This is a great place for a quick bite if around UoA campus. Very popular student hangout. This is a counter service style. Service was quick and staff very polite. I ordered burrito bowl with fish, at 9:30pm on Saturday night, place was packed but service was quick. Had to cook fish just for me, and gave me a very generous amount. Price was okay for location, and will definitely be back. My daughter (student at UoA) eats there 1or2 times a week. This is competitor for Chipotle (similar menu) on opposite side of street, but I personally would take Illegal Pete's any day. read more

They literally copied chipotle. I looked it up chipotle opened in Denver in 1993 and illegal Petes opened in Boulder in 1995 so yes they did copy chipotle. But illegal Petes is so much better. It's cheaper than chipotle, they have a bar upstairs and downstairs also they have a lot of tvs so you can watch sports games when they're on. Overall I think illegal Petes really appeals to a college atmosphere over Chipotle. And I mean to be honest illegal Petes beats chipotle cause I'd rather not get E. Coli. read more

Love illegal petes! Their breakfast bowls and burritos are awesome. The chili sauce is so good. Decent price. The lunch atmosphere is fun the loft upstairs is pretty cool. Great food and fun atmosphere. As a U of A student, this is a great place to grab a drink and watch a game.

It's a lot like Chipotle's except it has a bar and sports TV's and there are more options for add-ins and for basic choices (e.g., they have quesadillas). I was very impressed by how they renovated the old house and added the crazy contemporary structure in the back. Very tasteful. I had a pork carnitas burrito and sorry to say, it was not. Not very tasteful, I mean. Same category of atrocious tortillas as at Chipotle's. Those things could be manufactured in larger sizes and sold as trampolines. read more

If you are in the area and don't mind the loud atmosphere, this is a great place for a vegan burrito/bowl/nachos. The ingredients are healthy and the food is made quickly. They have lots of veggies and beans to choose from including brown rice. The chips are not great, definitely not made there. read more

This place is basically just a better quality chipotle, which is a good thing. The burritos are 10 times better and their queso is some of the best I've had anywhere. They also offer a much larger variety of burritos. I think it's a little more expensive but I believe it's worth it because of how much better the food is. read more

Absolutely bogus. There was a group of 10 of us and we came from all over the country to attend a month long training in Tucson and we wanted to visit the bar scene. We handed them our ids and they all extremely scrutinized us, which was not a big deal but they were extremely rude to us. The bouncer was like "I don't make mistakes with IDs." There's a difference between really examining an ID and being rude about it - he was interviewing us saying he wouldn't give us tags, etc. extremely unprofessional. This was almost a full race issue - Our group of 10 consisted of white, Hispanic, Asian-Pacific Islander, and African American-black. When our black coworker came to the front with an out of state ID, the bouncer immediately took away his ID and told him to leave. We asked politely if they could call the police station to send a patrol person to examine the ID and the bouncer said we had to call, but we told him that he had literally just stole our ID. When he called the police he stepped away from us and 5 minutes later there were 2 police on bikes and 1 in a Chevy Tahoe all to examine an out of state ID. Overall, after wasting 15 minutes and extremely unprofessional staff, we got our ID left. The ultimate cherry on top was at the end the bouncer said "ok, your ID checks out." There was not much that I liked about my experience here. First, it took a long time to get my drink order taken, because the bartender was neglecting a whole half of the bar. Second, the food is not that great, especially if you know what authentic Mexican food tastes like. Third, the music was way too loud. If you are not a college student, don't even bother coming here. We happened to find ourselves in Tuscon on a weekend when the Denver Broncos were playing and we wanted to go watch the game in a sports bar setting. I Googled "Where to watch the Denver Broncos in Tucson" and a group of diehard fans have dubbed this spot the Broncos bar and have the entire top floor reserved for Bronco fans only. This group even had a raffle fundraiser and gave away Broncos stuff. The service was very good with the bartender making me the kind of margarita's I like with fresh lime juice and agave versus mix, the hubby had different types of beer.. that always makes him happy. The only negative was the food. It's just really not very good and you have to go wait in line and order and when it comes you wish you'd waited to go to another fabulous Mexican restaurant in Tucson instead of this place. It's too bad because the location and staff are really good. The seating upstairs isn't very comfortable either. Just metal bar stools so sitting and watching a whole game on those hard seats wasn't too pleasant. If you need to see the Broncos play this is a fun spot but for Mexican food you should really go to one of the dozens of other places in the area. read more

Ok so everyone knows petes is like wonderful but I'm literally amazed by what happened when I went in last week. So I got this crazy dank chicken bowl with chips and as I'm leaving I accidentally drop my chips and they spill everywhere. So I'm like embarrassed and sad bc I no longer had chips but then this employee with long hair I think his name was Zack came and helped me and got me new chips!!!! AND THEN I KID YOU NOT I TAKE FUVE STEPS OURSIDE AND DROP MY GOD DAMN CHIPS AGAIN AND THEY STILL GAVE ME KNEW CHIPS!!! Ok, so everyone always told me and my friend to check this place out especially because I only live a few blocks away. The food was REALLY good (I got the steak tacos) and the staff that was making it was super nice. The PROBLEM we had was when we wanted to grab a drink so we sat at the end of the bar so we could watch the games and get a drink while we ate. Being a bartender for several years, the downstairs bartender was one of the WORST I have ever seen. We sat there patiently for a few minutes while he made a couple people drinks. We soon realized that about 10 min had gone by and he did not even acknowledge our presence. NOT because he was busy, no, he was too enthralled chatting it up with his friends at the other end of the bar. If I wanted to try and get a drink at a frat house by a bunch of bros I would time travel back to freshman year. After 15 min of sitting there and our food cold we had enough and went upstairs. The upstairs bartender was really nice and she apologized for how we were treated by her coworker. Hilariously enough the couple that were sitting next to us downstairs followed suite and ended up also coming upstairs because they could not get service. I'm sure I will give it another try but not exactly the greatest experience after hearing all the hype. read more

This place lacks originality. It has all the similar traits as their competitor across the street. Besides queso, fish tacos and a full bar, Food was nothing to brag about. Had a steak burrito, it was ok, no good flavor really and hottest salsa wasn't hot. Being in Tucson Arizona, you're in the Mecca of great Mexican food. Doesn't compare. If you're looking for great Mexican food you're better off Going down to south side, BK on first and grant, street tacos or their competitor Chipotle across the street. But I will give the owner props for purchasing the old Franklin building and opening it up on University. It is indeed a drunk college kids dream, full bar and burritos all in one.
