I don't normally review smog stations but my recent visit to this Waukegan facility left me bitter…read more I will not be coming back to this particular facility. First off, I have an extensive background in Automotive technology. Anytime I plug in my scan tool to mine or any vehicle, I am VERY careful to get underneath and clearly see the OBD plug. This is to ensure I am inserting it in the proper direction, flush and evenly. Not sure how well they train some of these folks esp. on how important it is to be careful when testing a vehicle. If you struggle to bend over fully or cannot bend over properly due to medical or age related issues, you may want to look for other employment. As I noted above, one should take the time to get a really good visual of the OBD connector and its exact position when plugging the test connector. Failure to do so could potentially result in damage to the OBD port connector I watched as the older Smog tech in question couldn't be bothered to kneel down to get a really good visual of the OBD port when inserting the OBD connector. I clearly felt the tech's carelessness caused the connector to pop out and ultimately caused me to fail my emissions. Prior to my visit I had NO issue with the connector and it was mounted securely. I had my scan tool hooked up the week prior and it was a 100% secure and mounted. When you are not careful and try to push or force something, it is bound to pop loose or in my case the tang on one side of the connector cracked/broke from the OBD connector mount. This was due to blunt force and/or not seating the connector flush when hooking up the data cable. Yes, I was able to fix it at home but this could have all been avoided. Our time is valuable and we do not appreciate driving a half hour only to fail our test because the emission tech couldn't be bothered to go underneath and properly plug in his data cable. Thank you, Lincolnshire Emissions Center. Your tech actually got down, looked under the dash, located the OBD connector and carefully plugged it right in with no issues. They had me in and out in under 5 minutes.

In the area and needed to get this complete. Manny was the individual who was doing the test…read more Quick and attentive. Less than 5 minutes and I was on my way. I asked if they were hiring and he directed me to the sign on the window just ahead. Easy to apply electronically. A lot of people looking for work. Great experience!

Illinois Air Team - Go on a weekday around lunchtime, and there'll be almost no wait! Avoid weekends, obviously.

Been going here for my older cars for several years. I come on weekdays in the late afternoon, and…read moreonly a few times has there been a line with more than a few cars. Very courteous and quick service. I have also used the on premise tag renewal office around the side of the building. Easy and efficient as well.

STAYING IN COMPLIANCE…read more It's not exciting but car emissions testing is a state requirement, so you gotta do it. I got mail the other day informing me that my plates were due to expire soon, which necessitated a trip to the nearest Illinois Air Team to (hopefully) give my ride a clean bill of health. I visited the one in Joliet at noon on a Friday when the estimated wait time was 4min. The emissions tech was nice; that job must get old in a hurry, so kudos to him for staying upbeat and getting me on my way. There's a small side building off to the right where you can renew your license plate sticker, and that's where I headed. Five people were in front of me, one of whom was arguing with an employee over their failed emissions test. Hey man, it's not THEIR fault your car is a jalopy held together by air fresheners & bungee cords! This guy got pretty worked up and the mood in that tiny space became tense, at best. Should you choose to get your sticker here instead of through Secretary of State, they'll charge a $9.50 credit/debit card transaction fee. Since plastic is the ONLY thing they accept, there's no way around this surcharge of ten bucks (by say, writing a check or paying in pennies). * TL;DR * This review could be broken into two parts: the actual emissions test, and the license plate sticker renewal process. The first part was great, a solid 5*. The second part took a while and drags the overall down to 4*. That side building gets surprisingly hot in the summer, and I'm not a fan of the whopping $10 processing fee....I have enough taxes and sh*t in my life, I could do without this. Aside from those quibbles, this emissions testing site is just fine.
