This place was underwhelming at best. Though I didn't expect top tier Indian, I fully expected it to rival other Indian places I've been to. For starters, we had the prawns and veggie samosas. Prawns were good and my family enjoyed the veggie samosas. Please not there are only 2 to an order. Entrees included black lentils w/garlic naan and chicken biryani. One can't handle spice and is lactose intolerant, and she was sniffling through the whole meal lol. The black lentils were good but the full flavor wasn't there and it wasn't as creamy as I've had in the past. The best ones I've had were in Thailand, but this didn't even come close. For both the lentils and the biryani, we had to add salt to try to enhance the flavor. We decides to give dessert a try and it was just okay. Initially we planned on order the gulag jamun, but it came with Cornish (vanilla) ice cream and I wanted pistachio. They were very inflexible and would not swipe out the ice cream even though they physically have to put the vanilla scoops on top. Overall, we wouldn't be back here. Our first night in London and hubby wants Indian food. We've all heard that you can find some of the best Indian food here. A last minute rezzie at Dishoom was a long shot, so we were pleasantly surprised to find Delhi Grill a few blocks away from our hotel. Please note that they are open on Sundays - even though the Yelp page says they are not. Hopefully, that info will be corrected soon. Upon entering, your eye is immediately drawn to the myriad movie posters on the walls and to the lively Indian music videos playing on TV. I especially liked the many murals that dot the restaurant. For our party of 6, we ordered a variety of dishes to share along with 3 cocktails and a beer for the adults. All Of the cocktails were refreshing, tasty and were made with fresh fruit and/or herbs. Of the 3 cocktails we sampled, we liked the Ginger Refresh the best. The Elderflower & Strawberry Refresh and Mango Mojito were just as delicious. The Mojito uses fresh mango purée so be sure to stir well to incorporate the fruity yumminess! Let's talk about what we ate! Although the portion sizes are small to medium size, we felt that the 9 dishes we chose were satisfying for our party of 6. Everything we tried was delicious. Tasty Food! Bad Service! Food is authentic and tasty. It was spicy but not too spicy. And everything was presented so nicely! Overall quantity was less than usual but was made up in the taste. Order the chicken makhani and lamb biryani (the meat was very tender and flavorful). Sadly, the service was a bit spotty. Bollywood posters adorn the wall with paper placemat menus and large paintings on the bathroom doors (and opposite the urinal) in this funky Indian restaurant. Beyond that it is a fairly standard affair. We got the Chicken Makhani (butter chicken) which was quite tasty and more-ish. Then we had the Tilapia Hariyali which I didn't enjoy at all, it tasted watered down and lacked any interesting flavours (that said my 2 year old ended up eating a lot of it!). We got the Garlic & Chili Naan and Pashwari naan, they were good (I haven't met a naan I don't like) but at the same time they were a bit lifeless (I really don't think I tasted any chili in the Garlic & Chili...). Service was pretty good, it was easy to get someone's attention and everyone was friendly. As far as the menu is concerned, there seemed to be a decent balance of well-known "classics" and obscure dishes. But you should definitely go for the later if you're looking for something traditional as the classics seem to be "adapted" quite a bit (and as a result, aren't quite spicy enough). Definitely my wife's favorite restaurant during our stay in London. She continues to rave about the chicken tikka makhni. It was pretty awesome. Borderline tickle the back of the throat spicy with a rich zesty curry. The butter chicken was so smooth. Amazing dish. I just ate lunch and I want to fly 10 hours to London and get me some. The lentils were a huge hit. I really couldn't believe how delicious they were. I mean, they are lentils. But oh what lentils. The mattar paneer was likewise delicious. It almost seemed like they seared the paneer before mixing it in with the peas. Really enjoyed the bite of it. Great service! Nice open and cheery space. read more

Our second visit to the Grill, and this one was better than the first which had already been surprisingly good. Different than your average Indian restaurant, so don't expect a huge long menu of hit and miss items. Instead, they have a smaller selection but everything is first rate. Tonight's standout was the spicy fish tikka tandoori... Moist spicy chunks of a white fish with a tasty char on them. But everything else was great too... Our party of four also shared the lamb samosas, chicken masala, lamb joganrash and bindi. With rice and naan, that was plenty to fill us all up. Service is quick and efficient, and they don't hustle you out the door if you want to chat for a bit. Music isn't deafeningly loud or annoying, and there is a bit of space between tables. It's been a long time since I've really been excited about a restaurant. This place is a gem! Hidden on Chapel Market, it invites you in by young waiters, a casual feel and great smells. The menu is small but great. I loved the chutneys--colorful, flavorful, and presented brilliantly. Everything we ordered was bursting with unique flavor and heat--cauliflower, chick peas, okra, spicy chicken, lamb chops. We were there early on a Saturday night (before a barnstorning gig by Frank Turner at the Roundhouse in Camden) so the place was empty bar one other couple. However, we were greeted warmly and enjoyed a very tasty, freshly cooked grill plate to share (lamb chops, koftas and chicken tikka) plus raita, a cucumber, onion and red pepper salad, lamb samosa, naan bread and poppadum to add extra crispiness. Delhi Grill is situated half way along Chapel Market in Islington and is definitely worth checking out. I've eaten here a few times since it first opened and again just a few days ago. Good to see the standard has remained consistently high. What separates Delhi grill from many other Indian restaurants, in my view, is a freshness in the dishes and flavours. The menu is fairly simple: 'from the tandoor' and 'from the pot' with some decent side dishes to accompany if desired. On this occasion I ordered the lamb rogan gosht which delivered on being super tender and well rounded depth of flavour. The dahl was as good as other good dahls I've had. The bhindi (okra) was simply prepared, green and fresh. The food here is also distinguished by a welcome lack of lack of oiliness in the dishes that is sometimes found in other places. A nice touch was a selection of four tiny freshly prepared toppings that was provided which included some simple chopped small green marinated chillis, a beetroot based smooth chutney and a zingy coriander one. These boosted the freshness quotient even further. On previous visits we also enjoyed poppadoms which were also distinct for the range of fresh chutneys that accompanied them. The restaurant itself has a nice casual feel with a collage of Indian newspapers and posters on the walls and the guys that work here are really friendly and attentive. read more

This place is somewhere between 4-5 stars. Not everything is perfect always (I've had specials here that missed the mark...but on the up side, when they asked and I was feels cozy enough to answer honestly, they actually wanted to know what had missed and took it seriously). Where to start? The chutneys/toppings for the poppadom are all amazing. I think I singlehandedly finished off the beetroot one, it was that good. Honestly, I probably could have made a meal of just the chutneys and a naan. More on the naan in a moment... Ok, let's get one thing out of the way: this isn't the kind of restaurant where you can be uptight about the flow of food arriving and order that it arrives to your table. It says clearly enough on the menu that Tandoor items come out prior to Pot dishes, so either plan accordingly or sit tight and snack on more poppadom and chutney until your friends give you the side eye for being a glutton. These are the dishes I had the pleasure of sampling: *Vegetable Pakora: crisp, light, not oily, fresh and still tasting of vegetables. Delightful. *Vegetable Samosa: delicious and crunchy shell with smooth and spicy filling. *Potato Somethingorother: ok, not the official name, obviously. It was sliced and battered potatoes with coriander mixed in. Again, nice and fresh with a discernible potato flavor and texture left. Yummy. *Peshwari naan: the best I have ever had. No sultanas (THANK YOU!!) and the perfect balance of sweet and savory. I may or may not have slathered it with the beetroot concoction that I seem to be mildly obsessed with. Don't judge. *Pilau rice: I won't get excited. It was rice. Nice rice, but still just rice. *Saag aloo: so, so spicy and fresh. Unlike any saag aloo I have ever had, in a good way. *Chicken Karahi: wonderful chunks of tender chicken in a thinner sauce flavored with onion and coriander. One thing I want to note about the food is that, unlike other Indian restaurants I have been to, the dishes all taste distinctly unique. In the past, I have never been that thrilled with Indian because most everything tastes very similar to me. At Delhi Grill, each dish was unique and well-prepared. Definitely going back. read more

Short story: not bad, go if you're around it. On a business visit in London my partner and I needed a quick dinner around the Islington Doubletree hotel. We opted for this small Indian restaurant. We actually ordered quite a bit of food, and most of it was good. Pappadoms: skip them. They are average minus and I've eaten way better servings of this popular crispy nosh. Chutney rack: a series of 5 small glass jars with dips. One is just chopped up onion with some herbs, but no other flavoring. The other 4 are all on the sweet side. There was a beet mash, chickpea based sauce, onion and bell pepper jam, and a flavored yogurt dip. All lacked flavor and salt and I was wishing for at least one to be spicy or counter the overall sweetness. We ordered the grill for 2 dish. It includes 2 pieces of tikka chicken - yum! 2 kebabs- yum! And 2 small lamb-chops - yummy. The entire platter was very tender and super spicy so consider that if you order it. Worth the £11.95 we paid. We were full but we had initially ordered other stuff, so, then we had the naan and the dhaba chicken. Spicy!!!! but good. Now the part I liked less: £31.90 for Indian food in small portions. A bit on the costly side for the simple setting of this restaurant. Service was plain but not bad per se. Ended my last night in London on a high note! Still buzzing after eating at Delhi Grill. Super cozy and such a cute place. Staff were friendly and very knowledgeable about the ingredients of each menu item. Menu items are clearly labeled for both vegans and vegetarians. There are also a few vegan items that do not contain any nuts. My dining partner and I also ordered vegetable samosas which were smaller than the ones I've had before, but nonetheless still delicious. We were happy with the portion sizes of the other dishes but please keep in mind that main dishes do not come with rice and there is no house chutney, poppadom, or naan so you will need to order it separately if you want these items. Nut friendly/vegan chutney include puréed beets; chickpeas; and onion. Other items in chutney rack are mango based with nuts and yogurt based non-vegan. The waiter told me that the naan dough may have nuts in them so please proceed with caution if you have an allergy. Thanks for a delightful evening, Delhi Grill. We will be back! read more

After reading such awesome reviews from some esteemed Qypers, and chatting to the nice people behind Dehli Grill's twitter account, I was really excited to come here. But it wasn't the five star experience that I was hoping for. That's not to say that it was bad. it wasn't at all. I had a very enjoyable meal here (and it's handily positioned by Angel Station, and the Cinema, where we headed after). The menu is short, but everything we tried tasted good. Lamb chops weren't as good as I was expecting, but the lamb rogan josht was excellent. I couldn't feel my ears properly afterwards. Slightly more expensive than I was expecting. Our meal actually cost us £18 a head (with beer). I don't know of many Indian restaurants in Angel and I'm certain I'll come back here again. The staff are friendly, and I like it, even though it doesn't quite hit top marks for me. read more

Refreshingly small menu that doesn't overwhelm you. One of the best takeaway packaging in London! They even give you chutney for your complimentary papadum. And I definitely recommend getting takeaway, unless you don't mind the very strong (albeit delicious) smell and heat coming at you from the kitchens. read more

Seeing as traditional Dhabas in India have their own specialities, when we ordered at Delhi Grill we asked the server to bring us enough food for three people and choose his favourites (as long as his favourites included the slow cooked chick peas). With only a few beers or bottles of wine to choose from, we went with a very reasonable £14 bottle of Pinot Noir. Although we loved everything from the beautiful and fresh chutneys to the traditional Tarka Dahl, I'd say the stand out dishes were the Keema Aloo (incredibly flavourful minced lamb) and the Channa or 'chickpeas slow cooked in a coriander, garlic and tomato masala.' To get your meat fix I recommend the Delhi Grill which is 4 chicken tikkas, 2 sheekh kebabs and 2 lamb chops all hot off the grill, and definitely big enough for three people to share at only £6.50. One thing on the menu that certainly cannot be forgotten is the fresh so fresh you watch it being made from your table handmade roti, which is served warm and of course is ideal for soaking up all the sauces left on your plate. Don't leave without ordering the pistachio kulfi, a traditional Indian ice cream that is a bit denser and creamier (and therefore tastier) than regular ice cream and topped with crumbled pistachios and chili flakes for a fabulous explosion of flavours. The food and the décor for that matter was delicious and I highly recommend Delhi Grill to anyone looking for a casual Indian restaurant with character and charm. All of the dishes were fresh and although not incredibly light, they were not covered in oil like many of the Indian meals I have had before. All of the items on the menu are meant for sharing and priced between £1.95 and £6.95 so you can keep ordering until you've had your fill perfect for a group of friends looking for an inexpensive night out. If I was a lamb, I would cut off my lower half and give it to Delhi Grill to turn into some kind of tasty dish so that I could eat myself, safe in the knowledge that I couldn't be any tastier. Deli Grill is easily my favourite Indian restaurant. Easily. From the first time I tasted those little lamb-chop starters and that beetroot dipping thing that they give you with the poppadoms, I knew it was going to be special. So far, I've eaten pretty much everything on their menu and their isn't a weak link. The specials are just that. The last two I had were egg curry (not the kind of thing that if usually go for, but well worth branching out) and the handi gosht, which was on the bone, which must have been seasoned with ground delicious and marinated overnight in a blend of fresh awesome. The restaurant floor is over seen by friendly, attentive and knowledgeable staff, who honestly want to know that you've enjoyed your meal, which adds another pleasant dimension to the dining experience. Also the food is cheeeeeeaaaaap. If you can spend more than £15 per head (excluding drinks), then you are a bigger eater than I. But your not, so you won't. read more

Mr Shake and I headed to the Dehli Grill the other night and found it buzzing with activity. We had high hopes. We weren't disappointed. The menu is split in two - you can order sizzling spiced offerings from the tandoori grill or you can go for some of their lovingly slow cooked curries. We had a combination of the two and found the meat well done with lots of flavours, the curries aromatic, but not so hot that ingredients get lost. It's a very relaxed and slightly chaotic atmosphere, I've deducted a star because the loud bollywood music was a bit too loud. I am a bollywood fan, but I'm a bigger fan of conversation. Bless them, they undercharged us on the bill and we (nice honest people that we are) pointed it out, but they said that as the mistake was theirs they'd deduct it from the bill. Thoroughly nice thing to do we thought. The flavours are fresh and will satisfy the most ardent fan of indian food and it is very good value, definitely worth a visit. read more

Amazing food. Went there with a colleague without knowing anything about the restaurant. The waiter asked if we had a reservation so I guess it gets very busy at times. The waiter wasn't very happy to give us recommendations but he did give some general directions. We ordered more or less randomly and it came great. The grilled meat and the curry with naan bread. It tasted amazing. Miles better than any curries I've eaten in the last few months. As good as I've seen. Wow! A simple, yet classy and clean place with great food and great service, all for a surprisingly low price. My wife and I ordered samosas, a chutney tray, naan, two main dishes and a bottle of wine. Everything was excellent. We were completely stuffed and very happy with everything, including the service. After a 10% tip our total bill was £35, a real bargain! Highly recommend this great place for Indian cuisine. read more

I wanted to rate this place 5 stars but they are not as good as they used to be... still food is quite decent and as name implies best for the grills. We actually ordered one grill and one stew and the stew was nothing special. But the grill, as usual was amazing. If you like homestyle indian food, you must try this place, there are only a few dishes on the menu, but all are slow cooked for 4 hrs, which makes the lamb/chicken melt in your mouth..fantastic! There is also a really laid back young guy making the roti fresh in front of you. Great dips for the poppadoms.Cool decor and nice staff. I gave it 4 instead of 5 only because the staff sometimes get the delivery of the food a bit out of whack (serving one main at least 15mins before the rest and not saying anything) Not a big deal, guess they are teething issues. I ate at Delhi Grill with friends. We commonly go out for indian food in London, and the dishes were good, but not noticeable great compared to other places we have been. I wasn't a huge fan of the restaurant's atmosphere and we had to wait a while for someone to take our order even though the restaurant was fairly empty. I really didn't like how the dishes came at separate times - naan came earlier than the dishes so it was cold by the time the rest of the food got to our table. I found the restaurant to be fairly expensive for what you get. read more

Couldn't wait to have some Indian in London, so when I saw dehli grill was highly rated an right next to a tube stop, I jumped on the opportunity. It lived up to expectation. My friend and I had the butter chicken and lamb biryani. Both were excellent, but the butter chicken was the superior dish. It came as described and the buttery flavor was really discernible. Everything was so good, I ordered the chicken tikka plate after I finished and that too was fantastic. Only just opened last year, Delhi Grill in Chapel Market has already got itself a fantastic reputation for decent Indian style street food. Run by brothers Aman and Preet Grewal and using all family recipes, this little restaurant really has a unique feel and style. As I entered for dinner on a Friday evening, I was bombarded by an array of amazing smells coming from the kitchen which got my juices flowing, even before I'd taken my seat. The menu, which is decorated with photos of real images of street food around India, is very modest but has a good mixture of dishes, along with the monthly specials menu. I choose the Lime and Coriander Lamb Chops and Chilli Chicken Wings to start, both of which were full of flavour and were accompanied by some very colourful handmade chutneys. My main was a very fragrant Rogan Gosh with steamed rice and a nan bread, it too was full of flavour and tasted fresh with the right amount of heat and spice. I found a hair in one of my appetizers after I was almost completely finished (No biggie...this happens all the time in the food industry...ppl have hair...ppl cook food). I notified them, not expecting much as I almost ate the whole thing. But they were very apologetic, brought me a whole new appetizer, and took it off my bill.
