My first visit went well. The customer service was very friendly and prompt. I ordered crispy corn ground beef tacos-- Yum i must say! the refried beans were good and seemed homemade. Wasn't a huge fan of the rice, kinda tasted like a hint of musty water but the tacos and beans were still worth the visit... infact, i've had them at other local places near and wasn't a fan at all. 1st time dining here & only a couple at the bar & a trio sitting at a table midday, midweek. Clean interior, no loud music, was greeted quickly by The Nana herself & sat at the bar. Ordered the Chile Relleno combo with a beef taco & everything was great, excellent mole sauce & scratch kitchen home cooking taste. Pretty nice selection of slightly off the beaten path craft beers on tap, not a huge selection, but just diverse enough for people who enjoy different styles of beer, not just pils & lagers. Noticed they had some unusual tequila selections, but upon asking, they were collector bottles the owner was displaying, several were signed by the distiller. I was able find an additive-free artesenal brand (most were) & Javier joined me for a nice chat & offered me a free shot of a very fine tequila after we started talking tequila's & only after that did I realize he was Nana's son & part owner. Everything was great from my 1st visit, all of the staff were enthusiastic, friendly & professional while being chill. First of all we were not welcomed when we arrived and weren't advised to seat yourself. The 2 waitresses were very unfriendly and never smiled. I ordered the patty tacos and they were very bland no flavor at all. My boyfriend ordered the chicken taco salad and that too was very bland. We had to drown the food in salsa to make it edible. This is a place where if you're not a regular you shouldn't come to this restaurant. The waitress never came to see if we needed anything. Visiting Tucson with Lady Matilda, we are staying at a place near the airport. The airport is about 40 minutes from this location, but we were told it was worth the drive. It was. Lady Matilda wanted good, authentic Mexican tamales, and our concierge put this at the top of her list. The restaurant is a simple, open layout with a great-looking bar at the back. It's in a strip mall with a congested parking lot. A few great points: we got to the place just as a party of 20 was seated. The wait staff did not neglect the 2-seaters who came in after and, in fact, made sure they were set to go before focusing their resources on the big party. Wow. That rarely happens. We had a liberal serving of chips and salsa and bean dip for the table, and both dips were excellent. The salsa had an odd mix where I think they wanted a steady but savory burn, but didn't quite combine the spices correctly, leading to one chip tasting sweet, another tangy, and one that felt like I set my sinuses on fire. The bean dip, however, was excellent. Lady Matilda's tamales made her so happy. She'd been waiting for this experience for months since we realized we were headed to Tucson. The platter was more than a meal. I had the best chicken quesadillas ever. We shared our experience with the people we came to Tucson to meet, and they told us that it was their favorite Mexican spot in the city. It was their little secret because the place is small and can get loud and crowded. I hope I don't ruin their fun by sharing this but Nana deserves the business. read more

If you're anywhere in the Tucson area, this place is worth your time and palette. It's like Cheers with plenty of barstools, tables, friendly staff and the neighborhood locals who apparently gather every afternoon for oh so delicious Mexican food and drinks. (Perfect margaritas.) The food. I can only describe it as the future spoiler for my favorite TexMex restaurants back home. Nana greets everyone who walks in the door, if she's not in the kitchen. She talks with us. She's not in a hurry . When it's time for her to get back into the kitchen, a sweet lady gently signals her that she's needed to finish up the cooking. Am I at home??? Nana's Kitchen is coming up on 16 years on Tucson's northwest side. My husband and I have been frequenting this establishment since day 1. The atmosphere upon entering feels like home. Matco and Javier, the owners, are on hand to greet you with a smile, hug, and friendly conversation. Nana often comes out of the kitchen to say, "Hello." The service is spot on, and the food is delicious and authentic. We've tried everything on the menu, which is extensive. The bar is well stocked and manned by Marco. I wish that I could remember the name of the burro that I couldn't pronounce. The beef was unlike anything I'd had before. Very well seasoned, a healthy portion with rice and beans. The salsa was spicy, yet balanced with other flavors that didn't distract from the burro. Hand made tortilla chips and salsa are always a welcome sight at a sit down restaurant. The owner came by and personally greeted us, which was great! They charge for chips and salsa, which is a deterring factor, but do offer free refills so would consider paying for chips and salsa if we were with a bigger group. We ordered cheese enchiladas and a combo plate. The entrees were delicious and very authentic! The ambience was a little rowdy, especially since we had our baby with us. There were a group of older adults very intoxicated at the bar area who were loud and obnoxious. The owner was kind enough to come by and apologize on their behalf, but it definitely affected our overall experience. Sincerely love going to this neighborhood spot. The family that owns this restaurant clearly puts their heart into it. The cheese crisp with the chiles hits the spot (pair it with a margarita). My go to order is typically the deshebrada chimi; the meat is perfect, the chimi is never greasy and accompanying refried beans are spot on. Visiting from out of town and just tried Nana's kitchen. Service was slow and not friendly. Nine dollar guac tasted ....OFF. I ordered two tamales. Rather than bring me à la carte they bought me a plate which was $18. The beans were so salty I could not eat them. The corn tamales something tasted off. I took one bite husband took one bite. Neither one of us could eat anymore. After my husband had eaten his entire plate of fajitas - which were just OK ....they asked us if we wanted a box for my meal. Had never checked on us until that point. I told them no - shared that my meal was bad. Luckily, they refunded our meal. my husband's fajitas, small guac and a Coke were still $38. Came here last minute as we were in the area and needed lunch. Our son wanted quesadilla and I wanted barria tacos. If I had know the quesadilla was going to be this huge, I think we could have split it as we had so much leftover. Birria tacos had good flavor but the taco shell was not crispy at all. It came out soggy which was disappointing. The broth was good. I would definitely come back and try other items on the menu as we all thought the quesadilla was excellent! When we came in, there were two waitresses but only two tables had any customers. The bar was 1/2 full. With that, it took what felt like forever to get our order taken, but actually maybe 10 minutes. Then another 15 minutes to actually get served. No refills offered until we were about to get up, and pay our bill. Then the waitress got a boost on energy, lol. Tip hopefull? The food was way too salty at that, and rather than taking a mostly full plate home, we left it on the table. By far the worst meal and restaurant experience we've had in a long time. The staff seemed only interested in the bar customers and a tip. Won't be back, neither should you. read more

Well my wife bought the sweet deals and we decided to stop by here. They had a live band playing which made it fun to watch. Strictly from a food standpoint, we sat at the table for a bit until the bartender waived someone over to help us. My wife ordered the Taquitos and I ordered the fajitas. My wife said her food was really good. My food well, hmm. I couldn't cut through my red and green peppers and my steak was well done. Overall our server took our order, never came back until it was bill time. Others brought our food and refilled our drinks. Maybe we had an off day. Food ok, service slow. We tried Nana's on Thursday the 16th. It was pretty good. First know the service was really good. Marco, the server, and if heard correctly, was the owners son. If I miss heard, please forgive me. We had somewhat of a really good experience with everything else. My sister ordered the Enchilada Plato Cheese with green sauce. It had a really great flavor and had quite generous portions. She really loved the sauce, and everything was hot, I tasted it, and it was very good. My brother had the Combination Plate. He enjoyed everything about it except the cheese enchilada. It didn't have any cheese in the cheese enchilada. Other than that, he loved the food. I had the Nana Special Tostadas. It had a terrific taste, but it was cold, including the rice. We had ordered the Legendario Silver margaritas. They were pretty good but could have had a more balanced tequila/triple sec/lime juice mix. It was close, but it still had more of a triple sec/lime mix than some tequila flavor. As I have expressed before, margaritas need more of a balanced flavor, less triple sec/lime taste, and a little more tequila to balance the overwhelming triple sec flavor. A bit light on the tequila and a little less triple sec/lime flavor. Again, the flavor was good, and the service was good, but it can stand some improvements, as mentioned earlier. A discount for the cold food and missing cheese in the cheese enchilada should have been included, as normally happens with all other places I have eaten. We will try Nana's again, and hopefully, all will improve. read more

I came in around 20 minutes until 7pm, which is 2 whole hours before close but don't quote Nana on that because it's often that they close hours early for no reason. As soon as I entered the atmosphere was immediately negative, very loud, no host stand nor a sign telling you to sit yourself. A lady who unfortunately became our server didn't even walk up to the front to tell us where to sit and started pointing at a table expecting us to understand her. When we didn't move she started to approach and finally used her voice to tell us where to go. For the first 5 minutes after being sat we were ignored by her until once she finally felt like to coming to get our drink order instead of talking in the corner with other servers and bartenders. We asked for a drink menu and were met with "We do not have a drink menu, or drinks often change." I understand that maybe your house mixed drinks change but your wine/beer/spirit list does NOT change so much that you cannot have a list of it. We ordered and waited about 30-40 minutes for 2 Burritos and 1 Chimichanga. Thankfully it was still hot but probably can only give that credit to the heat lamps since once again our server was just hiding with the other servers. Not once for the entire meal did she come over for anything besides the bill, obviously trying to get us out. The only person in the restaurant that was actually worth anything was the busser who had grabbed us water and chips and was actually there asking if we need anything. I've only worked in the service industry my entire career and this is probably one of my worst experiences. Very rare do I ever not tip, if anything I argue against not tipping and have always tipped always at LEAST 20%, but this obvious lack of care and attention constituted my FIRST $0 tip. I even tipped the bussed but not her, really wish I got a name from the receipt but of course it didn't have it on there and I'm too nice to complain to a manager. The men's bathroom was also incredibly cluttered with a huge Narnia inspired dresser infront of the sink with numerous boxes piled on top (probably containing cleaning products and toiletries, I'm sure that's safe to be sitting in the air of pee and caca floating around). The chips and salsa, probably neither of which were homemade, costed $4. They were all stale and unsalted, once again had to wait until the busser came around to ask for more chips. read more

The food here is very good, probably some of the best I've had on the north side of town. Service can be slow at time. As this place gets more popular, their staffing gaps become apparent, but the waiters here try to make sure you're informed about how long the wait will be, which I appreciated. I had the chicken molé, which was delicious! The real boon here is the bar. The Sonoran margaritas were KILLER. I can see why it won best margarita. The selection of bourbons is top notch, better, and more reasonably priced than most of the other high end places that would carry the same selections. read more
