    mac and cheese entree
    Chris S.

This was one of those pleasant surprise spots that needed to be on the map! We went out for an afternoon drive when our tummies got a little hungry. We searched for the closest restaurant and found this gem. Warm, friendly, and welcoming staff gave us a table right away. The atmosphere, as the business name suggests has an industrial vibe to it with modern touches. It was very clean and fresh-looking too. The menu was expansive with all the usual pub and grill fare. Plenty of beer, wine, and cocktail selections as well. Service was prompt, kitchen pumped out some very hot food reasonably fast. I had the 'chickfila-wrap' and I substituted onion rings. The wrap was great, the chicken was tasty and fresh. The onion rings were perfectly crispy in fresh oil and they gave you a good amount. My girlfriend had the mac and cheese entree and was very satisfied. She gave me a taste and I found it to be very rich and cheesy and the breadcrumbs on it were yummy. The mac and cheese was right out of the broiler I think, as it was 14,000 degrees and melted my tongue (that's a compliment and not a complaint). In summary, find this place if you're coming through Northwest CT as there aren't too many good spots in the region. I'm convinced you'll be satisfied. Parking is a squeeze though. Menu prices are a bit higher than the norm, I'd say. Burger meal prices are pushing close to $20. My wrap was $17.90, the mac and cheese was $16.95. 16oz craft beer $7.95. Ice Tea $2.95.

I'm a little surprised to see a place this modern in Canaan, CT. It's a good thing, and I hope it maintains. They are located next to a community parking lot, and street parking is also available. The immediate interior is the bar, and on the left a dining room with a mixture of booths and tables. Wood is dominant. The menu is fairly standard for a bar (burgers, sandwiches, Mac and cheese, etc), but the food itself is pretty tasty. I will note the spinach and artichoke dip is undersalted, or could at least use dipping chips with salt on them. The appetizer meatballs also have the full NOLA trinity present, and if you have texture issues they are very present. The Farmers Burger was huge, the egg yolk was solid, but the thousand island dressing provided enough liquid to replace the need for ketchup. I also feared the pastrami would overwhelm, but it actually balanced with the beef burger nicely.

McDonalds Chicken Nuggets tossed in sauce called "Boneless Wings"

Honestly will not be returning here, EVER. We used to love this place. We ordered some meatballs while waiting for our friends to arrive. One meatball was cooked perfectly (but tasted super weird), while the other was bright pink/red raw meat inside. We sent it back, and 5 minutes later the owner comes over to explain to us that "that's the way it's supposed to be"... and continued on about how he wouldn't jeopardize his business sending out raw meat. Okay, if that's true then why was the other meatball cooked perfect inside? He said he had it sitting under the heat lamp in the back if we still wanted it. We said no, but we were still charged for them. The whole interaction made us feel like we were assholes for not wanting these meatballs. The whole interaction left a worse taste in our mouth than the meatballs did. The drinks take an unbelievable amount of time to arrive, and we only ordered draft beer not cocktails. Then the "boneless wings" (which we've had before when there) were literally McDonalds Chicken Nuggets tossed in sauce. They never used to be like this. It's the only thing I took a picture of because I was baffled. $14 for seven chicken nuggets. If a restaurant is going to cut corners it shouldn't be this obvious to the customer. I would've rather had Applebees, and paid half the amount. My best friend ordered the French Onion soup, and her bread was burnt under the cheese. Soggy burnt bread. Not good. The service was slow lagging. It was enough for us to just not want to come back ever again. Save your money.

    Avocado cheese dip

After a long ride we were hungry. We started with a few appetizers, Philly steak and cheese egg rolls and artichoke dip. Both were ok. For the main meal we had Bison meatball sub and Tomato and roasted pepper bisque and mad it a lobster grilled cheese. They were all good. It was tasty but nothing I would run back and get. It's rated as a 3.5. That's what I would give it.

Food price/quality (value) rating 8.5. The atmosphere is contemporary neo-industrial pub. The menu is varied with several unusual choices, and the fare is very reasonably priced. We split an Avocado Ranch burger that was cooked correctly and presented with a cool "brand" of the restaurants' logo. Service was attentive and friendly. Four tvs in the bar area allow for good sports watching, and a fairly large dining room for family entertaining is set apart from the har. Would definitely come again!

The $26 lobster roll ("lobstah roll") was imitation crab. Deceitful and tasted horrible.

The atmosphere at dulu is nice if you are a guest or stopping by for a drink. For dinner guests it was underwhelming. Service was nice but didn't seem to match the quality of the prices. He served up multiple mocktails and cocktails with aplomb and even pulled off a ginger and lychee combination that shouldn't have worked but was delish. Almost everything else missed the mark. Staff should know to de-vein shrimp before sending out skewers. They should also know what "black and blue" means if they're serving steak. Another table ordered it and five staff members huddled around a phone at the bar to look it up like they were searching for Pokémon. The orecchiette had perfect texture, but truffle oil made half the plate inedible. The Persian crispy rice, the dish I was most looking forward to, was a complete let down. The rice was well cooked, but the eggplant filling was nearly flavorless and the meager amount of smoked tomato couldn't save it. The roasted mushroom board was good though we improved it ourselves by spreading leftover s'chug from the shrimp skewers onto the bread and layering the mushrooms on top. It also had truffle for some reason. Why? Dulu has the right ingredients to be top tier. This just wasn't their night. The bartender rescued the evening. Give that man a raise.

A Community Venue Changed…read more The Egremont Barn, now operating as Buttonball Barn, was once a cornerstone of local music and community gathering. Because of our long-standing connection to the space, my husband and I chose it for our wedding celebration, placing our deposit with the previous owners, who were professional and supportive throughout the process. After the property changed ownership, we still proceeded with our event in October. This celebration held particular significance, as my father was seriously ill at the time, and we were grateful he was able to attend. Unfortunately, our experience with the new ownership raised serious concerns about professionalism, transparency, and respect for both clients and staff. On the day of the event, the owner attempted to impose additional charges not outlined in our contract. This included a demand for a $500 fee for using a room to get ready--a space she had explicitly told me I could use earlier in the day, noting it was acceptable despite the building being under construction. While I was getting ready, she entered the room while my mother and a family friend were assisting me and removed a rug from beneath them, stating that I "wasn't supposed to use the room all day." I chose not to address this at the time in order to preserve the tone of the day. Throughout the event, the owner was also openly drinking at the open bar, which had been paid for by my father. As the night concluded, she insisted that I personally break down the entire venue either immediately or first thing the following morning--despite knowing I had family visiting--or I would be charged for a cleaning crew. This expectation had not been communicated beforehand and was not included in the contract. When I suggested discussing it the next day, she continued to press the issue and confronted my husband, who attempted to redirect the conversation. To avoid further escalation, my friends and I cleaned the venue that night--while I was still in my wedding dress. She later stated that she would retain space heaters I had purchased in exchange for waiving the disputed room fee. When I noted that none of these charges or arrangements were contractually agreed upon, she responded, "I'm expensive, and I'm not in the contract either, honey," in reference to her being casted on The Real Housewives of New York City. Additionally, her conduct toward long-standing staff members--many of whom had supported the venue for years--was concerning and contributed to an atmosphere that felt transactional rather than community-centered. Some of those staff members have since left the venue. What was most troubling was the timing and context. The attempts to extract additional money occurred at the end of a wedding celebration involving a seriously ill parent, placing unnecessary stress on a family during an already significant moment. The Egremont Barn once represented collaboration, music, and mutual respect. Under its current ownership, that spirit appears to have shifted toward aesthetics and revenue at the expense of community and care. I encourage readers to proceed with caution, ask detailed questions, and ensure all expectations are clearly documented in writing before booking events there.

The bar tender, Noah, was impressive and friendly in that he knew his liquor stock very well, and could explain the flavor intricacies of the various types of bourbon, vodka, and gins. They also offer some non,-alcoholic beverages for the "designated driver" of the group too. We watched Noah make everything from regular and "dirty martinis" with fresh ingredients, as well as one drink where he used a butane lighter and some tiny cedar chips in a straining tool above the drink to give it a fresh, authentic smoky look and flavor. Noah knows his stuff!!!!! The patrons were friendly, diverse, and easy to socialize with if you chose to do so. The establishment is pet friendly for "socialized pets" with a water bowl outside the establishment and some free Milkbone treats inside. Keep in mind that this establishment is a "tasting room" with the majority of products from the New Scotland Distillery, but there are other options. Just don't expect to get a Bud Light Draft or food here. The only downside is that parking in the Lark Steet and State Street location is difficult to obtain without some effort, but we managed to park our vehicles 2 blocks away. This is not a direct criticism of the establishment because the experience is well worth this minor potential inconvenience. We would definitely go back there again, especially for the specialty drinks or the flights and half flights of their bourbon and vodka products. Thank you once again, Noah, for a pleasant and educational evening!!!
