Buffet Chicken Tandoori (top) and Chili Chicken (bottom)

Even though Simi Valley has not more than a handful of Indian restaurants, there are representatives in this class that deserve a visit. One of these eateries is Indian Haweli, on Los Angeles Avenue. It maybe the only Indian cuisine location that has a lunch buffet ($14.99) in Simi. The dining area is small, but well appointed, with simple decor. There was one staff member that was maintaining the area and keeping the food well stocked. That should not be a deterrent. Service was friendly, informative and professional. If anything, some of the lunch buffet items were drying out. So additional assembly of these dishes with more liquid and/or keeping them covered could change the landscape and optics. See my pictures for the offerings. What stood out for me was the two appetizers (Aloo Tikki and Samosas), the latter having a different flavor. There are several selections of chicken and vegetables. Accompaniments are Naan, Rice, Salad, Raita, Chutneys (both Mint and tamarind), pappar and Indian desserts (that include Gulab Jamoo). Wine and beer is also available.

My first time eating Indian food, everything was flavorful. We had the rice with raisins & nuts, (I'm so sorry I didn't remember the name) garlic naan, chicken tikka masala and butter chicken. Garlic naan is freshly made and it's so delicious! The portion sizes were good too.

Came today with a friend for lunch right when they opened. There was already a few people there eating. I like to come on Tues and Sunday's because they have curried goat. My favorite! They also had a great eggplant dish. I can never eat more than one plate, but service is always great. Was a nice 1.5 hour lunch to catch up with my friend. Love that it's so close to home too.

My Dad and I wanted to grab lunch yesterday and he recommended we stop by Indian Haweli for their lunch buffet and I was so impressed. I have never had a samosa be that good. The food was so amazing and such a reasonable price. Usman was our server and he was so sweet and accommodating. I'm jealous of my Dad that he gets to come here regularly because he is in the area but I will be back when I visit Simi!

One bite of this and I'm transported back to my childhood. The spinach pakoras (fritters) make an incredible base for the multi-seasoned, multi-textured, complexity of this dish. Crispy spinach pakoras, topped cubed potatoes and garbanzo beans, with cool yogurt, seasoned with the quintessential spicy green mint/cilantro chutney and tangy and sweet tamarind chutney and sprinkled with seasonings-- including the tartly delicious chaat masala...yum. Every bite. Every spoonful. Perfect. 5/5 Coconut chicken curry -- creamy, healthy chunks of chicken and a perfect morsel with delicious chewy, soft naan. I asked for medium spice -- next time I'll go max spice. 4/5 Masala chai-- delicious - but missed the mark somehow. Maybe because my homemade chai is so good. Although it is offered free -- so can't complain too much. 3/5 Stuffed parathas. These were well filled and not skimpy on the filling and perfectly cooked. Each morsel taken was a memory of my motherland. I've had biryani, lamb and goat curry and gobi Manchurian here on different trips -- all absolutely delicious.

Pretty good Indian food but expect lots of butter/ghee in the food!!…read more My friend and I dropped by for dinner Saturday evening around 7:30 pm. To our surprise, there was just one other group there even though it should've been peak dining hours. Because of this, we didn't have high expectations for the food, but surprisingly it turned out okay. The space is nice and big with both table and booth seating. It looked like there was a private room for events off to one side as well. Since it's a chaat place, we got some chaat as well as a curry. We shared the following: Pav bhaji ($10.99) Paneer kathi roll ($10.99) Chicken tikka masala ($17.99) Plain roti and naan ($2.99 + $3.49) Out of everything, the pav bhaji was our favorite. The bhaji was drier than usual (usually it's a bit more liquid), but the flavor was good. There was also a strong taste of butter/ghee, more than what I'm used to, so it's definitely a very rich dish here, especially with the extra chunk of butter they serve on top. Too bad they only serve two pav by default, as at least 3, maybe 4, would've been good to go with the amount of bhaji provided. I only took a bite of the kathi roll, but it was a bit too sweet for me personally. However, my friend liked it and said that the paneer tasted very fresh and soft. The chicken tikka masala was pretty standard. Nothing to write home about. We were pleasantly surprised by the flavors here. It's not super close to where we live but we might come back to try some of the other chaat!

The "Taste of Punjab", in Moorpark, was an over 20-mile one way trip for me from the SFV. If you…read morelike North Indian food, it is my opinion that the state of Punjab in India (and I have spent time there), provides food preparations that are a notch above the rest of its Indian state counterparts (e.g. Uttarkhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh). So I called the restaurant to fine tune. Their lunch buffet was only on Fridays. The spread would only contain 3 meat selections, all of them chicken (really, no variety?) and only 3 vegetable choices (really, is that all?) Then an appetizer, salad components and condiments. There would be rice and Naan too. A meager set of choices for a $15.99 buffet? Yet, the restaurant was enticing. Hence the pull, to taste their version, of Punjabi food. That sealed the deal for me and I was on my way to pay a visit, and eat. As expected, the choices were limited. There was chicken tikka, chicken tandoori and chicken curry. For vegetables, aloo bhegan (potatoes and eggplant), peas paneer (peas with sautéed Indian cheese cubes) and dahl (lentil curry). The Naan was not brought fresh table-side, but delivered to the hot case. Still, it was soft and wonderful, actually well executed, had good chew, cut into medium sized pieces. Rice came out in small portions in a bowl and was not dry (unlike other buffets). For appetizers, they had one choice, good sized samosas with a thin wrapping (also unlike other buffets) and a simple ,but very tasty and moist potato filling. They were truly fantastic (I had 4 of them, a first for me!). That too, came out, as needed. Like it should be. For me, this is also a sign of thoughtful food management, to provide just prepared items, to enhance freshness, cut down on wastage. On the condiment side though, there were disappointments. The tamarind chutney was watery and their mint chutney thick, and from a bottle. Not fresh. Raita was creamy, with body and wholesome. What was striking at the Taste of Punjab, was the unmistakable high quality and culinary prowess of the chef(s). Every dish oozed with freshness, aroma, rich flavor and an intoxicating blend of well married spices and taste. The three chicken dishes were tender, with soft meat having a perfect texture to satisfy. Overall, every selection on the buffet was unique because, it felt and tasted so different. High class, is the best way to describe it. I was really amazed and blown away. Was also pleased, that my relentless hunger, curiosity and the lengthy drive here to Moorpark, had borne sweet fruit. It was a reward. Definitely, a Punjabi lunch buffet to remember, for a very long time.

Food is great. Staff so friendly. Highly recommend. Nice to have a great spot like this in Moorpark.read more

The vegan options were plentiful -- and more importantly, they were exceptional. The flavors were bold and intentional, layered in a way that reminds you why you fell in love with Indian cuisine in the first place. I say this with fresh context: we've recently tried a couple of other Indian restaurants in the area, hoping to find something worth revisiting. One served a Dal so overspiced it was nearly inedible. Another offered a Tikka Masala so bland it barely registered. Neither experience was terrible -- but both served as a reminder of just how high Karma's bar actually is. In all my years coming here, I have never once been disappointed. Not once. The kitchen cooks with something that's hard to put into words -- a care and intentionality that comes through in every dish. You taste it. My 2014 review said the food was prepared with good heart and spirit, and that remains as true today as it was then. Chicken tikka (marinated boneless with garlic sauce) has the most softest meat with the correct ingredients used. Tandoori fish (boneless tandoor flavor with onions) is another favorite. Lots of tasty vegetarian meals too like the saffron rice and paneer tikka cottage cheese is a must order. Everything comes out pipping hot where servers wear a spiffy uniform. A friend who has great taste in food recommended this place - he and his wife have ordered food from here before and had it delivered. My parents and I did the same tonight, and I'm sorry to say we're all extremely underwhelmed. For context, we're Indian, so we know what Indian food is supposed to taste like, and what goes in it - my friend and his wife are not, so I can't (and won't) blame them in this case. Their other food recommendations have been excellent. We ordered the matar paneer, tadka dal, chana bhuna, Peshwari Naan, and 2 garlic butter naans. The dal was OK - good consistency but just OK. The chana bhuna was again, just OK - it lacked salt and didn't have much masala so I'm not sure why they're calling it "bhuna." The matar paneer was the most disappointing of all. It was in some bizarre, watery, milk-consistency yellow sauce we've never seen before and literally lacked any kind of flavor whatsoever: no masala, no salt, and no spices. I get that it was ordered mild, but that is only supposed to apply to heat (e.g. cayenne pepper/powder), not mean make it totally bland and devoid of non-heat spices that typically go in masalas (ground onions, garam masala, garlic, ginger, tomato, coriander powder, etc.). The only positive thing I can say about the matar paneer is that they at least gave plenty of paneer pieces unlike most restaurants where finding paneer is a frustrating fishing expedition. Onto the naans: the garlic butter naans were also just OK - a bit over cooked so they were hard and dried out, so perhaps the butter had already gotten absorbed by the time it made it to our house. The Peshwari naan was soft and flaky but a bit too overstuffed. (Although I suppose that's better than it being understuffed.) The food all arrived piping hot and smelled amazing, which is why the inferior quality of the food itself was additionally disappointing. We can only conclude that whoever the chef is at this place is not Indian; or if s/he is, then they need to go back and have their mom or an Indian Auntie teach them how to cook properly. And if they're not Indian, then they need to find an Indian Auntie to learn from and only then should they be cooking Indian food for sale. Seeing all of the rave reviews, including some from Indian folks, I wonder if we just ordered on a bad night when the regular chef was perhaps out sick or something, but I can't honestly recommend this place and won't be ordering from it again or visiting it in person, either. It wasn't cheap and it just didn't taste like Indian food should be.
