The Yum yum chicken is aptly named! The chicken is (I think) 2 whole boneless skinless chicken breasts breaded & fried then sliced & covered in salty, sweet, & peppery (black pepper) sauce. It's not spicy at all. The crab rangoon were pretty good. They seem hand made, on the big side, heavy on the cream cheese but light on crab, onion etc. They did send an ample amount of sweet & sour dipping sauce. Their General Tso chicken is also good. Again it seemed like freshly breaded & freshly cooked, tender chicken chunks in that delicious sauce & they ask, when ordering, what spice level & it arrived accordingly. Pretty good! Small little quaint place. Ordered over the phone, however they have online ordering option as well. The manager/owner was extremely nice and very friendly. We ordered the yum yum chicken (YUM, seriously, so yummy you won't regret it!), the orange shrimp (again very tasty however was a tad warm and i would have preferred if it were hotter), spring rolls (can't go wrong with these) and beef lo mein (good!). These entres came with an order of white steamed rice on the side. The price wasn't too bad compared to all the food we received. I always feel like takeout can sometimes be very expensive but this one was normally priced. Not too cheap, not too expensive. Was satisfied with the service as well as the food. We ordered carry-out for the Yum-Yum chicken, and when we got home... It's was excellent. The order was on-time, hot, and very flavorful compared to Chinese food I've had in the past. The won ton soup tasted off, the won tons were cold and tasted more like they had been reheated a few times. The generals chicken was pretty good, the sauce was more on the light/mild side of spicy but had really good flavor. The orange chicken was pretty good as well. The teriyaki beef I sadly didn't even get to try because it had mushrooms in it (which weren't listed on the menu). The egg rolls were a little cold just like the won tons. The containers of food were all very small and you didn't have a size option. We were trying to feed a few friends who had helped us move and said they wanted Chinese for dinner. I will say the fried rice was pretty good and the way they packaged the food everyone basically got their own container. Decided to give this place a try for lunch today since it's not far from where I work. I got the Yum Yum Chicken based on other reviews, and I was not disappointed! Some of the best chicken I've had! I'm not sure what the sauce is with it, but it was delicious, and the chicken was nice and crispy on the outside & juicy inside. I enjoyed the fried rice mixed with the leftover sauce. The fried rice was very fresh and I did like it. I wish but had more ingredients in it like onions, scallions or eggs. The person answering the phone was very polite, which is rare nowadays. We found this to be a cut above your typical small-scale Chinese restaurant cuisine. The ingredients are fresher, the fishes more flavorful, and the options a bit more unique. The Yum-Yum chicken more than lives up to its name, and I find myself craving more than I should. Their egg rolls are meaty and taste like they are made by someone who is proud of their food. Let me preface this review by saying most of the others have this place pegged perfectly: it's an American Chinese restaurant with good food and ASTOUNDINGLY GOOD customer service. Highlighting the latter is the sole reason for this review, but I'll throw some compliments at the food as well. I walked in with a friend from out of town, we were both feeling ravenous after a few hours of climbing. Alas, it was approaching 10PM on a weeknight - not exactly the best time to find decent grub. Imperial Palace (better called "Bobby's") was one of the few places open 'till 10, and we got there literally 5 'til. (For the record, normally avoid coming in near closing time - in this case, glad I didn't!) The parking lot was deserted, the restaurant devoid of customers and, to our chagrin, the door locked. "Better luck next time" we thought while walking away. But no! Bobby, the owner, quickly unlocked the door and let us in, explaining that he keeps it locked late at night in the interest of safety. Instead of being miffed at us for walking in so late, Bobby was both friendly and patient. We spent a few minutes eyeballing the menu and settled on a rather large order for two people: General Tso's Chicken, Shrimp Fried Rice, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Spring Rolls. After ringing us up -- but before charging my card -- Bobby said "This will be about 20 minutes - is that okay?" This floored me, not only was the guy willing to let us in almost at close, he was actually concerned about making us wait! At this point there was no question we were willing to, but our throats were a bit parched and a drink seemed in order. He suggested we walk next door to some sort of hybrid bar/restaurant, then swing by whenever we were finished with the drink. Unfortunately, the place was closed, so we returned to SG. Bobby asked what brought us back so quickly, we mentioned the closing and asked if it was okay for us to sit & chat. What happened next ranks among the best customer service I have ever received (and most certainly for anything under $$$$): while my friend & I were chatting, Bobby brought us two empty cups then set a bottle of "grape juice" next to us. "Please," he said, "Enjoy." The three of us toasted, chatted for a few minutes, then Bobby went back to making the food. It was done almost exactly 20 minutes after the time printed on my receipt. It took about as long to get back to my house, and the food was still piping hot. Everything was quite good, and a special shout-out for the spring rolls - absolutely awesome! For the service alone, this is easily my favorite Chinese place in Indianapolis. That the food is also among the best is icing on the cake. read more

My family has been going to Bobby's (I honestly never remember the actual name of the place- it's even in my phone as "Bobby's") for years. My first job was at the Starbucks in the same strip as Imperial Palace, and during my lunch break I'd run over there and stuff my face with fried rice and dread going back to that evil Coffee Siren. When my nice manager was working, we'd bring over free coffee for Bobby, and he'd be thrilled. Once I quit the 'Bucks and went to college, I didn't see Bobby for years. One day, probably 5 years later, I was craving Chinese, real Chinese, not PF Chang's crap- I live downtown but my boyfriend was willing to drive. When we picked up the food, Bobby recognized me, name and everything, asked how I was, how my sister is, my family, etc. And it isn't just me- he knows all his customers. He's the only man in the place, and he's not young, but he's a natural people-person and an amazing cook. He has conversations with every person who walks in (Bobby picked my boyfriend out for a vegetarian after he ordered a veggie plate- told him he'd make my boy some special tofu next time). You're gonna wait for your food, but Bobby will tell you to sit, and you'll listen to Frank Sinatra and see Marilyn Monroe on the walls. Then you'll get your food, and you'll eat it (there or home), and it'll be GOOD. Big hunks of fresh chicken and veggies. Nice hot, steamy rice. I have leftovers at home. What a fun place! It's a small family-run restaurant that has incredibly endearing decor and ambiance. There are Marilyn Monroe posters on the walls, an indoor "forest" of live plants (that they always seem to be watering while I'm in there :)), and an old stereo that plays classics in the background. Last time I went was with a friend for lunch. Reasonable prices and fast service. I got the yum yum chicken, which is my usual, and it was good! Bobby rocks! We live near his restaurant (an awesome treasure in a strip mall off of Lafayette Road and 56th Street). When you walk in, you feel like you are in a jungle of beautiful plants and pictures of Marilyn Monroe while Frank Sinatra plays in the background. Bobby is basically a one-man show who usually works as server, cashier, phone order taker, and chef. The wait (usually not long) is worth it! Most people do takeout, there is definitely space to eat in there and enjoy the vibe. We come so often he knows me by name, and I love that kind of customer service. Hubs and I almost always order egg rolls and house fried rice (the shrimp are huge!). My favorite dish is Mongolian beef that is slightly sweet with stir fried green veggies and mushrooms. Hubs was having a hard time finding a dish that he truly loved at Imperial. One time when we were in the restaurant, he noticed there was an orange shrimp dish but not an orange chicken. He asked Bobby if he could make orange chicken, and Bobby said, "Of course!" Now Hubs gets it every time. Bobby will personalize your dish if you want it to be spicy (he'll usually ask you to rate what you want on a scale of 1-10). This is my favorite Asian restaurant in Indianapolis. Go. Pretty typical small Chinese restaurant in so far as the food goes. What I really appreciate about the Imperial palace is the friendly (and clear) service. Bonus they have a pretty nice interior design with middle of the line chairs and tables- Not the cheapo typical I wonder if this will fall apart/covered in sticky substances or the full on fancy booth style- but a comfortable sitting area where I don't feel totally out of place as a nonasian female. I loved the lunch portion for it's great price! $6.19 with a mini spring roll- Yes Please! They even added some veggies to the Sweet and Sour Chicken! The food itself (including the steamed dumplings) was very average. Nothing mouth watering or unique but still good. I have heard great things about the yum yum chicken- which I am definitely tempted to try on the next round. It took a tad longer than I was expecting to get our food- 20-30 minutes or so, making the lunch hour pretty tight. This is the Hot & Sour soup that I have been craving. A thick, transparent broth with not full of black pepper. The tofu in small enough pieces to eat without cutting them with a knife and the mushroom slivers firm. You don't get the heat in the first couple spoonfuls but as the soup coats your mouth you can feel it. Not annoyingly hot, just enough to wake up the taste buds. And it is only $2 for a bowl. The famous yum-yum chicken is very good if you like crispy chicken with a mildly sweet sauce. The lunch portion is very large with 2 chicken thighs made into the yum-yum, rice and a spring roll for $6 and change. Other offerings are fairly standard Americanized Chinese with Bobby's twist but he is proud of his yum-yum chicken. The vegetables on the dishes that I have had have always been fresh and not overcooked. The fried rice may throw some people. It isn't the oil and soy sauce laden fried rice like other Chinese restaurants. It is lightly sauced with a few vegetables. The rice is still fairly light and fluffy. The restaurant itself is small and has about 5 tables so it can fill up quickly. If you eat in, you will be listening to Frank Sinatra music and you will be surrounded by plants. I've only seen Bobby and another cook in the kitchen so I am assuming that things could backup a little when they are busy as they make everything fresh, but I have never had to wait long for lunch. I would not classify it as a destination restaurant but if your craving some quality American Chinese food, it's worth a try. read more

They took our carry out order within 30 minutes of closing and had our food ready by the time we drove there to pick it up. We ordered Cashew Chicken, Orange Chicken, and Crab Rangoon. It tasted hot and made to order with 3 fortune cookies! My husband was upset the cashews were whole and not pieces but it tasted good to me.
