I went in for a smog and it failed noting "tampered" because the catalytic converter that I replaced after it was stolen didn't show up on his list of approved replacements even though I took it to the same shop 2 years prior and it passed without issue. Also, he connected the OBD2 to the wrong connector(I have 2, I replaced it but left the old one there with no wires attached and never got around to removing it and even told him about it. He didn't want to hear it. I called the BAR referee and he confirmed that the CAT was correct and even sent me an email to bring back to the shop. It passed but he still charged me $69 again noting that he had to charge me so he didn't get in trouble. He didn't take the time to look it up and wouldn't listen to me tell him about the OBD2. I came here by suggestion and boy that was a mistake. I changed my OEM air filter to a K&M one, not really a big deal. Rather than telling me first hey, I can't pass this, he not only charged me, but marked my smog as "Tampered". If you don't know there is 3 classifications. Pass, Fail, Tampered. Tampered is worse than failed. If you get that no other smog shop will attempt to pass you. The guy started arguing with me when I tried to explain to him that. He said I've been doing this 20 years and if you put the original air filter on anyone will pass it. He kept cutting me off when I tried to explain. The California BAR system will see a car as Tampered and if the car then goes to another smog place within 30 days and Passes will be investigated. Because the Cal BAR thinks that if a "legit" place tampered with you how come you went somewhere else and passed, meaning that the new place could be illegally passing you or over looking what ever was "tampered". So because of this smog shops don't want to deal with a car that was previously marked as Tampered. So not only did this guy marked tampered, but he charged me $65. So, I asked if I go get the original air filter and put it back on will you charge me(most places that are nice will not charge you if you bring it back fixed) and he said he will charge me again, but give me a 10% discount. $5 off. The owner did a smog check on our pick up truck. He told my husband that it passed and showed him the report. My husband paid for the smog then, he said oh it didn't pass and wrote in handwriting "failed" saying that he could not read the numbers on the c. converter. So he basically lied and wanted him to pay for it then wrote failed on the report. My husband helped him with the numbers and he said he wasn't going to look it back up. He then started yelling and swearing at my husband and threatened to call the police. He was very upset when my husband asked him to call the police and said he would wait for them to arrive since he is ripping people off. He never called of course. Took a 1980 pickup with a v8 engine here for a smog check. He confused the settings for the v8 with a v6 that was also offered that year. And, wouldn't smog check the pickup. Yet, he charged me for looking at it. He didn't speak very good English, so, it was very difficult communicating with him. He had me go home and get the previous smog inspections showing that the pickup had been passing the smog check every two years. He said the places that passed the pickup lied. He didn't know what he talking about. The v8 used a vacuum advance. The v6 didn't. He doesn't know that. And, he insisted that replacing a worn out engine block and heads with exactly the same parts, but new, is modifying an engine. read more

My 2005 Ford Explorer was taken to InShape Smog center on 7/30/2011 for a routine smog check. Technician Kyung Yoon EA141390 aborted the test. He said the traction control test would not work with the AUTO TRAC feature. I was charged $49.95 for this test On 8/3/2011 the vehicle was taken to Manteca Mercury 555 North Main St, Manteca CA 95336 phone 209 239 3561 The vehicle passed smog check with no additional repairs required. An additional $48.50 was paid to Manteca Mercury for the smog check. My complaint is against InShape Smog Center. Mr. Yoon was not competent to provide a smog check on my vehicle. I had to pay for two smog inspections due to Mr. Yoon's lack of competence. I went to his shop on 8/13/2011 with all invoices and paperwork, requesting a refund. He refused. I want a refund of the $49.95 I pad to Mr. Yoon. I did not get the service I paid for. There was nothing wrong with my vehicle. Mr. Yoon did not know how to do his job. He was not competent. A formal complaint has been filed with the California Bureau of Automotive Repair. read more

Terrible place. Awful owner. Beware!! My dad has been taking all his vehicles here for some time so when my car was due for a smog I thought I was in good hands. Boy was I wrong. My car initially didn't pass, so I paid for the smog and he said once I fixed it he would retest at a discount and he wouldn't charge me unless it passed. Took it back and it didn't pass because he said I needed to drive it a bit after getting the repairs. He said to drive to Modesto and come back. Then he charged me for an additional smog and said I would have to pay for a third smog upon my return from Modesto. When I complained he basically said I can go somewhere else.
