They are a liar! Once I wasn't home at all and everything…read morewas turned off, but I got billed over $100 for a small apartment. I was with them for 3 years. Now I've switched to another company. The price per watt is more expensive in my new plan, but the total bill is much lower than what that discount power company was giving me.

I was a long term and used to be a customer that thought they were a good electric company. That…read moreall changed in 2024. My contract was up and I started looking for a good, long-term deal. The rules about electric rates had also changed near this time or so I believe. The rates posted at this point in time did include the Centerpoint charge. My contract rate, that was expiring, was 9.9 cents/kWh. When I got online (powertochoose.org) I saw rates that were 13.9 to 16.9 cents/kWH which was alarming. I called Discount Power to see if they had any additional rates that were not listed on powertochoose.org or if they had any 'deals' for existing customers to continue their business. The salesman was nice enough and went to tell me that my old rate of 9.9 cents/kWH did not include the Centerpoint charge and that the plan I was looking at (14.9 cents/kWH for 60 months) was essentially the same as my expiring plan. I asked a number of times for him to clarify this and he reiterated that my electric bill would be essentially the same. I finally agreed and signed up for that 'deal'. The following month, I got my electric bill and it was 45% higher than before but it was July and it was a hot month. The following month my bill was higher again and 50% higher than the 2 previous August bills. I looked at the bills and compared to the previous years bills for the same time period and found the issue. My new contract rate was correct; however, my old, expired plan for 9.9 cents / kWH, did include the Centerpoint charge. I felt like they lied to me and I remembered that they record all the phone conversations. I called their customer service department to complain and after explaining that I felt like I was 'bait and switched' they said that they would go to the 'archives' and listen to the phone call to see if I was indeed 'lied' to by their representative. After waiting for 30 minutes, the new customer representative came back and said that they had listened to the phone conversation and the part where their representative stated that my bill would be the same wasn't in the recording. I asked if I could listen to the recording, they said that wasn't allowed. After making me feel like I was crazy, I accepted this plan as my plan and knew I'd be moving in the future. Move ahead to 2 weeks ago, I moved out of the house back in September 2025 but it took until April 2026 to sell the house. I got my final bill with a contract termination fee. I called customer service and asked to speak with a customer service manager. After waiting for a while, a CSM took my call and I again explained what happened in 2024 and they went back and found the call recording and listened again yet somehow didn't hear where their salesperson told me my bill would not be changing much. I again asked if I could listen to the recording and I was told they don't allow that. Again, I feel like maybe I'm crazy and they could have resolved that by letting me listen to the conversation. I make my living working in sales and working with numbers and I'm positive of what was talked about and the explanation of the rates yet they won't let me hear the recording that would ease my concerns (or prove me right). I asked if since I had fulfilled half of my contract period if the early termination fee could be cut in half; they said no. I told them they left me no option but to write bad reviews about their company, their customer service and their business practices. DO NOT GO WITH DISCOUNT POWER...they are not the 'discount' that is in their name!

THEY LOVE TO DELETE REVIEWS…read more Friday October 17, 2025 at around 1 pm (at the State Fair of Texas) I was at the Body Armour promotional tent, and Reliant representative, Jacob, was located next to it ( standing infront of the Reliant tent) as I was leaving. He wanted to speak with me. However, I told him I was not interested because a young woman at another Reliant tent at the fair last year lied and said she would give me tickets if I simply spoke to her about my service and did not follow through at the end. She essentially did a bait and switch. He acted surprised and said, "She did that?" I said yes. He then claimed he would not do that to me and that if I simply spoke to him about my service he would ACTUALLY give me 25 tickets and held them up for me to see. Furthermore, he deceitfully guaranteed me the tickets regardless of me signing up or not because he claimed he was the "manager" and therefore had the authority to do so. WELL HE BOLDY LIED!!! He wasted 15 or more minutes of my time asking me about my provider, having me search my email for my last electric statement, grabbing my phone to look at the statement, doing calculations to show me how he could save me $2 a month (which based on his track record was probably a bold-face lie too) and then wanted to sign me up immediately. I told him I was not interested at the moment and needed time to research the company and analyze reviews, etc before deciding. He replied, "Reliant is the biggest and best company." I then decided to pull up Google reviews of Reliant while I sat there and found a customer review from someone who visited the Reliant booth at the Fair claiming he was deceived as well. I read it out loud to Jacob. He then made up a lie that it was a different 3rd party Reliant tent, like he could actually confirm when the person who wrote the review never mentioned the name of the representative. Upon hearing my anger, due to his bait and switch, Bashir, the ACTUAL manager, came to inquire what the issue was. Bashir was essentially indifferent and didn't seem like he had managerial experience to address issues. To make a very long story short, Reliant Energy should address your marketing representatives, overall, including those that appear at events, and based on reviews of other locations, especially in the Dallas area, ensure they are being honest because deception seems to be a commonality within your organization. Due to your numerous ruthlessly deceptive representatives, I will NEVER patronize Reliant, unless of course you are the only option left in the Universe, which would mean I had absolutely no choice. ********************UPDATE 11.4.25******************** Filed complaint BBB Case # 24057476 and on 10.27.25. I received a written response from DaKandria stating someone from Sales Quality Assurance would follow up to discuss the issue. Never received a call. I also called DaKandria at her number provided around 3:30 pm yesterday; it went straight to voicemail. Left a voicemail with my contact and the case number and I received no response. I called this morning and I received no response as well, only rang. Furthermore, per the information you provided in your reply below, I contacted the chat line and spoke to Account Supervisor, Daphne, who was of no help. I explained in detail why I was contacting Reliant and explained I wasn't a customer, but she didn't even read the details of my initial message and asked me questions i already answered. I asked for the Quality Assurance department's contact number or a supervisor that knows how to address the situation, and she claimed she couldn't help me. Definitely confirmed for me how poor the Reliant Customer Service is and why I will never utilize the organization. How are you a supervisor but don't know or have access to numbers for other departments. And why are you asking me questions I already answered at the beginning because clearly you didn't read my initial response. Therefore, you are also asking irrelevant questions that don't pertain to the issue.

He was absolutely awesome, thorough, professional, and incredibly patient. He checked everything possible to make sure our home was completely safe and took the time to demonstrate how to properly turn on and use our gas stove, something I truly appreciated because I did not know how to do it correctly. He even went above and beyond by checking the neighbors' meters outside to confirm they had all been updated. We have had other representatives from the company come to our home in the past, but they were not nearly as thorough. Those visits were very quick; they came, looked around, and left within minutes. Mr. Banks, however, took the time to carefully inspect everything and did not leave until he was fully confident that we were safe. That level of care and dedication is rare and deserves recognition. Huge congratulations to him for doing his job, and doing it right, to help protect the people of Houston. His compassion and commitment to safety truly show that he cares about the community he serves. Thank you, Mr. Banks, for your professionalism and for giving us real peace of mind.

I am extremely disappointed with how my refund request has been handled and would like this matter…read moreformally documented. Over a month ago, I contacted CenterPoint Energy regarding a credit of approximately $500 on my account. I asked if I could receive a refund check, and I was advised that it would take approximately one month to process and receive it. Although I was disappointed by the timeline, I accepted it and waited. As the one-month mark approached, I called again to verify the status of my refund because I had not yet received the check. I was reassured that the check had been processed and was told the expected delivery date, with the representative stating that it had not had enough time to arrive yet. Based on that information, I continued waiting. When the expected date passed and I still had not received my refund, I called again today. This experience was completely unacceptable. I spent approximately 45 minutes on the phone and was transferred at least five different times. During every transfer, I was asked to verify my name, address, and account information all over again. Each representative indicated they were transferring me to a supervisor, yet I repeatedly found myself speaking with another representative instead. It took five transfers before I was finally connected with an actual supervisor. After explaining the entire situation once again--including my previous calls, the amount of time I had already waited, and my growing frustration--the supervisor finally admitted that CenterPoint had mailed my refund check to the wrong address. This is what concerns me the most. I do not understand how this could happen. My account is associated with my correct address, and CenterPoint has no problem sending my monthly bills to 11702 Orkola Springs Court. If my billing address has been correct all along, how was my refund mailed somewhere else? To make matters worse, no one discovered or acknowledged this mistake until I called to investigate why my check had not arrived. Had I not continued following up, I have no idea how long I would have waited. The only resolution I was given was that a new check would be reissued and that I would need to wait an additional two weeks. That is simply not an acceptable outcome. I have already waited over a month because of an error that was entirely on CenterPoint's part. Now I am expected to wait even longer for money that should have already been in my possession. While I appreciate that the supervisor acknowledged the mistake, I do not feel that the inconvenience, delays, or frustration I experienced were adequately addressed. This situation involved unnecessary delays, excessive transfers, repeated verification of my information, poor communication, and ultimately an error that could have been avoided. As a customer, I expect better service and greater accountability. This experience has significantly impacted my confidence in CenterPoint Energy. If I had the option to choose another gas provider, I would seriously consider doing so based solely on how this matter has been handled. I would appreciate a response explaining how this error occurred, what steps are being taken to ensure my refund is delivered promptly, and what CenterPoint intends to do to address the inconvenience and poor customer service I have experienced throughout this process.

If the service remains good, I'll come back and upgrade as deserved. I recently switched to Power Express, and my new plan started mid cycle. They charged me the minimum usage fee despite the fact that my first cycle was only 6 days. This fee was 30% of my bill and more than I spent on electricity in the 6 days. I called and they refused to waive the fee saying it "wasn't their responsibility that I started mid-cycle". And hey, that's not strictly false, but a little goodwill with your customers can go a long way. Next time I guess I'll opt to pay a slightly higher rate to a company that actually cares about customer relationships.
