I got the chicken tikka masala under the chicken specialty section and asked if the 5 level would make me cry. The waiter laughed and said absolutely, so I went with the 4. He was NOT wrong. I didn't cry, but I definitely started sniffling and my mouth was on fire when I bit into a pepper. The delicious mango lassi saved me. It had tiny bits of pistachio which was a revelation to me. I loved it and it tasted so fresh, not overly sweet. The chicken tikka masala was less saucy and creamy than I'm used to, instead it had a thick gravy consistency, but it was still very flavorful. I think the chicken tikka under their tandoori grill section might be more like I'm used to, where you can dip the naan in the sauce. The pieces of chicken were pretty big too. The garlic naan was generous and the mushroom pulao rice was delicious. Some reviews say this place is casual but I felt a bit underdressed since they do have white tablecloths/napkins. Service was very attentive and friendly. It was very warm inside so it was a nice break from the cold.

The space is clean and comfortable enough. A bit run-down though. For example, the decor is very dated, and the booth we sat at had tears in the seating which were duct-taped together. Looks tacky and cheap. Service was good, nothing to complain about there. But now for the food. We tried: Chicken pakora - slightly overcooked but not terrible, too salty fish pakora - nicely cooked fish, moist, firm - but too salty butter chicken - very average. Chicken breast chunks were fine, sauce was not that flavourful chicken tikka masala - a bit too sweet for my taste, and not much chicken, mostly onions garlic naan - fine. Naan had a nice texture, but very little garlic mixed grill platter - had a bit of lamb, chicken, prawns, fish. Everything was overcooked, dry, and just too salty. We are spoiled down in Vancouver with an abundance of excellent authentic Indian restaurants. This place in whistler is really only still standing because it has no real competition. Otherwise, the food is too salty, and frankly below average. Also the pricing is extraordinarily high for very small portions and a very casual dining experience - so why pay fine dining prices? The people running it were nice. That gets them 3 stars instead of 2. I would not recommend or come back here.

So I went to Saffron in 2019 and had Butter Chicken so sweet I didn't eat it and left. (No one…read moreasked me if another dish might suit me better.) Six years later my wife and I decided to try again. Me: I was here years ago and I found the dish I ate too sweet. Is it possible to get my food without sugar? Sweet Waitress What was the dish? Me: I think it was Butter Chicken Sweet: There's no sugar in our Butter Chicken. It's made with tomato paste, ketchup... Me: (after she had finished listing ingredients.) Ketchup is almost pure sugar. I've been eating Indian cuisine for the large part of two centuries and in many cities on two continents. I cook northern and southern Indian dishes. I've taken classes, have several cookbooks and subscribe to the better you tube channels (I recommend Swasthi's.) Ketchup is not an ingredient in Indian food. I asked if there was ketchup in several other dishes and was basically told that the Korma was my best and only choice. There was ketchup even in the tandoori chicken. (There is an exception. There is a little chopped onion salad that is often made with either tomato chutney or ketchup.) Korma is a light sauce usually made with yoghurt and maybe a little cream. This was thickened with flour. So much flour that it reminded me of the time I tasted the paste in nursery school. The best word to describe it is "glop." To the many people who wrote rave reviews I beg you to take the ferry to the city and go to one of the many fabulous Indian restaurants there. Swad in West Vancouver is closest and the best. Vij's is amazing but very pricey. Sula and East is East are both terrific and you will pay the same as Saffron, maybe a tad less. My wife had the dahl. A lentil dish. It had a very strong flavour of...you guessed it---ketchup. We asked and, yes, it was, in fact, ketchup. The service was lovely. The naan bread was very good. Neither of them contained ketchup.
