Can you imagine my surprise when I arrive in the A Terminal where Starbucks used to run the show to be replaced by Illy! I have to blink twice to make sure I wasn't dreaming. First thing you notice is the modern upscale look of the place with several nice tables to relax during your layover. I ordered the large (only 16 ounces) white chocolate mocha with a chocolate donut. First thing I must tell you is it is a bit on the expensive side but I'm ok with that since the coffee is that much better than Starbucks. I don't dish out two star reviews for just anyone. Illy really earned it today. I was excited when I walked up, the line wasn't long, there was hope of a good coffee this morning! Then I got to the counter and asked the barista(?) what kind of milk they had. He replied skim and whole. I was disappointed as I was hoping for almond because I'm lactose intolerant but I ordered just ordered a cappuccino and figured I'd deal with it. It's 6:20am on Wednesday 11/28 and I forgot to tell him what size. Instead of simply asking, this fine, kind human said "am I supposed to just pick the size for you?" I ordered a small. I did not give him a tip. There was one person waiting for their coffee ahead of me. As it came up the actual, much kinder seeming barista said, "here is your almond milk latte". Almond milk, what?! I immediately said back to the unkind person behind the counter, hey, you didn't mention the almond milk. He said "you asked the types of milk, not milk substitutes" My patience at its limit I replied, "even though it's not regular milk, it's still milk" He then said well it's an up charge and went to the register as if to ring it up. I told him to forget it. There could have been recovery, if only this gentlemen had simply just given me the almond milk to address his mistake. Just exhibited some of the customer service I would have seen anywhere else down Terminal A. But instead he chose wrong. Horrible customer service earned this bad review. Anytime I'm going through DTW or someone is and I'm picking them up, I always like this coffee. The Cafe Greco it is my go-to. I also love their croissants there. Both are very special and legit. An espresso bar trying (and so far failing) to break out. Fast service and the baristas are nice, cute, well groomed (white shorts and black pants) and personable. The baked items are mainstream (muffins, chocolate croissants). Outliers are the salads which look yummy. Coffee... not anything special. Starbucks average: espresso bitter and unbalanced, latte is ok. I'd stick with lattes and flavored lattes here. Although they've a real semiauto espresso machine, today's extraction is too fast and runny. And why extract an espresso into a metal cup instead of into the demitasse? I hated so many things about being in Detroit and being at this airport. Thanks TSA for making us miss our flight and making us spend more than a grand to be stuck a night and rebook our trip. Caught a red eye from Phoenix and had a 3hr lay over, craving caffeine in a bad way cause I'd rather have the caffeine jitters than sleep at an airport. Not really into the "coffee scene" that much other than the occasional cup at the gas station from time to time. This was the only coffee shop open at 5am that I could find, Starbucks was closed in terminal b (thank goodness) so I went back to terminal a. Both employees (1 man & 1 woman) we're friendly and greeted me with a smile. Cheap lids and cups allow coffee to leak out the sides all over your hands. I've purchased coffee here many times and I've never not had my coffee leak all over the place. Yes, I know how to put a lid on and check if it's secure. The usual crappy airport-style customer service. Expect an eye roll for any special requests such as filling black coffee to the top of the cup instead of leaving room for cream and sugar if you just want it black. Sure, there are a few good airport coffee shops spread across the nation, but most terminals are full of one chain or another. So, it was a great surprise for me when I found "Illy" in the Detroit airport. Yes, it's still technically a chain, but Illy is a real deal, Italian born, baristas are trained in the way of the old country coffee chain. Illy reaves Starbucks at DTW - I'm not complaining about this at all. I prefer the Illy latte flavor profile to Starbucks. I've also noted Illy counters in the Atlanta airport as well. I don't know that It has the same efficiency as Starbucks, but their latte blend is very smooth. The latte could have been a bit hotter- but very enjoyable. This said, I'd skip the paninis. The smoked chicken with pesto was dry and flavorless. I know Illy is a coffee joint and I should have known better. I also thought Illy was a bit pricey, even for airport standards. So I have been passing through this airport DTW 40 times this year and 35 times last year , always making a stop here which cost $4.11 each time . Today was a day with no friendly service at all. The lady at the cashier was rude , unfriendly and doesn't belong in a service position . No eye contact , no good morning , no thank you , nothing . It went like this " what's in the bag " I said good morning !! , she said excuse me what's in the bag. I said a blueberry muffin". She said that's it , I said yes and she handed my receipt to me like I have no other choice but to purchase from her . NOT TRUE. Horrible experience, zero customer service - after the fact. Do yourself a favor and go ANYWHERE else. Hard chocolate croissant, awful iced cappuccino. They offered to make me another one, which was all foam. (good customer service) then Ignored me when i said something about the second drink, that was worse than the first. They tried once, but didn't deliver, then ignored me. The new gal was training and that is why the manger offered to make me a new drink. It ended up being worse than the first drink. NEVER AGAIN. When I said something about my hard chocolate croissant, I was told "it just came in this morning". Um, ok, I don't care when it came in, it was hard and not good. I couldn't even finish it. Average coffee isn't that hard...1/2 step up from Folgers Instant and maybe 3/4 of a step from hot water.

My expectation of an Illy experience was so terribly far from reality that I was amazed. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE. The two women working were rude, unpleasant and incompetent...to make a simple decaf latte without foam. I repeated to the person taking my order that it had to be decaf and I ordered it without foam. I then watched as the person preparing my drink reaching for the espresso grounds from the grinder without the red "DECAF" label on it. I asked her if the shot she just added to the cup was for the DECAF latte. She rolled her eyes and responded, "yes." I said, "Well, you just put a caffeinated shot into the cup." She just starred at me blankly. I watched as she made a decaf latte and filled a quarter of the cup with foam. I told her that I asked for no foam. She replied, "We can't make it without foam." Apparently, Illy doesn't care who represents their company and prepares horrible beverages with their name. For a beverage that cost over six dollars, I was treated badly and served a horrible cafe latte. read more

Cafe mocha was good as always like other illy shops except the liquid to foam ratio was completely off. i got a medium (largest size) and it was half liquid and half foam, not much of a drink at all. Expensive but outstanding coffee, located conveniently right at the center of McNamara/Delta's World Gateway. You'll pay around the same as you would for Starbucks and you'll get -- at best -- two-thirds the amount in return, but you'll know where that extra money went when you taste the coffee. The Illy beans themselves are the very best that Italy produces, and they're expertly prepared here. And the accompaniments, like their ludicrously sumptuous whipped cream (definitely get the whipped cream, if asked), are a step above what you'll find at the average shop. Their pastries/snacks are all very good, too, like their flaky and delicious chocolate croissants. Overall, this is a fantastic addition to the terminal, which is due to see a ton of spectacular food and drink upgrades throughout '14 and '15 - most of which will be on the "locavore" side going forward. read more

I was surprised to see an Illy in Detroit airport. Haven't seen too many of the actual coffee shop throughout the states. This illy coffee shop is located almost mid point of the airport, right next to the water fountain. Is small, cute and definitely clean (big plus). Like most coffee shops nowadays you will find your pastries, hot / cold snacks, etc. While ordering I found it funny when I asked for lactose free milk. I figured they will either say sure we have it or no, we don't have it but we have xxxxx. But anyways when I asked for the lactose free milk she said almond milk or soy milk, so I asked her again just regular lactose free milk as she look confused. So we went back and forth about lactose free milk, soy milk and almond milk until we came to the conclusion that she did not have lactose free milk but she had other options such as the previously mentioned. So I opted for the soy milk. As a snack I ended up getting the very "healthy" almond croissant. The orders were delivered very quick even though I had 2 people in front of me. Let me tell you that I like my coffee strong and YES they delivered for my latte! So if you don't like it too strong then let them know. The croissant was not too sweet nor too dry, just perfect to have with your latte (no sugar added in the coffee). I would definitely come back to this location when I'm Detroit but will make sure to tell them Soy milk instead of lactose free milk haha. Peace! read more

I travel all the time for vacation and business. I've always been curious to try it. Well today I did and it was phenomenal. The coffee tastes very fresh, I recommend you get the croissant to go with it. Although I couldn't tell what was better, the service or the coffee...Jessica, Jena, and Rainell made me feel at home and very welcome as soon as I stepped up to the counter. Coffee is good. That's for sure. And I also had a chocolate croissant which was absolutely delightful. Sure it's a little pricier than Starbucks, but good coffee doesn't come cheap. All these good things to say so why the 3 stars? There are 4 employees currently working there. One looks completely lost and I had to repeat my order to her 3 times - it's one drink, not that hard. The other lady behind the counter looks very nice and she was very polite to all the customers. The one thing I couldn't stand for is when a customer with a little girl was ordering, the little girl wanted a chocolate cake and said "the white one", the child was obviously mistaken however, one of the lady's taking the order seemed absolutely annoyed by this and said to the mother "that's not white that's chocolate, she's getting it wrong and that's chocolate". She repeated that statement about 3 times in a very rude manner - she's just a child! The mother barely spoke English so she didn't seem to understand and walked away. I found this very unacceptable of that employee. So hopefully this is a lesson learned - just one person can affect your whole review. read more

Had to post this that I went here twice while flying through last week. I go to Illy in San Francisco pretty often so I'm familiar with the coffee which is good. That being said I got one of their sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches on Monday morning and what a surprise. This was hands down top 3 breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. During a red-eye layover I was pleasantly surprised to see an illy coffee shop and decided to stop and grab a fresh cup of coffee. Out of the Two ladies working this morning, one semi pleasant, upon my good morning greeting she vaguely acknowledged while the cashier just stared with no response. After asking what flavor a particular scone was, the cashier continued to stare mumbled something yet never answered. She didn't even bother to tell me how much my purchase was. I figured it out by looking at the register, I handed her my card, she gave me my receipt with no response and no thank you, nothing. For this lack of courtesy and outright rudeness I give this place one star. The staff needs additional coaching on what it is and takes to be in the customer service industry. read more
