2 CIRCUIT OUTAGES IN 2 WEEKS! Within the last month, I had my bedroom circuit cut out on me, for no apparent reason. But I was able to restore power to it at the panel box. A week later, one of my kitchen circuits cut out. But I could not restore power to it. So I had James from Illuminate Contracting come over to check out the cause of these two outages. It turns out that the kitchen circuit cut out probably because of too much amperage from repeatedly plugging in a vacuum cleaner and a dehumidifier in the same 15 amp GFCI outlet, and running them both at once. As far as the bedroom circuit cutting out, James recommended converting one of the 15 amp bedroom circuit outlets (located in the living room, don't ask why) to a dedicated 20 amp outlet, as that is the one that I have my 12 amp space heater connected to. He believes that may have caused my bedroom circuit to cut out (I don't remember if the space heater was on or not at the time it cut out). THAT'S FISHING, NOT PHISHING Fishing wire here refers to installing wiring inside your walls without having to Schwarzenegger (tear out) the walls. This takes mega skill, that can even frustrate a handyman! James estimated that the cost of "fishing" the 12AWG wire (for a 20 amp circuit) inside my walls from my panel box to the living room outlet would require 3/4 of a day worth of labor. But he said it would only be 1/2 day worth of labor (about $700) to run the wire externally on top of my baseboards instead. I told him that if I continue to have the circuit cutting out, I would seriously consider this second option in the future. INSTALL RECALL! I also had him inspect and correct all of my electrical outlets that I installed in 2016 and 2017. After I completed the installation, then I learned that painter's tape should not be left on wires, not even as markers, as the tape can become brittle after years, possibly creating a fire hazard. Also, of greater concern was the quality of my connections. If they are too loose, they could also create a fire hazard. Is this paranoia? Not so fast! Before I replaced my outlets, the old outlet that I plugged my living room space heater into would make the space heater plug so hot, that it prompted me to replace all my 40-year-old outlets in the first place. Not long after I replaced that particular outlet, I opened it up (I don't remember why but I'm glad I did) and found a loose screw connection! The memory of this is what prompted me to have all my outlets inspected and corrected! SEVEN YEARS LAID BACK EXPERIENCE James is an easy guy to work with, with seven years experience as an electrician. This experience led him to inform me not to replace my GFCI kitchen outlets with GFCI/AFCI outlets (that I had already purchased for him to install) as that would have created nuisance trips, especially from the fridge and the microwave. The service took one and three-quarter hours for which he charged $269.75, which I felt was reasonable. Their base rates are $140 for the first hour, and $105 per hour after that, plus materials and tax. Therefore I can see myself having him come in again to do electrical work for me (especially that outlet conversion). FORCE CRAM FRUSTRATION AVERTED Why praytell did I hire an electrician to inspect my outlets that I installed myself, especially since I correctly suspected that my kitchen circuit outlet was bad, and that I could have (not to) easily replaced it myself? Well, if you've ever replaced an electrical outlet, you would know why. If it was only one outlet that we're talking about here, I would've done it. But I was simply not up to the frustration of opening up, inspecting, correcting, and then having to force cram (reinstall) 15 outlets (plus garbage disposal switch) in my condo. That's why we have electricians! NEC OUGHT REQUIRE TOTAL GFCI! BTW, if you live in a multi-story apartment/condo building, I recommend having ALL of your electrical circuits GFCI protected, not just the NEC required kitchen and bathroom circuits. On two occasions in the last five years I've had water leaking from upstairs apartments through the ceiling into my condo, thus creating a potential electrocution hazard. On the first occasion, the water came through the ceiling only about 2 feet (60.1 cm) away from a table lamp. On the second occasion, it was only about 3 feet 91.4 cm) away from my ceiling fan. Fortunately, no real harm done. On both occasions, I turned up my furnace full blast for a few hours to dry out my ceiling. This prompted me to install GFCI outlets at the head (only need one GFCI per circuit) of all my outlet circuits. But I still need GFCI circuit breakers for anything that's not plugged in. read more

I wanted to run wire for four ceiling speakers for a Dolby Atmos home theater setup. Wasn't in the mood for DIY so I contacted several electricians for estimates on running my wire (and optionally installing the speakers). Robert was not only the first vendor to reply, but as I talked to the various companies he was the only one with both availability and a reasonable bid (straight hourly rate for labor and an estimated four hours). He was able to schedule me within a week of confirming that I wanted to move forward. Jamie (I think? sorry if I misremembered!) was my technician for an 8-9am window. He showed up promptly at 8am ready to go. He took time beforehand to explain that I'd probably need several holes in the ceiling to run the wire. I was prepared for this but appreciated him verifying before tearing up the drywall. He worked quickly and cleanly to drill out holes for the speakers, using a box to catch dust from the saw so that almost none landed on the carpet (though he laid down a sheet just in case). We got lucky with the structure of my ceiling joists so that no additional holes were needed. When fishing the speaker wire to the far wall, he was able to work around an unexpected snag (gas line) in a timely fashion. Not counting the speaker holes and the wall hole for terminating the wire, we got away with only one small hole in the corner of the ceiling for fishing down the wall. We wrapped up installing the speakers/wall plate and testing them with the receiver right within the estimated four hours. The total worked out to exactly what I had expected. While working, Jamie was organized, friendly, polite, and a solid conversationalist, and was not perturbed by one of my dogs yapping upstairs for the entire four hours. One of the better contractors I've worked with, will definitely use Illuminate again for future projects. read more

I reached out to this company for a quote to replace ceiling fans in vaulted ceilings. This company messaged me back and said that the ceilings were too high and that I would need to provide scaffolding. It's pretty weird that not only do they not have scaffolding (as that seems like a pretty standard piece of equipment they would need for their job), but they expect the customer to provide it. As if I have that just lying around. Maybe don't use them if you have ceilings. Walls are probably fine though, just not high ones. In response to the owner's extremely nasty reply, I would like to say that he did not suggest I contact a scaffolding company, he only said that I should provide scaffolding. Twenty-five foot ceilings do not seem that atypical either. I've had plenty of electricians reply to my request for an estimate, and none of them mentioned a problem with the 25 foot ceilings. My contractor is not afraid to do the job, he just said he didn't feel qualified given that he doesn't specialize in electrical work. The owner of this business is the liar, not me. The owner of this business is sad, not me. He is obviously a terrible human being, and nobody should do business with him. I feel badly for him that he feels he needs to insult a potential customer, just because he can't get his story straight and probably isn't very skilled at the job he does. He feels he needs to insult me, because he can't provide the equipment he needs to do his job properly. I hope people read this and see that this is how he wants to run his business, because clearly he has no problem with insulting people and lying in order to make himself look good and make up for his many, many inadequacies. read more

Illuminate Contracting LLC was sent to our home to by our warranty company to assess malfunctioning bathroom fans. They removed one fan and assessed it was undersized and recommended we request an upgrade package from our warranty company and pay the difference. They placed the existing fan back in place. They could not get the second fan down from the ceiling but advised the same regarding an upgrade. We took them up on the recommendation to request an upgrade, but during this process discovered Illuminate had invoiced the warranty company for about $400 worth of work - claiming they replaced one of the fans, which is not true. I called Illuminate and spoke to Robert who insists I am lying, but would not provide the invoice showing the work was done because "we are not the customer, the warranty company is." It is our word against theirs and we'd have to pay more money to have another company come out to prove who is correct. Honestly, Robert accused me of trying to get something out of this, but there truly is nothing for me to gain. Our warranty plan does not include an upgrade option, so we are going to have to get these upgraded on our own anyways. I am just frustrated with the lack of honesty. read more

I originally set up an appt with Illuminate Electrical Contracting through Fidelity Home Warranty to fix my kitchen's florescent lighting. Unfortunately, I forgot the appt time and missed the electrician when he came to our gate. They had purchased the needed parts and were going to install them. I tried to reschedule, but was told that wasn't possible, that I would have to go through Fidelity again. I thought, "What a waste of time and money." But, I understood and it was my fault. I called my son and he got the lighting working, but it wasn't doing well. A few weeks later I was totally surprised to get a call from Robert from Illuminate. He said he could stop by and fix my lighting if I would be home. This time I made sure I was there. It took them about 15 minutes to fix the lighting and they did a superb job.
