We were caught off guard with the late fall temperature in Squamish on a Sunday morning drive from Vancouver earlier this week. We did check the weather when we left home but we didn't acclimate quickly enough after the summer to understand what low single-digit temperatures really meant. After a brisk walk along the boardwalk and downtown, we quickly needed to find a warm place for a hefty breakfast. It was the only diner type restaurant open mid morning on Cleveland. It looked good from the outside so we went straight in. We were seated right away. There are many typical options on the breakfast and lunch menus. We both had The Usual breakfast - 2 eggs, choice of meat, choice of toast, fried potatoes, and a portion of mixed fruits. I had sausages which were plump and juicy. The fried sliced potatoes looked different from how fried potatoes / hash would usually be served in a diner but they tasted good I like that you can stack a few of them up and cut through them, like eating stacks of mini pancakes. But potatoes trump pancakes anytime and any day. read more

Ok soooo my and I ate here for New Year's Day for breakfast after leaving from Whistler, BC with a Party of 6. We waited 1.5hr to be served our food with only 3 other people ahead of us waiting for their food. The place was empty and only 3 plates were served at a time to each of us. The fruit portion was just two VERY thin apple slices and one grape for the food decor on each plate! The food portions were the smallest I've ever seen for diner food options. We had to wait so long that we had to go down to the coffee shop down a few stores to get lattes and pastries (Sunflower Bakery & Cafe I recommend hands down) while we waited. The server had an attitude and was the only person taking the orders and busing the tables (the dishes from other tables were not picked up). Yes one person managing the customers but I honestly felt she had time to pick up the dishes around other tables and ask if we needed any coffee or water. There were no other customers after us that came in. The few that did walk in were told the restaurant was closed. There was one syrup container and that my son had to ask to barrow from the other table still finishing up the meal. The potatoes on our plate seemed like they were from a frozen bag and reheated on a pan, no taste or seasoning on them. Sausages were not seasoned and no flavor to them. The pictures on the previous reviews do not compare or come close to what we were served. The food did not make any of us sick and the restaurant was clean that is the only reason this restaurant is getting two stars on my review. Would I ever come here, Absolutely NEVER! We arrived at Chef Big D's for breakfast for a party of 6. I was immediately off put by the unwelcoming staff that told us to pick a seat, even though there was a clear sign at the front entrance that stated to wait to be seated. We scanned the menu which included typical breakfast options such as eggs, bacon, ham and sausage, breakfast sandwiches as well as omelettes. I unfortunately have a gluten allergy (celiac) and asked the server if they had gluten free toast (which they have but do not offer it on the menu). The hash-browns unfortunately are tossed in flour before deep frying (which was not listed on the menu) so I was given the alternative to have French fries (which were fried in the same oil) and I didn't necessarily want French fries for breakfast. When the food arrived my brother in laws breakfast sandwich smelt and tasted sour. It was the ham that was on the sandwich so he did not finish the sandwich. My eggs were cooked fine, but definitely at their expiration date. We are travelling from Ontario and have eaten so many amazing meals while visiting and this one did not meet the expectations that we have. Hate to get this place 2 stars, but Big Chef D has gone WAAAY down hill since my first visit 10 years ago. Up until this year, I found the service upbeat, cheerful, servers wearing "living the dream in Squamish BC" t-shirts. Clean place, well wiped tables, friendly efficient servers - great food and portions. The menu is almost the same as in the past, and the breakfast wrap I had was delicious. My friend had the club house sandwich, it's still mile high, however their house salad has changed and not for the better. The house salads here in the past were pyramid high, brightly coloured medley of purple and yellow veggies, carrots, beats, the best house salad I've seen in years, anywhere. Now, it's just simple mescalin style greens, and much a smaller portion too. We had to ask for coffee refills, and only got one for our brunch meals. Request for additional napkins was ignored. Servers take your order, drop it off, that's it. Kind of the norm these days, staff standing behind the counters texting, ignoring their tables. This was the most uninterested, lacklustre restaurant service I've had in a while. I'll keep an eye out for new brunch spots in the future, as the sharp decline is portions, menu items and service make me reluctant to return. read more

This place WAS my favourite breakfast wrap with their sliced potatoes and fresh baked goods. The new owners have DESTROYED this place. It is hands down the worst breakfast I have ever had. 1/4 cup of square burnt potatoes, looks like they cut the breakfast wrap recipe in half and skimped out on the roasted garlic mayo and the sliced apple smelled like perfume. Walking around town on a Sunday morning it was one of a few places open before 11am so we decided to give it a try for breakfast. Clean space and prompt service. Waitress wasn't too chatty but it was busy and they were quick to take our order and food came out pretty quick. The restaurant had a steady stream of people coming in but there always seemed to be a table available. I had the 'usual' - 2 eggs scrambled, multigrain toast, sausage, and potatoes. Also came with some melon and grapes. The potatoes are sliced thin and deep fried, and tasted of rosemary - they looked pale and lifeless ... but were pretty good. The sausages were plump and juicy (not the thin supermarket type). Overall, a very tasty breakfast (~$17). Coffee ($3+) was your typical brew - ok but a bit pricey for what it was. H and I came here for breakfast. It was a full house on a Sunday morning when we arrived. There are not a lot of breakfast places in the area. We had to wait a bit for a table. We were very lucky that someone was leaving. We sat down in the corner. We noticed that it was not easy to flag down a server. The restaurant is quite big when you compare it to other restaurants in the area. My friend and I each got the crab cake benedict $19. Portion size was a bit smaller compared to restaurant in Metro Vancouver. We noticed that the crab cake benedict didn't come with English muffin. This was somewhat strange for someone who loves egg benedict. The potatoes were not great at all. the fruits are just fruits (nothing special) We found the food mediocre and service was like a 2 stars here. Well, we are in a small town. Definitely can't expect too much. Prices are on the higher end given the quality, quantity and service here. read more

Burger meat has strange flavours, nothing special lack of seasoning. Price is on high side. Lack of staff for service. Kids spilled water over table, no one bother came assist. The host seems overworked with exhaust face. New owner I assume, first time try and last time visit. Only one restroom which is very bad. Would I recommend ? Stopped by during our way from Whistler. So glad I've picked this place! I chose "As Usual" option and happy that they have vegan option. I'm not a vegan, but bacon and sausage are not healthy option. So tomato and avocado is always a better choice. -1 star since girl mixed up our checks (which is fine) but it took her long time to come back with correct ones. Had a great breakfast here with good service! I really enjoyed my Healthy D's frittata (spinach, red peppers, and feta!) which came with a lovely side of fruit. I wanted to try a pancake so ordered a single blueberry cake on the side. Next time, I will skip the cake... it was very thin and there was no sweetness to it, even with the berries. Hubby had the Standard omelet and really like it. The potatoes were plentiful and not greasy. The toast was thick and fresh, with butter on the side (yay!). Went here a few weeks ago... found it to be big and cavernous, and a wierd table layout with large open areas. The floor was very dark concrete and worn, and the lighting poor, which did not give an inviting feel. IMO a fresh coat of lighter floor paint, equally dispersed tables and some better lighting could help improve the welcoming feel. Found service to be basic, food average in presentation, and portion size too small vs price being charged. IMO increasing portion size could help provide more value. There were fans noisily blowing cold air from ceiling at a high velocity, making it uncomfortable to sit in one position for long due to constant blast of cold air on head. Turning down the fans may address this. Overall while I didn't enjoy my dining experience, I believe there are things that could be changed which could improve the experience for others in the future. read more

Food is still very hit or miss, one sandwich can be completely different depending on the day. Beef melt is good but it comes to $27 with mushrooms and cheese on it which seems insane. Over $50 lunch for 2 sandwiches... unfortunately I can't afford that let alone tip on top of that so I guess I won't be going anymore. I stopped by Chef Big D's on my way home from whistler. The pics here on yelp looked good so why not try a brekkie fry up? Well once in I decided on a BLT sandwich instead, the portion was huge! I ate half the sandwich and half the fries and had a second round later that day. Definitely bang for your buck! Also, the speared pickle it came with was soooo good I asked if it was house made but they order them ( too bad I would've bought some haha) We had great service, plenty of coffee refills and with the reduced capacity it felt safe during the pandemic. Well you don't really enter a diner with a name like Chef Big D's and expect fine dining (but if you do, good on ya). Chef Big D's (get your mind outa the gutter)was our choice for lunch today. I've read many reviews on this restaurant and a lot was mentioned about poor service, but our server was great. I was kinda hoping for some sass or an eye roll, but nope! When my veggie burger was placed in front of me, I was thinking 'WHAT is that??'? I was referring to the huge roasted red pepper on it. It was one of the best veggie burgers I've had. Roasted red pepper, arugula, avocado, and garlic mayo. Sooo frickin good. Fries were also delicious home cut fries. Loved it. Nothing vegan on the menu. I decided to order pancakes with apple and cinnamon, along with a black coffee. Coffee was actually quite good. The pancakes however left much to be desired. Tasted super eggy and the maples syrup was definitely fake. Well, you get what you pay for. Low price sometimes yields low quality. Staff wasn't friendly and did not give us water, and had to be reminded (politely, of course) 3 times before they brought us any. I used to really enjoy going here, but owners seems to have changed, and so has the quality. I ordered a chicken sandwich, that had a processed chicken patty. The other parts of the sandwich were ok, but when the the protein tastes like styrofoam, the meal is pointless. The salad was good, but that's not the main event. This place is totally casual. First things first the law of the land here is you seat yourself at any table that is clean. There is no waiting to be seated. This gets a little tricky when there is a long line up and most of the tables are for 2. This happens often as this place is quite busy which is super understandable considering their food... The food here is simple but with a twist. The offerings are your standard sandwiches, soups and breakfast plates. But each one is uniquely kicked up a notch to make it better than you would expect. For instance in my picture is the chicken, ham and swiss sandwich made as a wrap. The chicken is not your average grilled chicken breast it packs a punch with the seasonings. I am not a fan of curry but they have subtly added an amount that makes me feel like this just wouldn't be as good without it. It's these tiny touches that push the food into the next level. The Caesar salad here is a must try, it's rich, creamy with just a touch of garlic that ensures your not going to have to worry about your breath all day. I have tried many things here and probably my favourite is their breakfast wrap. Totally satisfies that hangover craving without all the grease. The service is okay. They are fairly hands off here you see them maybe 3 times a meal but that's okay and works for this place. Do not expect to be doted on but you won't be ignored either. You have to go up to a cashier to pay which is not my favourite way of doing things but oh well. All and all I have rarely heard anyone disappointed with the food here so if ambience isn't as important as a tasty meal you should go here. read more

I've lived in the S2S for over 10 years and this place is an institution. You might as well enjoy it one last time because they've shot themselves in the foot by executing the most drastic price gouging I've ever seen from a small town business, so today was the last time I'll ever go there. Prices have increased across the board by approximately 20-25%, which is HUGE. The berry pancakes went from $8.95 to $13. The omelettes went from $11.95 to $15!! This puts them priced above Timberwolf AND Fergies, where both restaurants serve way better food. I think maybe the owners of Chef Big D's got tricked into an identity crisis because they were so busy this summer, but maybe they didn't realize it was only because Fergies burned down. Once they reopen in 2019, there won't be regular line ups anymore, and few people will be willing to pay their Big Dollars for their dismal service. read more

A chaotic start but satisfying end. Rule 1: Sit at any table that is clean and prepped. On a Sunday afternoon around 11:30pm you would hope staffing would be sufficient but there was a clear insufficiency. There was only one waitress on the floor responsible for helping all the customers, delivering food, and cleaning up tables because the other waitress was tied up on the till helping a line up of 10+ patrons paying for their meal. Due to this situation, tables weren't being cleaned which meant no one waiting at the door could sit - because the rule is, Sit at any clean table and then you will be served. A lot of people behind us were confused and getting impatient with the disorganization. Finally after 25 minutes, the staff at the till was done and was able to bust some tables. If we disregarded this glitch in the system, service and food was great! Our server was quick to get our order and serve us water once we sat down. I ordered the Veggie Usual ($10). I chose the whole wheat toast (among other choices of white and sourdough) but the butter, peanut butter, marmalade, and various jams made me eat it all up. My scrambled eggs were fluffy and not over cooked. The "hashbrowns" were more like potato chips - I think I had a dud batch because mine were super crispy and hard, I wish they were more soft potato with a crispy outside, which my friend had. The tomato, avocado and fruit were fresh and a perfect accompaniment. My boyfriend ordered the breakfast burrito, he enjoyed it - a tortilla packed full of scrambled eggs, cheese, mushrooms, and sausages. The sign about the "attack waitress" is accurate. This place had the worst service I have ever experienced (food was good, but not good enough to make up for the horrible service). Most of the waitresses seemed nice, except for the one we got, who was extremely rude. She seems to forget that customers pay for their meals, which in turn pays her wage. She should be nicer to people. My friends and I were regulars, and won't be going back. P.S. Not the same Big D's that was a tradition for so many years. Since the new owners took over I have tried 4 meals, three omeletes and a burger. All were less than acceptable meals for a professional kitchen. Based on home cooking it was OK but not as a meal in a real restaurant. The fries are excellent and I would go there for the fries only. I called the owner and explained why we will not be returning. He promised to makes changes and hopefully he will. Was going through Squamish and wanted to stop in for a quick bite to eat. Decided to check Chef Big D's out since it had decent reviews and we really didn't want your typical chain restaurant for breakfast. It's a seat your own self restaurant and It was extremely busy so tables were not cleared and ready for patrons to sit at. We waited a few minutes before finally the waitress allowed us to move two small cleared tables together to accommodate our party of 5. Our waitress was very nice and accommodated our minor food requests. Food was delicious and made us feel like we made the right choice on stopping here to eat! Give it a try! read more

We stopped for lunch in Squamish while on Vacation. Chef Big D's looked like a good place for a reasonable meal. It was very busy at noon and a large proportion of the clientele seemed to be locals which is always a good sign. The service was very good. I had a BLT and when I asked for it on sourdough bread I was given a choice of regular sourdough, cranberry sourdough or cheese and jalapeno sourdough (all homemade). My husband had a beef dip. When he couldn't decide between Caesar salad or fries our waitress said "Why not have halve and halve". A great ideal. The sandwiches and salad were really good, made with nice fresh ingredients and very generous portions. The fries could have used a bit more time in the fryer. Every single step in the process moved at a glacial pace, and our server was giving us hostile looks and audible sighs from the outset with no justification. Combined with an environment that feels like a dim garage, the overall dining experience was unpleasant. The food was good - I had a turkey sandwich and the soup of the day, a Manhattan clam chowder. Simple, but both hit the spot, especially the soup. Although good, the food *did not* make up for the other unpleasant aspects of the experience. read more
