I came to Immigrant Food at the Planet Word museum as part of restaurant week with some friends. Immigrant Food offered two different dinner menus, a $40 menu and a slightly more elevated $55 menu. I thought the food seemed heartier on the more expensive menu so that's the one that I opted for, but others at our table tried the $40 menu so I got to try bites of that one as well. For my first course I ordered the Indian samosas duo (savory vegetable filling, tamarind-chutney drizzle, Middle Eastern chickpea salad) which were on both the $40 menu and $55 menu, and were a great way to start the meal. The dough was light and flaky and the filling was super flavorful with a little bit of a kick to it. My friend got those Shishito peppers (blistered peppers with a chili garlic sauce) also from the $55 menu, and they were delicious. I love Shishito peppers and whatever the chili garlic sauce is that they put on top of it is definitely something I want to put on everything. For my main course I opted for the chicken Milanesa (cassava breading, tomato sauce, cheese, mashed potato, gravy) and just... wow! This chicken was probably the size of my head and took up good half of the plate. When they first sat the dish down in front of me, the first thing I noticed was the smell of truffle which wasn't listed on the menu but was apparently part of the mashed potato gravy. Luckily I love truffle and I thought it was a great addition to the dish, but if you're not a truffle fan I would recommend skipping it. I ended up only eating about 2/3 of my chicken and splitting the rest with my friends who ordered from the $40 menu. My friend try the Asian cauliflower (kimchi marinade, green plantain purée, peanuts, coconut crust) also from the $55 menu, which was surprisingly hearty and filling considering it was just vegetables. From the $40 menu my friend tried the dim sum for one (world bites served in a triple deck bamboo steamer) which was adorable but definitely felt more like a second appetizer than a main course. Additionally the swordfish carpaccio (cherry tomato, cucumber, try boil, caper dressing, crispy cook croutons) was also really flavorful but definitely left something to be desired, especially when compared to the chicken Milanese. To be fair, our server (who was great and super attentive the whole time btw) tried to warn us that the $55 menu was the way to go but only half of us listened. For dessert I got their iconic The Globe, which is inspired by Planet Word's great globe exhibit (which if you haven't gone to see I highly recommend). You start off with a chocolate orb filled with chocolate mousse and the only way you can get to it is to use the provided hammer to crack the chocolate open and drizzle more chocolate on top of it. Inside there was also "chocolate lava crumble". So if you're not a chocolate lover I definitely would stay far away from this dish haha I also tried two of their cocktails. The first part of their cocktail menu features cocktails from different countries around the world based on flavors and liquors that are common there. I opted for Australia's "the power of one" which was described as a fruity, smooth, milk punch made with gin, milk, apricot liqueur, lemon, and orange. I absolutely loved it. It was more of a clarified milk punch which means that you could barely tell that there was any milk in it. In fact if I hadn't read it on the menu I would never of guessed. The second drink I tried was their house margarita made with tequila, dry curaçao, lime, and strawberry. I love me a classic margarita and the addition of strawberry really made this something special. All in all I would definitely come back again! We sat out in the streetery overlooking Franklin Park which was really enjoyable because we happened to have a cool night that night... as long as you don't mind the sounds of the city, of course. read more

Let's be clear! 100% all around - food, service, ambiance. I was in DC in early April on business (late in writing this!). A college friend in the area joined me for several sightseeing days (DC is always great; take advantage of the National Gallery of Art) and great food. On our last night, we decided to embark on a culinary adventure at Immigrant Food. Behind their quiet, unassuming exterior, a world of unique flavors and cultural fusion awaited. We arrived early for dinner (we couldn't wait), and it felt like a "dinner at the bar" kind of night. We started with a selection of appetizers from the "Around the World Dimsum... Pot Stickers, Bao Buns, and Tamarind BBQ Ribs. Good lord! What a way to start a meal. We tried several of their craft cocktails, all on point and inspired by spirits from around the globe. The bar staff, who we had the pleasure of engaging with, were not just knowledgeable but also attentive, making us feel truly valued as customers. They answered all of our questions and gave great suggestions! For my main, I couldn't resist the Immigrant Food Roasted Mushroom Lomo Saltado. I love ceviche (thank you, Peruvians!) and discovered Lomo Saltado the night before. So, I was thrilled to try this unique take on yet another Peruvian classic (again, thanks, Peruvians!). Around this time, we met the restaurant's manager and co-founder. They are tremendous gents with a great product on their hands. I've encouraged them to consider opening in Atlanta. Immigrant Food would perfectly fit Atlanta's booming Westside (or Midtown, where I live). This restaurant would be a great addition to any city. Okay, back to the meal. We thought at first to pass on dessert, as you do when you've had a satisfying big meal but decided to finish our trip around the food world with Tropical Beignets--French-Caribbean ricotta beignets, passion fruit cremeux, peach toffee, yellow peaches, vanilla ice cream, and lemon zest. Amazing. What a tremendous evening! We're so happy to have found Immigrant Food, and you will be, too! I loved everything about the restaurant, including its commitment to the important roles immigrants have always played and continue to play in our society. This is a timely message that more people need to understand. In retrospect, the rare (one in 10,000?) black squirrel we spotted walking to the restaurant should have been a harbinger of things to come. Run, don't walk to this restaurant. read more

I was really excited about trying Immigrant Food +. With creative bowl names like Viet Vibes or Mumbai Mariachi, you can't help but feel like you're about to take a culinary ride. I stopped in for takeout during weekday lunch hours. The dining room was busy and staff were working to manage the flow. I would recommend ordering online if you're doing carryout and reserving based on the volume I observed. FOOD: I ordered Madam VP's Heritage Bowl with an Agua de Jamaíca beverage. Both were good and the bowl was filling. For the bowl, the spice was mild enough that someone who doesn't like spicy food would enjoy. I happen to like spice but it was still flavorful, even if not spicy. I'd recommend. The drink was refreshing for a warm spring day without being overly sweet. It's across from Franklin Park at the intersection of 13th and I streets. Street parking midday is always a toss up. Overall, if you're thinking of trying this spot-- go for it! I visited immigrant food in DC recently after a visit to the Renwick. I ordered their Havana sandwich. I was very intrigued by the idea of 3 different kinds of pig on my sandwich. I devoured the entire thing! This was a very substantial lunch portion, so I felt piggly and very happy. My friend ordered the avocado toast. This was a lighter lunch option, just one piece of toast. This also looked good across the table, just not what I was in the mood for today. All in all I loved the atmosphere of immigrant food. We ate outside and it was a lovely day for it. We decided to stop for lunch at Immigrant Food after visiting Planet Word and that was such a good decision. The food here is so good and they have a unique variety of options. It was hard to choose which items to order, because everything sounded so good. I loved the summer gazpacho it was so refreshing and had a depth of flavor. We also had the tequenos and croquettes which were both fried perfectly and came with the best sauces. Lastly we had the tiramisu churros and they tasted as good as they sound. The portions sizes are small, but the food had so much flavor. The restaurant is small, but we didn't have trouble getting a table. They also have outdoor seating for nice days. The service was great and our food came out quickly. If you are looking for somewhere to eat near McPherson Square, definitely try Immigrant Food. read more

I loved the menu and had an excellent lunch experience. I had the falafel bowl, which I thoroughly demolished. The sauce it comes with me is very spicy. So if spices not your thing, make sure to order it on the side. They will also bring you a house vinaigrette if you request it. Definitely looked like training day. Once seated, the server was lovely, but man could she chat. Not only with diners but it took her FOREVER to take our drink order because she was chatting in the other room. I had to ask the hostess when she sat someone to ask our server to take our order and she STILL didn't stop her convo. Immigrant Food on 13th St never disappoints! I have come here on numerous occasions and never have to repeat items because they update their menus frequently to add new fusion items. I absolutely love the creativity of their menu and the outcome of the food. Flavor packed. Appropriate portions, inviting venue, and wonderful staff. The venue is beautifully decorated and the waiters are always so kind and helpful. Recently I had the Tamarind BQQ ribs and cochinita pibil bao buns. The buns came first and although they were small and had two per serving, they were so filling and delicious. I had to eat some of the ribs while hot of course but the rest went home in a to-go container. The ribs were so juicy and well cooked. Every bite had a kick to it. Definitely a 5* meal for Restaurant Week or any week. However, I ended up just ordering from the menu. Really good service and nice outdoor sidewalk dining with street activities galore. This was an incredible meal....tried the Shishito Peppers, Hummus, Tamarind Ribs, and the apparently new Filipino Fried Chicken. So, so good. The Hummus was typical but the chickpeas on top had a surprising nice crunch. I ordered veggies on the side for a small upcharge. The bread was a nice toasted pita. The Shishito Peppers were tasty, not too spicy as you'd expect. They had a chili garlic sauce (according to the menu) that tasted more cheesy to me. I really, really enjoyed them. A couple had a strong surprising kick. These two were supposed to be smaller dishes but the peppers were a pretty sizable dish. The ribs and chicken were supposed to be larger and they certainly were. The ribs were a great combination of charred and fall of the bone. Loved the little bit of spicy kick and the flavors were amazing. The Filipino Fried Chicken was a boneless delight. So very good. Lots of good fried crunch and wonderful (somewhat) spicy flavors. Really flavorful sauces for both added to these amazing dishes. These were all wonderful "small plates" and as it said on the menu, street food. For dessert, I really wanted to try The Globe. According to the menu, it is inspired by the Planet World's globe. Diners are invited to "crack the chocolate orb to get to the chocolate mousse." I really wanted to taste the "chocolate lava crumble" but I had no room to explore. Next time!! I definitely need to go back. Give them a try and tell me what you think!!! read more

I have never heard of the Planet World Museum, but I have heard of Immigrant Food (though I have never tried the other locations). I happened to see an article about this newer location, Immigrant Food+, in a Washingtonian article about hot new spots in the DMV area, so it piqued my interest. My girlfriend ended up making reservations (through Tock) for us for my birthday dinner. We arrived a little early for our reservation. We were able to park on the street closer to City Center, so it wasn't too bad. They sat us at a small table in the back area near the door to Planet World. It was a pretty small table, so our server had to time when each of our dishes came or else it would've been falling off the table. Our server was excellent and gave us some recommendations on what to order, so naturally we over ordered in the rush of excitement. Food: - Mezze Trio - Hummus, shankleesh, muhammara. I forgot which was which, but they were all really good and served with warm fluffy pita bread. We may have overdid it on the trio because it was hard to finish the later dishes. - The Dim Sum Experience - Our favorites were the top level of Tuna Tartar (wrapped in shiso leaf) and the Latin (vegetarian) wontons. The middle layer of almost kibbeh and chicken katafi was okay for me. The first tasted like kafta and the chicken had a sauce that was a little different for me. The cochinita pibil buns at the bottom were good with pretty tasty shredded pork, but my favorite bao buns are filled with pork belly so it's hard to top. - Branzino from the Levant - Potato, avocado hummus, lebanese yoghurt sauce, tomato. Presentation was beautiful and the branzino was grilled on one side and super crispy on the other. This came out last and I was disappointed in myself for being pretty full already. I definitely would recommend ordering this and saving enough room for it! Drinks: - Asia - Shochu, Honey, Fresh Lime, Muddled Thai Basil Leaves, Cucumber, Jalapeño. Very refreshing! I liked the interesting combo of spicy, citrusy, and sweet. - 1 + 1 = 3, Cygnus, Cava Brut Reserva - My girlfriend doesn't drink much, so she got a tasting glass of this with the dim sum experience. It was bubbly and light. Dessert: - The Globe - I am not a huge chocolate fan, but we had to get this dessert because it's so cute and interactive. We had a hard time cracking the globe after pouring the sticky chocolate sauce on top, so don't make the same mistake as us. The globe is filled with espresso-chocolate mousse and served on an almond dacquoise pedestal and chocolate lava crumble. The manager gave us a champagne toast for my birthday with our dessert which was really nice. Overall, had a really good experience at Immigrant Food+. The ooey gooey sandwich I ordered was just perfect for eating outside. (Pork with cheese and pineapple was messy but delicious!) Where the business went wrong was giving poor information around drink ingredients. Either the menu was wrong or the bartender making the non-alcoholic drinks was wrong, but the one that has simple syrup was listed as containing agave. And the reverse was true for another drink. Because I'm trying to avoid certain ingredients, I double checked on ingredients when picking up the drink. The bartender was gruff and expressed displeasure at me even asking about a replacement. I ended up not pushing for that replacement, but I walked away feeling that I probably will not visit the restaurant again. read more

This is a delightful restaurant that seems like it would be a definite crowd pleaser! The menu is thoughtfully crafted to reflect a diverse array of cuisines. The only problem is choosing! Ok so while in town for the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler my friends and I were looking for something to eat after the race. While walking we came across this restaurant and decided to give it a try. Being that we just finished running we didn't want anything to heavy so this was a great choice. They have one of those menus where it's hard to make a decision because they have so many great choices. I got the Madam VP's Heritage Bowl In honor of Madam VP Kamala Harris, Jamaica and India join with coconut-milk curried chicken, chickpeas, potatoes, pineapples, plantains & a hint of spicy peppers, served over turmeric rice and baby spinach. My food was so good and the flavor blended perfectly with the spices of the curry and peppers and the sweetness from the pineapples and plantains. They also create an easy and Covid friendly way of ordering and paying for your food. A QR code is provided at the table that serves as a menu and payment method. A friend and I went here for lunch and were pleasantly surprised by how pretty the restaurant was and how good the food was. Service was fast, vibes were chill and food was delicious. I got the Persian Plants and Peas, she got a Poke Bowl and we shared Belgian Fries - everything tasted better than expected and the fries were a very good serving size, loved it all. The check also came in a passport booklet that you could sign, which I thought was very cute. They unfortunately touched an ick for me though... I would rather a restaurant pay their staff well and charge more for the food than put it on the customer on top of tips - when we got our check, it had a Wellness Charge of 5% added to the bill before taxes and added to the overall total before ringing my card. So then, tips were on top of that total that included the 5% they added against our will. Why pretend to care for your staff if you are directly taking it from the customers and how do we know that that 5% is even going to them? Big picture, for our bill, it was only $2.15 so it wasn't much but it's the principle - think about how much that 5% adds up to daily and how at $17-18/hour for most of their staff (Glassdoor, I'm petty, I looked) , that money is going right back to the company and not the staff... except if they intended to pay them peanuts otherwise, in which case, even worse. I don't like it, I don't like it a single bit. Pay people well and people will support your business if your food is good and service is good - hell, most of us will even show up for the hell of it if we know that your food is priced high because you pay your staff well. I don't know how I feel about the company but the food is good so do as you please. read more

Second time here but I must say, the first time was better. This go round we made reservations just before the city breaks for lunch and had no problem being seated. I tried the mint lemonade which was good- sweet and tangy. Being pescatarian I ordered the falafel sandwich with a side of fries (their fries are really good) and my friend ordered the "gumbo" but had to send it back. It was NOT gumbo, no rue or anything and her plantains were cold. -_- she got the Vietnamese chicken sandwich which also wasn't great but we were running short on time so she ate it. The French fries were the star of the meal. Also, they add a $1 service fee which according to the waitress is shared amongst the staff at the end of the day. It's not a tip per say. read more

Friend and I went here for brunch after a PlanetWord museum visit. I appreciated the brunch menu was slim and to the point. I couldn't point to one thing I would not eat. The service was ok, the main dishes were pretty slow to arrive, but it was pretty busy. We shared the truffle Parmesan because of course. Super crispy, delightful aioli to dip them in and we'll salted. I got the Turkish eggs and my friend got the Avocado toast. The fries came quick but the main dishes took longer than we expected. Once they came, wow. They were delicious. Turkish eggs -- Eggs were perfectly poached, Aleppo pepper was perfectly zingy, and the labneh and cucumber provided a nice cooling effect. It came out looking beautiful and tasting fantastic. TOUM AVOCADO TOAST- Latin guacamole, candied beets, carrots, with a Lebanese garlic sauce drizzle. What a fun night out with my direct reports. We had plans for another restaurant in the district but due to an international summit all the streets for access to the location were closed and no street parking for 1/2 a mile. So we took two cars and set off to find somewhere to have our teams Christmas Dinner. I stumbled across a parking spot just opening up and grabbed it! This led to a fun Experience with a parking officer helping me wrangle a second spot (he and I literally stood in the space) thwarting would be cars from parking so my coworkers could park. Once parked and paid I used my YELP App to find a place to eat. This is how I found Immigrant Foods! Ironically we all work for the International division of Nestle in the US HQ across the Potomac. So a perfect fit for our holiday meal . Located right beside the Word Museum (think languages) and across from Franklin Park. We had no reservations but the host found seating for us and this the adventure continued. The restaurant is bohemian in it ambiance and decor and cozy. The menu is eclectic in that it truly represents many different countries culinary offerings. That is pretty cool because it covers a lot of tastes and eating styles. The drinks were also epic, all except the bourbon flight. It was a good serving size and selection but I just wasn't a fan of the flavors myself.. that said the BLOSSOM GIN & TONIC was da bomb!!! A deep indigo colored liquor came in a nice iced glass and a bottle of Fever Tree Tonic was provided. We were only able to order from the happy hour menu because it was before 5:30 but it still hit the spot and I would expect the dinner menu to be quite good as well. Great flavors and spice in the vegetable samosas. Not to hot but just right. Even the hummus was good. Fried chicken was really unique with it's spice and banana ketchup. Also, if you're going to the Word Planet Museum, you can use the restaurant as a refresher and get back into the museum. This was my first time here and I cannot wait to go back! My friend and I had heard amazing reviews about this restaurant so we came to check it out. We both ordered the shakshuka with naan and it was AMAZING, I wanted to eat it all over again - the flavors were simply amazing and the portion was literally perfect. It was also super cute inside and the waiters/ hostess were very kind!! Great place for a date! Visit Planet Word museum together, and then treat her to a delicious fusion of food downstairs! I had ordered dipping tequenos, which was similar to fried cheese sticks. The chili garlic mayo dipping sauce that went with it was heavenly. It's a heavy appetizer but it's definitely a must-try once thing (mainly for the sauce). For the entree, I ordered Viet Vibes. It reminded me of Pho without the soup. It was quite light and refreshing, so it didn't bog me down the whole day. I love how flavorful this meal was, but it could do a little more spice to it. The main aspect of this place that I loved was the environment/decor. The ceiling is decorated with gorgeous plants and the woody-earthy feel of the restaurant felt homely yet clean (clean lines everywhere -- for those into design/architecture!). read more

Great and diverse menu I've never been disappointed whenever I have dined here but it's a little bit in the pricey side. If you are looking for a taste of home it doesn't matter where you're from they really have a little something for everyone. The service is also usually very good haven't had a bad experience. The food was spectacular- everything I tried was wonderful and so flavorful! My colleagues and I tried all 3 desserts and they were all good, but the beignets with the passionftuit curd were an unexpected but amazing combination of flavors and textures! The deconstructed fraisier was also a favorite. I tried the lamb skewers and they were spicy but not too much. The dips with the naan bread and samosas were great appetizers. The ambiance was very cozy and warm and the servers were super helpful when we asked for a gluten free menu and help in choosing items that were safe to eat. We also happened to be there on a Tuesday which is when they have half off selected bottles of wine so we ended up getting that special. read more

Nice and beautiful place. Served by immigrants, really quick. Everybody is nice. There are meals from all over the world. Havana sandwich was great. We have ordered 3 meals for 2, so got a box back home for dinner. read more

While I love the mission and generally the quality and taste of the food, I had an extremely unfortunate experience on Valentine's Day that is likely one that will cause me to avoid this restaurant for a while. Unfortunately the highlights of my V-Day dinner here included seeing a mouse climb up and down the wall, instantly causing my date and I (and a couple other tables that also saw the mouse) both to lose our appetite and feel uneasy about remaining for the rest of the evening. The other unfortunate event came when there was a mixup as the restaurant offered a Valentine's Day wine flight and a separate wine flight that paired with the pre-fixe dinner menu. My date and I believed we clearly had asked for the flight that matched the pre-fixe menu but received the wrong flight, including a wine that tasted like the bottle had spoiled. read more
