every bite would be a little bit of everything (as opposed to a whole mouthful of just rice). Grabbed a delicious (and pretty cheaply priced) margarita at the bar, from a very friendly bartender, and snagged a booth on the first floor. I agree with other reviews, in that what this place has going for them, is the feeling of wanting to stay, hang out and have a drink versus eating and immediately leaving. Didn't make my way upstairs, but seemed to have a good size space upstairs as well. As for the food, some of the chicken had hard parts, which I couldn't chew. The rest of it was just fine, but nothing I was really impressed by. I would come back again with friends, as it has more of that kind of atmosphere, but might save my burrito purchases for elsewhere. read more

Had a nice fish taco meal my first time to Denver. Easy to find off of a major street, and parking was a bit tight, but within 5-7 minutes found a spot. Most of the folks were sitting in the outdoor patio or at the bar, but we had a nice quiet spot in one of the booths. Very nice easy-going atmosphere, as it didn't have a cheap fast-food atmosphere, nor was it have a heavy bar feel. I was told that the fish tacos do take a bit of time, but glad to hear that I was getting a freshly prepared meal. One minor complaint would be that the Sriracha sauce bottles had dried up crust at the top, so I passed on those. The tacos were pretty darn good. Very light breading, and nice big chunks of meat. I like rice with fish tacos, and the brown rice served was a bit different but still okay. I had a slightly inferior experience at a different Illegal Pete's location, so I don't know if it's hit or miss all the time, or if this Illegal Pete's has same good quality always. read more
