It was a rainy night in Havelock and I wanted some cozy (to me) comfort food. I looked on Yelp for Chinese options but they weren't great/the great options were farther than I wanted to drive in Tropical Storm Debbie. Eventually, I found the menu of Oki's. I saw lots of options that I liked and it looked pretty close to where I was staying. I placed my order online and got in the car to head to pick it up. Oki's shares it's parcel of land with a gas station so don't be deterred when you pull in, the restaurant is in the corner. They were doing great business inside - there was a short line and phones were ringing off the hook. A gentleman who was sitting to the side stepped in to help get people checked-out. He made a comment to one woman about how pretty she was. It didn't seem to bother me but that's always sort of an ick to me. Then as I was checking out he made some political comments. I tried to just chuckle them off but I'm consistently surprised when people think that's appropriate to do as if we all think/feel the same way about politics/politicians. Anyway, I got General Tso Chicken, white rice, and a lumpia. Everything tasted good and was hot even when I got back to the hotel and unpacked it all. I do wish they had provided a knife because some of the chicken pieces were definitely too big to be one bite. My late grumble is that I wish they had Thai Sweet Chili sauce to go with the lumpia. This place has really went downhill :( we used to come here a few times a year and it was always a good spot to get an almost authentic Japanese food experience. Sadly my order last night was a major disappointment! I ordered chicken Katsu--no complaints there it was okay. My son had shrimp fried rice--no complaints it was also just okay. But husband ordered 2 sushi rolls and a miso soup. When I brought it home to him he said it looked weird. He ate one piece and made a strange face. I asked what was wrong? He said it tasted weird. He grabbed another piece from a different roll and made the same face again and spit it out. He said the fish tasted bad! He said he couldn't eat it and threw it away. Also when I was checking out the lady was super overwhelmed and had an attitude with me. I asked her for some white sauce, she added $1.50 to my order and when I asked her why did she charge me for sauce that goes with the food.... She pointed to the board and said it costed $.75 per tiny cup! The cup was barely filled up, so I told her never mind and just forget about it! Hate to only give 3 stars because everyone was very nice and I like to support local places. However, it took 30 min to get a chicken teriyaki bento box! The rice was nice and sticky and the soy sauce was salty and tangy. Chicken was gummy and appeared to have been pre-cooked because it had a grilled flavor, not teriyaki- which was too thick and tasted old. Gyoza could've been excellent, but was not fresh, and looked brown on one side as if it had been reheated. Overall, I would give Oki's a 3.5, bit too many food mistakes to get higher. Yakitori was burnt to the point where I couldn't even chew it. There was no sauce whatsoever on the yakitori. The rice had zero flavor. I paid an extra $3.00 for a lousy 6 pieces of shrimp added to my rice. Lumpia came with zero sauce. Overall, terrible takeout experience. So at first glance it looks sketchy let's just be real. It's next to a gas station, but its a hidden gem. The owner is super great he's a retired marine with an amazing sense of humor. My girlfriend and friend ate here. She got the Texas roll which was actually pretty spicy and fun since we are all from Texas. I had the salmon roll, spicy California roll, and then one other roll whose name I can't remember. 3 rolls for $13. Thats a great deal. They were actually pretty good for the money spent. With sushi you get what you pay for so no its not the best quality, but still really good! We also got the steak hibachi, which was also super great! It was the highlight of my meal actually. The steak was cooked medium which is what we wanted. The rice was flavorful and the dipping sauce was great. They also deliver to MCAS so that's good information. OH and theres no alcohol. read more

What a pleasant surprise!! Skip the next 3 paragraphs if you just want a review of the food. Otherwise read on to understand why this place was such a surprise. Oki's is a little gas station restaurant on a side road in the middle of a smallish town in NC. When I first saw it, my initial instinct was to hop back into the car, and keep driving, however, my fiance assured me I would be surprised. So, I went in -- reluctantly. The place was clean, but aesthetically it did little to quiet the urge to bolt through the door back into the car. I really wanted to leave when I saw lumpia and crab rangoon on the menu - awesome, ANOTHER Filipino-japanese-chinese fusion joint. (bc in my opinion most restaurants worth eating at don't have random foods from random other asian cultures on their menus) We had heard from somebody that you could order off the menu. You can't really. I asked about kitsune udon. The japanese lady there knew what it was, but said they only make things on the menu. OK. np. I got the tempura udon. My fiance got the pork katsu (tonkatsu - which the waiter thought was chicken --sigh). Locals swear by the lumpia, so we got some of that too. This is where Oki's earns its stars. Let me clarify that the food is actually 3-STAR worthy, but for its location, it earns 4-stars. The lumpia was good. It was a bit bigger/thicker than I'm used to, but I'd get it again. The tonkatsu was good too. The breading didn't overpower the tender pork underneath, it wasn't overly greasy, or dry/overcooked either. Portions are HUGE! The tempura was good too. I would recommend. The breading was not too thick, and didn't just slide off when dipped in the broth or the sauce. It wasn't overly oily either. The noodles were perfect. The only complaints were the fish cake was cut too thick, they used cubed firm tofu rather than yuboo, and the broth was a little too salty. Otherwise, presentation was more than I expected. For a gas station dive in the middle of nowhere, it was really good. The staff were helpful, accommodating, and prompt. I would recommend all 3 of these dishes. My husband and I went here last night and ordered take-out for the first time. We followed the gps and thought it was wrong until we noticed it's attached to a gas station and it's a lot smaller and run down then we imagined. We walked in and the lady seemed really stressed out and impatient. We had to look at a menu and she just stared at us. We ordered the hibachi chicken and crab ragoon and it came out to around $30! A little pricey. We waited 25 minutes in the restaurant. It looked really dirty and there is some serious mold damage all over the ceiling (might be because there is no ac) but anyways, we got our food and it was very good!! Not expecting that at all. I'm from CA, and I would venture to say that the quality of the Teppanyaki dishes is as good as any place I frequent out West. It was my first visit here, and I had the Hibachi Steak meal, while my son had the Hibachi Shrimp. The Hibachi steak was tender and the quantity of meat was a great value for the money. The fried rice was also pretty good, but I didn't really care for the Miso soup. It was a little bit too salty. My son enjoyed his Hibachi Shrimp as well, although the amount of onions that accompanied his shrimp dish was a little too much. Next time, I'll ask them to skip the onions. I'm from SoCal and this little whole in the wall Japanese spot definitely surpised me. So i've been in NC for about 2 months now and have been craving some asian food. Looked this place up and thought, why not. Expectation were not high since NC hasn't surprised me with their food selection so far. I came here thinking I was getting the Udon, but changed my mind when I saw someone else order general tso's chicken. Chicken was nice and crispy on the outside and when you bite into the chicken and past the crispy exterior it had a thin soft layer of batter before the chicken. The portion was pretty big. I didn't want to stuff myself so i took half to go. Price was average for an a la carte order. I'm definitely coming back for more, but i think i'll give the udon a try next time. read more
