Horrible service. Not one of the employees was helpful or even kind. Kept pushing the tip jar in front of me and charged me for a coffee and muffin but didn't give me my muffin. When I asked where my muffin was she said she didn't ring it up but my receipt said otherwise. I was run late to my flight and didn't have time to deal with this. Maybe on a different day it would be different but the whole staff this day was lazy and horrible. Plenty of other places to grab coffee in the airport. read more

First off, it must be remembered that this is an airport - not a cobblestone street in Rome or even a neighborhood coffee shop for that matter! That being said, for an Illy fan of more than 10 years, this location is a pretty substantial disappointment even seen realistically as its position of an Airport storefront. My complaint is most importantly not with the staff or service quality, but rather with Illy themselves. After years of hearing that Illy only works with the highest standards and trained professionals, even having once been told by Illy directly that their products wouldn't be able to be sold in our local town because we were too far from an inspector, it's clear they have changed their policies. Not only are illy products now apparently available at Walmart and any number of fuel stations & convenience stores across the rural Midwest, but also airports that welcome weary international travelers that have come to know that famous logo as refreshment and rejuvenation after a long flight. As one of those international travelers who has come to love the sight of that red & white Illy logo, it saddens me to suggest that any espresso lover that may find themselves in the Detroit Airport is better off skipping this beautiful store and getting a coffee anywhere else in the terminal. The shop itself looks the part, and the staff does the best they can, but Illy has really failed them(along with a multitude of loyal customers) by clearly not providing the highest level of professional barista training they once prided themselves on. In short... Customers: do yourselves a favor and skip this spot for now. Staff: keep doing the best you can with what you have. Management: insist that Illy provide you with the training that your staff deserves before this incredible location turns back to a Starbucks. read more

Worst experience ever. 8:45AM, Thursday Morning. Love the brand, love the coffee, love the location, hated the customer service. Stepped up to the counter to order coffees and food, but zero eye contact from the girl behind the counter. Seems she was busy counting and sorting the single dollar bills in her tip jar. Finally, looking and more importantly sounding frustrated and put out, she briefly looked up and said "I can help you"... and then continued to count the dollar bills. I apologized (not sure why) and said it looked like she was busy and we could wait until she was finished. Again, with major attitude... "I can help you". My wife, seeing how dirty her hands and attitude were quickly decided to "pass". Kiosk Customer Service is really bad. Was well worth a 3 minute walk to Starbucks. Decent coffee, excellent service! Even gave me an extra shot of espresso!!! Looks like I ended up a winner. V UPDATE - Received a really nice response from Andy, Director of Operations. I will stop by and give them another chance. As always Illy has smooth coffee. It is best to order coffee and nothing else. The pastry Pastry was dry and cold. Was hoping for a warm and fresh pastry for the morning. More like a day old, pulled from the fridge. Again, the coffee and seating is nice. read more

So glad I walked past McDonalds and found this spot. It's styled like the Jetsons and located next to an amazing computerized water sculpture. Cappuccino $5 and an AMAZING croissant breakfast sandwich with salami and other mystery ingredients.... it was so good... about $5. So about $10 total and worth every penny. My only issue would be that when the manager apparently stepped away, the staff started chatting with each other leaning on the counter.... and as you know if you have worked in restaurant or retail, "if you can lean, you can clean !" ... she should have been wiping tables and restocking the cream and sugar bar instead of gossiping with her co-worker. Lets face it, people who give great reviews for Illy shops just love Illy coffee. I'm a hugefan of their espresso. So delicious and not overly sweet when you add some flavored syrup. I got a large latte, and boy was it delicious! Made perfectly. Their food was more morning pastry-like. Don't expect to get a Bacon Egg & Cheese sandwich here. Nice display. Best part is that there wasn't a line. Every other place was crammed with people, but Illy was fast, friendly and fantastic. Blaaaaaaa, I have totally had better than this. I stopped here on the way to my gate for a Chicago fligjt. Ordered a croissant and a latte since everyone is raving about this place. After waiting in a 10 min line to order, then another 5 min to receive my order, I walked to my gate and sat down to enjoy my food and drink. The croissant tasted like it was a few days old considering when I bit into the rock hard thing it crumbled everywhere. I tossed it in the bag and tossed that in the garbage! The latte was ok. Not very hot, and not a ton of flavor. More like warm water. It's not like my gate was a far walk either. I more than likely won't be back again. I would rather walk down to where SBux moved to, or grab something at nasty McD's. read more

Ok so you would think that a coffee roasting company would want their coffee to taste the best with the best baristas... Well apparently not! I got my cappuccino along with the rest of my family and the barista, of you would call her that, burn the hang out of my milk. 1. I burnt my tongue 2. The burnt milk tasted terrible! Neither of these things should happen if only the milk wasn't burnt. Personally if I was Illy I would be looking at these Cafes as a way to promote who they are and the quality of their beans, but no the put a person that doesn't know how to make a coffee behind a coffee maker and expect people to look at their coffee beans as decent coffee. I'm not saying that their coffee is bad, but the burnt milk taste overruns the coffee flavor. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to see this place at DTW. I have been a coffee and espresso lover for many years, and I knew I could expect something decent from an Illy establishment. I was wrong. I ordered an iced Americano (I was warm), a chocolate croissant, and a Ham and Fontina panini. Grand total about $20 (?!). They gave me the croissant and said that my panini would be out in a bit. Then the employee started to make my Americano. She used what was probably a double or triple shot portafilter basket and positioned my cup under one of the dual spouts. The machine ran for something like 1 or 2 minutes, nearly filling my cup that only had ice cubes in it. She probably extracted 4 ounces out of enough coffee grounds for 1 or 1.5 ounces. When I politely informed her that she wasn't making it right, she basically told me that I was wrong. OK, fine, I took it and had a seat to wait for the sandwich. I started eating the croissant and it was super dry and stale tasting. You can get better at (gasp) Starbucks. Then I took a sip of my coffee. It was as bad as I expected - super bitter and not representative of Illy coffee. Alright, so at this point I'm still waiting for my panini. After maybe 10 minutes, an employee tells me that they are out of that panini, and asks if I want to choose another. I said "just give me a refund", and she complied. I dumped my 90% full coffee in the trash and went on my way. read more

Not bad. Not Bad. I've been a fan of Illy Espresso for a while. It's really smooth and very toasty for mass produced coffee! The staff at this location was really friendly and also didn't ignore me when I was staring at the menus. Two members asked me how they could help me (I was the only one at the counter and there were only three of them working mid afternoon). I have to say that they were on top of it!! I grabbed an Americano and a Chicken Pesto Sandwich. I wish they weren't pre-packaged (but that what you get at chain restaurants and especially at the airport). Only downside was how cold my sandwich got after I had it heated in the panini press. Oh, also they called my drink an "Americana." Just get a little education for staff members on a drink's proper name. read more

Incredibly disappointed in this. The barista was flirting with another gentleman who seemed to have worked in the airport and she finally turned around to take our order. She was nice, but clearly wasn't concerned about taking our order. I asked for a medium decaf almond milk mocha, and received a small almond milk latte - which was rung up as a medium cappuccino. I then found coffee grinds in my drink... which, as a barista myself, should not happen. My partner enjoyed his iced drink. I love the taste of illy espresso, I use it at home. I ordered a large latte, I got a large with espresso and warmed milk, and it has a bitter aftertaste. Needless to say I threw it out after a couple of sips. The servers here are workers, not baristas! read more
