I LOOOOOOOVE this place because it: 1. Accepts credit cards, 2. Has a variety of all things Indian, 3. Has spices you can't get anywhere else for cheap, 4. Sells homemade samosas! 5. Sells bottled ghee for the cheapest I've found--their big bottle is about $16.99 or so for 28 ounces (and I checked Whole Foods, Down to Earth, and the usual suspects), and it's good quality. 6. Turnover is really nice. Not sure who all is buying everything up in Hawaii, but they do keep a lot of fresh stuff that I didn't expect to see. With that said, I gotta warn you: 1. Just like the other yelpers said, the parking is tight, although if you go during the morning/daytime, it's usually not a problem. I've never had to wait on the street, although I have seen people do it when I drive by later in the day. The lot is about 5 spaces and shares with the gun store above it. If you go after work, you're gonna wait for a while, peoples. 2. If you have kids and a stroller, best go in when you don't have them with you. The store, as other reviewers mentioned, is small and packed. Strollers don't really fit down the aisles, and you don't want little hands grabbing the stuff off the shelves anyway. I did make that mistake once, but the owner was really sweet about it and offered to watch my sleeping little one; I parked the stroller by the samosas and did my shopping. The store is small enough that I never lost visual contact, though. Don't bring a large backpack into the store, cause you'll end up reenacting the George Costanza puffy jacket scene in the liquor store--crash, bang, shatter, panic. read more

My dad really likes Indian food, so I try to make it for him once in a while since there aren't many options for it in this town let alone ones I can vouch for. India Market is great because it's a one-stop shop. You'll find everything you need here from basmati rice to saffron threads to chai tea--which is surprising considering the size of the place. The prices are a little high, but I'm not sure if it's because the Indian ingredients are hard to get or because Indian stores are scarce here. I agree with Brooke M. that the place looks like it hasn't been dusted in a while. Most of the food is dry, though, so no worries about rotten produce. My husband is Persian and being far from home and his family, I try to make traditional Persian dishes as often as I can. The problem comes in trying to find spices and foodstuffs that aren't sold at even high end markets like Whole Foods. I will tell you, if one more person tells me that Armenian lavash is the same as Persian lavash, I will lose my mind. So I was having my mother in law mail me 10 packages of lavash at a time, cutting and freezing them (which totally changes the texture) in addition to shipping me package upon package of fenugreek leaves. I found this spot driving through University when we first moved to Hawaii, did a loop and stopped. Thank God I did. The foodstuffs are predominantly from the Asian subcontinent, but as the Persians went to India and became the Parsis this isn't really a problem. They stock lavash, fenugreek leaves, packages of all kinds of spices (although the Syrian sumac we got from here was basically flavorless), cheeses and meats. You have to look in the chest freezers to find the meats. They even stock holoumi cheese. I found a lot of the necessities I needed for my Haft Sin for Nowruz (Persian New Year) here. And I make it part of my regular shopping stops and always leave with more than my shopping list indicated. The owners are incredibly helpful and very nice. read more

India Market Love it, great spice selections at a fraction of the cost from the supermarket. Saffron is cheap here too! I restocked a good portion of my spices with whole fresh spices I bought a ton of couscous and durum. This is the place to stock your pantry! The warm samosas are very good and still $1.50 each. Service is entirely pleasant and helpful especially considering there is only person in the whole store answering questions, making samosas, running the cash register, and answering phone calls. Even if you don't know how to cook Indian food but would like to try, they can offer a ton of helpful suggestions to get you started. Love it! My friend told me I can find ghee (clarified butter) here. I looked it up on Yelp to find hours of business so I don't come when it's closed. There's only a few parking stalls for this place in a little lot, I got there just before the rush. I found my ghee, it was reasonably priced, but not refridgorated, so there were separation of the butter. But it's ok. There's so much things to look at in that crammed space of a market! There's so many ethnic spices you won't find at a local market. Lots of ethnic food in freezers, and cheat packs if you want to make Indian food. I was so excited about all that! There's so much more! I know where to go if I need items I can't find else where. There is a small selection of jewelry, clothes, beauty products, and ethnic treats. The wall behind the cash wrap is their DVD rental. The only girl that was working there was very nice. And please don't forget your reusable shopping bag! read more

Love this store, amazing variety of Indian spices and European delicious sweets, reasonable (still high, but better than down-to-earth or whole foods) prices. Selection of Indian movies brings me back to times when I was kid and watched Indian dramas. BUT I'm taking away one star for customer service. I come every week, and every time I'm ignored: no greeting, no help at all. Cool little Indian market conveniently located on the corner of Beretania and Isenberg. I like to cook and love to eat Indian food, so I when I was in need of some Indian spices(not easy to find in Hawaii) the other day, I reached out to my trusty Yelp and bingo, India Market, right down the street from where I live. India Market is very easy to find and has plenty of parking around it. I parked in their lot off of Isenberg and entered the store from the parking entrance. Like mentioned in a few other reviews, the spices hit you hard upon entering, which I loved, and then was greeted warmly by a nice young Indian woman. I knew I was in the right place. This little store had every little Indian spice I asked for and then some, in addition to some cool cook ware and traditional garb ( Should you throw a themed dinner party or do a little Bollywood roll playing ;) ). If you need any form of Indian food whether spices or already prepared, this is a great place to get them. Enjoy... I'm new to the world of actually creating Indian dishes (vice just eating them at restaurants). This is a small store packed to the hilt with food items, videos and other stuff. A bit confusing if you don't know what you're looking at/looking for....but so much to discover - it'll take me several visits to learn what's all there. The parking is HORRIBLE - about 4 or 5 spots crammed into a very small paved area. I usually come for the Bollywood movies. India Market's selection is uneven and all too many of the DVDs have been scratched by careless users. My friend and I, have been looking for a saree for her upcoming wedding and she said there is this little indian market that she pops into for Indian spices and food. They have many varieties of spices and foods from india. This would be a great place to explore if you are looking for specific spices for a recipe. But, I must say that the customer service there sucks...the woman at the cashier is beyond rude..I normally am very sweet and let sucky customer service go...but my friend said she always gets treated rudely there, and doesn't care...It could be that my friend is white and her boyfriend is indian...but, still you shouldn't treat any customer rudely....It was appalling...so, if you are looking to be treated badly and get great stuff....lol. ..then go there..... read more

Love this store! No matter it is small in size, it is packed with treasures normally difficult to find on island of Oahu. This place has most of the spoiled stuff. The store policy says that when you buy stuff and needs to exchange or return you need to have the receipt even though you just bought went to your car and came back. This is very unfortunate. I would not recommend this place as its a health hazard to eat spoiled stuff unless you starve to die. I wish there would be another store. read more

We discovered India Market on one of our visits to Honolulu years ago and it became our "go-to" place during any visit to Oahu. The freezer stocks microwavable malai kofta and saag paneer (brand name "DEEP Indian Gourmet") that is honestly better than most restaurant versions -- I'm so gungho evangelist about the flavor/texture that I've already bought three extra boxes for friends). For those with a little more time to spare, the Parampara brand spice mixes make it super simple to simmer up a curry for dinner. I wish this island had more ethnic markets like this. I absolutely love little shops dedicated to authentic ingredients from a culture because I love to cook different types of cuisine. It's tough to find authentic ingredients at an average grocery store. This shop has a great selection of Indian spices, refrigerated goods (paneer!!!), prepared mixes, preserved items, and my favorite--chutneys! They have everything you need to make a perfect Indian dish! The woman who works there is very friendly and helpful and doesn't make me feel like an outsider like I have felt at other ethnic markets. Their samosas are cheap, delicious, and fresh. Parking may be a bit difficult because there are only 5 spaces, but there's also nearby parking along Isenberg next to the baseball field. I recommend coming here because it's essential to support local businesses dedicated to diverse cultural cuisine. it's like they brought a little bit of china town to moiliili...like a slice by river street... i'm not mr. clean, but there's a layer of dust on lots of the food products... my wife came here to get some curry spices...one of the ones the lady rec'd we needed smelled like sh!+...she said that'd go away after we cooked w/ it...WRONG...not only did it make the frig smell like sh!+, it made the whole house smell like sh!+...couldn't get this stuff in the garbage fast enuff... parking can definitely be an issue too...it's a small lot and when we were there, the 24 hour "massage" place above it just got a crew of construction workers as customers who blocked the driveway...had to play like traffic cop/pkg control 4 some time to get the heck out of this joint... read more
