Great value for money. Very tasty and authentic food. The posters can be a little off putting to look at and is very overwhelming. The lighting is quite dingy and I think the place is due a refurbish. I will definitely revisit but would only recommend this place some.

Indian veg has been a long established restaurant in Angel on Chapel market, opened in 1985 and still successfully running today. Although set up very much like a canteen with its simple green cramped layout, it's will probably be one of the most memorable vegetarian Indian you'll go to serving a large variety of delicious vegan and vegetarian dishes, self service buffet style and costing only £6.50 whilst being surrounded by walls covered with strong ethics posters about animal cruelty, being vegetarian and some with more factual information about food. It's like no other vegetarian Indian restaurant I've been to which gives it that bit of unique charm. It's a very relaxing no fuss place with not even music playing giving a sense of tranquility or for some the silence can be too much to handle. We were pretty much seated straight away and from there it's pretty much help yourself to the homely cooked vegetarian dishes in the buffet area. Staff were quite absent but somehow made me more comfortable reaching for seconds and even thirds. They were very helpful when needed, like pouring out tap water when you ask. The buffet area was divided between starters which included onion bhaji and fried vegetables, Mains consisted of vegetarian and vegan curries such as paneer with peas curry and mixed vegetable curry. Also a wide selection of sides such as aloo peas, mixed dal, bread salad and spicy potato mashed and all can be eaten with brown rice or pilau rice.On the other side were all the raw salads such as carrot and white cabbage and red and white onion salad and the healthy option of fruit as a dessert. To be honest, the dishes changes quite frequently as last time I went they also had poppadoms. Also there is a longer list of desserts but that's on a separate menu where you will have to pay extra. Everything I had (which was pretty much everything) was lovely and homely. All seasoned perfectly, wholesome and flavoursome. You must try the spicy mashed potatoes which were just incredibly fluffy and very well spiced and out the mains I enjoyed the paneer peas the best with the added cheese, giving it that extra creamy touch. Everything was quite mild so suitable for most palates. Like I said before, don't feel bad about asking for tap water even at the low prices. They are more than happy to serve you it if you ask. There is also a huge selection of bottle drinks at the front but even better is a whole menu of homemade drinks with vegan options such as soya mango lassi. Indian Veg is a restaurant I highly recommend for everyone. Even though it's vegetarian I didn't feel like I was missing out. It's so budget friendly as well offering a self service buffet 7 days a week, both lunch and dinner.

I've been coming here on and off for 20 years. That makes feel really old but also really consistent. The food is good as ever and in the 20 years I've been coming the price has only increased by ONE POUND! I would go so far as to say that it's cheaper to eat here than it is to eat at home. There's no alcohol on sale, but you're welcome to bring your own.

We went here on a whim, because it was close to our hotel, but discovered a unique and quirky little eating house. The clientele was all ages and socially diverse as well. Food was cooked homestyle and was a decent variety of vegetables, dal, several salads and four kinds of rice. The bread option was only pooris, but they are everyone's favorite! At 7.95 for all you can eat, it excellent valued. They do sell desserts separately and the dessert menu is quite varied. They're reasonably priced as well. We filled up on the food, so did not get dessert. Next time, maybe I'll try a pistachio Kulfi!

Sorry reviewers this place now charges £5.50 gasp!!! They also no longer serve alcohol but are cool about you bringing your own (no corkage fee) Whats to say that hasn't already been said in the 2 and 3 star reviews? If you're poor, hungry and cold, head for this place - It's a bargain. Be prepared for the preachy veggie propaganda that plasters the walls, as I pointed out in another review of this place the one FACT they forgot to mention is that the Indian sub-continent has one of the highest levels of diabetes on the planet.

The restaurant has gotta be like 4x the size of Carnaby. Not just that, the ambience is way better here. The tables are way more spaced out, so you don't feel super cramped. The open space helps negate the strong Indian spices that emanate from the kitchen. And it just feels way more comfortable. Anyways, our reservation was right at the tail end of the breakfast menu hours and right before the regular menu began, so we were able to get a Sausage & Egg Naan Roll to start. Also had the Lamb Biryani, Goan Monkfish Curry, Mutton Pepper Fry, and Murgh Malai. I mean basically everything at Dishoom is great, and this was no exception. Service was fantastic. We started with the okra fries, which were decent but nothing special. The garlic naan was surprisingly plain and lacked the strong garlic flavor I was expecting. The grilled masala prawns were quite small and tasted just okay. I also ordered the Chicken Ruby, but it reminded me of a basic butter chicken recipe that I've made at home. The biggest disappointment was the famous Black Daal. Since it's one of Dishoom's signature dishes, I expected something exceptional, but I found it overrated and not particularly memorable. The highlight of the meal was the roti wrap, which I did enjoy. I appreciated that the chai comes with free refills, which was a nice touch. Overall, I think Dishoom is overrated. Maybe it's because I prefer bolder, spicier flavors, but the food felt quite mild and didn't justify all the praise I'd heard. I'm glad I tried it, but I don't see myself returning.

For starters, we had the prawns and veggie samosas. Prawns were good and my family enjoyed the veggie samosas. Please not there are only 2 to an order. Entrees included black lentils w/garlic naan and chicken biryani. One can't handle spice and is lactose intolerant, and she was sniffling through the whole meal lol. The black lentils were good but the full flavor wasn't there and it wasn't as creamy as I've had in the past. The best ones I've had were in Thailand, but this didn't even come close. For both the lentils and the biryani, we had to add salt to try to enhance the flavor. We decides to give dessert a try and it was just okay. Initially we planned on order the gulag jamun, but it came with Cornish (vanilla) ice cream and I wanted pistachio. They were very inflexible and would not swipe out the ice cream even though they physically have to put the vanilla scoops on top. Overall, we wouldn't be back here. Upon entering, your eye is immediately drawn to the myriad movie posters on the walls and to the lively Indian music videos playing on TV. I especially liked the many murals that dot the restaurant. For our party of 6, we ordered a variety of dishes to share along with 3 cocktails and a beer for the adults. All Of the cocktails were refreshing, tasty and were made with fresh fruit and/or herbs. Of the 3 cocktails we sampled, we liked the Ginger Refresh the best. The Elderflower & Strawberry Refresh and Mango Mojito were just as delicious. The Mojito uses fresh mango purée so be sure to stir well to incorporate the fruity yumminess! Let's talk about what we ate! Although the portion sizes are small to medium size, we felt that the 9 dishes we chose were satisfying for our party of 6. Everything we tried was delicious. Some of the stand out dishes were: tandoori paneer, chana, lamb biryani, spicy butter chicken and kurkuri bhindi.

I feel like all my friends who've been to London have come back talking about this place, and I'm happy to join their ranks. Dishoom was also one of a handful of dining options recommended by my hotel concierge for a party of 11, including kids. Booking was easy, via SevenRooms, no phone calls or emails necessary. It's a large restaurant, and part of a popular chain--I guess they have things figured out. The space was great, open and casual, exposed ceilings and eclectic decor. Lots of fans, which my three-year-old appreciated. Service was friendly and attentive. I started my lunch with a drink, a refreshing green India Gimlet, gin and Rose's lime with celery bitters and fresh dill. I also tried and liked a sip of the New Permit Room Old-Fashioned, a slightly sweet cocktail with coconut-washed bourbon, Pedo Ximénez sherry, and Medjool date liqueur. There was only one menu available for a party of our size, a pre-set family-style group feast for eight adults, to which we added a pre-ordered platter of lamb chops. I loved the variety of dishes that came with this meal, and every one of them was ridiculously delicious. (There was less available for the three small American children, but they loaded up on hotel breakfast and snacked on naan and colorful puffed crackers.) The first round brought trays loaded with keema pau, okra fries, and bhel, along with lime, cilantro, and sauces for serving. The keema pau was incredible, probably my favorite dish of our lunch, if in part because it was 100% new to me. It was a spicy, aromatic blend of minced lamb and peas with dill and lindi pepper, served with toasted, buttered buns to make little sliders. So much flavor, it almost explained, by itself, why the British could never leave India alone. The okra fries were warm and crispy, and I loved the bhel, a crunchy snack of puffed rice, peanuts, and Bombay Mix tossed with pomegranate, tomato, onion, lime, tamarind, and mint. The main course was another giant spread: chicken ruby, house black daal, awadhi jackfruit biryani, and chilled broccoli salad, plus our charred lamb chops, with sides of roti, naan, and raita. The chicken ruby was the highlight here, a fragrant, comforting curry with tender chicken in a buttery makhani sauce. The house black daal is a Dishoom signature, and it was lovely, cooked for over 24 hours. The biryani was fluffy and nice, studded with jackfruit, barberries, and sultanas. The broccoli salad was a fresh hit of green, enhanced with pistachio, mint, red chillies, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, dates, and lime. The lamb chops made for a hearty entrée with a lot of flavor, the lamb marinated, grilled, and finished with Kashmiri chilli sauce. The thin, griddled roomali roti and the fresh-baked naan were both great accompaniments, as was the minty, cucumbery raita. For dessert, we had a choice of kulfi, creamy ice pops available in mango, pistachio, or malai, the original flavor touched with caramel. All three were superb, so cold and milk, easy to throw down the hatch. This was, it turned out, an enormous feast, but everything was so delicious and well balanced that I didn't notice how much I was eating until I got up. I was still full several hours later, when we went to dinner. If you want to eat Indian food in London, you should definitely find your nearest Dishoom. It's a wonderful restaurant, with top-notch food and no hassle. I certainly intend to go again.

The restaurant's wall was decorated with various historical photographs, and right above our table was a photo of Vancouver, titled "Well-dressed Sikhs walking along the street in Vancouver, Canada c. 1908." Although over 100 years ago, I immediately recognized the location -- the corner of Granville and Hastings. How coincidental is that, to be thousands of miles away from home in a different continent, and to come across a photograph of the very street corner I cross multiple times a week! I don't recall what my husband had (a chicken dish), but I had Acharri Murgha ("chicken curry cooked in a traditional pickling spice mix") and it was delicious! Both my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal -- it was a taste of home! I also had a couple of glasses of wine, but each glass was 250ml, so I was pretty tipsy. In the washroom, a woman, another tourist, started conversing with me, but she only spoke French, and despite being drunk and rarely speaking French, I was able to have a semi-coherent conversation (she was also a bit tipsy). I had a drunken conversation in French inside an Indian restaurant in England! Anyway, Punjab Restaurant is one of the best Indian restaurants I have been to, and it is no surprise that it has been around since 1946. [Yelp collections: Europe 2024; London, England]
