It's that time of the year again. I received a post card in the mail that it was time for an emission test. I knew I was better off going through the weekday versus a weekend. I was right. I was in and out in no time. Took me less than maybe 10 to 15 minutes. And I was ready and off to start my day. The lady who was conducting the testing on my car. She was nice and friendly. Quick and efficient location

But your Registration stickers here. There is a service fee.

I was in and out pretty quickly on my lunch hour on a Thursday. About 10 minutes for the test and another 5-7 minutes in line to renew my Registration sticker. The line inspector was friendly, polite, and complimented my bumper stickers. The line inside moved quickly and efficiently. You will pay a service fee to get your Registration sticker, like $6-7, but it was worth it not to have to mail in the form and wait for the sticker to get mailed to my house. Besides. I'd lost the form. Fine experience. No complaints.

That doesn't look like four minutes to me

Yeah, yeah I waited until the last weekend of the month to go. I can't go during the week, and every weekend this month has been a weather sh*t show, so this past Saturday was the first chance I got. I did expect a line, but given that you are able to check the wait time online, I figured I would be okay with a wait time of 10 minutes. When I got to the facility, I saw that the wait time sign said 4. Yay! I drove my happy ass into the lot and drove straight. Then I realized I missed the waiting area and ended up where you exit the testing area. Huh? Came back around and saw that what I had originally thought was a parking lot (don't know why they would even have one, but I was tired, so bear with me), was in fact the waiting line. Oh snap. I waited a lovely 25 min to half hour, and of course, the woman who was doing the testing had some equipment problem, so there was a bit of a hold up to boot. Finally it was my turn. I waited in the booth (which is nice and warm) while she did her thing and I was cleared to go. Next testing date: 2015 (not that my car will last that long). Thankfully you only have to do this every two years, but what a pain it is. There aren't that many facilities around the area (the next closest is Elk Grove Village), so this will continue to be my go-to and I'm fine with that, but please update your wait system, k?

My car needed to pass the emissions testing prior to getting the plate sticker. About 10am, no wait, bought the sticker and was on my way!

When renewing a license plate sticker in Illinois, you'll first have to take your car to a Vehicle Emissions Testing site. There's 11 stations throughout the city/suburbs as well as some self-serve kiosks which I didn't know about until now. Most locations also have a counter inside to buy said sticker. This testing facility is tough to find, it's tucked away in an industrial area about 1/2 mile west of Cicero Ave. There's plenty of testing lanes to pull into, so if you encounter a wait, it should be a brief one. The guy who checked my car gave me piratey truck driver vibes (and I mean that in a good way). While the testing itself only took 3 minutes, the wait for a sticker was quintuple that--I waited nearly 10 minutes outside in a drizzle plus another 5 inside. The plate renewal fee was $151, plus a $10 service charge which I'm not a fan of. Maybe that helps pay the wages of the folks who work here? Maybe it's just Illinois being greedy. * TL;DR * 11 years - and 100K miles - later my car still passes an emissions test, thankfully. Illinois state law requires all cars & trucks to get a checkup every two years. Speaking of which, when was the last time *I* had a checkup? Between the leaking fluids and the flashing indicator lights, I really ought to have someone go under my hood and make sure things are hunky-dory. Emissions testing is far from sexy, but it's gotta be done if you want to keep driving that jalopy of a car (I'm talking to you, owner of the beige '96 Mercury Sable missing its front bumper).

I got mail the other day informing me that my plates were due to expire soon, which necessitated a trip to the nearest Illinois Air Team to (hopefully) give my ride a clean bill of health. I visited the one in Joliet at noon on a Friday when the estimated wait time was 4min. The emissions tech was nice; that job must get old in a hurry, so kudos to him for staying upbeat and getting me on my way. There's a small side building off to the right where you can renew your license plate sticker, and that's where I headed. Five people were in front of me, one of whom was arguing with an employee over their failed emissions test. Hey man, it's not THEIR fault your car is a jalopy held together by air fresheners & bungee cords! This guy got pretty worked up and the mood in that tiny space became tense, at best. Should you choose to get your sticker here instead of through Secretary of State, they'll charge a $9.50 credit/debit card transaction fee. Since plastic is the ONLY thing they accept, there's no way around this surcharge of ten bucks (by say, writing a check or paying in pennies). * TL;DR * This review could be broken into two parts: the actual emissions test, and the license plate sticker renewal process. The first part was great, a solid 5*. The second part took a while and drags the overall down to 4*. That side building gets surprisingly hot in the summer, and I'm not a fan of the whopping $10 processing fee....I have enough taxes and sh*t in my life, I could do without this. Aside from those quibbles, this emissions testing site is just fine.
