I'm not sure what I got, but it certainly wasn't Chana Masala that I'm used to. Typically, this dish is cooked in a tomato based sauce but the only sign of a tomato I saw was the slice on top. The rice, while good, also had different spices. My brother-in-law tried it and said he tasted lemongrass, which does not normally go in Indian food. We were very confused by this dish. Chapati is already a local favorite in Indy, so I was pumped when I saw that they were opening this second location in The Garage Food Hall. Their food stand is at the far south end of the food hall and they did an amazing job with the signage. The menu is printed on a massive standing sign, which makes it really easy to read and choose your dream dish. Their team is friendly and every dish they make is amazing. This time around, I ordered a half order of butter chicken, which came with rice. The chicken was super high quality, the sauce was delicious, and they let you choose your spice level. I didn't get bread this time, but they have chapati, naan, and garlic naan to choose from. If haven't tried chapati before, it's an unleavened flatbread that's delicious and a great way to scoop up your food or dip in the sauce. So, so good. I already can't wait to come back for more. The food wasn't what I was expecting, I always think that butter chicken should be very saucy with lots of extra for dipping in naan but this place did not have extra sauce. Delicious - Absolute flavor bomb! Butter chicken was tender and well cooked - bathed in a beautiful, flavorful, deep aromatic sauce. The rice was studded with just the right amount of cardamom and clove and streaks of saffron (red and deep yellow, this was legit, not just a pile of yellow rice.) This was my first time to The Garage, and after making the rounds and seeing everything the space has to offer, I settled on Chapati Beta. I ordered a vegetable samosa and the ginger butter chicken, spicy. The lady who took my order was extremely polite and friendly. After a short wait my food was ready, and it stayed hot while I waited for my friend to order from the Harbor and wait for her food. The samosa was the biggest samosa I've ever had! I'm glad I only ordered one (an order includes on samosa, green chutney and tamarind chutney). I love cilantro so I only used the green chutney, which was delicious. I thought my ginger butter chicken would have a stronger ginger flavour, but it was still delicious. The ratio of chicken to rice was slightly off - there was far more curry than rice, but this is just personal preference. The food came in styrofoam, with plastic utensils, I would love to see more sustainable packaging in the future. Everything was delicious, I will be back! read more

Having this second location of Chapati so close to home is dangerous with a capital 'D'. The only part that's missing is a second stall to represent Shani's Secret Chicken (long term goals? ). I've enjoyed several rounds of the flavor packed yellow daal and mango lassi. I love not only that it's vegetarian but when combined with the spice rice, it packs *so* much flavor into each bite. Topped with some marinated eggplant magic and you are set! Plan to pay more than their original location - I can easily imagine this is due to offsetting costs of high rent at Bottleworks. The beauty of this location is you can enjoy it inside or out (on the Food Hall patio) or pair it with some delicious appetizers or desserts from one of the neighboring vendors (might I suggest some rosewater pistachio brittle ice cream from Lick? ;). I got the ginger butter chicken and garlic naan. It wasn't bad, but it felt bland. I've had much better from their other location. The only ginger in it was a few slices. The half portion is more than enough, and service was pretty quick considering it's in a food hall with lots of people coming and going. I just wish my food had more flavor. If you like South Asian food (Indian/Pakistani), you'll love this place. They don't have *everything* at this location compared to the original, but that's too be expected. The flavors are perfect, always. Some people say they don't like South Asian food...honestly it's probably because they've only had it at restaurants with bland flavors, etc. Each dish is packed with flavor and I particularly love any of the grilled meats. Given their name, you can expect their chapati to be amazing, so get that on the side. At this location you can get a half order of entree with half order of rice or a full order (no rice just entree) - that's the main difference. read more

We've had their food before at a catered event and it was excellent so we wanted to give the newest location a try. Ordered the ginger chicken and it had a lot of ginger in the dish, but not quite enough spice for my liking. Granted, you can choose the level of spiciness and I may have just underestimated what I was looking for that day. I got a full order at lunch, with a side of rice, and a chai. The bill was $27 before tip. I've lived in NY, DC, and San Francisco and have never been as shocked by a bill as I was at Chapati Beta. There was enough food in the full order for both a full lunch and a full dinner. It was a good portion. But, even at two meals, the price was ridiculous. I had the option to get a half order that included rice but didn't realize that full order would as much as it was. The restaurant covered the prices on their menu, which should have been a clue but I'm slow on the uptake. I have no idea what the business model is but it seems inappropriate for a market like Indy. read more

What a fabulous addition to the Garage Food Hall! I had been to their original location on the northwest side, and the food here is just as amazing! They were doing a "soft open" with a more limited menu, but this worked well for me because everything is great and too many choices just make it hard to decide. I had the goat beets and went with the "regular" spice level on recommendation and also added on the chapati as well as an order of basmati rice which I was advised would make this 2 meals worth of food which sounded perfect to me as I love leftovers. The goat beets was so delicious! On wow, and the aroma of the fresh spices when I opened the container...just amazing. The flavor was delicious and the goat was tender and flavorful. If you've never had goat before and are leery...don't be...if you've had lamb and like it, you'll like goat. Seriously, don't miss this dish. The spice level was excellent. There was just a slight bit of heat which didn't overpower the spices and other flavors. The chapati was fresh and went perfectly with the goat beets. The rice was seasoned beautifully which was a delightful surprise. I could eat a bowl of that on its own. I did get a second lunch out of it, and the leftovers reheated beautifully and my kitchen smelled of spices...mmmmm. I stilling have more rice left and will ear that with something else tomorrow. I love the original Chapati over on the west side and am thrilled that this opened so there's one closer to me! This is in the Bottleworks Garage Food hall. The tikka masala was full of flavor and fresh off the stove! I got garlic naan as my side which was so delicious. I have really been hitting this place hard! I've been three times already in two weeks. I am really enjoying the opportunity to explore the Indian and Pakistani entrees. They are still in their soft open, but the menu has four Indian dishes. And four Pakistani dishes. Half the Pakistani items have chicken or goat offered as the protein. The Indian are vegan or vegetarian. I've had both the yellow and black daal from the Indian menu. There is a simple richness from the variety of spices used in the daal which really wakes up my taste buds. The dishes are served with a slice of tomato and a few slices of sweet white onion. The spice level goes from regular to spicy, extra spicy to extremely spicy. The extremely spicy level had both slices of Serrano and green Thai peppers. Nice amount of heat. Perfect for eating on the 92 degree day that I found myself over there. I was also served a mango chutney in a small side cup. I was warned a little goes a long way. It was slightly bitter and a bit oily, but I was excited to taste something I've never had before. There was a bunch of other ingredients in the chutney, but I could only identify turmeric as an added spice by the yellow color. The side item of flavored basmati rice is really, really good. I am so impressed with the perfectly cooked individual grains. Nothing gummy or clumpy here. Flavored by green cardamom pods and some huge green leaf of undetermined name adds mild yet exotic notes. There area a few tiny shreds of carrot and something which gives it a slightly orange hue in the mix. Never knew that beets were a popularly used ingredient for curries. I tried both the Goat Beets and Paneer Beets. I enjoyed both. The goat is served on the bone in chunks. I guess some people might be able to eats this with utensils but I had to use my fingers. read more

New Pakistani/Indian restaurant in Garage food hall. They have been in business on lafayette road for over 5 years now, this being their second location. This is family owned-family recipe, scratch made cuisine. High quality, halal meats used in meat dishes then half of menu that is vegetarian or vegan. The food hall location food seems less spicy at baseline than their other location so if you like spicy order "very spicy" or "south Indian spicy" and they hook it up nicely! My favorite dishes are probably the beet paneer, chicken chili, and paneer Tikka Masala but honestly cannot go wrong with anything. Some chicken dishes are bone in such as chicken Karhai just as heads up. Even though all restaurants in garage are tasty in their own way, this is one of the few that I can say with confidence could eat most days of the week. Highly recommend not just trying once, but trying a few times to taste the variety of nuanced dishes they have to offer. read more
