The volunteers here are usually pretty friendly. Try to avoid this place when they're doing free adoptions, though. Parking is limited and you will probably have to park on the grass. They have a good system as far as navigation goes; cats on the left side, dogs on the right. There is an area outside where you can meet with the dogs and let them get some air. You are able to open up the cat cages and let them roam. We have gone twice on free adoption days for a cat. The first time was a mess -- people everywhere, limited volunteers and little explanation on the cards on the cages. For instance, you'll see an animal that says, "Available." Try to make sure you read the card before interacting or bonding with them. Animals not listed as available likely won't be able to be adopted, but they group these animals together (in the cat room) and there is often nobody around for an explanation. The second time we went, there were a total of three cats available for adoption. One that I was interested in had been attacked by something and when I asked more about it, they didn't have any information, despite being cleared to be adopted. It was a little disappointing. I've never made it further than this as far as adoption, but hope to some day. Being as this is a government-run facility, I don't expect the world. They do their best with what they have. read more

My wife and I went to the shelter to look at a pup we saw online. Unfortunately we were about 45 minutes too late. So we decided to look around. Halfway through the 2nd kennel we found a pretty girl just waking up from her nap The place was total chaos with barking dogs. She just sat up and wagged her tail. We had her brought outside and we hung with her for about an hour No pressure from the staff at all. We finally decided that we had stumbled on probably the perfect pup. She's home with us now and I do believe she is very happy. She was surrendered by a homeless person who could not care for her anymore. So we will shower her with love and kisses for as long as she is with us. read more

We were simply looking at the dogs in kennel 3, specifically near Lobo. She comes in and says "Yeah this is what we're not gonna do" and goes on a rant in a rude manner. Many other people were sticking hands in, getting near, but we were the only ones getting yelled at. I told her she could've said it nicer and she states "Well it's loud in here, so it's the nicest i can say it". This is not the first time service here has been terrible, people here are quite rude and ruin other's days. She also stated she would kick us out, she went over the top. If employee have bad days they should know how to deal with those feelings, not take it out on customers read more

I hate giving bad reviews, but when we went here to bring a kitten that we found, and needed help, we went to the door, and when you walk up to the shelter, it REEKS. I know animal shelters might have some smells, but this smell was horrid, and it was strong; it smelled like all types of animal feces in a pile inside. Then, we had the kitten, and instead of just taking him, they ended up having us drive up into some line at the door, and we waited over 30 minutes until the lady would let us park up by the door, so she could take the kitten. We had 2 people in front of us, and a few in the back. They're slow, and the place smells horrid. The line was insane; they wouldn't take the kitten. This place seems like one to mistreat their animals. I suggest NOT taking your pets here, or pets you found for adoption. This place is not to be trusted. I suggest not going here. read more

My family and I gave this place two chances to give a cat a new home, and both times, they failed miserably. My wife and I have two daughters, ages 4 and 1, and we live in a nice house in a nice neighborhood. One of our cats passed away over a year ago, and we decided that we were ready to adopt a new kitty. Also, with our youngest daughter being one, this would be our first pet adoption as a family. Two weeks ago, we went there on a Sunday and fell in love with an orange cat named Turnip. She wasn't available to adopt until 1:30 the next day, but we went to the front desk and filled out all of the paperwork. They said that they would call me at 1:30 the next day when she was ready, and then I would come pick her up. We went home, thought of a new name, and made arrangements for our new family member. The next day, I went to my office with a cat carrier, waiting for that phone call. 1:30 came, and they never called me. I tried calling them, but I couldn't get past all of the voice automation. When my wife got off work at 5, we were about to drive over there to pick her up, but checked online, and she had already been adopted! We were heartbroken, and even e-mailed them asking them how that happened, because we had put in the paperwork to request her. They never responded. Nevertheless, today we gave them another chance. We got there and a manager named Carol led us back to the cat room. We went into the first cat room, and the volunteer said to let him know if we have any questions. So far, everything was great. After browsing through the first cat room, we moved on to the second. One of the volunteers, a young man with long hair and glasses, walked up to me and said "What brings you in today?" I said "We're just browsing, thank you." Then he gave me a run down of every cat in the room, when I didn't ask for it. I said "Okay, thank you." Then I moved on, and he followed me around the room. Every time I laid eyes on a cat, he told me all about that particular cat. I was thinking "Sir, I didn't ask for this, and I can read the information on the paper. Give me some space please." Then while he was talking to me, my 4-year-old opened one of the crates behind me and pet the cat. He said "Please watch your daughter!" I said "Okay, I'm sorry," and pulled her away from the crate. Then he said "Your daughter needs some hand sanitizer!" Now I was just flat out getting annoyed. I said "Fine, where's the hand sanitizer?" He led me over to it and I took it from him. While my back was turned getting the hand sanitizer, my daughter opened up another crate. Then the man snapped at me again "Again, you REALLY need to watch your children!" I was about to go off on him before my wife stepped in and said "Sir, we can handle our children, and we don't need your help!" Then he played the victim and put his hands up and said "Fine, have at it." I get that they have rules, but do they REALLY not expect children to open the doors and pet the cats? I was so annoyed with him that I said "Let's just go back to the first room." We went back to that room and did find a nice cat that we really liked. I was holding her, when suddenly Carol walked in. She startled that cat by walking in, and she jumped out my arms. I chased her down and picked her up, but Carol was already eye balling me, like it was MY fault that she jumped out of my arms. Then she said "Is everything okay?" I said "yes," then she just stood there watching us. She was obviously sent in because there was a problem. So I said "Did he send you in here to talk to me?" She asked me what happened, and I told her, and instead of saying that she'll have a talk with that volunteer, she lectured ME about being respectful toward the animals and the staff. I explained to her that we're a nice family who loves animals, and we didn't want any trouble, we just wanted to adopt a cat. She said "I understand that, I would just appreciate some respect," and walked out of the room. At that point, I was so angry with the staff that I said "Let's just get out of here." We drove to Speck's Pet Supplies down the road and paid $150 to adopt a beautiful four month old kitten. I appreciate what IACS does, adopting stray animals and giving them homes, but I am so sick and tired of them being so overdramatic and overprotective toward good families who are simply trying to adopt a cat. If they keep treating their customers like they did me today, then they're going to have a lot of homeless animals. If you want a new pet, then please look elsewhere! read more

The annual garage sale to raise money for the animal shelter took place in the large garage in the back of the property. The main building where the animals are kept was up front and we didn't go in. We heard they have lots of cats available for adoption, but we already have 2 beautiful cats and did not want to be tempted with another. The event appeared to be staffed by lots of volunteers and staff. Everyone was so helpful and nice. Lots of merch to look through, looking forward to next years event. read more

I hate having to do bad reviews, but this place is not to be trusted at all. I received a call from this shelter stating that my dog was lost. I called them back to see what was going on bc I allowed someone to take care of him, at least until I was able to. He has been through a lot since he was a puppy, and I stressed to them bc the last owner overdosed on him; I will be coming to get him to take him to someone within my family. He said I have until Thursday. I got a call today from the officer telling me that he allowed someone who knew the victim to adopt him. Mind you, I told him not to do this because everyone around the last owner was messed with drugs. I didn't want him with someone who I didn't know or anyone who knew the woman who overdosed in front of him. I wanted him near family so I could still see him. I never gave them permission to have him adopted. They did this on their own. He was with her because she was helping me take care of him. I am a domestic violence survivor, I needed someone I could trust to take him in so I knew he was good. This place has horrible customer service, and should not be trusted. I marked Sebastian as stolen (his chip) bc the worker at the shelter allowed a random stranger to adopt him without my permission. So I came here looking for a pet. I ended up with my cat "Gina" now Penelope. The people there were so nice and the adoption ended up with zero fee. When Penelope was picked up she was a stray and had a respiratory infection and lots of fleas. They treated her and spayed her before I took her home. Additionally, they gave me a folder and handout on what to expect with a cat and how to treat them. This was so helpful when she came home and it gave me the knowledge of how to integrate her to my home. Way better experience then with another local humane shelter. read more

My boyfriend and I came here to look for a furry friend today. We met Strawberry during our first walk through and she did everything in her power to get our attention. I insisted that we take her out to play, and although she didn't care about our presence, we fell in love with her! We left with her same day (today) to take her home forever where she immediately turned into a cuddle bug. She follows us everywhere, cuddles, plays, and is very well trained. It is clear she doesn't need any additional training other than socialization. Not only did we notice a clean facility, but they took very good care of our girl! She came home and opened right out of her shell. She had been there for months but acted like she had been with us forever upon arrival home. This shelter has a lot of outdoor space and the faculty was nice, attentive, and clearly cared so much about eachanimal. We met so many sweet dogs and this is a great shelter to adopt from. Most of the dogs are pits, but they have a few that can pass in an apartment. If you own a home, a pit is the way to go! Strawberry is obviously part pit, but we would own 8 pits if we didn't live in an apartment. Adopt don't shop...and do it from here! Update: one year later and Belle (previously named Strawberry) is doing so well! She is the best. She was pretty much fully trained when we got her. We've only taught her to shake, stay until called, and worked on her walking skills on a leash. read more

A year I found myself in a situation that left everything for me in the air. I had two dogs and a cat. 1 pittie mix and mal. I reached out to rescues to no avail. It was a shitty situation. After speaking with people and my vet about alternatives I reluctantly took the mal here. The intake coordinator to be frank was the worst on the planet to the point that I seriously consider going off her. Her constant huffing and puffing and rolling her eyes. Underhanded disrespectful comments were absolutely insulting and uncalled for. She has no respect of the person that she sits across from and has become horrifically desensitized to people! I get it, she sees the worst in people, Here's my thing I haven't always in my low... and after this- I've halted all of my and my companies donations here. I have spend countless hours participating with event to support this place! I've ran small fundraisers with companies I worked for, people in my neighborhood just to bring food and blankets... I thought as a last resort and with time running out that day this is the last chance for me! I came here bc the rescues were full, and I knew that she would reach out to a rescue and she did thanks to Northern Dogs rescue she was re-homed. But I had to take her to the shelter in order for them to get her. I don't know why, I was just told they were full and they were accepting dogs. I tried screening people myself to re-home her and a couple people(thankfully) brought her back saying she was too much! My pittie mix would've never stood a chance in this place! I sent him to be with family. But they lived in an apartment. My cat was given to me by my dad before he passed away- took him back to my mothers. Not all people that bring their animals to the shelters are horrible but the way she treated me will last and I won't donate a dime or an article of anything ever again. This was a horrible experience that will last forever. I won't volunteer any more, I won't let my daughters who spend their summers back in Indiana volunteer either. I/we can work with rescues that realize not all people are crap and help them make a difference one animal at a time. And yes, this is my way of getting back at them for the way I was treated... We had adopted delta from the shelter well when we were on vacation apparently our close family friend must've let her out or she accidentally got out but we were not informed that that had been what had happened.. so we went back in the shelter to adopt a kitten and had the feeling to walk thru the dog kennels and delta was in kennel 3. We talked to an older blonde lady at the desk and threatened to put us on the do not adopt list because we had been told our dog had passed away when in reality that didn't happen... how were we supposed to know... Words cannot express how thankful I am for this place! About a month ago, my dog got out our our gate and went missing. We immediately noticed and went after her. My husband, me and my mother, went searching for her for hours. IACC got several calls about a dog being hit by a car with a severe wound. Their team searched and actually found her before we could get to her. Our dogs tag was old and IACC could not find her information (she wasn't chipped either). I posted her information on Indy Lost Pets and IACC got the information and called me immediately. When I came they let me know that my dog Mellie had been severely hit and that the wound was terrible. I went to see my dog and Dr. Kats was operating on her and wanted to do everything in her power to save our dog! Because of her quick action and willingness to save our dog and her badly hit leg, our dog is recovering extremely well! There was concern that she may need to be amputated because of the skin damage, a possible shoulder fracture, and wrist fracture but she is walking on her front left leg and her skin is healing very well! From the front desk assistant (Terri), to the ACO (Megan), to the technicians (Shela and Jacee), everyone last person I came in contact with at IACC was SO caring and comforting as I was so devastated about our sweet pup! I could not believe how amazing they were and also how much they wanted help us save our baby! The services that IACC provides is above and beyond! This is not a place that euthanizes every animal that comes through the door! The opposite is true, they fight SO HARD to save animals! I am so thankful for this place and LOVE the services they provide. By the way, the center is very clean and there were dogs outside playing in large spaces and many of them seemed so happy!!! I came here because of the positive reviews and what I saw was pure horror. We went into Kennel 1 and 2 and they were exactly what I expected. Clean, loud, and average for a shelter. However, we stepped into Kennel 3 and it was a literal shitshow. The ground was covered in piss and flies everywhere. Each kennel was filthy covered in poop and these poor dogs looked like they had infections. There was poop in the dog bowls, their bed, the walls, everywhere. These dogs are forgotten about and we witnessed a worker cleaning a cage while we were in there. He slammed the door open and threw the poop covered bed on the to floor and just didn't give a fuck about these poor dogs. Some of the dogs in there were way too skinny literally skin and bones and I felt absolutely sad for these angels. read more

I had to email them multiple times to get the report. Every time I go into the shelter they try to tell me a different lie. We adopted our puppy on Thursday and we got just were able to pick him up today(Saturday) because he had to get neutered first. Well I called and nobody can seem to figure out which Noah's he was at !??? So I mean I know now what to do but I didn't know they can't have to much activity. And that is really hard with two puppies now? And I can't even find on his "so called new report" where it says he was neutered at??? Like I understand you guys are VERY VERY VERY UNDER STAFFED, and pretty much depending on your volunteers, BUT don't GO ON THE NEWS AND SAY WE ARE HAVING A $5 donation fee only to adopt a pet, and the day it first goes on and only have ONE ADOPTION CONSULTANT??? Unfortunately, I had to deal with this facility recently. A stray dog found me while I was working out in the community and after checking for a microchip and trying to find him a home, ACC was my last option. They were helpful and professional and took the little guy in. This place is miserable and I don't know how the hell anyone could work here. I appreciate them making it as easy as possible for me to surrender him, and I appreciate the employees doing what they can to try to alleviate a problem that is out of control. This is a government-funded city shelter, so keep your expectations in check and you'll have a nice experience. Speaking of expectations, here's what you should expect: noisy dog barking, a foul smell, witnessing other animals being surrendered, and all walks of life coming to adopt/shop. If you have a heart for animal rescue, you'll understand these are the animals who really need you. I came last week and left with a wonderful kitty for just $14. Yes, he had an upper respiratory infection but we were notified this at time of adoption and an inexpensive antibiotic provides a quick cure. All staff members we encountered were friendly and the entire adoption process took around 90 minutes. Our new cat has been home with us for one week and has exceeded our expectations; we're very pleased with our decision to "shop" Animal Care & Control first! read more

I was informed the voice message instructing me to come in would have been too costly too change. I went home and did as instructed which garnered me immediate responses until all communication just stopped after choosing a dog. They were supposed to contact the dogs foster family for us to meet... that was 48hrs ago and they are supposed to get back to you within 24-48 hrs. I'm not happy at the moment at all. I hate to give them only three stars, because much of their problem is that they are SO understaffed and in desperate need of volunteers. If you are someone who lives a distance away and are considering adopting through this shelter, it would be much easier to find another shelter and would save you a lot of frustration. My complaints are that the website is never up to date, and there is no way to call and ask questions by reaching a person and not a machine. There is technically a way to reach a person by pressing 0, but I was left waiting through five minutes of ringing and had to hang up. And this was during their open hours. That being said, I love that they offer 'freedom for a day', where you can take a dog that has been in the shelter for 30+ days and go around town! read more

Yesterday my girlfriend and I came in looking to get a dog. We came across Strawberry (now Belle), and she would not let us walk past her cage. After taking her out to play with her, we realized that she was the one for us. After coming home with us, within minutes she opened up, started cuddling with us and her spunky personality started to come out. You would think she has been with us for months. This behavior is obviously a huge sign of how well the staff here treated her and how they treat the other dogs. The staff were all incredibly nice, and were so happy to see her come home with us. The kennels were very well kept, and there was ample outdoor room for the dogs to play. If you're looking to adopt a dog, this is the place to go. read more

I came here yesterday looking to adopt a dog. I knew it would be hard to find one in a shelter since apartments don't allow pit bulls but after walking through the kennels I found keeno (a pointer mix) and immediately knew I wanted to take him home. They took me out to the yard area to play with him for a little and he was extremely shy but I still decided to take him home and after filling out a few forms I was all set. He already had all of his shots and was ready to go because he was adopted once before but he was picked back up as a stray. It didn't take long for him to get used to me and he is extremely well behaved which I did not expect. I highly recommend adopting from here everyone is very helpful and the process is quick. I went around Indy to shelters today and all out of them all this was by far the Friendliest shelter I have ever been to, the outside walls were painted with bright colors with adorable animals also painted in bright colors, it is very secure in a way I felt safe pulling into the shelter. I adopted a dog named pork chop who I re-named Rocco. When I walked in to the shelter my first thought was when I saw the cat room in the main room as soon as you walk in, the cats had luxury looking furniture. To go to see the other cats and dogs you need a worker to go in with you it is very secure and safe for the dogs and you. They ask if it is your first time and if so they point to where you can go there are two dogs rooms and two cat rooms. The First dog room had many cute dogs in it, but I just did a brief walk trough then the second also a brief walk trough just looking at the dogs. I went back to the first dog room that's where I found pork chop, he is an Australian shepherd mixed with a hound it was his first day on the floor I feel very lucky I got the chance to get him, I asked a volunteer if I could meet with him outdoors they allowed us to and before we got to the door they let us walk him,, they had many outdoor kennels with a sheet on the roof to make it shady for the dogs they had little kiddie pool so they could swim in a little dog house that they can walk in if they wanted to a bench for people to sit on and many toys for the dog. We were also allowed to meet him inside because it was very hot. Inside we were allowed to play with him and give him treats. He already knew sit and shake. By this time we were already going to adopt him, and until Friday all adoptions at the IACC are free. Including a microchip spay/neuter and all vaccines. I was already in protective Mom mode when we finished the paperwork so I was allowed to go put up the "I'm adopted!" Sign on his kennel door. All the people were very kind and helpful I would give it a 10 star or more rating if I could. read more

We found a stray dog that was in the worst condition I had ever seen. Very skinny, had an opened wound, a skin condition, etc. and they had an aggressive dog they were gonna take in first but when they saw the condition of the dog they took him straight away! They gave him some treats and checked to see what he had they took very good care of him! If you have a stray you found in bad condition then take them here for sure!! read more

I have a bleeding heart. After finding a kitten in my yard that I thought had been hit by a car because she wouldn't move, I spent hours trying to find a shelter to take her to in order to avoid her being put down. Everyone kept directing me to IACS but I had a narrative in my head that they would put her down so I kept looking elsewhere. I received a call from the Humane Society recommending I take her here, in which the employee assured me they would do all they could to save her. This surprised me and I felt compelled to take her immediately in case she was injured/in pain. She had barely spoken at all and hadn't moved in almost 8 hours, but came to life as soon as we got inside. Meowing and yes - even walking around in the box I had put her in!! The staff was kind and friendly, teaching me about feral cats and being in shock. They assured me I did the right thing and that they have an almost 100% save rate for cats right now. She may even get adopted. The employee had her purring within 30 seconds and I felt at ease. Everyone I saw seemed to genuinely care for the animals and the people bringing in animals, no matter their reason. I hope I never have to come back but I feel much better in the event that I do. These people do the very best that they can with the resources and money that they receive. We adopted our dog from here, and it was a simple experience. Quinn is a beautiful black pit bull mix. She is one of the best things that has happened to our family! The staff is overworked and stressed, but they are so kind. The volunteers and workers helped us the whole time as we looked at different dogs. Their outdoor facilities are nice to get to know your potential new best friend. We love this place! read more

Writing this on behalf of my wife. Have lost our kitty and she went there as one of her many efforts to find him. After an experience there many years ago she was really dreading the visit. Although she didn't find him there she was happily surprised about how professional and caring the staff members were. She also was impressed by the cleanliness and lack of bad smells at the place. This place is very dirty to start with. I walked in with a cat I had found and she was pregnant. The said all that they do for strays is release them I said well I know you fix them ear tip them then release them and she said no we will turn around and let them go we don't have the money to do a TNR program. I waited 2 hours due to one staff make her who wanted to go take a 2 hour break. This place is a waist of time. read more

I adopted a lap/terrier mix there today and could not have been more pleased with the staff. The dogs are in cages, but that is the nature of this kind of organization. The dog had bonded with several members of the staff and they had helpful information that they gladly shared with me. The cages and the dogs were clean. I bathed the dog as soon as I got her home and there was no dirt to be found. Thanks go out to this very worthwhile group! read more

reviews mentioning "I went to adopt a sweet small dog today "Lola". I had been there the previous day and found out she was in surgery. So I asked to see another small dog " Ditzy" Emily helped me and brought me to a meeting room so I could spend some time with her. Emily was ver kind and helpful, but I had my heart set o Lola. So I arrived very early and it was freezing outside so a very nice gentlemen let me come in to stay warm. This is the bad part. They brought Lola to me and said take her out to a pen. There were very large dogs barking and it scared her so I did pull on the leash to get her to a pen so she wasn't so scared. When I left the pen almost all of the big dogs were gone and she walked back inside with no fear. I went to the adoption desk and I was told I could not adopt her because I had dragged her . I asked the girl at the desk what should I have done? She said you could have picked her up. Now mind you she had surgery yesterday and I was not informed of what kind so I didn't want to injure her. Why didn't they take her into the room I was in yesterday so she wouldn't be scared of all the big dogs? Why didn't the attendant who said I dragged her come to me and say let's take her inside? Very heartbreaking experience. Instead of helping these people were rude, curt and broke my heart. read more
