Use Max train if possible * Some vendors up-charge items and only take cash. * Not enough seating areas to watch the performances at the main stage * Crowded - be comfortable being very close to people and possibly rubbing shoulders. So what's the extra star for? For putting up with what we're going to call "The Downtown Hillsboro Clientele." This isn't everyone who shows up for a meal or a drink in Downtown Hillsboro, mind you, but everyone who makes that experience seem like their personal cross to bear. The Downtown Hillsboro Clientele starts the evening by complaining that they had to park half a block away from the restaurant when, just 10 years ago, they could park directly in front of it. The Downtown Hillsboro Clientele is shocked when it has to wait more than two minutes for a table. The Downtown Hillsboro Clientele is regularly baffled by a restaurant's core menu items. It recoils when seeing Spanish words used in tapas dishes. It asks if the sweet mango wings are spicy. It wonders if your well-reviewed izakaya has teriyaki dishes like the place in the strip mall. It asks for six different beer tasters, but never a flight. It complains that you put a sandwich on a bagel, then complains when that sandwich leaves the menu. It spits out garlic on a Margherita pizza. That last bit of tourist classism I just won't abide. It's one thing when some tronfio northerner looks down on a southern pizza eater for indulging in some garlic... it's another when some borioso 'medigan who took one cruise around the boot decides that makes them the Barefoot Contessa of Forest Grove. Unfortunately for your delicate little white-bread-and-ranch palate, not only will that offending garlic frequently make its way onto Pizza Marinara, but pizziolos who've actually eaten pizza in southern Italy at establishments devoid of tablecloths will tell you that garlic finds its way onto Pizza Margherita either in the sauce, in infused olive oil, or--gasp--in garlic powder. And this is really going to knock you on your ass, but East of the Mississippi? East of the Tualatin? Yeah, folks throw garlic on Margherita pies constantly. And you're going to knock points off because the basil's burnt? On a brick oven pizza? I'm attaching a photo of a margherita pizza upon which the basil is so scorched that it's basically chips. The place that pizza came from? Ken's Artisan: The best pizza in this entire state. That may be the last time you see me compare Pizzario to them, but if you're going to knock the place for what the best pizzamakers in the region regularly do... then I'm sorry, but just start ordering from Papa Murphy's. The Downtown Hillsboro Clientele will not be satisfied until there are a maximum of three restaurants downtown, each of those restaurants serves a menu out of a 1950s luncheonette, all of them close promptly at 8 p.m., and they're surrounded by no fewer than eight antique stores, 10 barber shops with owners over 80, and two mortuaries to shuffle those barbers and luncheonette regulars off this mortal coil. Downtown Hillsboro's biggest obstacle to growth isn't foot traffic, parking, or diversity of offerings--its an obstinate core of old cranks that refuses to learn anything modestly new even if staff holds their hand throughout the entire process. I credit Pizzario for doing the slow, patient work of converting the willing one new pizza, cocktail menu, and local band at a time. Downtown Hillsboro is changing adimirably in spite of the toddler palates and temperaments of its most thick-skulled Clientele.

Made a trip to Hillsboro with a couple pals for a day of fun that was capped off with a dinner at…read morethe Cornelius Pass location. One of my friends is an avid McMenamin's follower, finishing stamp books and visiting every one. Thankfully he was with us, because I had no clue from the parking lot where exactly we were supposed to go. There are paved paths into the trees, but no real indication of where the restaurant is supposed to be vs. the various other things (like outdoor event seating, the area for weddings, etc.) they have there. He led us to the sitdown restaurant. The restaurant was not supremely busy - at least on the inside. I believe a lot of people were outside because it was a nice day. My buddy got a beer and a shot and we ordered our food. I went with the BBQ Brisket Sandwich. Normally, I get a burger or sliders, but it was on the seasonal menu and sounded good. I got it with a side of cajun tots. Then we waited. And waited. And waited some more. It took over an hour before we got our food. To be fair, an older couple that was seated outside right before we were seated inside got their food and about 7-8 minutes later we got ours, so they were making and delivering the food in the correct order. The large table next to our booth had 9 people and they got their appetizers early and then got the rest of their food after we did (they ordered after us, too). I will say the food was very good. I've read some reviews about the lack of meat on the BBQ Brisket sandwich - which is a whopping $25 -- but mine had enough. It does come on a large piece of sandwich, so the bread will fill you up. I couldn't eat everything and left a handful of tots on the plate, so I'm not complaining. From what I heard, the burger one of my friends got was very good and the beer and shot was tasty (aged whisky, I believe he said). Overall, it is a beautiful place. Fortunately for me, I had an experienced guide, otherwise I would have been lost upon getting out of my car. Lots of side areas for smoking cigars or tequila bars and I wouldn't have known where I needed to go to eat. The food was very good, but it took FOREVER. The waiter we had was excellent as well - he checked on us a few times and he recognized the food was taking a long time, but there's nothing he can do about that. The food came out around the order it appears they were placed, which is as fair as you can get. I would definitely come back now that I know where I'm going. I don't make it a point to visit McMenamin's locations like he does, but this is a nice location, the staff is great, the food is very good, and if you like other McMenamin's locations, I bet you will like this one as well.

The salad had a good portion of grilled chicken and hard boiled egg, with crumbles of blue cheese. I got ranch dressing which was homemade and fresh and let them toss it in the salad. It was a fine salad but not special. Same with the burger, it was ordinary but fine, although the seasoning on the tater tots was a nice surprise. What shocks me is how popular this chain of restaurants is, yet their prices are very high even for the area. Our friendly server came around pretty often even though we were the only ones in that section of the patio. We didn't order a second round, didn't need boxes and eventually she brought the payment kiosk to our table and closed the tab. I guess if we were looking for an event venue, this might be a great place. But given that the menu is the same at every McMenamins, I don't see a reason to check out any of the other locations. I love that they restore historical places and contribute to the local economy, but gastropubs with big prices are not really my jam.

There is no pressure to stay in your seat for those who are wiggly or for baby wearing parents to walk around. Other concerts and events here are super affordable and amazing for the community. We have also taken music classes here in the upstairs art gallery space and I know they have a cool pottery studio in the basement as well. Support the arts!
