I have a 15 year old 64" PRO-710HD, and the picture had become so poor that I decided to try to find someone who could clean and tune the set back to its original state. My Internet search found Bob Jones (Image Perfection) who clearly seemed to be the pre-eminent expert on RPTVs. He gave me a list of common products and tools, and on a Saturday morning we spent a couple of hours (on speaker phone) dissembling, cleaning and tuning the set. I cannot describe how incredible the picture now looks! If you have one of these sets, it is well worth this comparatively minor expense to bring it back to top video form. I would suggest setting aside at least two hours to start, as it is necessary to clean the rear mirror thoroughly (multiple times), and clean all three of the surfaces in each lens. It is also very important to address readjusting the focal points of each lens, both mechanically at the lens and electronically near the circuit boards. He also quickly addressed adjusting the brightness after properly setting the contrast base, another noticeable improvement. Bob is patient, and a great teacher. You not only significantly restore your picture quality, but you will become well-versed in understanding how to dissemble the set, the care and handling of various surfaces, and how and why different things affect the picture quality. After a few hours, the picture is now incredibly sharp, text is crisp, color deep. The convergence, a chore that used to require endlessly trying to coordinate moving the color lines horizontally and vertically on the grid pattern with the remote, was spot on without having to deal with that procedure. My wife came in and looked at the picture and said "Wow!". Even from the kitchen, looking at the set from nearly 25' away, she commented again later at how the picture just jumps out at you. Even walking by the room, from 20' away at a 45 degree angle, I have to stop and admire the picture, even in full daylight. It's a real joy to sit down and watch the TV again! Yelp explains on its website that it "has an automated filter that suppresses a small portion of reviews - it targets those suspicious ones you see on other sites." Small portion??? If their automated filter were an employee I'd fire it. Then I'd hire PEOPLE to assess the authenticity of customer reviews. Yelp's automated filter hid 75% of the 5-star reviews about Image Perfection. As someone who helps Image Perfection out with the administrative facets of its business (oops, I guess my rant will go into the filter), I can say that every one of those reviews were written by real, PAYING customers. I personally spoke with them when they first called about the problems their Home Theater Systems were having. Now happy campers, they are thrilled with how the owner, Bob Jones, saved them THOUSANDS of dollars by not only reviving their dead systems but tweaking them to a point where they deliver as stunning a picture as when they were new. Bob is known across the country as one of, if not the, most knowledgeable professionals in his area of expertise. If anyone were to search "Mr Bob avs forum", they would find Bob started a thread at http://www.avsforum.com six years ago. This thread is dedicated solely to the repair and optimization of Home Theater Systems. It contains 9,000 posts, including hundreds of testimonials, and it's still going strong. Bob's out-of-town customers (that is, outside of the San Francisco Bay Area) are willing to shell out the extra bucks it takes to fly him to their locale, because they know how satisfied they will once Bob touches their sets. As a tech savvy AV enthusiast, keeping up with leading industry trends is a passion for me. My 15 yr old Pioneer Elite PRO-710HD that is currently the center of my media room says otherwise, and all credit goes to Robert "Mr. Bob" Jones from Image Perfection. I first contacted Mr. Bob in 2011 when I was ready to give my uncalibrated TV the boot in favor of newer technologies. Not only did Mr. Bob urge me against it, but we were able to organize a Dallas visit for him, where he stayed at my home for an all-out 2 day calibration blitz on my television. Mr. Bob cleaned the deeper optics, soldered various points in the power supply board, performed the shimming operation, and pretty much calibrated the entire unit with a fine tooth comb. I was left with a television that produced a truly marvelous picture. Fast forward to 2015, and I now live in Katy, which is a Houston suburb. My PRO-710HD is still going strong, but had developed a sheen over the images, which resulted in a dull picture. I called Mr. Bob again and he suggested a 1 hr phone consult for $100 to help clean the optics. Mr. Bob gave me a detailed list of all necessary tools/accessories (just household cleaners, nothing major). We completed our session on Saturday morning. By the end of the session, I was an expert at disassembling/assembling my Television screen as well as cleaning the mirror and lens assembly. Mr. Bob was patient all the way through, and even provided after hours psychiatric help at no additional charge when I got some cleaning agent between the red lens system (user error that took over 48 hours to resolve itself). I can honestly say that the image has never looked better. The blacks are inky, the colors pop, and I have no need of purchasing a projector for my 14x12 media room. Now I will be cleaning my optics every year without needing further help. If you still own a RPTV, please talk to Mr. Bob before sending it to the junkyard. I want to give a kudos / bravo / mucho thanks to Mr. Bob of Image Perfection - www.imageperfection.com for helping me out with a Hitachi 51F710S that I purchased out of a storage locker for $100. When I got the unit home and plugged it in I was hugely disappointed with the image quality and thought that I would have to put it on Craigslist and hope that I could get rid of it. Before I did so I turned to the AV forums seeking some help and luckily found Bob (Robert) Jones responding to user questions as Mr. Bob. I contacted him to inquire about contracting his services for remote help. We came to an agreement and from Portland, OR to Flemingsburg, KY we started the work. Bob walked me through the disassembly of the unit and 10 surface cleaning of the projector lenses and mirror while explaining the why's and how's along the way. It wasn't difficult and having Bob on the line with today's technology (cell phone with camera and messaging) made it idiot proof. The picture was improved but I was still disappointed but Bob reassured me that we were on the road to success. We then tuned the unit with the standard menu options to determine what further needed to be done. Then we deep dove into manual color settings and, WOW, what a difference. A great unit that was mis-calibrated would have been passed around, owner to owner, regulated to kids rooms or 3rd TV until someone took it to the dump was revived! I have beautiful color now and it is a joy to watch. I've never seen a RP CRT unit look so good. I'm not a "phile" but I see the quality that Bob was able to resurrect from this unit (from 2,000 miles away!). I told him that compared to the best image display that I had ever seen in person that mine was 98% of that. I see these units for $100 or less all the time on Craigslist and wouldn't have any fear of purchasing another to resurrect with Bob's help. Maybe for my son's room.... ;-) read more

I really need to commend how Bob's knowledge on fixing my Pioneer pro 610hd televsion saved me $5,000 - $6,000. He knew exactly what to do to fix a issue with the power board that the original seller made it seem that no one could fix. I was not ready to throw in the towel & I googled the problem thatwas my tv making a loud popping noise then shutting down. It happened a couple of times then it eventually woud not come back on until I tried it days later. Once I saw other people having the same issues, I was able to Goggle Bob from Image Perfection and he instructed my husband how to take the power board out. Bob explained to me that the original soder used in the power board was poor & that's why eventually the connection would not allow the power to stay on. I sent my board to him, he resodered the entire board & gave a lifetime guarantee. I'm upset that the seller & pioneer didn't let it's customers know about the soder problem. I plan on contacted the seller & pioneer to let them know what Bob has done to help salviage my tv and maybe they will let their customers know that there is a person who can fix the problemed soder. When I first purchase in 2000 the seller said it would outlast any tvs out there. They didn't know about the soder problen until 2004,, a lot of boards were acting up & they should have contacted their customer. Back in 2000, these tvs went for $5000- 12,000 dependinfg on the size. I hope I can save someone else from dumping their tv. Just wanted to give a "shout-out" to Mr. Bob regarding the quality, assistance, and professionalism of his services offered. I have a 2003 Pioneer Elite Pro530HD and I was seriously considering dumping it for a new flat screen LED set. I've been "shopping" for about a year as my set picture quality had degraded to the point that it had lost its "wow factor". However, after my neighbor bought a new Samsung 7000 series and I saw it in action, I kept thinking that my set performed better when it was new. So i started researching ways to refurb it, and found this forum. I'm so glad I did. My Dad had an Elite PRO520 that had experienced the very common flash/pop syndrome . We had numerous repairs performed under warranty and out of pocket which never corrected the issue for very long.The set was retired to the basement for a few years now and not used. I found a video from Bob called him and spoke with him at length .My background is in Auto Mechanics not electronics so I was at first hesitant to waste time and more money on a so called older unit. I removed the board Bob recommended and sent it for repair,reinstalled and perfection ,no pun intended. We next performed the optic cleaning and some simple calibrations over the phone. Bob's patience and expertise really shines when working with him not to mention his passion. In a bit more than an hour the "old" Elite looks every bit as detailed and bright as my new top of the line Sam*** led . And the depth of black probably surpasses it. I also own another Elite and will be scheduling further calibration on that unit in addition to more in depth professional type adjustments. I have known of Mr. Bob and Image Perfection for a number of years and had the pleasure of seeing his personal setup. I was blown away! It was the first time I had seen such an accurate recreation of reality on a TV set. I gave him the nick name of Mr. Flesh Tone. Ever since then he has helped me with various sets I have purchased. Most recently an inexpensive 4k Seiki television that other review sites have people commenting on the poor picture quality but on my set that Mr. Bob personally calibrated, the picture simply pops and anyone who sees it comments on how great it looks. He's also done my 70" Sharp LCD, 65" Panasonic Plasma and 42" Toshiba LCD sets. These are not top-of-the-line sets either, yet he gets them looking like I spent thousands of dollars on them instead of the few hundred that I did. Having my sets calibrated has breathed new life into my movie collection and I find myself watching them again to see all the details and depth I had been missing out on. I originally contacted Mr. Bob through AVS Forum as he had posted a number of helpful items resolving RPTV problems. The original problem was that the Mitsubishi RPTV would no longer sync/recognize the Apple TV running through the HD Fury 3. Something had happened during a power outage while we were away. Resetting the Apple TV software did not help. Mr. Bob not only responded to my forum post requesting help, he actually called and spent quite a bit of time trying to troubleshoot. The problem was surprisingly solved by hooking the output of the Apple TV to the Oppo 103 Blu-ray rear HDMI input and selecting 1080i output to the HD Fury 3, then onto the HDTV component input of the Mitsubishi RPTV. Big improvement in picture! Mr. Bob then convinced me to avail of his services to lead me through a cleaning and calibration check of the Mitsubishi. Although it turned out that the lenses and mirror in this particular set were not "super dirty", cleaning made a demonstrable difference in the picture. We went on to review the various video settings and also do some advanced convergence work. Even my wife noticed the difference in the picture. I had found Bob via the AVS forums and had been reading his very helpful advice for years. I own a Pioneer Elite PRO-620 that hadn't had a deep optics cleaning in the eleven years I've owned it. I had been in communication with Bob about my hesitancy to do this procedure over one of his phone consultations but Bob quickly put my mind at ease that following his step by step directions over the phone that a novice like me would have no problems. Boy, Bob was right. Through his guidance (and Infinite patience) in no time at all my picture was as bright as the day I bought it. Bob showed me how much dust, grime and small insects collect on the three lenses and was dulling my image. After the session my picture was perfect. Bob not only was a great instructor but a great person to talk with. After the session was over Bob and I wound up talking for over an hour and he most of all wanted to make sure that I was more than satisfied with his service and Bob came through in spades. I have owned a Pioneer Elite Pro 710HD 64" television since 2000. For the past couple of years I have noticed the picture quality going down. I have adjusted my Black Level up to around 12. This helped, but not much. I started looking at new TV's. In fact, my Dad had the same TV as myself and bailed on it two months ago. He got himself a $4,500 set to replace it! He donated the Pro 710HD . Then last week faces started looking green on my TV screen. Hmmm, time for a new TV. Thought I would check the Internet for repair. Found Mr. Bob! While speaking with him, I immediately knew this man knows a lot about my TV. He helped me identify my problem, (green face issue was my fault) loose cable that I missed on my first inspection. While talking, I told him that I was getting ready to replace my TV. He suggested a cleaning before I made that decision. He walked me through it. Last week we had Bob Jones work on our Pioneer Elite Pro 720HD 64" RPTV. We purchased this top of the line set new back in 2002. We've always loved this set and the picture that it gave us but over the past two years the picture was growing steadily darker. Note that we've never had any service performed on the set during the 12 years that we've owned it. We were on the verge of buying a new 65" LCD however when I began doing some research on my old set I came across the AVS forum and Bobs post string "Don't dump your CRT RPTV!" which lead me to his web site image perfection. We had Bob come to Seattle and perform a deep cleaning on the lenses and mirror and then recalibrate our set. Bob also removed the overscan on the hi-def setting. I have to tell you that the picture is now magnificent. It's bright, crisp, clear with perfect flesh tones and I look forward to many more years of hi def viewing on this wonderful set. Would I recommend Bob to a friend? Yes. His services are not inexpensive however he did a wonderful job and I feel that we got great value for our money. I recently inherited a Pioneer Pro710HD television. It's beautiful, but it was frequently making a loud popping noise and then it would shut itself off. I wasn't about to haul this massive thing to some local television repair shop that would probably rip me off and slap a bandaid fix on it. I hit Google to see what I could find about the problem, and if it hadn't been for coming across Bob's posts at AVSForum and Fixya I would have found nothing and I'd probably be replacing it with an expensive TV that isn't half as impressive. I was beginning to look for front projectors or maybe an OLED flat screen to replace my nearly 15 year old Elite PRO-630HD rear projection set in my home theater. WOW!!! Just had my visit with Mr. Bob Jones, who worked tirelessly for two full (at least 12 hour) days on my Mitsubishi 73909. Picture is like never before -- absolutely perfect (ah, yes -- Image Perfection. Now I get it!). The application of his knowledge and skills brought out the full potential of this set, and I am truly appreciative. Believe me, I have spent a goodly amount of time today watching all manner of movies, sports, etc thoroughly enjoying the superior picture I had been missing. I am sure that much of what he did would never even occur to 99 percent of others. And, I think he was a bargain. I understand he has another engagement or two here on the East Coast -- not sure when he now plans to return to California, just know that he extended his trip here for a few more days. I have a Pioneer 720HD Television that developed and bad power supply board. I am a big do-it -yourselfer and tried to repair the board myself even got it working for a while then it failed again. I again tried to repair it, several times in fact and only made it worse each time. I frequent the AVSForum, that is where learned of Mr Bob, I contacted him, told him of my problem, he said he would take a look at my board. I thought it was not going to be salvageable due to my amateur attempts at repairing it ( I made quite a mess of it). However not only was he was able to repair my board he also fixed an anomaly with the board that was causing signal interference which created noticeable horizontal lines top to bottom that have plagued the TV for years. I first "met" Bob Jones when I was reading online discussions about HDTV's in 2000. I bought a Mitsubishi Diamond 55" HDTV in 2001 thanks in part to his early knowledge about HDTVs. Jump forward to 2015 when I was ready to ditch my Mits and buy a new set. I was pleasantly surprised to see Bob was still active online discussing HDTV's and other electronics. I contacted him and he convinced me to let him make my TV look better than ever. Luckily I live in the Bay Area so Bob was close by. Mr Bob saves my Pioneer Elite Pro HD610 This is a very expensive first generation rear projection HDTV that was about to be trashed. The screen turned blue like the blue screen of death on your dying PC. after my search turned up Mr. Bob in San Lorenzo, CA a short email identified the issue as cold solder joints on the power supply board. My 300lb+ HDTV is in Nashville and Mr. Bob is in CA. He gave me easy to follow instructions for removal and packaging. Two weeks later the set is back in business and months later it is running perfectly. The picture is like new. Mr. Bob even offered to fly to Nashville to clean and recalibrate the optics to make it better than new. Bob, or "Dr.Bob" as he is becoming know in the AV world has now saved me twice with his professional acumen. He re-soldered the circuit board on my Pioneer Elite Pro710HD rear projection 4 or 5 years ago and it has worked perfectly ever since. Before the solder job it had the typical "cold solder cycle" (heat up, make loud pop, shut off, cool down, turn on) that these set are know for. He also talked me through the details of carefully cleaning the mirror and lenses on a newly acquired Pro 610HD the amount of crud that had accumulated had a serious degrading effect on the picture. Post-cleaning picture was noticeably brighter, clearer and cleaner. I would recommend anyone with one of these beautiful old sets to have it done. read more
