What an incredible dinner we had at India Mahal! We love Indian food and so we tried so many things on the menu, including: meat samosa (the chutney served with this was out of this world), chicken 65 (great, but probably our least favorite of the evening), the chopped salad (recommended by our waiter - so incredibly fresh, crunch and the mix of flavors were phenomenal), the bread basket (garlic naan was wonderful but the potato naan was by far the best). For dinner our 5 year old had the tandoori kids - the chicken was incredibly tender and flavorful and the serving size was huge, my husband had the lamb tikka and I had the chicken tikka. For dessert we had the mango kulfi and kheer - both of which were amazing. The restaurant was beautifully decorated and the service was excellent! We will be back again and again! Great food, service, ambience! Reviews have been really good and we finally stopped last night on our way back from Raleigh---and it was fantastic! The place is nondescript outside, although has plenty of parking...but they did a great job decorating inside for a fun and festive feel. The server and his family own and run the place and apparently had a restaurant previously in Wilmington. Thankfully, we have them in the area now. They have an extensive menu and their portions are very generous! We had the gobi manchurian ---so delightful; The naan bread basket--scrumptious; chicken jalfarzi--so tasty; and the lamb makhani--my NEW fave! Came for the lunch buffet which is served 6 days a week from 11:00-2:30pm. The food isn't nearly as spicy as other restaurants I've tried for anyone who is worried about the spice (not saying it has zero spice though lol). I suggest the chicken Makhani, 10/10. The naan was hot and fresh. The gentlemen who were serving us were very pleasant and patient. The place itself is where bayside used to be but now completely unrecognizable with beautiful interior and decorative decor. India Mahal lunch Buffet: Food quality- Rice was great it had a great spice to it, the lentils were nice and tender had good flavor but could use a bit more with the combination of chicken. I tasted the difference in flavor just wasn't that much of a difference. The potatoes and fried onion were perfect. The potatoes just melt in the mouth and the fried onion was nice and crispy. You are served with bread that was plain but was a great combination with the food. Cleanliness- Everything seemed very well kept. Nice clean tables and dishes. The place had great decor and music that was very relaxing. Service- once you enter you are greeted and sat down and helped with how the buffet works. We were checked on a good bit of times. After excitement that we finally had a local Indian restaurant open, and this being our 5th or 6th order, today's meal was a HUGE let down. From the rubbery re-heated pakoras to the stale and burned Naan. This was really disappointing. 63.00 and we can't even make leftovers because we were GIVEN leftovers!!!!!! We are new to the Indian food scene and explained this to our waiter who took us up to the lunch buffet table, explained what constituted each dish and made some delicious recommendations. In a very unobtrusive way, he continued to check on us periodically to see how we were doing and if we were enjoying the dishes. "I've been a loyal customer for a long time and always tried to be friendly and supportive. Unfortunately, both the owner's behavior (the husband and the wife) has become consistently rude, unprofessional and dismissive. On multiple visits she has snapped at customers, including myself and staff, interrupted conversations without a simple 'excuse me,' and created an uncomfortable atmosphere. The final straw was when I called to ask about the buffet dishes, because they all look similar on their FB posts since they no longer (intentionally so) film the labels of the dishes anymore, despite repeated requests. I was informed by the staff that she told them, 'Don't tell him anything, he can drive 30 miles here and find out.' I hung up the phone and decided they no longer deserve my business. The food is mediocre with diluted flavorless curries, but the disrespect from the owner is not worth it. I've since found several better Indian restaurants with better food, respectful service and prices. The wife is very disrespectful and contemptuous. The cosplay of culinary greatness without the craft, paired with rudeness that isn't earned, is very fatiguing. A dal tadka cook masquerading as a certified master chef, gets old real quick. I spent thousands of dollars with this business, including large catering orders. Unfortunately, the owners' behavior has become increasingly unprofessional and uncomfortable. The husband would regularly sit with me, uninvited, during my meals and ask intrusive personal questions about my finances, family, and even inappropriate topics like his medical issues and local street drugs. I tried to be polite for months, but the lack of boundaries became overwhelming. The husband's remarks that he not focused on pleasing his 17$ buffet customers, but concentrates on extracting 80 to 100 $ per customer by enticing them with takeouts and ordering from the menu, are also very off putting. Over time I also noticed a decline in food quality and consistency. The lunch buffet often featured 8-10 curry dishes that looked nearly identical, and the labels identifying each dish are now no longer put on their FB website daily, as they used to be months ago. Without labels, it became difficult to know what was being served, and I began seeing the same dishes reappear day after day. On several occasions, items labeled as 'goat curry' contained lamb instead, which I pointed out multiple times and was told it was an oversight. There were also quality concerns -- for example, the butter chicken on the buffetI had glue‑like pieces and a thick, hardened sauce that tasted like it had been reheated from a previous day. After eating it, I experienced stomach cramps and diarrhea for several days. These issues, combined with the unprofessional behavior from the owners, ultimately led me to stop dining here." This place is surprisingly good - I saw it on the way to the beach from Raleigh and stopped in. It is great! Better than anything in Raleigh/Cary in my opinion. Buffet is great (lunch) and offers a wide variety of vegetables, as well as chicken, lamb, and sometimes goat. The buffet is necessarily not real spicy, but it is very flavorful. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much before we stopped in. On arrival, the restaurant was surprisingly updated from the old greasy spoon local diner that was there before. Very tastefully decorated and seating was very comfortable, clean and well organized. We were immediately greeted and seated with menus and drinks quickly served. The staff was friendly and professional. The gentleman running the front of the house offered help with the very full menu selections and explained the spice options. Indian cuisine is not my forte, and I've only tried buffets in the past, so making a choice was a bit daunting. We both chose chicken dishes, my wife having Chicken Jalfarzi, with fresh vegetables sautéed with ginger and garlic, and I ordered Coconut Chicken, with cream, coconut milk and nuts. We also ordered the Garlic Naan. Our dishes arrived in a very short time and we were both blown away with the flavors. They came with a lovely Jasmine Rice and for the first time in over a year, we completely devoured every bite of both dishes, both of us sharing the two. I usually only eat half of my dinner, but this was so good we finished it all. There was plenty of food so it wasn't a question of quantity. My ONLY critique, if I had to pick one, would be not really finding any nuts in the Coconut Chicken dish, but the dish was excellent regardless. We enjoyed the meal so much, we decided to share a dessert as well. After much deliberation, we chose Gulab Jamun. Very unusual dish of fried milk pasty balls in honey, and saffron sauce that neither of us had tried, but it was a perfect ending to a wonderful meal. Our bill came to just over $46 before taxes. We will definitely be making the trip to Havelock from time to time for another visit. I don't give 5 star ratings lightly, but this one rates. I almost hate to share this because I'd love to be greedy and keep this jewel to ourselves. Well deserved. read more
