The best burritos near DU hands down. Chipotle doesn't hold a flame to Illegal Pete's. It has a good atmosphere and great food at a good price. Their burritos are awesome, and something I sorely miss in Los Angeles. I get the same thing every time and it never disappoints This is defnitely not Mexican food, but neither is Chipotle, instead it's a just a good burrito joint. I haven't been to the bar here so I won't talk about the atmosphere at the bar but I like the fact i can sit down and enjoy my burrito while watching the game. I love hitting this place up after a basketball game as it is usually moderately busy with some players and fans mixed together enjoying burritos. If you are looking for a Burrito skip Chipotle and head to IPs. UPDATE: I've been going to Illegal Pete's a lot more recently since they serve until Midnight every night and I must say the staff are excellent. It's one the biggest assets of this location is that the staff are always cool to talk to and make you want to be there. Love Illegal Pete's! Contrary to other reviews, I've never found the staff unfriendly. Actually, they have gone out of their way to be friendly, helpful and creative. Sure, they may not be the corporate, mindless stiffs you see at the chains. These folks actually have personality. The salads are a perfect size, chicken is very tasty, and the creamy and tangy chipotle ranch dressing is also yummy with chips. Once I wanted cheese melted on a tortilla and then made into a taco (based on tacos I used to get in another city) and the server enthusiastically made it happen. The portions are huge, and it was cheap for the size. My husband loved his burrito, I love the chips and queso. I also got a fish taco and steak fajita bowl. Unfortunately, I felt the bowl was pretty bland and rather have had Chipotle. The fish taco was really good, but they give only one strip of fish that wasn't that big. read more

I want so, so badly to love Illegal Pete's, I really do. But every time, every. single. time. Something turns me off about the place. This time it was completely uncooked rice, like, rice that was straight up crunchy. I dunno, I feel like that's something that should be fairly automated by now. I love the atmosphere, I love the number of menu options, but I'm just not a fan of hard rice. It may be somebody else's cup o'tea but it just ain't my bag baby. Wow... where do I start? With the first class cuisine? With the expertly crafted cocktails? With the good vibes? There's too much to say, but I will try to be as concise as possible. The food: stellar. Prepared by hip locals, real coloradians ready to slap their meat right smack dab in the middle of your taco shell. The football: 6 TVs for any and every team to light up the screen. Another 5 star review! Every winter when the snow falls and we head to Keystone or Breck we always stop at illegal petes! Its like someone took Chipotle's idea and made an even more fresh original mexican joint, any place that has queso sauce as good as I.P.'s is number 1 in my books. Illegal Petes's is yummy and has good fresh ingredients, and a lot of possible different combinations. They also have really good breakfast which is my fav! I would recommend going here over the chipoltle a block away because the ingredients are much fresher, taste less salty, and there are more choices. In fact i ate at chipoltle and illegal petes today and got the exact same thing(burrito bowl with rice, black beans, chicken, lettuce, cheese, and red chili) and it was much better tasting at illegal petes. The price at illegal petes was 7.33 compared to 6.75 at chipoltle but i would definitely say that the extra 58 cents is worth it and illegal petes includes a free tortilla or chips on the side with their burritio bowls. The only downside to illegal petes is that sometimes the hipsters who work their are a little grumpy, but again i would say its worth it. read more

While completing my Masters at DU, I spent many a lunchtime there. I really love their burritos, and find their Pork Green Chili almost as good as I get at my folks in New Mexico- It's the best I've found here in Colorado. While I agree with a few other posters about the cost, I find the staff always friendly, the food awesome, and the environment enjoyable; so, 'll definitely keep going back. read more

I came in on Thursday evening to grab some food to go. I've only been here two or three times and haven't been in there for some time. The girl working the food bar wasn't very patient with my girlfriend or myself. She seemed not too pumped to be helping us, and acted pretty bitchy when we weren't ordering up to her standards. And she put a Huge amount of sour cream on both of our "bowls" that we ordered..The food would have been pretty good if she wouldn't have added so much sour cream. Staff is friendly and makes the line go by quick! Food is kinda pricey but that's to be expected from Mexican food that's not Taco Bell quality. The restaurant is clean except for the restrooms, in my case the men's, which are downright hideous from (what I assume) the drunk college kids on late weekend nights. I spent most of my undergrad haunting the Pete's on the Hill near the University of Colorado campus, and have fond memories of my time spent there. After moving to Denver to attend DU, this is a suitable substitute, providing the amazing food, atmosphere, and friendly, vibrant bar life that I so crave. Love the food here, their chicken is the best. My mainstays are the chicken quesadilla with jalapeno and onion added, or more recently I've branched out to their chicken nachos, which are incredible. The cook got angry for having to remake an order and when I offered to pay for the food that was made incorrectly I was told I couldn't and the cashier threw it away right in front of me... why waste the food when I was going to pay for it and take it??? I'm a regular. I love Illegal Petes, specifically the Evans/ DU location. Usually order the same thing every time chips n queso and a simple chicken burrito! Never had a bad experience. Today, 11/9 my friend says try the fish tacos. I'm skeptical because I like fish but I don't love it. I ask the front guy what he thinks of the fish tacos and he says he loves it but gets em in a bowl. So I say "yeah, gimme dat". Upon delivery a server give me my food and gives me some limes to go with, says some people like it some people don't. I do it up, scarf down the whole thing, hop back in line and order another. Horrible and slow service. Line was moving backwards it felt. We had to ask them to turn on the Broncos game, and the bartender turned it on one of 6 TVs and left horse racing on the other 5 TVs, and no it wasn't the Kentucky Derby.
