I went to city market for lunch and got food at a middle eastern restaurant and dessert at a cookie stand. The falafel wrap and fries I got from the middle eastern restaurant were amazing. The cookies were great too. City market had plenty of options and lots of seating. Some of the stands were empty, though. And the inside is just very dated in general. A lot of things just need a small update. You can tell you're in a building that's seen better days, that all it is. Not sure about parking. Extremely easy access from the cultural trail bike path and from the IndyGo Redline (transit center stop). It's downtown so walking there is easy if you're close by. This place has seen better days. However it's still got a lot of great options and it's still worth a visit for lunch! read more

This is such a cute market with a ton of different vendors. Acai bowls, breakfast, pizza, coffee, cookies - you name it! I came here around 10 am on a Wednesday and it wasn't too busy. But later in the day around lunchtime there are definitely more people! I love the open seating upstairs - lots of tables. For whatever reason I had never had a chance to come here but now I work very close to City Market, I'll be here at least a couple days a week for lunch. As a person who loves going to the Garage food hall and AMP, it is so easy for me to like this place. I love food courts that have local business instead of chain fast food restaurants. I love how there are plenty of seating upstairs and no matter what mood you are in you'd find something you like here. Ever been to the Reading Terminal Market in Philly? How about Quincy Market in Boston? If you've been to either, you'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect at the Indianapolis City Market. Like we did, you'll find a cornucopia of foods here. There are over 40 booths selling most of the ethnic and specialty foods known to man. How about tamales, popcorn, pizza, ice cream, cheese steaks, soups, candy, deli, BBQ, Middle Eastern goodies, sandwiches, juices, French specialties, pretzels, donuts, cookies, cupcakes, beer, poke, and coffees? Get the picture? Pretty much whatever food craving you have can be satisfied here. We grabbed some iced coffees, and took a seat in the courtyard to enjoy the sights. We saw lots of people swarming out of their offices to grab some lunch, as well as a talented soloist who was performing Grateful Dead and Dylan tunes. Maybe I came at a bad day or time but the Indianapolis City Market was a bust. After researching online, this looked like the perfect spot to spend the afternoon walking around, shopping, eating, and drinking. To my dismay, when I walked in on Saturday around 2 PM (when the website said they close at 4 PM), there were only two places open. It was completely dead and looked like it had been for awhile. I proceeded to walk around the outdoor areas and bocce courts, and everything was equally dead. Don't waste your time; their website is very deceiving. It's impossible to not admire the ways in which Indianapolis City Market has grown under the leadership of Stevi Stoesz. Originally opened 1886 and on the National Register of Historic Places, Indianapolis City Market has long been a downtown Indy spot weaving together commerce with simply being a very cool gathering place. At one point, it seemed like Indianapolis City Market was on the way out. Vendors were hit-and-miss, the facility itself was in more than a little bit of disrepair, and attendance was modest. It seems like over the past 10 years, and especially since 2012's Super Bowl, Indianapolis City Market has roared back with a vengeance and has again become one of the city's cooler places to visit with a nice weaving together of office spaces, commerce, and hosted events capitalizing on the Market's long history and fun features. Advertised as opened 7am-9pm M-F, 8am-9pm on Saturday, and closed Sunday, it's important to note that individual vendor hours vary and they vary greatly. After an event this past Saturday that started at Indianapolis City Market at 8am, I visited the market around 9:30am - 10am and was dismayed by the complete lack of available action. I mean, obvious breakfast options like Rebellion Doughnuts, Just Cookies, and Simply Divine Cupcakes were nowhere to be found - and worse, hours simply aren't posted compllcating any effort to perhaps wait until they arrive. Indianapolis City Market is divided into different sections: The First Floor Merchants area includes 30+ vendors with a variety of pastry options, ethnic food options, a florist or two, coffee shops, vegetarian/vegan options, a barbershop, and much more. It's, to me, the heart n' soul of City Market (though potentially the most frustrating giving the varying vendor hours). By the time I left around 10am on Saturday, well within posted open times, the barbershop was open, Three Carrots had just opened, Flower Boys was active, 3 Days in Paris was open, and I believe maybe 1-2 more. The vast majority were still not open with no signs of activity. There are four Mezzanine Merchants (where some amazing seating is also located) including Tomlinson Tap Room and Mile Square Coffee. The West Wing, also known as The Platform, is exclusively office space with Market administrative offices also here along with a Ball State program, Indy Food Council, Renew Indianapolis, and others. The East Wing includes three bicycle related programs along with a YMCA location. Unless you're living underneath a rock, you also know about The Catacombs, an area underneath City Market that is easily one of Indy's coolest yet difficult to access spots. It's definitely not wheelchair friendly (though I have been in it thanks to Yelp). They offer tours and if you're pretty physically able I recommend it. Parking is hit-and-miss in the area and pretty much exclusively metered. Being across from City Hall and two blocks away from Monument Circle, this area is heavily policed - you don't want to chance playing "beat the meter." You'll lose. There are accessible meters around. There's a ton of renovation going on - causing some disarray with curb cuts, but I was able to access everything needed with some planning. I'm removing a star for multiple reasons - 1) The varying vendor hours is frustrating and, in my eyes, not visitor/tourist friendly, 2) Of the two accessible entrances, one did not work (unacceptable - get it fixed), 3) Signage within the market should include accessibility information - people with mobility issues and elderly need to know the closest accessible entrances. While I'm fairly mobile, it's frustrating to get to a door and have steps to exit, and 4) The exterior is a bit frustrating in wheelchairs and basic external signage should clearly point out public entrances and accessible entrances. This can easily be done without hurting the ambience of the building. Huge pluses - the coolness factor is high, those who lead the organization are fantastic and truly love this city, the Catacombs, and City Market is an absolutely fantastic host for this event I attended - it has been held there multiple years and I'm always impressed with their organization, hospitality, and affordable rates for non-profits to use their building. A few years ago, City Market would have been a 3-Star for me as it simply needed help. It's a solid 4-star now and with a few tweaks could easily be a 5-star experience. I love this place and had I been alone I'd have probably visited multiple merchants on my own that actually were open. Stevi Stoesz is doing amazing things here and building community partnerships - I'm not quite willing to go the 5-star yet, but I see it happening in the future. read more

The City Market is on my list of "must visits" when touring out-of-towners around Indy. Especially if you're in a group of people with smaller budgets, varying appetites, and/or different cravings. There truly is something for everyone here. The options can feel overwhelming at first (especially during the busy lunch rush), but after a lap or two around the joint, you can get your bearings. I also appreciate the Market for its Hogwarts vibes. The red, blue, yellow, and green hanging banners are Great Hall-esque. Non-food vendors include Jack's Barber Shop, The Flower Boys, and a few boutiques. Special paragraph for Tomlinson Tap Room -- this is another option on the mezzanine, opening up in the afternoon. It's a popular spot to grab drinks after work and for good reason. They have 19 rotating taps of Indiana craft beer, an addicting bar chex mix, and you can order off of the Gomez BBQ menu. Tell the bartender you want to enjoy the outdoor plaza and they'll serve you a plastic cup. Monday & Tuesday = $4 drafts. It's worth giving the IndyCM social media pages a follow because they plan lots of cool public events, including workshops, karaoke nights, and an annual fundraising ball. read more

I went here on a Saturday afternoon, expecting some hustle and bustle like you'd find at Pike Place in Seattle or the Milwaukee Public Market -- which are two of my favorite downtown markets in the States. But I was severely disappointed, there was next to nobody here. Most of the shops were closed -- on a SATURDAY? Basically a ghost town. On any given day, something is usually a bustling inside the city market. Crepes, rye bread, taco's, chocolate and beer! This place really hits all bases and is a significant cultural attraction to our city. The walk from the downtown circle to here along Market street is truly a flashback in time. You can almost hear horse hooves on the old brick roads from a time long ago. This market was around in 1860 when our city was much smaller. I've been going to the City Market for nearly 40 years now. In that time, there has been a major shift in focus on making the place vibrant and an asset to downtown. For years after Market Square Arena was demolished, that side of the Mile Square was tied up in development plans that showed promise, but failed. Finally, there is new life in the neighborhood and with it, the City Market has undergone some renovation and transformation to make it a great place for workers and visitors downtown to grab a bite to eat from lots of small businesses that occupy the central food hall. Some have been there a long time. But thankfully, there are some new places too! Lots of ethnic foods, some vegan/vegetarian options, and some tasty snacks/pastry shops as well. The building itself has a rich history that is too lengthy to include here. If you have time on a Saturday morning, schedule a tour of the catacombs underneath (see a separate business review). Outside, there is a plaza which frequently holds concerts and festivals on the west side of the food hall. On the east side is a lending library, bocce ball, corn hole boards, and standing tables for people who want to get outside with their food purchase. Don't ever try to take a nap in India. Otherwise you may be arrested by the India nap police. The City Market is not a sh**ty market, but it's also not Cleveland or Columbus. It is certainly trying to be, and for that I give it credit. It doesn't quite have the spectacular food options that the North Market and West Side Market in those cities have. However if a tradition does not exist then it's time to start one, and that is what this Market is all about. Perhaps twenty years from now it will be every bit as good as the west side or the North. Or the Reading Terminal Market in Philly. I give it a 4-star rating for effort and will keep coming back to try the different stalls here, especially if they stop charging so much LOL. read more

One stop foodiee spot with a variety of options under one roof. Too many peoplee are sleeping on this great spot in the city. I got donuts from Rebel and tacos from the Tamale spot. Next time I I'll try thee bar-b-que and some other options. Didn't go to the Tap Room uppstairs because I'm not a beer person but if you are, I'd recommend it. Indianapolis City Market is one of my favourite places to grab lunch in downtown. It offers a variety of options to choose from and my 2 fav places are twenty two and Mauricious pizzeria. Mauricious pizzeria offers slices of freshly made pizza and breadsticks and they have decent choices to choose from. Service is fast quality is good and and I like the happy staff there. Also like to mention healthy options like smoothies or acai bowls available right across Mauricious pizzeria at twenty two. They are prized right and fill you up. There are plenty of seating options inside the market place and out side. No free parking in this premises the best is the street parking spots. read more

Indianapolis is a historic market that's still a functioning market today. A few things to note: 1) Space: The first floor has permanent vendors selling breakfast and lunch items, flowers, gifts, etc. The second floor has a coffee shop, a taproom, and a few other vendors. The building is HUGE, but there aren't as many vendors as you'd expect and many of them close at odd hours. They do have restrooms in the back on the first floor. 2) Food: Nothing really stands out in terms of food, but the coffee shop on the second floor brews a good latte. If you are in the area, stop by! It's a fun place to hang out for an hour (but not longer since it's smaller than expected in terms of vendors). read more

It made me sad during a recent visit when a place so lively had been hit so hard by the pandemic. Nonetheless, there are additions like Maxine's Chicken and Waffles and a new clothing boutique. This is the type of market that cities drool over having. It's just large enough to have a little something for everyone. Plus it has a long history dating back to 1886. Plus there are seating options. Plus there are also extra community touches that make you feel in the middle of something great. I got to visit on my recent stop to Indy. I feel like the more I visit Indy, the more I want to go back and see more. Indianapolis City Market ranks high on my list of places I want to see more of. Juices. Pretzels. Coffee. Beer. And more. I wish I would have looked up the list and map online before I went, so I could have planned my visit a bit better. And it was neat to see pretty much everyone in my lunch group get something different, which led to lots of oohing and aahing over the lunch table. 3.75* So, according to my check-ins, I'd been here before. I didn't remember coming here but I must have done so back in 2010 when the Indianapolis market was just coming on the Yelp scene and I was sent to the city to help get it up and running. That was a million (or, 9) years ago and a lot has changed. Rather than the farmer's market I doodled about, the City Market seems to have made a pivot to the food hall trend that is spreading across the country. It could be that during my most recent visit (being winter and all) selling fruits and vegetables wasn't top of mind but it was a madhouse of people looking to lunch... and I was fine with that. There are all sorts of fast, ethnic eateries from which to choose so take the time to do a lap and see what's what. Don't forget to mix and match, as you can take one thing from one place and another from another. Also, don't forget to look upstairs. There are vendors up that way as well. The thing with food halls is that in order to best experience them, you need to have a plan -- and time. There's so much to see and so many decisions to make, you don't want FOMO. Knowing that I didn't have much time, I tried to plan in advance but backed up lines and limited seating spoiled my gameplan. My overall experience wasn't a bust but there's room for improvement. 3 stars is too low so I'll round up but on a next visit, it's all about being able to lean in to things. This seems to be a place for the locals based on the reviews we read. We came here because of them. However, maybe due to Covid and business shut downs, the place looked abandoned. All of the places were just for food, and most were closed when we stopped by, 2 pm on a Thursday. On top of that it looks old, a little dirty. I'm a sucker for a great city market and I try to visit one in every new city I visit. It's such a great way to get a quick snapshot of the local biz scene while hanging out in one space. I've been to this particular market on multiple occasions and it never disappoints! I'm always in the area for lunch for a no matter the day of the week, this market is always popping. The food options are large in variety and there's honestly something for everyone! I would say my favorite merchants include Twenty-Two Juice and Three Carrots. I've been a vegetarian for a long time and these two spots give me plenty of options to choose from. If healthy veggies aren't your thing, need not to worry. Options vary from pretzels and cupcakes, cookies, and other sweets to Mexican, pizza, barbecue, gyros, a deli and more. You can even grab a beer or get your hair cut while you're there. If you find yourself visiting Indy or you're new to the neighborhood, don't hesitate to make a trip to the Indianapolis City Market. I like that a place exists in Indianapolis where you can go in and get a meal from any one of several cuisines ... or just grab a cup of coffee, or a crepe, or a tamale, or a donut, or a scoop of ice cream. The Indianapolis City Market reminds me of the Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles, and also the Milwaukee Public Market in Wisconsin. I'd wager that many big cities have indoor markets like this one: someplace old and established to grab a bite and relax in an bustling, busy indoor setting. I've only patronized a handful of vendors, but I like what I've seen and eaten so far. I like that almost all of the food vendors are on the first floor, and you have to walk upstairs to sit at one of the dozens of tables to enjoy your meal. I like sitting on the second floor because you can peer below at all the people and action taking place. It gets very loud and busy and crowded on weekdays, naturally -- many of the people who work at the surrounding buildings downtown use the Indianapolis City Market as a lunch destination, I'm sure. On the weekends, though, especially for early lunch (around 10:30 or 11 a.m.), it's very peaceful, and you can wind your way down the aisles leisurely, looking at the food vendors at your own pace, choosing what you want in a deliberate fashion, then picking one of the clean, empty tables upstairs. The Saturday that I visited, there was an indoor farmers market taking place in the adjacent building, and I saw all sorts of fruits and vegetables for sale, as well as pottery, honey, baked goods and meats. I can't believe I haven't written a review here. This is my go-to place on Saturday mornings. A coffee, a croissant, a stop by U-Relish to chat with Cara and a relaxing morning people watching from one of the second floor seats is a great way to start the weekend. When I was in college, I had to write a paper in a Sociology class about observing people. I chose City Market as my place, and I still like to people watch here to this day. You never know who you will run into or what you will see. It's a great mixing pot of people coming in to visit one of the numerous vendors. There's something here for everyone, and Saturday morning's it's just busy enough to keep things interesting, but not so busy you can't find a place to sit (like it is at lunchtime during the week). I love city markets and try to visit them verses other establishments for food. With that said this weekend was my 3rd visit to Indianapolis City Market. We stopped in on Saturday around noon, my previous trips had been on weekdays and 2-3 years ago. During the week the market is usually busy, so I was disappointed that half of the vendors were closed on Saturday. After walking around I decided on the Tamale Place as the Mexican restaurant was closed. The food was good, but a little pricey. For a pork tamale, beef tamale, rice, beans, & a coke it was almost $20. The highlight of the trip was my stop at Circle City Sweets. I grabbed a piece of the triple chocolate mousse cake for later. The cake was great. I was expecting it to be rich and heavy, but it was light and not rich at all. I'd say if you're visiting your best bet to hit the market is during the week when all of the vendors are open. read more

Great place for a quick bite to eat during the lunch hour. Not all businesses open at the same time, but most everything is ready to serve starting at 10am. Check out Circle City Sweets (to feel gluttonous) and Twenty Two Juice (to feel healthy)! I love the food court set-up, but the offerings are a LOT healthier and fresher than any fast food you'd find in a mall food court! Went for a more "diverse" location for lunch on this trip. The Indianapolis City Market did not disappoint! Started with a chipotle beef tamale from The Tamale Place. Simply amazing!! Second, a slice of Sicilian Pizza from Mauricio's Pizzeria, and it too was superb! Then, to finish it off, I had a crepe from 3 Days In Paris. This was a very cool food hall in downtown Indianapolis within walking distance of the Soldiers and Sailors monument. I'd heard of a number of good restaurants (through yelp!) that happened to be located at this address, so we stumbled in on our first day in Indy. I stuck to Three Carrots, a vegan place I'd researched and was excited to try, but people I was with tried a cookie place and a soup place. There's lots of seating above, with great views of the beautiful old building. Tons of options, something for everyone, and plenty of seating on a weekday at lunchtime. Supposedly there are historic catacombs underneath that you can tour during certain times of year, too! All in all, a very cool place with delicious lunch options. read more

I wish I would have dove deeper into the reviews before visiting because while Yelp and Google say that the City Market is opened until 8 or 9 pm, realistically everything shuts down by 2 or 3 pm. We went for the first time around 5 pm on a Friday to grab some dinner, paid parking and all, only to go inside and find that the bbq place was the only venue opened late. We were a bit disappointed that all shut down in the afternoon, especially since the market itself is open late. We weren't the only ones who got there to discover this either, so I think better advertising of times would solve this. The market is in an old train station, it's very cool to look at and has a ton of options for eating. And there is a coffee shop too. And lots of seating on the upper level. In the evening hours, it seems to be occupied with homeless people loitering rather than customers. read more

City Market is great for lunch when downtown. I really like you can get what you want and so can your friends. I haven't been there in years so I wasn't sure what was really there. I didn't find much online except a directory to help me out so we just walked around to make our decisions. I went with Mambo's Cheesesteak Grill. It wasn't very busy and I got my cheesetake quickly. I met up with my wife who had gotten soup and a pastry and we found seats upstairs. I love the history of the Market and think that this is a great place for lunch. I do wish they were open and had more regular hours. Not being a regular it's hard to figure out what will be there and open when you get there. I wish they had more weekend activities so we could go more often since I am rarely downtown on a weekday. read more

This place is ok. I get so spoiled with Reading Terminal Market back home in Philly I just couldn't help but feel this city market pales in comparison. I know, I know, it's totally unfair to compare, but it is what it is. It's not that City Market is bad by any means and if you've never been to Philly, you'll love this place...It just didn't offer as much as I'm used to. With that being said, it was also nice to actually be able to spread out and peruse without the crowds, so that's a positive. Some tasty treats offered, and you're bound to find something you want to nosh, but no real show stoppers in my opinion. The kiddos ironically had some Philly soft pretzels and some Nutella nana crepes from 3 Days In Paris which apparently serves up the best crepes in all of Indianapolis. They loved both! I was kinda bummed 3 Carrots, a vegan place was sold out of their breakfast bowls by 10am on a weekday. I'll keep that in mind if I ever come back again. The things I really liked about this market were actually located just outside...the book borrowing kiosk and the planters stuffed with fresh herbs for the taking! Loved this!! Genius! There's also bike share right there and some tables outside. These are things I think this place has up on Philly! This space does have much potential and I hope it continues to grow. Parking right out front was simple pay at kiosk. There are quite a few nice homeless folks out front. Maybe buy them a snack, a cold drink on a hot day or a hot cup of coffee on a cold day. We could all benefit from a little more kindness. 3.5 Stars. read more

This place really doesn't have much of nothing to be honest it's got a few restaurants or food trucks that we walked into and they were mostly shut down it's just a strip of donuts cookies and stuff like that but I really don't do I thought I would have some shops and some cool looking things look at and he did not so I won't be back two out of five stars read more
